That's exactly how I end up maining characters. I started playing Reimu on Hisoutensoku because she's my favorite character, and she became my main because she's the character I know best in that game.
Ye'ves Godvoice Or, in my case(KOF), 3 or 4. Funny thing is, in that game series, I can play well with ANY CHARACTER sooooo......Roulette select. Because I actually like the Ryūko no Ken characters, in SF I main Dan. The proper shotokan guys are cool and all, but...yeah.

I feel weird that I mained a character out of sentimental value, King was my big sister's second favorite character behind Yoshimitsu. When we played together she'd have me play King. My big sis gave me her ps1, Tekken 1-3 to have for free when I was about 8. I've been maining King since I was 4 years old, won 4 tournaments, & came in 4th for my only State tourny I've been in. I'm 21 now, still playing as King.
Damn, and I thought I was weird too cuz I used to main king because my big brother who got me hooked to tekken mained him, and his secondary was paul, which was my secondary. Now king's my secondary and Sergei as my main
Imo the only thing that matters is what character you find most pleasing, aestheticly or otherwise. The time required to learn a single character is so great that if youre not excited about your choice, youll most likely never have the motivation to put in the hours.
It's important but the playstyle is just as important imo. Simply because what if you find a grappling character to look cool and you can't do the grapples and none of the moves feel natural even after a week of training? That sort of shit gives you that main crisis.
I main Sakura because I saw myself in her. I wanted to get better at fighting games because I admired players like Daigo and my more experienced friends at the time. She was cute, so I chose her, but I quickly found out how well she fit me. We both also admire Ryu, and for me, it goes back to admiring how much my older brothers would beat me up with him in Street Fighter II on SNES. I was awestruck and wanted these people to recognize me. So I went to practice and practice in hopes of one day coming back and showing them my true worth. And when it happened, becoming the best in my friend group didn't stop me. I'm always chasing Ryu.
Haha, love this. Very cool! :) I picked Sheik in Smash: Melee cause that was like the first badass looking fighting lady I'd seen, and being a huge Zelda fan. Now I play Smash: Ultimate and Ganon cause his huge sword is so fun to hit people with...
mk is very good, but you can’t exactly just pick him up and wreck shop just like that. he just has an extremely high skill ceiling and great options. you just need to know how to get as close to that ceiling as possible and how to effectively use those options. ice climbers are bullshit though as long as you know how to use handoffs. it takes an okay amount of practice but i managed to learn handoffs and how to set them up in the span of a day. you got grabbed? sorry, your stock is mine.

When I was a kid, I saw a Melee demo at Toys R Us and decided to play Samus because I thought he (originally believed Samus was male) looked cool and futuristic. Over time I got really good as her and it even helped shape my playstyle as a zoner in other fighting games, like Dhalsim and Scorpion. She's been my main in Smash for 20 years all because I thought she was a cool looking sci fi warrior.
+Fuck Ghost Banning Empty subs are worthless to a content creator. Assuming that the CC wants to have better RUclips suggestion ratings, empty subs wouldn't be providing views, likes, or watch time. While one could do those things by using the accounts themselves, it would be incredibly inefficient. It's like trying to dig a hole with a house-sized shovel; it might make a big hole, but you wouldn't be able to lift it. You're much better off getting a group of people using normal shovels to do it for you.
I love Akuma, not only because I thought the way he fights looked cool but I actually dug a little deeper into the lore(convoluted as it may be) and grew a liking to him. He's actually not "Evil" per se, his goal is the same as Ryu's except the thirst for power and self improvement consumed him. He's basically obsessed beyond help lol but at the same time I found that kind of cool. Most villains use dirty trickery or scientific enhancements for power(Bison), but Akuma worked his ass off and was willing to sacrifice everything to become the best version of himself he can possible be, and still keep going further. Crazy as that is, I admire and respect that drive and motivation, I wish I was able to pour my whole self into something I was passionate about but I just don't have it in me lol.
In the Tekken games I tend to main King quite a bunch. I was really into wrestling back in the day, especially Rey Mysterio. The fact that King was a luchador who fought for children practically sold it for me, and I haven't looked back since :)
I maimed Miguel in Tekken. His Spanish heritage, unorthodox fighting style, violent tendencies, and his later amazing rage art (mained him before that), made him one of my all time tekken favorites, and I don't think Bandai Namco will get rid of him any time soon.
The first fighting game that I played seriously is fighterz, and I instantly main base vegeta, simply because of his "command grab" that is a reincenetion of the time he killed Nappa. And I simply love that scene because its defines the character a lot more than his death in namek
I go for mid tier. Low tier: people want to show off/prove they have skill. Top tier: Others will claim you are cheating for using broken characters. Mid tier: are in the middle and no one blinks an eye. (+)
I just ignore Teir lists, and focus on the character. For example, I've mained Link for all the smash games, no matter what his Teir placement... Although it usually has been the top of low teir, except in Brawl. He looks very promising in Ultimate though. Oops, did I rant on too long? Sorry.
Don't you dare think people who pick low tier mean they want to show off, only lowtiergod who isn't even good at anything. I play Lars in tekken and my friend plays Gigas and we both think the characters are so epic. I also occasionally like to play dragunov every now and then because he's hella fun and also looks tough and cool without saying a single word.
Yeah i was going to write this moist pancakes. I've been playing SF since i got it all the way back on the SNES and though i am nowhere near a "pro" level player i find these videos really insightful, good work Core-A Gaming!

I often take the character that looks the most balanced at the beginning. No fatty that will make me feel like the game is slow, no skeleton that will die in two punches. From there, I see how it goes and adapt.
Hisako from killer instinct is the perfect character for me. She has a lot of personality, every detail has a bit of story telling, and her playstyle is perfect. She has a lot of tools to use in a match, and she can be pretty unpredictable with the amount of ways she can attack.
I haven't tried everyone out or fought much but I instantly gravitate to Shadow Jago because he just feels like Akuma and I always like Ryu and Ken but I'm becoming more of an Akuma in my older age.
I remember playing every character in smash 4 when it first came out and trying them out against a computer. I was losing most of the time with Zero Suit Samus, but for some reason she just felt right. 6 years later and she's still my main in smash ultimate even with the change in playstyle. I just like her style and feel, plus I love the metroid series.
Shawn michaels suffered a win when he had to end Ric Flair's career in a wrestling match with his signature sweet chin music. He idolized him and told him that he was sorry and he loved him before the kick.

well, it technically did, but the only way that's going to happen is that you got Melee in the US as a kid, but then your mom or dad was promoted and transferred to Europe for work, but you lost your copy of Melee on the way, so to make it up to you, your parents buy you a new copy of Melee in Europe, and little did you know, the game was slightly different.....but who ever did that lmao

I main Guile due to my background as a military vet, plus I like his style. I've also used Ryu as more a sentimental character as his values in life are things I strive to be. Stoic, yet not afraid of my feelings. Ready to meet any challenge life throws at me with honor. If you really think about it Guile and Ryu are really the same kind of person, just draped in the values of the culture they hail from. My two favorites... Also, Zangief is cool, but I hate Capcom for taking away his Green Hand. That being said I like him too. I love his patriotism and love for his people and the dedication he has to developing his body. God, these characters have really influenced me as grew up playing Street Fighter. I also identify with and play Cammy sometimes. I have PTSD and all the baggage that comes with it. I hate that I've discovered I've been used the way she has and Army girls kick ass!
On a similar, yet somehow, opposite reason, I main MegaMan in smash because my eyes just locked on to him on the character select screen, I've played 1-8, I love them, and the combination of weapons is just perfect for me. I main Cloud because of KH: Recoded, but in Brawl, it's Lucas, (and Ness, but Lucas is just better.) and Meta Knight, because of how the controls work, and they're just the easiest to work around the controls with.
In SSBB Project M mod I chose squirtle with the ninja alt, because, as my sister said, "If you could play as ninja squirtle, why would you want to play as anyone else?"
Using low tier God to show people who focus on using weak characters is way off. Man uses mid-high tier characters and still rage quits ranked matches.
When it comes to my character choice, I always prefer playing as a speedster type that typically hits weak but, fast. I love speed alot and I can't stand being a slow heavy hitter. I also like playing someone that just generally looks cool and interesting/familiar with such as in a crossover. One of my favorite characters to play in UMvC3 is Phoenix Wright, I love Ace Attorney and wanted to put the time in learn how to play him
I main Akuma. Purely because of how cool I thought the raging demon was as a kid. I know, I know, 3edgy5me. In BlazBlu, I main bang, I love the aggressive glass cannon rushdown types. I'm not great defensively, never have been, so these characters really suit me. Same for Amy SC4, and Marth/Sheik SSBM.
Adon became my favorite character in SFA3 near the end of my time with that game in large part _because_ of his sounds! I also loved his muai thai stance and his specials 😁
I've always kinda picked like this, I first chose a group of characters I like the design of, while I lock out characters I hate by design, then I start going thru the characters I like and pick the one that fits my style best. Usually do to this I never end up with the character I like the best, but I end up with one I still like, but can also probably play the best. In my language there is also an expression that basically means "fits your hand" to express things that come natural to you more than others.
While the order I try out characters depends on how much I like the character, of a character is very slow or is charge attack focused I probably don’t use them, no matter how much I like their personality. I tend to favour the characters that are very fast and can do multiple combos easily, like Noel from BlazBlue, or Yosuke from Persona 4 Arena
Falcon owns! I also play dark Pit. He's just really cool, and I love his victory pose when he stands cocky with his arms crossed, and then his quotes "Can't help but feel sorry for you"!
My favorite character in all of gaming is King K. Rool, so when he got announced in Smash, you have no idea how excited I was. I hadn't played the previous two Smash games at all, and now I waited up until midnight on release day for this new one just because it has a character I like in it, so I'm more willing to deal with his weaknesses just because I like him so much as a character.
@Darrell Williams I think it was either a smart sidenote that tiers do not matter because theoratically anyone can beat everyone or it was just an ironic joke. I am pretty sure Gerald knows his FGC facts just judging from the quality his videos.
He's not referring to LTG himself, but to the fact that LTG actually named himself after the notion he was explaining; some people pick "weaker" characters to display their competence as a gamer, that they can beat you even with a weaker character. We all know LTG is shit, I doubt core-a doesn't.

He showed me how the game worked by playing his long time main, Akuma. I thought he looked cool, I thought my uncle was cool so naturally started picking Akuma and never stopped. Chun Li: I started picking Chun Li when I figured out what attraction was and kept her because thicc thighs will be the death of me.
This video really resonated with me. Being a player of a long forgotten fighter called Power Stone, it often felt futile to learn the game's ins and outs. My main, however, was the embodiment of what I loved about the game and video game characters in general. Besides the fact that he feels good to me and fits my playstyle, he also embodies the passion of a young man to follow his dreams.
if the game has two "random fighter" buttons, the left one gives you double damage for the first 60 seconds of the mach true story, check it out, absolutely not clickbait!!!!1!
I read a YT comment that said his rational was because man is made in gods image we are low tier gods. Just sounds like a lame excuse he made up because he's shit at fighting games and could never win with a low tier character. Like he's trash with high tier so imagine him on low tier.
M. Bison. Reason: the first time I picked up a fighting game, SFV, he was infamous to me for his power. Oh boy did he goddamn deliver on that. He walks and stomps all over his opponents with a smug grin and crossed arms and I absolutely love it. I stuck with him ever since I first tried him out and I've barely played any other character in my total 33 hours of playtime.
Greninja for his great neutral and off stage game. Also while being good, he isn't considered the best, so maybe nintendo will miss him with those nerfs this time.
Bloodassassin c he moves fast and does damage, but if I plain suck at fighting games (especially Capcom ones, where I can't even do the special moves) it's still the same...
Painwheel (Skullgirls) main here. Painwheel is a wonderful blend of "angry all the time" personality and a gruesome, hyper violent fighting style. For me, she's an aesthetic stand out in a cast of aesthetically strong characters.
I like big band and squigly because I'm a musician and I liked his combos, but I don't like big bands inputs so I don't play him 😢. Also makes sense that your photo is flowey and your a painwheel main
Not a fighting game by any means, but in League I tend to main the unconventional picks. Old and new Yorick, reworked Mordekaiser, Shyvana, and old Urgot were all picks I've used. There's something to be said for when your opponent just strictly doesn't know how how your character works, so they tend to underestimate your damage, ability to sustain, or just take bad trades. However, it can also be extremely hindering in a team setting when your allies don't capitalize on your pick. The number of games I've lost due to my team not grouping when I'm slamming down turrets as, leading to 2+ people coming to me but nothing happening anywhere else on the map, or games where I can get an inhibitor at 15 minutes with Mordekaiser's Herald + Dragon push getting dragged out to 30+ minutes because 1 or 2 people refuse to follow the play, limiting your overall effectiveness. When I played Smash Bros. a lot, with my friends I tended to play the less "cool" characters (until I went to a low-key tournament, where I played only Marth), regardless of their tier rating because my friends didn't really get them. I could crush people with Pichu because they don't know how powerful his foward smash is. I could play Ice Climbers and get a free win despite not having any tech because my friends didn't know how to play around the weak AI of Nana. When I played For Glory in Smash 4, I tended to play Olimar, Duck Hunt, Little Mac, Villager and Ryu. All these characters were unfamiliar (Ryu at the time being pretty new) so often enough I would get 'lucky' hits from my opponent just not knowing the timings. I've never been a mechanically strong player in any game, I'm just not able to make precise enough movements even semi-consistently. I draw a lot of my wins from picking an option that has obscure or less practiced counters. When I grab Herald AND the dragon with Mordekaiser, the smart thing for the enemy to do is to group up and DPS the dragon as much as possible, because that's a huge portion of my damage, then finish Herald. What most often happens though is people don't group and we shove straight to the inhibitor, or they play too scared of the dragon that is stuck in it's auto animation (Morde bugs lul) and we shove straight to the inhibitor.
In King of Fighters I always play Kyo, Iori, and K’/Shingo. I really like playing as them because 1. They’re simple and not that hard to learn and 2. I really like their characters and their lore. I always found KOF lore really cool and interesting and these are some of my favorite examples
The test of a well balanced competitive game is where it has a tier list but it is almost entirely inconsequential. The ability for casual and competitive players alike to pickup whoever they wish and have the potential to succeed in their respective fields is really impressive.
I think SSBU does this incredibly well, a good example is the fact that peanut, a player of a character who is often considered bottom 3, recently made top 16 at a major
In smash 4, Mega man Melee: Fox Street fighter in general: Ken Blazblue: Naoto/ Hazama Guilty gear: Ky, Baiken MK: Scorpion, Johnny Cage Pokken: Lucario Most SNK games: Rock or Terry

My picks: 1) If first time in the game - Pick the cutest or sexiest character because reasons 2) If playing casual - Pick the character with most diverse move set - basically a character that can do most things (E.g. Oswald - KOF XI) 3) If playing competitive against unknown player - Defensive character, Slow, Teleport, Counter, Fast Hurt Box (for poking) high HP/Def & Throws (E.g. Goro Daimon - KOF series) 4) If playing competitive against known player - Character with the most damage potential and non-complicated commands - in most cases, pressure type characters (E.g. Akuma - SF series & Kula Diamond & Geese - KOF series, Uriko - BR series) 5) If playing competitive against a combo happy / button mashing player - Counter-savvy character (E.g. Mary - KOF series) 6) If playing with an impatient character - Character with varying/fast over-head attacks and fast/cancellable swep (E.g. Sie Kensou - KOR series) And my last and final rule: If playing and my lady is around watching - Play a character that she likes (this overrides all other above rules)

The time required to learn a single character is so great that if youre not excited about your choice, youll most likely never have the motivation to put in the hours.
True.
It's important but the playstyle is just as important imo.
Simply because what if you find a grappling character to look cool and you can't do the grapples and none of the moves feel natural even after a week of training?
That sort of shit gives you that main crisis.
How I pick my character?

If they are fun to play

I main Sakura because I saw myself in her. I wanted to get better at fighting games because I admired players like Daigo and my more experienced friends at the time. She was cute, so I chose her, but I quickly found out how well she fit me. We both also admire Ryu, and for me, it goes back to admiring how much my older brothers would beat me up with him in Street Fighter II on SNES. I was awestruck and wanted these people to recognize me. So I went to practice and practice in hopes of one day coming back and showing them my true worth. And when it happened, becoming the best in my friend group didn't stop me. I'm always chasing Ryu.

mk is very good, but you can’t exactly just pick him up and wreck shop just like that. he just has an extremely high skill ceiling and great options. you just need to know how to get as close to that ceiling as possible and how to effectively use those options. ice climbers are bullshit though as long as you know how to use handoffs. it takes an okay amount of practice but i managed to learn handoffs and how to set them up in the span of a day. you got grabbed? sorry, your stock is mine.
James Johnston yeah if you’re at the basic casual level you can spam them. neutral b mostly

I main Marth.
In the Tekken games I tend to main King quite a bunch. I was really into wrestling back in the day, especially Rey Mysterio. The fact that King was a luchador who fought for children practically sold it for me, and I haven't looked back since :)

yeah, king got the coolest wrestling moves in all video games.
I maimed Miguel in Tekken. His Spanish heritage, unorthodox fighting style, violent tendencies, and his later amazing rage art (mained him before that), made him one of my all time tekken favorites, and I don't think Bandai Namco will get rid of him any time soon.
I main (slim) Bob, Hwoarang and Asuka in tekken.
I main Morrigan in pretty much any capcom fighting game that includes her.

Sorry.
In Smash I usually go for Pikachu or Falco. But later on i had amazing fun with Ganondorf. His voice is so over the top.

I just suck at fighting games period no matter the character I pick
Ayyy me too
We should all be friends lol
At least your honest and didn't blame it on lag, glitches, hacks, the game being generally unfair, and not calling me gay for winning.
SebTH1 pick Virgil in umvc3 I promise you will say different...
Bloodassassin c he moves fast and does damage, but if I plain suck at fighting games (especially Capcom ones, where I can't even do the special moves) it's still the same...
In skullgirls I fit big band in every team I pick. Because his personality, voicelines, theming and references are enough to make me like him.
FrenchDavid50
Big Band is such a fucking cool character. Literally everything he says is gold, especially the alternate Saxploitation voice lines.
FrenchDavid50 I picked up Big Band only because you can play music. I think I've spent more time learning music notes than actual combos.
Yes I love the references.. Especially the time stop
I LOVE big band and squigly, I don't like big bands inputs to do his combos though 😢. I was looking forward to play him too
And I'm a musician myself so another reason I picked him
for me, the factors of picking a character is
1: them not being evil
2: them being fun to play as
3: thats it
Painwheel (Skullgirls) main here.
I do the same in tabletop games.
In King of Fighters I always play Kyo, Iori, and K’/Shingo. I really like playing as them because 1. They’re simple and not that hard to learn and 2. I really like their characters and their lore. I always found KOF lore really cool and interesting and these are some of my favorite examples
K' Chain Drive is the coolest finisher
I am a Terry main.
In smash 4, Mega man
Melee: Fox
Street fighter in general: Ken
Blazblue: Naoto/ Hazama
Guilty gear: Ky, Baiken
MK: Scorpion, Johnny Cage
Pokken: Lucario
Most SNK games: Rock or Terry
Baiken... *kreygasm*
Ahhh fox main in Melee...
I play HFTF, and I picked DIO first. I had no idea about the matchups in the game, I didn't even know the button layouts. But I went into it with DIO, and even though he's a hard-to-master character, I absolutely love him because of the journey we went on when I first picked up the game.
My picks:
1) If first time in the game - Pick the cutest or sexiest character because reasons
2) If playing casual - Pick the character with most diverse move set - basically a character that can do most things (E.g. Oswald - KOF XI)
3) If playing competitive against unknown player - Defensive character, Slow, Teleport, Counter, Fast Hurt Box (for poking) high HP/Def & Throws (E.g. Goro Daimon - KOF series)
4) If playing competitive against known player - Character with the most damage potential and non-complicated commands - in most cases, pressure type characters (E.g. Akuma - SF series & Kula Diamond & Geese - KOF series, Uriko - BR series)
5) If playing competitive against a combo happy / button mashing player - Counter-savvy character (E.g. Mary - KOF series)
6) If playing with an impatient character - Character with varying/fast over-head attacks and fast/cancellable swep (E.g. Sie Kensou - KOR series)
And my last and final rule:
If playing and my lady is around watching - Play a character that she likes (this overrides all other above rules)
Your last and final rule applies to melee. Pick falco. Bitches love falco
By picking Kula Diamond you simultaneously check it with 1, 4 and 5 :)
nobody plays KOF
I love how you thank everyone for getting you to 30k when you’re now verging on 400k. You deserve even more man.

I really want to play him but he's to damn floaty. People just combo me. Other than that,he's fun
I tried him, but the double jump float is to trippy. His forward throw and f-air are great though. And the down smash looks totally badass.

I like how her playstyle is completely different to everything I have ever seen. So I gave her a shot, and here I am, using the most difficult and infamous character SNK has ever made.
6:07 dhalism is my waifu
A man of culture I see
Naw man, Vega is my favorite lady in Mortal Kombat.
YOGA FIRE!
I main Talim.
Because she as a pure heart and is so sweet.
Her fighting style is super fun to play and in Soul Calibur 6, they actually made her visually use her powerful wind enhancements which clearly make her looks like she actually uses winds spells.
