Ahh, 90’s death metal is so much easier on the ears than modern recordings. I def believe there’s something to the idea of ear fatigue with modern music....dense track counts, too much compression, etc..,
I, for one, could definitely go without hearing drum triggers, DI guitar overdubbing, extreme master channel (no bus) compression, overloading 1K freqs, and drumdialed tuning of drums. I think what made death and thrash so great in the 90s and early days was simply its organic qualities. There were no severe advancements in digital tech, most recording was still somewhat analog and done by tape, drums in kit were tuned by hand (no dial work, no extreme attention to reverberating head tones), mics placed a bit more loosely, less mics too, guitar tones were dictated by the types of guitars and amps, vocals took a long time to record. Everything was more so organic. The thing that actually took time was getting the music correct in a correct take in the studio, not the production/mixing process. Tech is great and all, but when it out advances the musicians you end up with the current climate of metal and other various genres that depend upon said tech. Not saying its bad, but it's no ENTOMBED. Good on the ears, organic in the process.
