      Yep, the kings lease Staples to the lakers. At any time they can kick the lakers AND clippers out because AIG owns both the kings and staples. that's why Staples was built to begin with, AIG wanted to have all the big LA sports teams (including that stupid NFL team) all in one area of Downtown (this had been planned for AGES and Staples was the just the first piece).

      I thought the Kings would lose games on purpose to be 0+3 and then take that as a challenge. In the early years they have the strength to power to game 7 and win. I always felt this this was a way to burn your team out. That strategy eventually caught up with them. Could have won one more Cup but decided to waste their chances.

      The first loss was the manager being an idiot for starting darvish in game 7. i've been in Japan for most of Darvish's Japanese career and he was a massive choker in big games over here. How the manager thought to play a renowned choker in a game 7 boggles the fucking mind.

      Well history has proven to be very kind to the Dodgers of late. Turns out they never had a fair chance to win the 2017 WS (thanks a lot, YOU CHEATIN' ASSTROS!!!). 2018 WS I give that to Boston. Even if allegations of cheating surrounding that ballclub happen to be confirmed at some point, Dodgers still wouldn't have been able to seal the deal against them as they matched up poorly roster-wise. 2019 could've been the year to do it, but then manager Dave Roberts had to put our president on FULL BLAST to the media and divide the nation even more. Was actually relieved the eventual WS champion Nationals knocked his smug behind out of the NLDS in dramatic fashion, lol.

    This is missing the end of the Mike Richards saga, and the Slava Voynov domestic violence incident. Failing to buy out Richards after 14 was one of Lombardi's biggest mistakes, and is still impacting their cap today. The incident with Slava was out of the Kings control but it impacted their Defensive pipeline and forced some very bad moves in the ensuing seasons. Today's outcome is far worse than expected by most, but is tied to Jeff Carter's injury last season impacting his performance still, injuries to Key prospects in the preseason, and general lack of cap space created by Lombardi's decisions limiting flexibility. Lombardi's biggest sin in his final days was selling assets to hold the line, instead of retooling, Jones for one year of Luccic, picks and prospects for 6 weeks of Sekera who ended up injured. Blake is taking the opposite tack and holding picks and prospects but still hasn't given an indication he's committing to a complete rebuild. As the Kings move forward this season I believe he will begin to sell pieces and commit to a rebuild, there are currently prospects waiting and ready to make the move up with aging veterans in their way that have value and need to be moved out.

    • @Jamess1626
      @Jamess1626 5 лет назад

      Couldnt agree more! Now Richards is getting paid to fish up in Kenora. The Defense has never been the same since the Slava issue (which the league still hasn't made a decision on)... and the Carter injury has crippled the scoring up and down the lineup. Tough times

    • @btgkg9639
      @btgkg9639 5 лет назад

      I had no problem with trading for Lucic but giving them Jones, Colin Miller, who was there top D prospect, and a first round pick was a joke considering the Bruins traded Jones to San Jose for only a first round pick and a decent prospect. Colin Miller has been really good in Vegas.

    Toronto maple leafs after the 1967 expansion, Now that’s a downfall

  • @chimichanga23
    @chimichanga23 5 лет назад +7

    Not resigning Williams was always weird to me. It seemed like they had cap space to sign him for what Washington got him at. Voynov screwed them by being a complete a-hole. Stoll's coke benders didn't help. Willie Mitchell, though older, was never really replaced, and it just seemed like he was a good locker room influence. Trading for Richards, which I was all for at the time, seems like a mistake in retrospect (though I'm higher on Simmonds than most people seem to be, despite his All-Star appearance). Of all the veteran players to re-sign and stay loyal to, Lombardi chose Richards, but it worked out horribly and I think his cap hit still haunts them to this day. Pearson and Toffoli have been huge disappointments since playing lights out in the 2014 playoffs, especially against the Blackhawks. Not sure how Hagelin will work out, but he can't be much worse. than Pearson's been. Kovalchuk never seemed like a good move--not for $6 mil/yr. And Quick is breaking down physically. It sucks seeing prime years of Doughty and Kopi wasted, but here's hoping a high draft pick helps fix what ails them.

    • @cousinpatsey2471
      @cousinpatsey2471 5 лет назад +1

      Pearson has been great for the Penguins, and Quick has been the biggest star on the team for seasons now. Last year he was the only reason they weren't obliterated by Vegas. The team's depth has been awful for years.

    one thing not mentioned was they actually lost their scouts in 9/11 (Bailey, their mascot, gets their name from one of the scouts). they also lost a couple of their other players to other reasons. If i recall Stoll and someone else got arrested for possession or something, and losing Voynov hurt too.

    Those 2009 trades made the team that would go on to win cups. What an insane run of trades that all amounted to huge play makers. The drafts are whatever, aside from using the draft picks to secure decent trades. In so far as if you're not at the very bottom getting the top guys anyway, don't fret about that.
    It's all about how you connect your top guys to the bottom. You build a house. You can't just have a single line of killers trying to carry against a full roster of solid mid pack type dudes. And I fear some of our star player contracts have made that a challenge for management. But it was play makers like Stoll and Williams that really carried the team to a state of consistency. Not necessarily star players.

    And now that they've been rebuilding well they have one of the best prospect pools in the league (I'd argue THE best) and have an amazing future. Byfield, Turcotte, VIlardi, Kaliyev, Fagemo, Bjornfot, Grans, Madden.... I could keep going. They're also one of the few teams in the league with cap space and could add to their current roster while they wait for some more of those prospects to be ready. Plus they have a ton of money coming off the books over the next couple seasons. Kings are in a great position, 2 years later

    You missed the obvious elephants in the room, the fact the core of the team are all over 30. Doughty, Kopitar, Carter, Brown, Quick, Martinez, Phaneuf, Kovalchuk. Its like a retirement home there. And Phaneuf was passed his prime when LA signed him and then they brought in a 35 year old who hasn't played in the big leagues for 5 years. Why? Most teams go for youth, size and speed. Not old guys (30+ is old for a hockey player), probably also why Anaheim and Chicago are struggling. They even brought in Iginla after his prime passed.

    I’m still salty over 2014. That was supposed to be our year, but my Rangers can never play a full 60 minutes of hockey.
    The silver lining for Kings fans is that they got to witness two cups and back-to-back championships by the Lakers. Can’t say the same for the Dodgers, but their window is still open.

    I'm sure you put a lot of work into these videos, but I question the weird arrangement. Like, talking about the 2011 playoffs, then showing Anze Kopitar being interviewed after 2014. You talk about the Kings' play down the stretch in 2012, while showing them shaking hands with the Blues and Coyotes? It just takes me out of it.

    They have not been able to rebuild themselves - it's all built around Kopitar, Brown, Carter, Kovalchuk, Doughty and Phaneuf. All great player but with the exception of Doughty (who will turn 30 next year) they are all +30 years old players. It's not sustainable concept to built your success around aging top line.

    As a lifelong San Jose Sharks Fan, and King Hater lol At least you guys in SoCal have tasted victory from the Chalice! twice. That's more than I've seen despite being one of the most successful regular season franchises, and playoff contenders in not just hockey, but all of sports. Which makes being a Sharks fan that much more painful, especially that reverse sweep you guys pulled on us. That wound will never be healed. Despite the pain, I love my team =) Go Sharks!!! As a die-hard Kings fan, I can say I like your video. While I am not totally savvy as to how everything works behind the scenes, I do feel that it was a mistake to promote Rob Blake. I think he's a capable manager but we need vision and an ability to read the future. I often feel Robitaille has this but is too tenderhearted (to a point) to move too far away from the people he knows. Same with Lombardi. So here we are with players like Carter, Brown, Quick, Kopitar and Doughty and Kovalchuk. None of these guys are old. But the way they've played especially through two grueling Stanley Cup runs (one more grueling than the other) and little wonder they've aged faster. There's no way the body can easily recuperate from the number of hits, saves and acrobatics some of these guys have been through. As the "older" guys wear down, the younger guys have to step up. Lewis, Martinez, Clifford, Kempe, et al. are still producing but need to push themselves to take the lead and COLLECTIVELY to the level of the Stanley Cup team.

    You had a LOT of help from the refs in the Cup clinching game against the Devils, OMFG Ref Rooney was in your pockets. NOW, as someone who scouted Quick in 2007/08 (I saw his first ever PRO game in Trenton, NJ) I know this, QUICK is NOT the problem. I still would say in today's game if I need to win one game I want him in net.

    Cole Adams, you need to make one Titled Downfall of the Pittsburgh Penguins, cause it's happening. I am a huge Penguins fan, but this team is no longer a Stanley Cup Contender. They are average at best. The problem we have is our thick headed GM, still thinks this team is elite, which they are not anymore. That time has passed for the Penguins and it's time to revamp and retool the roster. You need to add the Penguins to this downfall list with Chicago and Los Angeles.
    I can help you get this started the Penguins downfall can actually be traced back to 2010. From bad drafting and unnecessary trades by former GM Ray Shero, to Jim Rutherford's fucked up trade in 2015 for David Perron in which he gave away Pittsburgh's first round pick, which was later used by the Islanders to draft Matt Barzal, to trading away first round picks for rental players and making unnecessary trades that werent necessary. If you need any help let me know, but you can add the Penguins to this list cause it's happening.

    The LA Kings story almost reminds me of the SF Giants this decade: both teams won multiple championships in a few years with a bad to so-so offenses and great defenses (Buster Posey and Lincecum/MadBum for the SF Giants; Jonathan Quick/Dustin Brown for the LA Kings), and then they both fell behind the times as the leagues around them changed in many ways to emphasize offense while being saddled with bad contracts and incompetent managements.

  • @Patman494

    When talking about the downfall of the Kings you have to talk about losing Voynov after 2014. Guy's a piece of shit, but a great hockey player. Losing him really hurt the Kings' blue line.

    Downfall? Let's be honest here, we aren't a powerhouse or anything like that. We had a couple years of good play, and we cashed in twice, it was fantastic. But generally, Kings fans should be used to a little disappointment. In the 2000's, we were miserable, we were happy to even make the playoffs. Only a post-Cup fan would say anything otherwise.
    I still enjoy watching my team, win or lose. And I'm still glad we dropped Voynov like the sack of shit he is, some teams may have tried to pull the "second chance" BS in order to keep a talented player, but we stood by our morals and cut him like the crap that he is.

    It fell apart when Richards and stoll got kicked off the team. They lost their center depth and carter was forced to play center where he isn’t as effective. They also lost a lot of veteran defenseman like Matt green Willy Mitchell and youngster Slava Voynov. Combine that with kopi and brown getting big contracts followed by a slump season, Quick getting injured (Still getting his game conditioning back) and lastly the pressure to repeat past success caused their current funk.... Kings went from a hugely defensive forechecking team to a run and gun transition team. They struggle to score because the forwards now need to play more defensively instead of leaning on an experienced defensive line. I think the trade of Jake muzzin was a mistake. The kings are learning to play a faster game based on their player losses and they are still adjusting. Next year will be a comeback year for them. They are already showing signs of improvement very late in the season but the damage has already been done. With Kopi, carter and brown getting older, next season largely depends on players like Toffolie, Kempe and Iafallo performance. Kovalchuk needs to be paired with Kopi and carter on the first line. Kempe, brown and Iaffalo on second line. Lewis, Clifford and Toffolie on third line. Rookie development on the 4th line. Doughty and Phaneuf paired for first and third line, Martinez and Ladue second and double shift Doughty with any left Dman on 4th line. Stop double shifting Kopi on PK and let Lewis or Clifford take over as the Centers on PK. Clifford and Lewis are the most conditioned players but they get limited ice time. Their endurance and speed is better used on PK. Lastly, Start quick 3 games in a row then Campbell and repeat till all star weekend to get Quickie back into shape for the second half of the season. Depending on their standing, either evenly use quick and Campbell till playoffs or keep starting quickie till a playoff spot is clinched then rest him for playoffs. Just my opinion for a better 2020 season.

    This video should be titled "The Rise and Fall of the LA Kings"
    The rise of them is much more notable than the fall. The fall of the Kings was not surprising, same as the Blackhawks, when the GM is burning the books for years trying to ice a competitive team. Time and time again trading prospects and picks for established veterans will eventually come back to haunt you, which is expected. The rise of the Kings was incredible, the fall was inevitable.

    the kings are actually in a good position going forward. turcotte, vilardi, byfield/stutzle, kaliyev, kupari, fagemo, thomas all great prospects up front to be tutored by players like kopitar and brown. cal petersen being mentored by quick. bjornfot on defense, but they could use some high-end prospects here. doughty is around to guide them along. not sure they make the playoffs in '21, but they should be a fixture there afterwards. scoring will solve itself in time.

    Can’t agree on any idea of a “downfall”. Any true fan should mention that before the beginning of the 17’18 playoffs there was a lot of buzz. I was seriously more excited for that group heading into the playoffs than any other before it. Sure we got swept by Vegas but that was a great team and the management did what any would do. Grabbed another goal scorer and gave it one more shot. As soon as Blake knew it wasn’t working, he lateraled to where we are now. Less than 2 years later, LA’s future is the brightest. So I really don’t see where the downfall is. In fact, in my obviously biased opinion, I think LA was the team of the decade. 2 cups and starting this new decade LA is already ready to make another run within a year or 2. Stutzle...

    Winning 2 Cups despite of mortgaging future picks in a process when re tooling its roster on the fly for about 6 years is a good thing! In retrospect i still would do it. The team's undying loyalty to its old core group with its albatross contracts is one of many of its painful demise. This is what differs a Bill Belichick to any other Head Coaches on any pro sports. In the end, as a team architect you have the responsibility for the whole and not the sum of its parts.

    When we won the cups we did Brownie, Kopi, Carter and Quick were at there peeks. Luckily we won when we did or else we would still be blank for Stanley Cup wins. They simply blew there wads thats it and have nothing left. Quick has been figured out by beating him top shelf, we absolutely have no scoring that has come up dryer then a desert. It seems as if the game has grown past our guys. The league is alot younger and faster and we dont have a coach or GM that can come up with the rt chemistry to bounce us back. Its a mess. Its hard to watch. Hopefully we can figure this thing out whatever it is so we can enjoy and have pride once more...

    That's just how it is in the salary cap era, your superstars need to paid and as they age their production goes down as well. The Kings have one of the most expensive roster in the league and one of the oldest as well. The thing is, their downfall is accelerated because of the hard-nosed grinding style they play, had they traded their superstars for picks and prospects instead of signing them to overinflated deals they MIGHT still be competitive right now. But the reality is it's hard to foresee things like that when you're winning.
