The earliest instance of the Mind / Heart / Body distinction comes from Plato's Republic, written in the 4th century BC. Plato identifies three parts of the human soul, the rational part, the spirited part and the appetitive part. Humans will behave in accordance with whichever element is dominant in their soul. Also, Plato was a champion wrestler. He would have played Zangief.

that's a very different thing: Plato was talking about a "three part soul":
      1. basic needs, urges, intincts, etc: hunger, thirst, sexual desire, that sort of stuff.
      2. emotions
      3. rationality/thought.
heart players still use their brains, it's just a different kind of intelligence, but it's still part of the third part

Boarky Leffen/Armada are definitely body player but they aren't nearly as much of a brain player as Mew2king so that's why I didn't put them in that category. Plus Armada learned fox simply because he's the best character and still knows Peach because of her combo stuff. Leffen definitely studies the game but he mainly practices more than trying to find new tech. Mew2king tore apart the game down to the last frame to figure out tech. That's the difference. Mango's definitely a heart player over a body player since he's played with a lot of characters and done good with each and still made risky moves.

The problem is many fighting games have execution that exists as such a brick wall barrier that a heart or mind based player can't compete at all.
This was the big problem with pretty much all versions of SF4. 1-2 frame links pretty much rules out anyone who isn't heavily in the "body" category.
Compare this to something like Skullgirls or Guilty Gear Xrd, where there are characters made for every archetype of player. I'd say the whole thought that you only really need execution is actually not a problem with the players, but a problem with what the dominant fighting games have been recently.

    80% Concentrated power of will
My favorite characters/classes tend to be ones that can punish heavily, turning a read into a victory. Otherwise I will play the characters I prefer like that instead. Everyone has a pattern since good fighting game players practice, but how they practice can be used against them. The best can turn a weakness to a win. I'm not saying I'm the best, though.
Unless it was like Smash 4 Pre-Nerf Bayonetta, that was pretty much just a win button.

Interesting question: what's the best path to improvement once you've figured out your "stats"?
For example, I'm mostly heart. Should I spend my time labbing or working on difficult combos to improve my mind & body, or should I be watching lots of replays to improve my reads to further improve as a heart player?

    • @BrenoPonce
      @BrenoPonce 3 года назад +34

Depends on your current level. If you still a beginner, focus on the fundamentals so it makes you have a higher range of tools.
Don't turn into a OTP with zero room for growing. Remember that the better your get at something, the harder it will be to further improve
Ex: Improving from 2/10 to 4/10 is requires less time than getting from 7/10 to 8/10

      @nekoraver6179 2 года назад +5

the real question is, how do you best learn? do you learn best by doing combos 1k times in training mode? or by trying to do the combo while you fight?
if you enjoy doing combos over and over again in training room then that's what you need to do. You might find out what kind of player you really are when you figure out how you best learn you combos
You got to take fighting games seriously before you know what type you are. playing casually will only make you feel like a heart player.
A true heart player will drive people into fits of rage with their dirty game play and seemingly randomness. If you never made someone alt f4 in a game then your probably a casual brain or body that just needs more time in the training room.....not like i know anything about that *whistles innocently*

I think Daigo is the only 555. Yes, I'm a fan, but I'm not fanboying here.
Daigo is known for Heart (Ume-Shoryu, need I say more?), but he also is a very tactical player which we can see from his history against Infiltration. Some pros say once Daigo starts focusing to beat you, you can't win. He also has all kinds of incredible setups with every character he uses. Remember his Ryu-Dhalsim games against Arturo and F.Champ in Super days? That's another five for Brain for me.
When it comes to Body, I think he is a five not because he has godlike reactions, but because with enough training, he can do any combo/setup consistently. He started a little jumpy with Evil Ryu, but today he does Sako combos like they are nothing.
That's what makes him world's best I think.

Changed my mind, here's my personal take on the 5 players mentioned at the end of the video on the scale of 1 to 5 (the order of the numbers are body, brains, then heart):
    Snake Eyes: 435
    Momochi: 454

    Luffy: 444

    • @SMRTMinako

    • @DridriKon

+Core-A Gaming Mhhh, very interesting theory.
And that's why I love Laugh, I think he'd be a great coach if coaching was a real thing in FGs (like it is in LoL or CSGO).
      So here's my take:
Snake Eyez: 3.5 (or 4) - 4 - 5 (I know Zangief has tons of 1-frame links, but having tons of years of experience, it's pretty much a second nature to do them now).
      Momochi: 4 - 5 - 4.5 (Well rounded).
Infiltration: 4 - 5 - 5 (I'd want to give him a 555 as he can switch to whatever playstyle he wants mid matches, but he must lack somewhere).
Xian: 4.5 - 5 - 3 (I don't feel Xian is someone who would go with the heart, his brain must always be ON when playing in a tournament. On his stream he goes a lot more with the heart but that's because he wants to put on a show, like Mike "Have you seen the read ?" Ross).
Luffy: 3.5 (or 4, I can't say) - 5 - 5 (As Infiltration, he can keep his gameplan at all times, even when he's losing at the life advantage and then go NUTS because his heart says so, also giving 3.5 to 4 on body thanks to his abilities on KoF13)
      Myself: 4 (I love execution ceiling) - 2.5 - 5
      As always, great work !

hmmm... Try doing them in Actual Combat. like PvE or something.
First Start in the easiest Difficulty (if you think its too easy or not learning much Crank it up).
and force yourself to do the Combo. once you can Kill the AI Without Getting interrupted you Successfully learnt the combo.
thats one Brutal way of Learning :P
The Tutorials Aren't Great for Teaching Players the Combos they are great for a Quick Reminder after you Learn the combo....
if you are having Trouble Learning the Very Long Strings of Combos, try Finding a Easier Combo that has a Similar Pattern to that one.
in Short - Yes, Repetition is the only way you can Learn the Combo, but people Learn diffrently
some people learn better When Stress(PvP), some People learn in a Control Environment (Training), and some other weirdos like to do both (PvE) (me!).
Try Finding what Ticks for you as a Player.
you learn how to beat the Adventure Mode using Basic Attacks. Maybe Try beating the Adventure mode using only Combos. its a Different Challenge but a fun one!.
if you can't do the Combo against a Bot then there is no way you can do it against a Human!

    • @Alche_mist

@@yogsothoth-tz2bu While I agree that the "Timmy Johnny Spike" differentiation is different (although the concepts are similar in that both of them are some player psychographic profile systems), I don't think Timmy has to be a casual/button masher. I'd say stylers are another typical players that would fall under Timmy (and they quite often are pretty good).
Think most Ganondorf/Falcon specialists. They aren't there for the character gimmicks (which would classify them as Johnnies), nor are they there for the tier placement as Spikes do. They are there because of the styles and because hitting a well-read Falcon Punch or stomping an opponent who wouldn't recover anyway is just so damn cool.

I remember the days where I would have lines of people trying to beat me and I would play so hard that eventually my entire body was trembling from the excitement.

I think Magic: The Gathering would fit more for competitive players.
Timmy: Picks what looks the most extreme, powerful, radical, interesting etc. Tend to be very aggressive players, but obviously lack in defensive
Johnny: Creative, complex setups, spends a long time planning their perfect setup, and are practically unbeatable if their setups are successful, but killing a setup will kill the entire match.
Spike: Hardcore, follow "the meta" which means they pick the very best techniques, even if it requires copying others, and maybe tweaking slightly to their suitability.
I know Magic is a card game, but it draws so many parallels with other competitive games, that it just works to explain.

Should I compare my "body, brains and heart" to some top tier players? if so, which ones?

Just analyze the way you play and realize that if daigo is considered a 555 on the little graph, then you probably aren't 555. For instance, I'd label myself like this: 3 heart, 1 brain, 3 body. In tekken, I spend most of the match conditioning my opponent and going for reads, which is backed up by my technical skill and I know fuck all about frame data and setups. I'm probably being nice to myself with these ratings too.

I don't feel like I fit any category really.. But I do think I lean more towards Body.
I hate thinking frame this, frame that, and I don't really like baiting. I just know that, when he jumps, and I can tell that he's gonna jump, I could do my anti-air and intercept him.
Yet, 9/10 times my anti-air won't work because of reasons. Like controller failing, my keypress failing, or simply his move has a higher priority than mine.
Friend casts Shoryuken? I could slide unde- No no , I still got hit in the head apparently.
Hmm.. Yes, Body seems to be more my style.

Zeithri You sound more like a brains player that needs to strengthen your body actually.
Just gotta get those reaction times up. Watch for subtle visual and audio queues in the game that make reacting to certain techniques easier. But it also doesn't hurt to use your heart and make a decent read every now and again ;-). Makes your opponent timid, like you're in their head!

  • @babyspine

    Okay so,
The brain is how well you can lab and learn all the technical aspects of the game like practicing advance combos, tech, and frame data.
The heart is how good of a player you are when it comes to doing reads and being unpredictable so that you can confuse your opponent.
The body is how well you can take all the above and actually execute it properly when push comes to shove and you are in a real match.
At least that is what I got from the video, amazing job btw love the content.

Is it bad that I don't think I'm any of these? I mostly use the tactic I call "tactical button mashing" which is where I try and overwhelm my opponent and don't really think about what I'm about to do. I feel like it's effective because my opponent can't judge what I'm about to do.

I think another way to name these categories (1.Mind, 2.Heart and 3.Body) are player who focus on 1.The Game 2.The opponents 3.Their Characters/themselves.
Depending on which part of the game you enjoy, the match itself can vary. I think this rule doesn’t just apply to how you approach your own game, but also how you approach a match based on your opponent.
If you fight a character you think is strong, you’d act like an anti-body player. Being actively aware of your opponent’s character’s options, you might opt to play like a mind player force bad situations because your know the matchup and can restrict the options.
If you think your opponent is labbing out optimal setups, you play like a heart player and read your opponent mapped out process then make unpredictable situations.
If you think your opponent is actively reading and forcing you into things. You can choose to ignore the mind games simply try to react like a body player.
It’s not perfect and there are several sub categories to this but it’s almost like a type triangle.
Can’t beat game knowledge if you’re only mechanical skill because you’re very predictable.
Can’t beat mechanical skill if you only read your opponent but don’t have the reaction to make good on it.
Can’t beat unpredictability and reads if your opponents react to your setup.

Great video! I would think that in the Wizard of Oz that the lion and the tinman would be the other way around though? Lion represents the physical body, he just doesn’t have the “nerve” to act with it, tinman represents the brain as he is the most intellectual of the bunch but desperately wants to feel, therefore searching for a heart (or soul), and the scarecrow we agree on, which is obvious. Peace!

I don't play a whole lot of fighting games -- mostly just Smash. Still, what I love about your content is how applicable it is to other games. For example, I think this mind/body/heart theory applies very nicely to how different players approach MOBA games. For my part, I'm a mostly heart and body kind of player in both MOBAs and Smash. I like to feel my way through a match, but I have to spend time practicing the mechanical execution of my character's abilities until I have an intuitive understanding of how to adapt to different opponents and potentially lure them into making mistakes.

As a fighting game player, the graph of which archetypes people fall into makes sense. I grew up on older games like Super Turbo, and frame data wasn’t even known to me or anyone I knew, so we just played out games and figured things out as we went. Because of that, I’m more of a heart and body player. Depending on what patterns I see my opponent do or how they react in certain situations, I think of a way to counter.
It wasn’t until sf5 that I started to really learn frame data and what certain things like standby, active and recovery frames were, as well as what’s plus and minus. It’s because of frame data that you can create your own combos and setups, present example of this is Smug with his character, G, and his sf4 main, Dudley. Because of his ability to understand frame data and constant experimenting in training, he’s figured out various damaging combos and setups for certain situations. He’s also able to read what an opponent will do and catch them off guard. And of course, his execution is great. However, sometimes he’ll drop a combo or make a wrong guess and be caught off guard himself, which is natural.
Why fighting games are hard to gauge someone is because people can learn how to adapt and counter on the fly, such as Nemo vs Infiltration when Infil switched from Menat to Juri during one tournament. During the latter matches against Juri, Nemo struggled at first to figure out the matchup and how Infil played. But, I believe after a match or so, he won.
Another example is online play. Against a random person, most often people will just go in and press buttons, basically throwing shit at the wall and see what sticks. These people, while they do get wins, they are the least consistent. This is where the idea of “letting players hang them selves” comes in to play.
Against a more neutral and defensive player who wants to zone you out and maintain space, it’s about reading their patterns and exposing the gaps.
The scariest player is someone who can turn on and off the aggression at seemingly random points but have great execution, reads and have setups that can bait you into something worse. These kind of players you don’t know what they’ll do and often, they outsmart you because of the random factor.
I could go on, but this post became an essay and I’m sure people are bored by now lol
