Something is op if it doesn't have a sufficient amount of counter play or the counter play available is significantly harder than the thing it counters.
Something people in league of legends have very little understanding of. So many people are like A isn't OP because B on this one champion completely counters it. Not realizing that A completely shits on absolutely every other top laner. And that the jungler does not have any impact on the over or under powered scale of a laner. As it is an outside factor. Arguing with people about Pantheon gives me a migraine.
and also the fact that not every single champion is avaible makes it hard.Like do i have to spent my points to buy a champion that i dont like to counter a OP champion?
As a Pantheon main, I'll tell you that "manaless" champions that can spam their abilities non-stop all the way to level 6 and above without backing, gives me a migraine.
Well as Pantheon the only manaless champion you have anything to fear from is Kennen. Maybe if you're having an off day Vladimir could annoy you. But for the most part you shit on Shen Riven Yasuo Zed Tryndamere Rumble Rengar Mordekaiser Kled and Kayn.
To be completely honest hearing league players saying shit has "no counter play" gives me. A migraine. Because it is said about EVERYTHING in the game. Doesn't help that they all pretend that what they're complaining about doesn't have flaws.
I can't tell which is which but I'd say Mario Down Special is the actual cheap one because with one button and directional input, it invalidates most recoveries in the game and leads to an instant death
@@shybandit521 He's referring to them respectively - Fox's down special is cheap (in melee) because it flat-out has almost no startup, a lot of active frames, and very few recovery frames, making it very spammable in just about any context. My favorite OP move is Pan's straight punch in Dragon Ball Final Bout. Its recovery time was faster than the hit stun duration, so you could keep punching until your opponent got K.O.ed. Basically, if you landed the punch when your opponent is not flying or jumping, you've won the match.

I remember using the Game Genie back on the SNES version of SFII to make the boss characters playable. Playing as Vega(US), his crouching LK had the frames and sounds of just about any other LK attack in the game, but on hit had the damage and sounds of a HK. I literally was able to do a perfect run through the entire game using just about nothing but that move. It was broken af
My first fighting game was soul calibur 2 GameCube version SC has an accessible design but depth to it that I enjoyed, my father and I would bond over it because we both could play and beat each other Then I started using Nightmare, I dont remember the specific attack name but the input was ↗️↗️B, which made Nightmare/siegefried spin at a diagonal angle while coming down with his 5 ft great sword for mass damage. Its easy to interrupt with a horizontal attack because of the start up frames, but id use it to punish vertical attacks because the move let me Dodge and attack simultaneously while catching his head during his recovery frames. I got gud at the other attacks but dad banned me from nightmare because thats the move id beat him with the most. He deemed the move overpowered That move is still in SC5 and I can still catch people with it on competetive modes, and it brings a smile to my face barely winning with it after not using it for the whole match
My favorite OP move in the Hardest MKDA arcade mode was Quan Chi's throw. I swear it's broken compared to the other throws. I couldn't play worth a damn otherwise, but when I spammed the move fast and hard enough, I would win (nearly) all the fights like that. Of course this didn't work on Moloch but his attacks are pretty slow and predictable once you get used to him, even on hard difficulty, because his move pool is limited.
My favorite broken move in any fighting game: Literally everything that every single character has in the arcade version of Hokuto no Ken by Arc System Works. A game so much more busted than any MvC game, so much more busted than Melee, we're talking so fucking broken...that every single character can *reliably* pull off combos that take off 100% of the opponent's health bar, and there's even 1 character who can do that without having any Aura, Boost, or Stars drained from the opponent's Star Gauge at the start of the combo. If I had to narrow it down to just 1 move from Hokuto no Ken, though, it would be Raoh's Sai move. Raoh takes out his Sai and stabs through both his own foot and the opponent's foot, trapping the two of them together so that Raoh can keep the punishment going. This is the one move that allows him to form kill combos without any Aura or Boost, and it can be comboed into from both on the ground and in the air.
But it's more than just the Instant KO moves. (Known as Fatal KO's in the game.) See, in Hokuto no Ken, there are a ton of physics glitches that allow for such things as: -Dribble Combos -Hyakuretsu Combos -Basuke States (When your opponent is in this state, the round is pretty much yours.) -A crap-ton of other things that I can't think of off the top of my head. Just watch some high level play of HnK. After just a few matches, you'll start to question whether it's a fighting game, or a freaking basketball game.
Oh yeah that sht that would ignore knock backs ... Lmfao imagine that on a KoF / SF game internet would go insane, legit 1 special move and just spam normals till the guy dies. That's basically it : 6:40
I actually find the idea of frame data pretty interesting (it's pretty neat to know how the nature of a fighting style affects play in games like this), and you laid the concepts down really well in a manner which was interesting and easy to understand. Great job on this video!
6:48 I would rely like to see a video on broken fighting games, some of the most fun I have with some of my friends is with the old marvel games and KI as well as both the ps1 and wii star wars fighting games (especially the wii one).
Nah king crimson's ability wouldn't let him move things further than they are. The ball would've moved just as much as if he hadn't used the ability, but nobody could react to where it is now.
My favorite move is Pikachu’s back air in smash Ultimate. It auto cancels, so it has very low recovery frames, so you can combo it into itself, and it’s a really good tool for edge guarding.
This is a great video, it really helped improve my fundamental understanding of fighting games and as someone who is just getting into the genre I really appreciate that.
Alexander M it doesn't matter, it has so much shieldstun and shield knockback that you have to perfect shield to punish it, and even then you need god like reflexes.
Kushala Eh, with a bit of practice and a good hitbox you can punish it OOS on reaction pretty consistently even when it isn't perfect shielded. It takes 19 frames for Ryu to rise and then about 30 frames for him to land + lag.
I fking love the baseball canceling animation, and... another "overpowered" thing beside the quick, high damaging attacks of Zankuro from Samurai Showdown 3 / 4 is the broken AI from MKII, "but thats a theme for another video"
@@jp3813 If anything, that might make the joke funnier. I want to think of it like the 'bomb under the table' from Alfred Hitchcock, but for comedy. If you have no idea the the joke is coming, the shock and surprise of it is what makes it funny. But in the case your told it's coming then anticipation builds because your mind is engaged and imagining. For me at least, the idea of hitting a bomb down right center field and running a second after swinging is ridiculous. But seeing it happen kicks in the irony because that is not what happens at all in real life, but the contrast of it is what makes it funny. But hey, that's just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.
My favorite thing about Core A videos is how the title and thumbnail are made in a way that casual players would be interested in or understand, then a hat trick is performed showing an advanced concept explains it
Pre-patched Injustice. Superman's super move that started up in one freaking frame. That shit was ridiculous. Even though they patched it to 5 frames, that's still as fast as most character's jab! The only upside is that it's punishable on block but even then, you have to find a correct distance to punish properly with a full combo.
Basically an attack that can easily be performed at most times and has certain aspects that are unfairly overturned so that it can be repeatedly used giving the opponent little to no chances of decently defending. There I just answered the main question so that average people can stomach the answer.
Mine is probably meta knight tornado. The move it self has tons of active frames and covers meta knight completely from above and somewhat from the side. The interesting thing is that he should be zoned out by projectiles but because the move has such high priority and how the hit and hurt boxes match up, it allows meta knight to run through most projectiles in the game without getting hit or hurt himself
your videos should be longer, I'm addicted to them I feel like I waited to long for this one and I was kind of hoping you used a jigglypuff(melee) example on OP movements lol keep up the amazing job :)
jigglypuff has no broken moves though bair has a great hit box and can wall SOME characters out but it doesn't do too well against a good projectile shine is more op basically
Krizalid kick , not the Tornado thing... Krizalid One move Can hit: Low throw High OVERHEAD COMMAND THROW IF POINT BLANK COUNTERS INTO THROW IF HIT Oh, and it knockdowns if it hits you! Quan Chi! I WANT THAT LEG GONE!!!! It probably has ALL POSSIBLE PROPERTIES EXCEPT INVINCIBLE!
Thanks for giving a shout out to how single player action games have different frame data philosophies from fighting games! I was looking for this vid! Trying to make my own action adventure game
I agree. Personally, I never felt guilty about spamming that type of move against the CPU in arcades because I was POOR. I did whatever it took to make my 25 or 50 cents last longer. Though I never did that against a human opponent. I didn’t want a bad reputation in the arcades.
Hey I just wanted to say your videos are all fantastic. From the jazz music to the editing, all aspects of them are just spectacular. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for all of your insight, not just on fighting games, but gaming as a whole.
magitician Agreed on the 1st. A feint ain't exactly like a cancel. The closest anime thing i know to a cancel is a Stand from Jojo's that erases causality. Feints are closer in concept to White Len's or Makoto's movement clones.
+Azmodeus87 how about Miyata's jolt counter on Arnie Gregory? Seems similar to hadouken cancelled into Shinku hadouken. first hadouken was parried, blocked, neutralised etc
I gotta say, the quality of these videos is ridiculously good and it's weird seeing this level of quality in a short video about fighting games. It's like someone made a gourmet ham sandwich that costs $100 a plate.
This is a really well made and thought out video. Can you make a video about why some final bosses are cheap? I just want to get your perspective on the matter.
Pretty much this. I've played games where I'll be doing mix ups with 10 frame moves and the CPU will block it every time because it just knows. You only hit those types of CPUs when they decide to mess up. Not because you actually 'figured them out.'
The old arcade tradition of 'we want yo money'. Not to mention disatisfaction if they're not strong. We expect them to be. Seth from SFIV was laughable.
because it made money. the more you lose at arcades machine the more money you'll ended up spending to kill the boss. in some cases the cpu just cheated like in early capcom games and SNK bosses
I'd have to say my favorite is Ganondorf Upsmash. In Brawl it came out fast, had a huge hitbox, big range, and did a massive amount of damage. It was punishable, but it was safer than it should be and the hitbox and active frames were MASSIVE. The same still applies in Ultimate, but it's a little more well rounded now.

I got gud at the other attacks but dad banned me from nightmare because thats the move id beat him with the most. He deemed the move overpowered
That move is still in SC5 and I can still catch people with it on competetive modes, and it brings a smile to my face barely winning with it after not using it for the whole match
Ah i know that move, its power surely comes from its easy input and unpredictability, but there are other moves way more powerful...
yeah but Link's throw
My favorite OP move in the Hardest MKDA arcade mode was Quan Chi's throw. I swear it's broken compared to the other throws. I couldn't play worth a damn otherwise, but when I spammed the move fast and hard enough, I would win (nearly) all the fights like that. Of course this didn't work on Moloch but his attacks are pretty slow and predictable once you get used to him, even on hard difficulty, because his move pool is limited.
Xavier Cxdfc SC IV is better because cassandra
yoshimitsus stone fists were broken as fuck
old video but i loved the baseball editing you did lol.
"It might look like this"
*flash*
"batter: im out suckas."
My favorite broken move in any fighting game:
Literally everything that every single character has in the arcade version of Hokuto no Ken by Arc System Works.
You could just have said that it has instant KO moves that can be used reliably. A beautiful mess
But it's more than just the Instant KO moves. (Known as Fatal KO's in the game.)
See, in Hokuto no Ken, there are a ton of physics glitches that allow for such things as:
-Dribble Combos
-Hyakuretsu Combos
-Basuke States (When your opponent is in this state, the round is pretty much yours.)
-A crap-ton of other things that I can't think of off the top of my head.
Just watch some high level play of HnK. After just a few matches, you'll start to question whether it's a fighting game, or a freaking basketball game.
FATAL KO
This would have helped a lot of people get more involved in the ESPN evo thing. Great vid.
Yeah, most people don't know how good a strong normal can be.
you are now the fighting game tut guy.
"Broken Games can be fun"
And you didn't use a picture of Hokuto no Ken
Yeah a friend reminded me right after I uploaded lol.
4:46 So it will be basically King Crimson from Jojo?
It just works.
Nah king crimson's ability wouldn't let him move things further than they are. The ball would've moved just as much as if he hadn't used the ability, but nobody could react to where it is now.
Kingu Kurimson No Ryouku
@@actualfrick YOU WILL NEVER FIND THE TRUTH
For someone who is not inner workings fighting game savy, that explained things really well for me. Thank you.
My favorite move is Pikachu’s back air in smash Ultimate. It auto cancels, so it has very low recovery frames, so you can combo it into itself, and it’s a really good tool for edge guarding.
Fox's Shine
That's it
Yes.
pro tip: just play fox and stop crying lol
Just pick samus
Jiggs rest and metaknight as a whole
I'm pretty sure this video is talking about fighting games
The FADC baseball analogy was spot on perfect. Core-A Gaming is a damn treasure.
Kinda sad he didn't mention melee fox's shine.
TopOfAllWorlds Or 64 Kirby's jank Up-Tilt
Or Marth's grab range
because melee isn't a fighting game kappa

lolm2k
This is a great video, it really helped improve my fundamental understanding of fighting games and as someone who is just getting into the genre I really appreciate that.
Ivan Ooze's Invulnerable Strike: Long Active Frames, Invincible (no hurt box), safe, and per game mechanics can be done during block OR hitstun.
Tournament Fighters Karai.
Ryus true shoryuken in sm4sh. Seriously, a block string that combos into a kill at 40% with just 4 frames of startup? Yes please
That's funny that they matched the SFV frame data to Sm4sh Ryu.
And has invincibility frames and a huge hitbox and active time making is surprisingly unsafe to punish.
To be fair he is helpless (aside from fastfalling or DI) until he hits the ground, but yeah.
Why is 4:46 so damn funny?
The sound makes it perfect :)
Haha, cause it was so unexpected
@@szczoteczka2233 But he already said what's gonna happen.
@@jahimalnar7978 In other words, not unexpected.
Of course you put Geese Howard on the thumbnail.

It seems redundant to say it at this point, but the quality of these videos are just absurd. Great job!
May seem redundant to you, but still very meaningful to me :)
:)
I was thinking the same thing. This is my first view and I'm fairly blown away. Excellent editing and writing. Absolutely terrific.
I know nothing about fighting games, but you manage to make these vidoes both informative and fun to watch. Amazing work dude!
My favorite thing about Core A videos is how the title and thumbnail are made in a way that casual players would be interested in or understand, then a hat trick is performed showing an advanced concept explains it
I just noticed he used Iori's theme,"Arashi No Saxophone 2" in this video
For anyone wondering who want to check it out,it's Arashi No Saxophone cover from Consoul.
Yeah and with his trait active this super does ridiculous damage.
Add lag and his lasers and you're practically screwed. Especially when your mains are Bane and Lex Luthor.
Look, Superman's the GOAT. The developers were only trying to make the game as accurate as possible.
Sagat's Heavy Punch in Capcom vs SNK 2
Sagat's Cr.Fierce: a normal so strong it can single-handedly win wars.
In SSB4, I found my “friend” ‘s weakness and used Corrine counter on predictable moves. He now rage quits whenever I pick him/her.
your videos should be longer, I'm addicted to them I feel like I waited to long for this one and I was kind of hoping you used a jigglypuff(melee) example on OP movements lol keep up the amazing job :)
jigglypuff has no broken moves though bair has a great hit box and can wall SOME characters out but it doesn't do too well against a good projectile shine is more op basically
Glad you liked it! If the channel gets big, I'd love to do 12-15 minute videos that go deeper.
Core-A Gaming I like your longer vids too
Son the baseball hit cancel had me dying xD
Your editing is top notch! Love all the little clips and sprites moving around
A.Rod would be toptier if he had a FADC on his homers.
I laughed so hard because of the frame data joke and the baseball FADC. Priceless.
omg not gonna lie. that made baseball look awesome!

I really like your visual presentation on top of the narration, it is funny and relevant at the same time with a mix from several media.
Just noticed the little arashi saxophone bit in the background music. Great choice, great video breakdown
...you're telling me there are people who exist who don't find frame data interesting? What the hell?
I know, the world we live in.
Hurt/Hitboxes should be in EVERY fighting game training mode.
Mr.Dolphin! Mr.Dolphin! Mr.Dolphin! Mr.Dolphin! Mr.Dolphin! Mr.Dolphin!
Being a developer and inadvertently discovering all this by myself was very interesting.
Thanks for giving a shout out to how single player action games have different frame data philosophies from fighting games! I was looking for this vid! Trying to make my own action adventure game
nice to use real life examples. Iceman's ice beam was probably most overpowered to me due to its chip damage
I agree. Personally, I never felt guilty about spamming that type of move against the CPU in arcades because I was POOR. I did whatever it took to make my 25 or 50 cents last longer. Though I never did that against a human opponent. I didn’t want a bad reputation in the arcades.
Wait, you never answered the question in the title. You just explained how frame data and hitboxes work.
*Uses clip from glory* Instant Sub
Hey I just wanted to say your videos are all fantastic. From the jazz music to the editing, all aspects of them are just spectacular. Keep up the great work and thank you so much for all of your insight, not just on fighting games, but gaming as a whole.
My favorite OP move is in Pokkén Tournament with Chandeler, is you press forward Y in 3D or forward X in 2D, you will do a quick Kamehameha
3:33 "a mix of kendo and fencing"
Basically Kenjutsu (AKA kendo but actually useful)
As someone who has taken kendo, i find kendo fairly usefull.
Would be a bit blind to not see where you're coming from though
Imagine ace of diamond with cancels 🤔
dear god that would be crazy
Imagine Hajime no Ippo with cancels. Every fight would be both ludicrous and insane. Except Miyata, he would still be a snore.
+Azmodeus87
Sendo would be unbelievable
Also Ippo canceled into Gazelle Punch from a jab against Sendo
magitician Agreed on the 1st.
6:47 STILL WAITING FOR THE "WHY BROKEN FIGHTING GAMES ARE FUN" VIDEO.
=)
WE STILL ARE
Paul Phoenix nuclear punch from Tekken was always my favorite
I gotta say, the quality of these videos is ridiculously good and it's weird seeing this level of quality in a short video about fighting games.
It's like someone made a gourmet ham sandwich that costs $100 a plate.
This is a really well made and thought out video.
Can you make a video about why some final bosses are cheap?
I just want to get your perspective on the matter.
I think a lot has to do with the cpu ai doing inhuman calculations. Toolassisted probably knows a lot about this.
4:45 lmaoooo omg I never thought I'd see a baseball bat swing cancel irl loool nooo
I can't say I ever thought I would ever see an FADC during a baseball game.... I liked it.
This was amazing and as a smash / ufc fan, felt tailored just for me. Thank you.
Anti air jab in SFV is my fav....... I hate that shit
It's a gift and a curse
Dat Boi Of the many things I can't stand in SFV that is near the top of my list xD
Love it. Ryu can anti air your cross ups with Jab reset. The definition of cheap.
The Treacherous Disciplin Makes me wanna throw my stick out my window or go play Killer Instinct instead xD
+KenStarSol I feel the same... Even for non cross up anti air jabs :D
