Guess it's just a change in the game and game design in general. Feel the same way about stuff like Smash Bros characters.

"the early ambassador required accuracy" *remembers spies shooting the space NEAR an enemy's head and minicritting them while also hitting anyone behind them*
*Remembers that the cooldown effect actually didnt prevent headshots from occuring, and you could out DPS any class at point blank range, AND IT SHOT THROUGH SENTRIES FOR SOME REASON WHEN IT WOULD HEADSHOT*
So basically before, it gave you more reward for a broken headshot hitbox but now they changed it so it gave less reward for an actually fixed hitbox? Ok valve
I agree and disagree. If we had the old Degreaser with the current day Axtinguisher, I think we'd strike a nice balance, or the new Degreaser with the *old* Axtinguisher.
What about the 3rd degree? It's the same as the stock axe, but has the ability to DAMAGE ANY ENEMY ATTACHED TO A HEALING BEAM. This alone makes the stock axe pointless, and because it can random crit, medic pairs get dropped very quickly (usually because even if the crit doesn't kill the pocket, the medic dies). It feels like such an underrated weapon since not many pyros use it. Very hilarious on MVM when you crit hit a giant bot and kill all his medics.
Genuinely surprised that no mention was made of how Soldier and Demoman had 6 shots in their primary weapons instead of 4 at launch, and their spare ammo count was nearly twice as high. Oh sure, it doesn't SOUND much worse, but have you ever been on offense on the last (or even second) stage of Dustbowl and your entire team's being completely walled by a few RED Demomen and/or Soldiers? Imagine them being able to shoot you twice as much! And for extra added fun, there was no way to repel explosives back then! Chargin' Targe didn't exist yet. Fists of Steel didn't exist yet. Vaccinator didn't exist yet. Dead Ringer didn't exist yet. Bonk Atomic Punch didn't exist yet. Even airblast didn't exist yet. And bear in mind that there were only 6 maps back then, and 1 of them was Hydro. So Dustbowl was about 40% of all games. Hope you enjoy being trapped in spawn 2 out of every 5 games!
@@acegamerultragamer1532 Even then, you needed Ubers and a level playing field to have a chance of breaking through all the spam AND the Sentries sitting around every corner. Neither of those things is a guarantee; the second stage of Dustbowl is notorious becaus some asshole designed it so BLU has to go through what's basically a door inside of low-ceiling mine in order to get to the control point. You could be a RED Soldier and be legally blind and still rack up kill after kill just from dumping rockets into the trench and then ducking back behind the edge of the roof or inside the CP building and grabbing the health and ammo in both places.
Only Demoman had 6 shots in a clip and only on consoles. Stop this spreading this misinformation, people. Reserve ammo *was* higher until January 2008, though.
Actually, the Ambassador began with full crits. It also had a HORRIFYING bug where it used projectile hitboxes. So imagine a hitscan weapon with no-cooldown headshots combined with the hitbox of the HUNTSMAN. It was surreal. Even worse, the Sniper vs. Spy update originally had it so you could ONLY unlock the weapons through random drops. It was a nightmare to say the least.
the problem that I see in the whole TF2 weapon choise is 1: every single weapon is either a trick one, or a "only the stats are different". on one side, there are the medigune, the bleutsauger, the jarate, the lucksman and so on on the other, pretty much every single minigun, the winger and so on; as I see it, their sniper rifle are the only ones that reached the middleground: they are all just that, a point&shoot, but all of them feels different while used (even the heatmaker) but as a result, there are the weapons that try to be part of both category and fail, like the backscatter, the bfb, the hlheater
The day 1 Cow Mangler was hilarious! There was a glitch where you could kill your own teammates! It also was a direct upgrade to the stock because it had 5 shot with no random crits being the only penalty.
Weirdest thing about the past TF2 was the fact that some combination of gear used to have bonuses, for example the Milkman scout: Equipping Shortstop, Milk, Holy Mackerel and Milkman's hat (no idea what it's called) gave the player +25hp bonus.
The balancing has always been weird. They just went from a period of poor balancing that was focused more on power than balance, followed by a few years of decent balancing that still didn't affect the things that needed a proper tweaking, concluding with the current state of balancing where the quality is once again crap but now everything gets to suffer for it.
You forgot how early on Sandman's downside also used to be that the bat deals 50% less to non-stunned targets, this was removed like 1 day after the weapon came out. And around a half month later they instead made it so you take 50% less damage while stunned
I like to think of the Dragon's Fury as if it has 2 airblast modes: Normal Flamethrower can airblast every 0.8 seconds. Dragon's Fury can airblast every 1.6 seconds. So far so simple, and that takes care of its downside. Dragon's Fury also uses the 0.8 second airblast timer for its fireballs. And if a fireball hits someone, that fireball-airblast timer is set to 0.53 seconds instead
6:00 Fun fact about the ambassador and why it got a "nerf" the after the first few days as well. it minicrited, yeah, but the accuracy penalty didn't prevent these from happening. The other detail was that the shot came from the tip of the model, the same model that is so large that goes through walls. Which meant you could walk up to the doors before a game started and headshot everyone you saw or use a window to shoot from safety.
A lot of earlier weapons seemed to really only be balanced on paper. One time in a blog post they mentioned they tried to make either a rocket or sticky launcher that yielded a single large blast at the cost of being a mag size of 1. Technically balanced on paper, but in gameplay it would have been a nightmare. The original equalizer was supposedly balanced by the full hp damage penalty, but in reality it was designed without thinking about gameplay and was super overpowered. Soldiers do not enter fights with full hp and a drawn melee. They enter with full hp and a full rocket launcher. If you have a respectable amount of hp, you keep rocketing even if you have a chance to 1-shot every class after considering crits. The only context you really use your shovel is when you are out of ammo at the end of the fight and close enough to try melee. In the context where soldier actually uses melee, the equalizer gives increased move speed to either close for an attack or flee and gives increased melee damage. Drawing board balancing is where a lot of +- stats come from, and they tried to address the issue with the beta.
I think I played tf2 about 300 hours/year from 2008-2011 or so, and maybe 10 hours per year after. I still haven't adjusted to many changes that are almost a decade old
I loved the pre-nerf equalizer. There was nothing quite like finding you've got 10 HP left, whipping it out and doing a suicide charge at the enemy. Usually resulting in your death but every once in a while you'd just go on a berserker rampage. Funny enough the reduced damage when at full health actually made it a terrible weapon for melee only servers, since at full health it just did a pathetic amount of damage.
1:18 the Shortstop's healing bonus was too OP heck i lived a lot longer thanks to that. But since the Shortstop's only interesting bonus was the healing bonus so they probably added the shove so the Shortstop has a bonus
And since you have to get right up in someone's face to push them it's not worth having, if you want to push people go and play pyro, scorch and all his primaries except phlog let you push people around much more easily than scoot
@@MrDuck-po3wy I know, but with most of the classes apart from support you'd be better off keeping a bit of distance from them since other scouts do more damage up close, soldiers can just blow you up, pyros I don't need to explain, demo would probably kill both of you, heavy is similar to pyro and engineer has a shotgun
Buffs Heater(heavy) Add stat, -on kill, user receives 35 ammo for the primary This would negate the more ammo used if you are constantly killing Volcano fragment Make the 75% damage nerf to 45% and make crit on burn Hot hand Just add -on hit, enemies are set on fire Or -teammates hit gain a speed boost Baby face’s blaster Rework the system -on kill, your speed increases -double jumping disables additional speed for 3 seconds before going back to normal Starting speed before kill is -15% Short circuit Make the primary fire the old secondary fire
As for the short stop im pretty sure its so you get them at the optimum distance for the weapon itself.. What else is the reason beside pushing people off of cliffs?
It's pretty impractical tho. The delay it takes for the scout to push, the weird hitscan that rarely actually lets the shoving happen, and the too long waiting time before you can try to push or shoot again. Makes it way easier to just use the force of nature, or just stock.
I think the Medic's update was plan before hand, just as you speculated about the Pyro's, on the note of imminent disaster. Like, maybe every player would hate playing Medic since ,and I might be wrong here, TF2 was the first FPS game to implement someone that ONLY healed, hell, even RPG healer characters do more shit than just heal in some games. So they couldn't know for sure that there would be a dedicated playerbase that would actually enjoy the experience, outside of Beta testers which could represent a minority. I feel this is also why they needed Random Crits to improve pacing longside Uber, not because they felt necessary the addition of another mechanic to support pushes, but because there was a possibility that they had just relied a major gameplay point on something people would end up never using (Medics). Also Classic and Quake TF 's Medic were pretty much a better version of TF2's Scout. So there was room for these sort of thoughts. So the Medic update was just straight up make Medic more aggressive. But since Medic was actually well accepted in the game's release, they decided to just make the new weapons to complement the heals by adding some elements of aggressive playstyle.

The Danger Shield rework was meant for against Pyros who harass Snipers with flare guns, especially the ones with the worst flare gun of all, Scorch Shot.
Coming back to the game in 2022, I'm getting nostalgic for the old game circa 2008-2011. Sandman stuns were actually pretty fun. I really miss the old GRU that didnt have health drain. And i'll never forget when medieval mode was dominated by 30-kill Eyelander demos moving at the speed of sound. (Coincidentally, that's why The Equalizer was introduced. Instead of nerfing Eyelander demoknight, they just gave soldier an OP melee too. Hence the name "Equalizer") Oh, and when did they remove KGB's taunt kill? I was really disappointed recently to discover that's no longer a thing.
The KGB actually never had a taunt kill. Its possible that a community server you've played on had it as a mod of some kind though. I've played on servers that allowed the Ullapool Caber taunt to kill despite it not officially dealing damage.
@@SquimJim Could be, i'v always been a fan of the community servers, and i used to frequent one that was big into mods and custom maps. I clearly remember it being a thing though

Scouts weapons, stock gun, milk, atomizer, soldiers weapons, direct hit/stock/black box, any banner, whip/escape plan, pyro's weapons, stock/degreaser... that's it, you just hold W and mouse 1 and that's how you win pyro, no need for any other weapons Demos weapons, demonkight build or iron bomber/crutch n load, any sticky bomb launcher other than jumper for sticky spam, any melee weapon, Heavy, tomislav, sandvich, KGB or Holiday Punch, engineer? widowmaker, pistol, jag. medic, crossbow, stock/kritz/vax, ubersaw (no other melees exist), sniper, any rifle, piss, bushwacka, spy? diamondback, stock, any knife.
@@beanking3426 Don't you have a higher crit rate with more uber, thus causing you to have a higher crit rate with the ubersaw not because of its own stats but because of it giving you uber after each hit?
The Ambassador could also penetrate when it first came out! I wish I could find the demo recording video from a decade ago that taught me about it, but I've got no luck so far.
Sometimes I wish there existed a "Proto Sandman" where the ball acts the same as the modern Sandman, but it strips the double jump instead of reducing your max health. Also I read once in a RUclips comment that someone said the Your Eternal Reward should be reverted to its original behaviour while the Wanga Prick should remain as-is (or maybe it was vice-versa, not sure). That's eomthing I totally agree with. Making Your Eternal Reward easier was, I guess, supposed to be a buff? Maybe? If it was supposed to be a buff then the original version should still exist since it has a different downside to the modern version, especially since that weapon has a straight clone already. Decloning some weapons in general would be nice, ideally to "pre-buff" states when possible if the pre-buff state had a different downside to the modern iteration. Let's just acknowledge that the Rainblower is a straight upgrade of the stock Flamethrower, and the Third Degree is a straight upgrade of the Fire Axe. Sure, they're very marginal straight upgrades, but they're still upgrades.
I'm kind of shocked that you didn't mention the fact that at one point a number of sets were released, such as the degreaser and milkman, which required the full set including the fairly rare hat at the time to unlock the set bonus. This was bar none the most strange choice ever by Valve in my opinion and the set bonuses were not insignificant. For instance the milkman set got a bonus 25 health to scout and the croc set for sniper meant you couldn't be killed by headshots. Maybe you covered it already, but I was really disappointed to not see this at least given a nod to.
Oh man, i wasnt able to find any videos of it, but the old ambassador was stupid broken, had alot of secret stats (Bullet penetration, easier to hit your shots, and so on) There was even an old clip that i dont think exists on youtube anymore, but it was of a spy and medic getting like 40 ambassador kills in about 8 minutes because of how powerful it was

Ok valve

What if we fight back with an army of BLU Demomen and Soldiers?

The first stats of the Sandman was so painful... No double jumping...

the problem that I see in the whole TF2 weapon choise is 1:
every single weapon is either a trick one, or a "only the stats are different".
on one side, there are the medigune, the bleutsauger, the jarate, the lucksman and so on
on the other, pretty much every single minigun, the winger and so on;
as I see it, their sniper rifle are the only ones that reached the middleground: they are all just that, a point&shoot, but all of them feels different while used (even the heatmaker)
but as a result, there are the weapons that try to be part of both category and fail, like the backscatter, the bfb, the hlheater
I'm sorry, but your English is terrible.

Weirdest thing about the past TF2 was the fact that some combination of gear used to have bonuses, for example the Milkman scout: Equipping Shortstop, Milk, Holy Mackerel and Milkman's hat (no idea what it's called) gave the player +25hp bonus.
It's literally called The Milkman, or Milkman, one of the two lmao
I’ve been playing TF2 since 2011. This vid was a nostalgia trip back to the original Soda Popper and Item Set Bonuses.

6:36 "Living on the Deck" - Metal Slug X, I see you are a man of culture as well.
Its like... you highlighting all of these old weapons being added really just highlights how depressing TF2 is today.
I like to think of the Dragon's Fury as if it has 2 airblast modes:
Normal Flamethrower can airblast every 0.8 seconds.
I'm loving the Metal Slug music in the background. Nostalgia came back along with the talk of the weapons and their balance history.
Some x10 servers use the pre-Jungle Inferno DDS stats, making snipers who equip it indestructible.
Say bonus one more time and something ends with me. I won't tell you what, but I will cease something's existence.

This was a long comment. Good Job! Your work here is appreciated!
You already get free ammo after you kill someone tho, and there are also like, dispensers....
The other changes are pretty alright tho, keep it up
2 years later and the video is still totally up to date.
Actually it is only a year later
As for the short stop im pretty sure its so you get them at the optimum distance for the weapon itself..
What else is the reason beside pushing people off of cliffs?
But this is only a valid reason for scout v scout interactions because the scout can easily use his speed advantage to do this against other classes
It's pretty impractical tho. The delay it takes for the scout to push, the weird hitscan that rarely actually lets the shoving happen, and the too long waiting time before you can try to push or shoot again. Makes it way easier to just use the force of nature, or just stock.
@@iug5672 I didnt say it was well thought out : P
Some people forgot about the xmas 2013 Short Circuit...
Kinda wish they added more weapons again like 2011-2014 was the best years of tf2
Yeah sure, add more weapons to make balancing even more complicated.
Start by fixing the awful weapons we already have
@@MrCastleburger bruh the weapons weren't awful before they got patched hell half of them weren't meta but got nerfed for no reason y'all remember bison and scotch shot
Garret Woeller
Lots of weapons were OP at one point but were then nerfed into the ground. (baby face’s blaster, dead ringer, sandman, caber, tide turner, loch n load, just to name a few).
So i get how it was necessary to nerf these OP weapons but they always ruin the weapon in the process.
Even so they nerfed the bison for no reason, that was dumb.
And btw the scorch shot got buffed in Gun Mettle to be really good and indirectly buffed in Jungle Inferno.
@@MrCastleburger oh really it was huh welp my point being is the guns should be good period let the competitive scene be damned and besides if we have the BFB in the middle of what it was and what it is now shit would be fine the over board nature of the balance team is making shit rough

Hence the name "Equalizer")
