As a black kid into metal and punk in the late 80's slash early 90's, Rocky George was my hero. As corny as it sounds, he showed me I was the only black dude into this kind music. He inspired me to start playing guitar and after reading a article on ST, I started the Oakland chapter of the Suicidals gang. At max, we only had two members but me and boy Andrew repped ST and the Suicidals to fullest in the summer of 89, lol.
Props to Rocky, both Mike's and the rest of the Suicidal crew. I'm a member of the gang 4 life.

I liked him too in the 80's, also Ernie C. Here in Finland we didn't really know of the race problems there, specially because i was 10 yo and never seen a black person personally, only on videos, and i thought it was super cool. Now 20-40 years later, I've been thinking of the diversity of suicidals, early 80's and a mix of all major types, as it should be. Good shit!

Black dudes had a huge influence on the punk scene particularly in the early days on the west coast - don't let anyone tell you that blacks don't belong in the punk scene, ever.

This band probably saved my life in the late 80’s. I didn’t know anyone else was experiencing this level of gas lighting and bullshit. All I wanted to do was make art, skateboard and listen to music and this shit validated my whole miserable existence and gave me hope and a reason to rebel and defy. Long live suicidal tendencies.

Jesse...at 54 I still have a hollow spot in my soul from abuse. Not so much neglect, (I actually think that is worse in some ways). I was just talking about this with my buddy the other night. When you see loved ones hit and you put yourself in the line of fire just to spare them, you grow numb to the effects of the physicality of it. What you don't register is the mental aspect. I wouldn't say I am healed, but I long ago I was able to win a fight with my dad and end my feelings of fear. His dominance over me ended. The long lasting effects were the fact that I couldn't go into public spaces without feeling like I was being judged and challenged by others. Needless to say I was in many fights and lately, I feel like that was a lifetime ago. I still want to smash people all the time, but now I don't act on it. The irony will be some angry punk 1/3rd my age will probably smash me, but the physical pain is easy to deal with. Sorry for the long diatribe but Jesse...hang tough my friend.

I discovered them on the inside edge with morry povich, mid to late eighties, when some youth killed himself after listening to lots of suicidal tendacies. As someone who has suffered from depression my whole life i can clearly say "bullshit!". Actually loud angry sorts of music have lots of energy which actually act as an upper.
Really depressing music is slower and calmer like the music of the assholes in pink floyd. Before i realized what sons of a bitches they are i listened to pink floyd alot and that gets you into a really depressed trance. Suicidal tendacies is just good music with words people can relate to. Growing up, how many kids i knew that were institutionalized because their parents just didn't understand them.

On the Hardcore/Punk side people need to hear the cassette releases of Direct Action, the Young Lions , and YYY (or Youth Youth Youth) - all from Toronto in the 80's.

I can't tell you how happy I am that Suicidal didn't dry up and blow away in the wake of Institutionalized. I saw them in them in 1985 when they were touring the first record. So happy that they caught on with millions of people who enabled them a career; so that I am able to rediscover them at 53. Thank you to Suicidal Tendencies, and especially thanks to all you Suicidal Cycos for recognizing a great band.

"You wouldn't know what crazy was if Charles Manson was eating Fruit Loops on your front porch." What the hell's going on around here?
First off-let's take it from the start
Straight out-can't change what's in my heart
No one-can tear my beliefs apart, you can't bring me
You ain't-never seen no one like me
Prevail-regardless what the cost might be
Power-flows inside of me, you can't bring me
Never-fall as long as I try
Refuse-to be a part of your lie
Even-if it means I die, you can't bring me
    You...can't...bring...me...down!
Who the hell you calling crazy? You wouldn't know what crazy was
If Charles Manson was eating fruit loops on your front porch....
    Time out-let's get something clear
I speak-more truth than you want to hear
Scapegoat-to cover up your fear, you can't bring me
You ain't-never seen so much might
Fight for-what I know is right
What up-you got yourself a fight, you can't bring me
    Stand up-we'll all sing along
    Together-ain't nothin' as strong
Won't quit-we ain't in the wrong, you can't bring me
    You...can't...bring...me...down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, you can't bring me down!
    Tell them what's up Rocky!
    You...can't...bring...me...down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, you can't bring me down!
So why you trying to bring me?
Well you can't bring me down...No, no, no, no
Can't bring me down....No, no, no, no, no, no
Can't bring me down....No, no, no, no, no, no
Can't bring me down....No, no, no, no, no, no
So why you trying to bring?
Well you can't bring me down
Just cause you don't understand what's going on don't mean it don't make no sense
And just cause you don't like it, don't mean it ain't no good
    And let me tell you something;
Before you go taking a walk in my world
You better take a look at the real world
Cause this ain't no Mister Roger's Neighborhood
Can you say feel like shit?
Yea maybe sometimes I do feel like shit
I ain't happy 'bout it, but I'd rather feel like shit than be full of shit!
And if I offended you, oh I'm sorry...
But maybe you need to be offended
But here's my apology and one more thing...fuck you!
    Cos you...can't...bring...me...down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down-you can't bring me down, you can't bring me down!
    Can't bring me down!
    Can't bring me down!

I also seem to remember damn near wearing out 'Reign In Blood', 'South of Heaven', and 'Seasons In The Abyss' (on cassette 🤣). Death Metal was also just starting to crank out some really good stuff (Death, Pestilence, Obituary, Morbid Angel, so many).

He grinned for a sec, walked over to me and threw his arm around my shoulder like we'd been buds for life - My buddy couldn't believe it and grabbed a pic of the incident. This tune has been a favorite of mine for close to thirty years. Caught them live opening for Metallica along with Danzig at the Essex Fairgrounds. One of the best shows I've seen! True Story, Metallica was banned from ever returning due to the many noise complaints from that show!

Cool story, bro. I've been to many dozens of great shows but never caught Suicidal or Danzig unfortunately. To see them both at the same show is insane. Plus Metallica? Bitchin!.

God i like this song. Intense, melodic, raw and I love the lyrics.
"Just 'cause you don't understand what's going on
Don't mean it don't make no sense
And just 'cause you don't like it, don't mean it ain't no good
And let me tell you something
Before you go taking a walk in my world
You better take a look at the real world
'Cause this ain't no Mister Roger's Neighborhood
Can you say, "Feel like shit"?
Yeah, maybe sometimes I do feel like shit
I ain't happy 'bout it but I'd rather feel like shit than be full of shit
    And if I offended you
Oh, I'm sorry but maybe you need to be offended
But here's my apology and one more thing, fuck you!"

Absolute class by a bunch of what society called hard cases. I grew up watching them in the little clubs in long beach its when i was turned on to them i was14 n i would watch them from the shadows cuzz i was scared shitless of the mosh pit when they played this song but i finally got enough balls n i broke my pit cherry it didnt end well i got the shit kicked out of me butit was the most feeing time ive ever had. We were their to watch my freinds cousins band play they were called silent scream it was the best night ever. They kicked ass it was at the waters club man i still remember we even got kicked out of dennys after we ate of course cuzz my freinds cousin asked us if weve ever seen the ball slapper? Short story i never wannt to see anything like that again. II wouldnt change a thing from that night except for wishing we had smartphones back then so i could relive it u know. OH U R PROBABLY TRIPPIN ON THE PROFILE PIC THIS IS MY WIFES PROFILE MINE TOOK A SHIT....
