On April 20th 1992, Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon, the surviving members of Queen, took to the stage at Wembley Stadium for the start of one of the biggest events in rock history, which the band had organised to pay tribute to their former colleague -- the incomparable Freddie Mercury. Queen were joined by some of the greatest musical talent in the world to celebrate Freddie's life and work and to increase public awareness of AIDS, the disease that had prematurely ended his life the previous year. As well as being great entertainment, the concert raised a huge and still growing sum of money for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity formed at the time whose charter is the relief of suffering from AIDS throughout the world. Now for the first time both halves of the concert are being made available on Digital video.
Special guests include David Bowie, Gary Cherone, Roger Daltrey, Def Leppard, Joe Elliot, Extreme, Bob Geldof, Guns 'n' Roses, James Hetfield, Ian Hunter, Tony Iommi, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Metallica, George Michael, Liza Minnelli, Robert Plant, Mick Ronson, Axl Rose, Seal, Slash, Lisa Stansfield, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Young & Zucchero.

So weird seeing James sing without a guitar.
it would be as weird seeing Roger Taylor play piano
I watched it at my father's house, didn't recognize him thought it was Lemmy
It ain't the 1st time. He's done it a couple of times before, and months after that concert. Bot involving his arm tied to a sling.
It's like Thor without his Mjolnir or Stormbreaker
I mean, I agree.. but with May & Iommi- why bother?
Queen + James hetfield + Tony lommi =METAL OVERLOAD
@@charlienorton2337 yeah i know. Actualy their music have crossed genres and some of their songs have heavy metal elements in it. and maybe influenced some of the metal bands that we know today. and please dont tell me whose metal or not cause iknow exactly what im talking about coz i got a shitloads of metal bands in my playlist so stfu. ok.
@@raymondt.5163Well, I like what Queen did in the 80s, that the band has experienced other rock subgenres such as pop-rock, new wave, soft rock, But they never abandoned their roots, songs like dragon attack, hammer to fall, i want it all, gimme the prize, princess of the universe, are hard rock and heavy metal songs,
Queen and Black Sabbath both were huge influence to James n Metallica. Metallica always stated in recording of the black album that Queens influence was a big part of that album. And Black Sabbath n Tony , well we know that story history of that band in the metal world
@@braian.7015 Don't forget Hitman. That is definitely their heaviest song.

That was the perfect Queen song for him to perform.
The Concert for LIfe matched Queen songs perfectly. Robert Plant- Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Hetfield/Iommi here... Say what you want, but George Michael doing "Somebody to Love"? That was epic and i can't say I was a GM fan.
Yes, it has a american south vibe which goes along fine with hetfield
Ogre battle
@Herrie Keetman I thought it was a Metallica song for years before I found out it was Queen. I had it as the b-side on my cassette single of Enter Sandman.
@@brbob4934phenomenal tribute to Freddie. Can't remember one as good since.
The best part was Tony Iommi's big smile when he shook Hetfield's hand. Real musicians are supportive of other musicians.
They're father & son, in guitar.
That's how I see them, lol
Tony is a real gentleman
Hetfield took his down-picking style from Iommi. There is a lot of respect there from two completely different generations of the genre.
@@LeandroOlavarria Yeah, he is.
I've shook hands with Iommi, he was doing a biography, a signature and a handshake at my local bookstore for £20, so I thought I would go along as I had nothing better to do, best £20 I ever spent! It was his bad hand but it all ended in one piece.
I know there's not even a possible comparison with freddie, but hetfield's voice here is really really good

It's quite crazy to think Metallica had less than a decade on the clock at that point. 10 years is nothing; imagine going from sweaty metal clubs to guesting with rock royalty at a fucking stadium in such a short time. Must have been weird.

Imagine telling baby James when he was just starting Metallica that he'd be personally invited to sing on stage with Queen and Tony Iommi
I love how James Hetfield has an aggressive/violent voice but still sounds beautiful. One of the greatest metal singers ever lml
Agreed! I love his vocals on the songs Hero of the Day and Bleeding Me from Load
James didn’t try to imitate Freddie. He imposed his own interpretation. The true test of any song and artist. It also highlights the mucisionship of Brian, John and Roger as they clearly adapted to the Metallica style. Transposition
Bro! You know for a fact James was beyond honored to be on stage with those guys. He absolutely killed it 👏
I can’t begin to imagine what James felt on that day performing with Tony iommi. tony’s guitar work in early Black Sabbath was literally James’s gospel. He tried to play it cool but that night James was most likely ecstatic to play with Tony
James vocals at 1:41 just really gives me goosebumps holy shit
Killer
I wish he would still do this signature screaming thing live it’s awesome
my favorite part of the song, its such a signature thing of younger James yes, I really miss it too. He still does some Yeah's but very low ones as he can only get his best raspyess in his lower vocals nowadays.

Oh bore off. We get it, you drank the kool aid.
This song gave Lars Ulrich a lot of trouble… 😅
Back in the day when James's voice had more distortion than guitar's.😅
When you got Iommi playing rhythm guitar and Hetfield up front playing tribute to your band, you KNOW your band is God tier. RIP Freddie. Long live Queen!
Hetfield looks so out of his element without a guitar in his hands.
There is no way to communicate how difficult this song is to play. Killer tempo. Great version.
Just ask Lars Ulrich… 😅
Not only is this one of his best performances ever, but it's amazing that James got to sing on stage with some of his childhood idols.
The camera wasn’t focused on Tony Iommi enough. Smh
Exactly.
To be fair, he did play on a few songs that night, and at least on this song he didn't play any solos, so it makes sense he wouldn't get too much camera time. Great guitarist though.
I was at the concert.
It was kind of a Queen / pop audience since there were lots of big pop stars attending.
Iommi came out introduced by May - and you could see that he was there since he was one of Brian’s heroes. They played a couple of bars of ‘Heaven and Hell’ but there wasn’t much of an audience reaction... just not a Sabbath audience.
This night was not about him
@@MrFusion I guess he was asked personally by BM to join as an "enforcer", since they were/are good friends. And he played his part great, IMHO. I would have loved too see also RJ Dio sing some Mercury's song...
Must've been crazy for Hetfield to play with his heroes.

The power between Tony and Brian is amazing. You can feel that in your soul.
Dat Hetfiled, his voice was on the edge at this time. HUGE !
What a performance ! Vocals were the stand out for me, James totally nailed it. That second chorus where he screams crazy shows just how much power his voice had.
He made sure he nailed it, didn't want to let heroes of his like Tony and Brian down.
James hetfield is so unapologetically himself, he could’ve sang this song with less raspiness like the original but he decided to stick with what he is used to and prefers. I like that about him, he would never change himself for anyone, no matter what
Imagine james, tony, and brian all have a guitar in their hands. The stadium would implode
Omg, I had no idea that Queen ever released a metal song. Just goes to show the diverse range of music which Queen explored which eventually led them to be loved by so many people of different music tastes
Their first three albums shows them as a... Hard rock band✌️😎
Im literally on this video because another video said this early song of Queen’s lead to the creation of speed metal, so I had to hear it, and saw Metallica covered it as the B track of Enter Sandman, and Hetfield sung it at the Mercury tribute concert.
1:36 is the happiest I’ve seen John Deacon look during this whole show in all of the videos I’ve watched.
Great version!
Everyone talks about James but nobody names Tony Iommi. Brian May is Tony’s fan, and Metallica’s music is a great inspiration in the music of Black Sabbath.

If you can manage to make James headbang to your song then you have accomplished something great
Imagine being James and playing alongside the band who inspired you to play music... that's awesome man
And the guitarist who inspired him, Toni Iommi of Black Sabbath
James always wakes up a beast when he's singing without playing guitar. He has an amazing voice. Saw Metallica with GnR summer of 92 after he got burned in that pyro accident. He sung and I can't remember who played guitar for him, but that is the best I've ever heard him sing live and you could tell he was having a good time with it.
Wasn't it one of his roadies? I can't remember either...
@@samvisser9408 Yes. A guitar tech. John Marshall I think.
John Marshall was the guitarist in Metal Church too, back in the day. They had some decent tunes.
@@MehYam2112 Yes. That's him. They did have a few good songs. I can't remember the name of the song, but they did a video that got a lot of play on Headbangers Ball. They were in a desert and set up like they were playing the song live. Great song. Now my old ass has to find it. Lol!
Back in the mid 80's, James broke his arm mid tour in a skateboard accident (!), and they got John Marshall from Metal Church to fill in for him... So when he stepped into those pyros in the early 90's and again needed someone to fill in for him, it just made sense to ask the same guy who had done it before and knew the drill. 😊
James with Roger and Brian singing harmony on this just sounds RIGHT.
Well it was honour for James, to sing with his legends. Especially with Iommi, May
Love the way James salutes Brian and Tony at the end, like saying: gentlemen, thanks
It's soo f*n weird to see master Hetfield without guitar. But the singing - 100% pure bliss..
You can dislike Metallica or be critical with their career. But here you can see how they were recognized as Rock Stars by the greatest legends.
Some metalheads are critical of Metallica simply because they've wandered very close to the mainstream scene & had maybe a few pop-sounding songs.
I for one, do not share that opinion, I am not even a big fan of them. To me, they were definitely the poster boy of metal late 80s/early 90s. And they were great. James still had the voice.
The voice of Hetfield in this song is AMAZING!!! Great perfomance 10/10
epic night in wembley stadium april 20th 1992!!!!
one of the alltime greatest rockshow ever organized, RIP freddie mercury
Black Sabbath, Queen and Metallica. I think my head would have exploded. Thankfully, I’ve had the privilege of seeing Brian and Roger.
El sueño cumplido de Hetfield tocar junto a Queen y Tony Iommi
Well, nobody could sing like Freddy but they could sing his songs in their own manner. This version ROCKS!
Roger Taylor is criminally under-rated
this song blows my mind... I never liked Queen... but after this I understand how POWERFUL this band is! Pioners
How can anyone hate the catharsis of James Hetfield’s singing? So badass.
I love that James did the last verse with the f'ns. The rest of the song he actually did closer to Freddies version.
He also says ''fully loaded tommy gun''. Metallicas Cover of the song has the same lyrics as he sung live here, I think they just wanted to make it a little more violent lol
He's regaining it though. His recent concerts sound much better than they have for the past 10 years, and pretty damn good for a 50 year old dude.
Hetfield rocks this song! Good choice!
Roger was smashing the double rhythm with the rim and bass trick, I ain't never seen that before and it was the fucking bollox👍
Brian seems to be having the most fun
James Hetfield the only one in the world who could, after Freddie, sing such a Queen Speed metal like this❤
Am I the only one who just realised that the sirens loose is made in Brian's GUITAR?! I thought they sang it, but no, it's a distortion! Marvelous!
Stone Cold Crazy is my favorite Metallica cover because I can listen to both back to back and love them both equally.
Man I can't help myself, Hetfield fits perfectly!!
I really enjoy James at this form… He is being like multiple personas throughout all these years!!
You can see Brian look over at James after they all sing "Stone Cold Crazy, you know!" and smile. Almost like something magical happened on stage when they're all singing together.
James' best live voice I've ever heard. Damn he was on fire those days
I regard Queen as one of the greatest bands of our time - the energy here is on another level entirely. Fantastic.
That drumming is tight, SUPER TIGHT.
Queen is forever.
The two greatest heavy metal bands EVER of all time and both happen to be my two main faves I was two years of age watching this on TV never will forget how much of a impact both Metallica (Godfathers of Thrash metal) and Queen+Black Sabbath (Godfathers Of Heavy Metal) would become a life long bsession of religous dedication to the greatest music in existence!!!!!
Imagine a tour of both bands before Freddie passed away that would have been incredible!!!! The WrestleMania of concerts!!!
James is headbanging not because of the song but because he doesnt have a guitar 😁
Or he just really likes the music?

Considerada la primera canción de Trash Metal de la historia... no cabe duda que Queen fue una banda adelantada a su tiempo...
Man, Hetlfield's voice is so amazing ! so much resonance ! My favourite male metal voice, with Howard jones
what was so great about this show was how well the guests complimented their songs, toni's style fit well with the two songs he played on, roger daltry singing i want it all was a perfect choice for his voice and stone cold crazy naturally had a very hard rock/punk sound so james was the perfect choice as well, furthermore, tie your mother down has a blues riff so slash fit right in as the guest guitarist and joe elliot did great as well, a really fantastic show!
