The Brian May Band - Since You've Been Gone (Live At The Brixton Academy)

- It’s a live track from a concert by the Brian May Band, recorded at the Brixton Academy, London, on 15th June 1993. At the moment when we’re putting this up on this new channel, this video brings back powerful memories. Touring as a front man, following Freddie’s passing, I was in complete denial of Queen, and regarded my new band as my future. I was blessed with the massive support of the late great Cozy Powell on drums. Here we see Cozy in fabulous form. Of course, when Ritchie Blackmore’s band, Rainbow, recorded the monumental version of this song that charted in 1979, Cozy had been the drummer, and for me, covering this track live was a kind of homage to Cozy. The vocal is almost impossibly rangey, and I made it a personal crusade to work on my voice, extending my range so I could sing it. The band was a dream outfit for me … with already legendary heavy rock stalwart Neil Murray on bass, who had worked with Cozy (and my friend Tony Iommi) in one of the incarnations of Black Sabbath, long-time Queen collaborator Spike Edney on keys, newly recruited Jamie Moses on guitar, who remains a great friend to this day, and two stunning backing vocalists, Catherine Porter and Shelley Preston. It actually gives me a chill up the spine to see this outfit in full flight, as clear and bright as if ‘twere yesterday. Bri

Each of these areas will have their own playlist on the Brian May channel. But the intended pivot of it all is the entirely new part that we’re calling Brian Talks. holy shit, I knew Brian May could sing, but I didn't know he could sing like that...
He's voice is frickin' Strong!!!
And he has a PhD in astrophysics.
Brian and Roger both had (HAVE) amazing vocals in addition to their other more obvious talents!
@@j3dwin The singing rocket scientist!
@@j3dwin that's how he makes his voice reach the stars ;)
Brian May is indeed one of the most talented musicians of all time; good singer, great song writer, greatest guitarist ever - enough said
He is indeed. Brian even managed to make his own first guitar.
However, I still miss Freddy immensely...
***** Absolutely !!!!
Ed Manuk. ian
He have phd in astrophysics....
He's does well, even when he didn't write the tunes.
Anyone in 2024?
Sure🤘
You betcha!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Never heard, or seen, this version before. As a long time Blackmore fan, I am much impressed. Curiosity got the better of me. I searched out the Head East cover. God, it is awful. Don't, just don't!
Oh yeah!
I'm going to see the Classic Rock Show next month..I hope they sing this..they do it AWESOME!!!!❤
Wow I never realized Brian May had such a great voice.
Until I came across this video, I didn't either. And I was listening to Queen back in the '70s, so I _thought_ I knew a lot about him.
You almost want to ask why he never sang lead on any Queen tracks…and then you remember.
Yeah, he's only been singing lead and backing vocals for 50 plus years
Brian is an amazing singer. Just not as legendary as Freddie. But there’s some songs I prefer Brian’s voice on, like Too Much Love Will Kill You.
Other great 2nd singers are Keith Richards and Pete Townsend.
Come on Brian, get a rock band like this together again.
He did. It's called Queen!
Queen still rocks. Albeit the bad attitude of Adam, his notes are fuckin' spot on. Let's all get over the death of Freddie. He was amazing, but there are other singers, and Adam (again, ignoring his bad attitude) is one of them.
Ummm, what's his bad attitude?
AlexKx I think he's not nice.
I just don't like his attitute. He's playing with queen but he thinks he's better than they are, and he's even better than Freddy. Which isn't the case.
Love how Brian May does total credit to the guitar AND singing. Very impressed.
He's BRIAN MAY of course he'd be giving credit where credits due
Rainbow is the master piece.
@@kennethmoh9042 I realized that several bands covered this and it's hard to remember which was the best. Watching the rainbow cover, yeah, I remember this was well done.
Well he is the best Guitarist ever
The definition of what a rock star can be. What a beautiful performance.
Catherine Porter and Shelley Preston are amazing! FANTASTIC voices! Consistently awesome!!
and hot as hell
Well rounded performers.
Beautiful set of nipples on the left
Thank you , was wondering who they are

The legendary Cozy Powell on drums.......the guvnor.
Wondered why Brian May was covering this one, and then I spotted the drummer. :-)
@@QuarrellaDeVil Cozy hated the song.
Think Keith Moon might have something to say about that m8. All good just a matter of opinion after all!
@ harryurz ... Cozy was indeed superb !
@Andrew Clarke hahahahahahaha
For fricks sake, I am over 50 and I didn't ever realize that Brian May could sing. Damn. And really good backup singers as well. Lesson learned.
I'm 58. where has this been my whole life? thank you thank you thank you.
Right! I thought I've seen them all, not this one.👏
I was there! Wow. It was a great concert. RIP Cozy Powell, he was a hell of a drummer.
I’m so jealous! Need a time machine! I can only imagine how brilliant it was’, love Brian
reallyyyy....omg please tell us more about ur magic experience on that concert
Yup. Saw him w Rainbow. At the Rainbow. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. School next day...was very tricky.
I was there too!
Closest thing to Bonham without trying to be Bonham
It appears that it was rather chilly that night.
I can see your point...
And hers.

Hahaha!
Jesus Brian would be the lead singer of any band but Queen had Freddie
Freddie *
Queen had Freddy and Roger, who was also a world-class singer. (He's the guy who hit all those super high notes in those complex harmonies.) So Brian is only the third best singer in the band, and still better than many other lead singers.
@@MartijnVos Freddie*
Freddy who, don't you mean Freddie.
Fixed it for all you grammar Nazis 😆
Congratulations to SIR Brian May! The honour is well deserved!
Dr Sir Brian May = rock god, academic, talent, etc. etc......
J1mmy Savile was knighted too... not such an honour... I'd have more respect if he'd turned it down...🤨
@@TomTwain I am sure that having your respect is really more important to him than receiving the honour of being knighted. 🙄
@@murrayedgar4791 Sir Brian May, Phd. 😉 Non Ph.d.s like Jill Biden try to get away with the "Dr." but her Ed.d. is largely a status title earned by pompous educational administrators.
Came for the song...stayed for the back up singers... 🙂. Awesome all around!
👍
the bird out of bucks fizz :D
I was at that concert, the singers were sooooo hot! Really did a fantastic job on Queen songs, as female voices. Not to menion Cozy Powell on drums!
On level with the original. Great job Brian.
Beerdy - Bruce Lee Central this a tribute like than the original version musicians like brian may and neal Schon canny do this performances keep the essence of the song👏🏻
When you say "original", I think you mean the Rainbow cover version.
Here's the original version, performed by the song's writer, Russ Ballard.
ruclips.net/video/_v0bDfZytwk/видео.html
It sank without trace until Ritchie Blackmore revived it.
@@RoyCousins Yeah, several bands have done nicely out of Russ Ballard's song writing skills. God Gave Rock n Roll To You was a masterpeice, but I get sick of the number of times I hear it's a Kiss song!!!!
nah
@@RoyCousins Crap! I hadn't seen that version until you put up the link! Well, the Rainbow version is just great. But, when I heard the Brian May Band version my hair stood on end all over the place!
I knew about Brian's guitar playing, but what a voice!
Excellent guitarist, astrophysicist, PhD, and a knight...and an all around nice person....long live brian may....may you and your family be blessed😁
Brian May. One of the greatest guitarists and human beings ever. He makes me proud to be English.
pls
And an astrophysicist to boot! Dr. Brian May.
Totally agree!
Same mate! The guy is a legend?
Only compared to Jesus Chris
From a singers perspective: Brian’s voice is absolutely smashing. On par with the best voices of rock. No really. I’m absolutely stunned
If he was in a band with anyone other than Freddy Mercury he could have been lead singer. Freddy is one of the best singers and frontmen ever
Imagine if Brian was lead singer and Rythem Guitarist in the first iteration of Led Zeppelin. Yah, wot!??
🎉
Let's not go crazy now
Low key he’s a way better lead guitarist than Jimmy. He can play with far more styles and actually can play his own solos live 😂
Better tones too imo
Maybe tied as far as rythm
Whatever !
Brian May is a GOD!!!
Totally agree
Nope he is a prince Freddie is a King and God, and even still a LEGEND
Brisus =)))))
Jesus is a God
Freddie is A King of All
Brian May is a LEGEND
Get it?
No compare Brian with God, he's interesant and important but he not Brian May
Cozy's a beast, one of the best drummers ever. And who knew Brian had such a great voice.
eh, every Queen fan knew! 👑✊🇬🇧
I knew Brian had a great voice, but he was always over-shadowed by Freddie.
He's got a great voice.
Am 66 years old and thought Queen was one of the best bands ever. Freddie Mercury could have sung anything. Brian May is instantly recognizable. Roger and Brian took a step back to let Freddie shine and shine he did.
I'm a huge Deep Purple/Rainbow (as well as Queen) fan. I must say I am thoroughly impressed with this performance! Bravo to Brian May and his amazing talent.
Don't forget this wasn't actually a Rainbow song orginally...... The great Russ Ballard, ex Argent, who also wrote God Gave Rock n Roll To You, that so many people think was written by Kiss....
@@startingfingerstyle Its Rainbow man! No one can beats Blackmore in the face of the earth!
@@chandler1285 Yeah, Rainbow did it, but it's a Russ Ballard song. He recorded it first!
@@startingfingerstyle Russ ballard plays with rainbow
@@uncle4996 Pretty sure he doesn't. The Roulettes, Unit 4 plus 2, Argent, then a solo career! He just wrote tons of great songs that other people covered! CHeck the timeline at the end of the wikipedia article on him en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ_Ballard
This song fits his voice so well. Also those backup singers are fire in the chorus.
God bless Shelley Preston and Catherine Porter!
Must of been chilly that night..
@@SuperBroncosguy I was thinking the same...those beauties are a 10 on the Mohs scale lol
The music was great, but the tittys were better.
Peanut smugglers
Two Legends !! Brian & Cozy Powell
And breasts
It's ridiculous how awesome both Brian and Roger Taylor are at lead vocals!
In any other rock band they would have been lead vocalists. Queen just had Freddie...
There will never be another Freddie, completely unique, he lit up the stage and held the audience in the palm of his hand❣🌹RIP Freddie
2:42- TOTAL Rock God. Totally unique guitar sound, Brian May take a fucking bow you legend
He's an astro-physicist, also! 🤯
Wow I didn't know Brian was such an all together well rounded vocalist good job man!
This is a guy that is a phenomenal musician, who made it to the top in the world of rock and roll, WHO ALSO has a PhD in astrophysics, who worked on the project that sent a spacecraft to Pluto....that's a career...
Best backup singers ever!
When you got Murray and Powell at the rhythm section, there's just about nothing that can go wrong on stage.
Agreed! Just a shame they couldn't have played together longer somewhere. Neil got a raw deal outta Whitesnake and Cozy was forever on the move! Halcyon days.
@@paulcolville5972 Yep. Shame how Murray was treated for his work on several Whitesnake albums. As I heard, all that's left for him out of "1987" now is the certainty that it's his bass guitar playing that people hear on the original recording.
Both were also great in Black Sabbath. They played "Tyr" together, and Neil replaced Geezer in '94 for the Cross purposes tour.
Fun fact Powell played on the rainbow recording of this song, Which this version seems to based on
@@Mewhen12369 yes the original is not so guitar based despite the fact that Russ Balard who wrote the song is a great guitar player
Wow I knew Brian was a very competent singer but this is incredible! Queen really were a very talented band right across the board, Roger and Brain were better than most bands singers yet they were "just" backing vocalists. Again just kind of puts how great Freddie was into perspective.
Only Brian May could pull this off. One of the greatest musicians in the history of music
and still a lot of people sneer at him, especially hendrix and zepplin fans, they dont rate him for some reason? they think they are the rock gods 👑✊🇬🇧
Play a richie blackmore song?
Ian moss could play it and sing it atleast as well
Could sing in any other band other than Queen. Always knew he could sing. Great cover.
Brian May, Cozy Powell & Neil Murray? WOW!
Right!!!! Brian and John need a band like this to do a queen band....far better than Adam Lambert...who isn't bad btw
What an amazing ensemble.
Now THIS.... was a supergroup! Also - Spike Edney and two synchronous chicks!
and is also Former Rainbow band members, Rainbow also covered this which is the best together with this version.
Roger Taylor and Brian May were both excellent singers in their own right. Both could have been lead singers but realized that combining their skills with Freddie made for true dynamite
Considering the shows Queen has played since Fred was dead, (Tribute w/Daltrey and Plant et al and tours with Paul Rodgers and solo Brian May band here) it is VERY apparent that Fred was a VERY overrated front man/singer all along and it was 100% BECAUSE he was a flagrantly flamboyant gay that was played to the hilt for publicity. Similar to D. Bowie and E. John.
@@jaysantos536 holy shit how idiotic of a comment is this
@@jaysantos536 hot take, yeah Brian and Roger didn't need Freddy to rock, but I'd say Freddy was the secret sauce that made Queen into something incredible.
I mean that's like saying John Deacon was holding Queen back cuz he couldn't really sing well and wasn't super animated. The assessment is accurate but the conclusion is wack.
@@gustavlundqvist5796 100% true. All three were overrated.
LOL. Take tour pills man!
This was 30 years ago, I Love Brian May,
Wow, never seen this before. Great song and Brian May doing vocals!!!
It's a shame Brian didn't sing more lead vocals with Queen. Don't get me wrong, I adore Freddie's voice and would love to see Brian put together another solo act and tour. Heck I'd be happy if he and Roger would come back to the US for another tour.
Big Rainbow fan but Brian May can do no wrong!!! Neil Murray, Cozy Powell wow!
credit to RUSS BALLARD
he wrote this song..and a whole shitload of other top songs..
Google him..
Impressed with that voice.
Well that fookin' ROCKED, now dinnit? Bloody brilliant!
Yow! Brian sure had enough talent to be a front man. It says a lot for his musical passion and modesty that he was willing to let Queen have another lead.
Brian is so underrated its a crime' Not only can he jam his ass off' His voice in right on key...
Brian May is a verified genius. Such a nice person also. Here you can notice, he is all for the song, not for himself.
Queen did have one of the best backup vocals ever. This is one of the reasons. I had no idea. He sounds amazing.
LOVE this song! and May sings the heck out of it.
Yes - still being watched in 2020 - cracking version of a cracking song.
Wow! Brian May bringin the HEAT on lead vocals!
May delivering the goods, backup singers bringing the HEAT
what the hell !!!!!!!!!!!! ??????????????????? may may may... absolutely nailed it.. could not have called this
more to say... listened to his song ten thousand times.. played and performed it hundreds of times.... this blew me away.. may was born to sing that exact song... i knew he could sing but damn son
I still cannot even believe this man exists. Loved the original and do not like remakes...but anything Brian does is perfection❤
The Russ Ballard original? x
@@michaelmogan5563 Yeah, the irony is she probably doesn't know Rainbow covered it...so she actually does like "remakes", she just doesn't know it.
Man, only Brian could take an amazing song like that and make it even better.
Better? Good cover but Rainbow’s original still the one
@@garypayne3845
The original is by Russ ballard, they were covering Rainbow's version though
So much PASSION on this song. Thank you Brian. Godspeed Cozy Powell
Brian channeling his inner Rainbow! Bonnet would be proud of his vocal! \m/
This really suits Brian’s voice, he can really open up and give it some dirt. Man, he sounds good here!
Brian May's voice here is much better than I realised. Suits him better than Too Much Love..., I think. Great. Not to mention his stellar guitar-playing. RiP, Cozy Powell.
Yes but I think his voice in 'Too Much Love' communicates the tragedies taking place in his life at the time and suits the song well. Just my opinion. 🥰BMB🎼
This is as good as it gets. Brian rips on guitar and vocals, all of which is a given. But, damn I miss Cozy Powell. He was a beast on the drums.
wow Brian impressed me so much here, what a talented guy
This is the band Brian wanted Queen to be. He's always been a rocker at heart.
Queen were very much the band Brian wanted to be in as they were
. Undoubtedly Brian and Roger the most in to rock
Neil Murray on bass and Cozy Powell on drums. Two of the best. From Black Sabbath late 80s-early 90s lineup. Yep, they're all related.
and they were also in whitesnake during the early 80s and if david coverdale kept them around along with john sykes, they would've ruled the world.
I believe they were also bandmates in Whitesnake in the early 80’s
They said they all use to live down the street
Cozy played with the honeydrippers.
Cozy Powell, Rainbow.
Wow! .. I never knew Brian could sing and doing a hell of a job of it on this cover!
He was always the Queen rocker. Saw this tour in Birmingham. Great band and my favourite backing singers. Driven by you ...good song.
I’m totally speechless at how great Brian’s voice is.......simply “wow”
Dear Dr. May, please get this out on DVD soon, sir:- PLEASE
Eagerly waiting knighthood - every fan :)

Brian May is one of my favourite guitarists. His solos on Queen songs were always original and the guy is so modest.
Now, this was a surprise. Long time Queen fan here. Attended Drammenshallen, Norway in 1982, and Råsunda fotbollstadion in Stockhom in 1986. Never knew Brian May could sing like this. Cool!!! And what a great performance overall :)
