What If Viserys Made Aegon His Heir? (House Of The Dragon)

  • It's no question that the naming of King Viserys's daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen as heir to the throne spread division throughout the realm and it only worsened when he remarried and sired not one but three sons. Despite the traditon of the realm and expectations of it's lord the king refused to name his first born son heir to the throne. An act that very well could have doomed the house Targaryen. But what if the king made a different choice?

Simply put if Rhaenyra was disinherited there would be no war because no one would support her.

First one is what if the series and Allison only had daughters. Like same amount of kids but all girls.
Second one I got is what if Otto suggested himself as a marriage candidate for Rhaenerya. I know that one is weird but I could see him doing it as a plan B if the series never changes his mind no matter what his blood ends up on the throne.

But if Alicent had only daughters, the only argument would've been a matter of Bastard Heirs over trueborn ones. Could still lead to conflict but, Daemon would still be seen as the male heir of House Targaryen, or at least his sons Aegon and Viserys

If they only had daughters then Rhaenyra would be the uncontested queen, specially since she married Daemon which would be seen by many to be the next logical King. The problem would arouse with the children. Was she married with Laenor before? Did she had bastard sons? etc.

Tbh it was fair. No clear ruler so he let the Lords decide and set precedence. It was Viserys' fault for either not continuing that precedence set, making laws and decrees to the law of succession itself instead of Rhaenyra just being an exception, or hosting a great council of his own

The issue is that it set the precedent of absolute male priority in succession. Therefore Viserys who only became king due to this precedent says his daughter gets to be Queen, screws up the system, because it is viewed as hypocritical and thus questions the legitimacy of all potential rulers, giving pretty much anyone a claim to the throne if they are legitimate and their daddy said so. This mindset later causes the Blackfyre rebellions...

I think you missed one disinheriting scenario. After Driftmark. At this point, Rhaenyra has had 3 obvious bastards, and one of them has carved one of the king's sons. That alone merited consequences, if Viserys had 2 braincells to rub together.
In the most severe case, he could have disinherited and exiled her and made the boys bastards to punish them. It would have made her hella salty, and the Velaryons would not be happy, but you would still get the internal conflict (with Vaemond's side supporting the decision, while Corlys raged about it)

The only downside I can see is that it would infuriate House Valaryon.
The Valaryons expected to be in line to the throne via Laenor’s marriage to Rhaenyra.
But if Viserys went back on that. It would be another smack in the face to the Sea Snake. Which might lead to strike 3 in his eyes.
1st strike. The great council ruling against them.
2nd strike. Viserys rejecting Laena to marry Alicent.
3rd strike. Viserys going back on Rhaenyra as heir to name Aegon.

Well she doesn't actually have to be present to get married that's just a custom, they can just have the ceremony without her and she would be considered married. Then if she tried to leave with Syrax it all depends, if she leaves with just syrax then they would just let her go and spy on her like what the previous king did, if she left with Syrax and dragon eggs or other family possessions then she would be hunted until they are returned and anyone who hides her would be seen as a enemy of the king
