The Dandy Dozen⚾: 12 Vintage Baseball Players Whose Cards Are Worth Collecting!

- Опубликовано: 21 июл 2024
- I love collecting vintage baseball cards, as well as modern and ultra-modern cards! But sometimes, you get in danger of trying to collect everything! So I decided to invent "The Dandy Dozen," which is a list of 12 cards from each era, in each sport, that I'm going to target for my collection.
It doesn't mean you have to buy the rookie cards of these players, but by buying any of their cards, their values should continue to rise, and you can work toward improving either the year of the player's card, orthe grade of the cards.
#TheDandy Dozen Vintage Baseball Cards:

I can't complain about that list. One of my favorites is Harmon Killebrew. I wouldn't replace anyone with him though.. maybe if you extended the list out to 20:
13. Jackie Robinson
14. Carl Yastrzemski
15. Warren Spahn
16. Eddie Mathews
17. Brooks Robinson
18. Harmon Killebrew
19. Duke Snider
20. Pee Wee Reese
Good list, Cap! Jackie Robinson I cut only because he had so few Topps cards. Warren Spahn is one of my personal favorites, but he doesn't seem to get the hobby love that the others get. Thanks for extending out my list, Cap!
Great early must-haves list…. But, i would personally add Carl Yastrzemski
He was a verrrrry difficult cut! Who would you replace him with?
David I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this video. Great idea to do a series like this. When Ernie Banks came up I slapped an imaginary hype horn, lol You being able to do it along hobby lines with a tidbit of baseball history of each player is fantastic. Already looking forward to the next video!
@@DavidGonos i think I’d replace Frank Robinson with Yaz
@@justanotherprouddad1391 whaaaaaat!?! Man, I look at Robinson as such a bigger/collectible player. First guy to win MVP in both leagues, number retired by three teams, statue built for him in three MLB stadiums, first black manager. I appreciate your comment tho - for sure, this is a fun conversation to have!
Great picks ! I'll add one.... Harmon Killebrew
It’s weird, while he was a great hitter, it doesn’t seem like he has much hobby value outside of his rookie card, or very early cards.
@@DavidGonos Yeah I know, hence being undervalued. I believe vintage in general will only go up. Not near as speculative as modern imo.
Watched this again. Great commentary and illustration. Great vintage.
Oh awesome, thanks, Rick! Much appreciated! I’m going to be posting other vintage basketball one probably in the next few weeks!
Couldn't have made a better list myself! Perfect and great advice for newer collectors, or ones getting back into it after a long hiatus, who may be a little rusty!
Oh cool, thanks man!
Love hearing how different ages of collectors think! Back in the day Jackie Robinson was way behind Mantle and Mays. In the last 5-8 years he has surpassed all but Mantle in popularity. I'd go Mantle, Robinson, Aaron, Mays, (Aaron & Mays could be interchangeable), Williams, Clemente, Koufax, Musial, Banks, Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson - in that order for my personal collecting priority. Never been a Kaline collector. Thanks for the content!
Thanks for watching and commenting! My guess is that Jackie Robinson’s have climbed in prestige as we move farther along in history. That’s certainly one of the reasons I love his stuff! He was an amazing man, and an amazing player! I love your order of priority!
As a black person, I am highly on Banks and Aaron (Cubs fan from NYC here...) I should have collected more vintage but affordability was the issue. I'm gonna get me some 60s Aaron and 60s Banks. I grew up a Reggie fan and I have a few non RCs and an autograph of his so I want to expand to vintage baseball (I started in 78) because basketball became my mainstay and I have some vintage of those. I'm getting my vintage in SGC and cross them to PSA. Thanks for the list and tips.
I'm also a collector on a budget so thanks for keeping that in mind.
Strangely, Ernie Banks cards are pretty cheap in the ‘60s for sure. Not so much his rookie card or early cards, but man, I love Banks and have several raw that are dinged up, not worth even grading. But man, he’s fun to collect! Aaron, too, of course, but he’s pretty expensive throughout. Thanks for watching and commenting! Why do you cross the SGC vintage to PSA? They look so dang good in those tuxedo slabs, plus vintage SGC really holds their value. You should look for CSG and HGA vintage to buy and cross them over to SGC. Probably some great no -rookie deals to be found. Check out the Facebook Groups for HGA, CGS and SGC!
Willie Mays and Hank Aaron have always been my 2 favorites, with Willie McCovey close behind. But Mays will always be my favorite
As a relatively new guy to vintage, this sort of video is very informative for me! Probably mostly common knowledge amongst die hards, but it’s a great history lesson for me. Subbed immediately because I want to see what I learn about the other sports as well
Oh wow, fantastic, Brad! That’s what I wanna hear! Glad we can help. Feel free to ask questions, too.
Really enjoyed your video and subbed! The 2 biggest omissions for me were Warren Spahn & Yaz. I’ve been busy putting together a Spahn run. Looking forward to more videos!
Yeah… I love Spahn, too. I have a 1956 Spahn coming back from PSA hopefully next month. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing! (Yaz does make it into the Modern list after all. So does Brooks Robinson, after further review.)
Carlton never gets love.
Yeah, unfortunately, pitchers just aren’t as collectible. Who would you replace on her with Carlton?
Don Kessinger
Just found your channel and I've liked & subscribed. Looking forward to future videos. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome! Thanks, T BM! What do you like to collect?
Great list. A lot of talent. I can’t argue with it. Funny enough, I have individual playing days cards from all those guys with exception of the Mick. Was never willing to pay the Mantle premium. I plan to correct that someday, but not in a rush.
Wow! That’s a nice collection of cards! You don’t need a Mick with all those other cards, but I can see why you’d consider picking one up! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great dozen!!!! Looking forward to your Dandy Dozen series!!
Thanks, Jason! It was fun to do! I’m going to need y’all to help me with who YOU think would be better in each set. I tell you what, the Modern Baseball set is going to cause some serious disagreements! Picking just 12 guys from 1972 to 1999!?! Wheewwwww that’s tough.
@@DavidGonos Well thats the fun part!!! Perhaps make it into AL or NL, or pitchers and/or position players!!!! Either way you will need to narrow all that into a Top 12 Dream Dozen...maybe you can have the RUclips world comment for this....anyways looking forward to Your Top 12!!!!! Thanks for sharing!
@@jasonvtsportsguy2692 Yeah, I’m just looking forward to stuff like “How don’t you have Lenny Dykstra in that list!?!” Hahaha
New subscriber 👍 Love the content! I’m just back into the hobby and the “Legends” are definitely the most attractive for me to collect. Thanks for sharing.
Nice! Thanks, Bart! The legends are fun to collect now and enjoy in the future!
Solid list. Glad to see Frank Robinson on the list. Me personally, I would probably take Yaz slightly over Kaline, but it's close.
Yaz ended up on the Modern list, since most of his cards ended up in that era. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great stuff!
Awesome, thank you!
Just came across your channel. Love the topic and your choices. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Wow, thanks, Jason! I appreciate your comment so much - and thanks for watching! What do you like to collect?
@@DavidGonos I collect all the major sports. Vintage to ultra modern. Even some wrestling, Harry Potter and a few others. I love vintage the most however I find myself collecting a lot of modern. Vintage is king though.
@@jasonwolfe9892 wow, I bet that’s a nice collection!
Thank you for this video. It irks me that Stan Musial cards, for whatever reason, don’t attract the same love and valuation as some of his counterparts. He was a phenomenal player.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Robin! My ‘58 Topps Stan Musial cards is one of my favorites!
on the flip side that will make him more affordable to collect , but yeah I hear where your coming from ..
I agree 100%, got them all in various years, investment graded (8's) centered with nice eye appeal. Been doing this for over 14 years now. The prices have sure escalated during that time. Great video, really enjoyed the show.
Thanks, Rick! Dang, 8s!?! That’s great man, holy smokes. Who are your favorite players to collect?
@@DavidGonos If I can get a PSA 8 centered with nice eye appeal...that's my favorite player at that time. Right now, I am bidding on PWCC for a 65 Brooks Robinson PSA 8 centered with nice eye appeal. I've always wanted this card but, 65's are noted for being O/C. I'm paying twice as much as an off centered one but, it's worth it.
Correction. I'm bidding on Sirius, not PWCC, have so for years, lately PWCC because I can utilize the vault.
Awesome love it
Nice! Thanks for watching and commenting, J C!
New subscriber like the channel. 1 ted williams card in this group 1971 Topps. when he was the manager of the Washington Senator's
Hey Greg, thanks for watching, subscribing and commenting! That’s a great card! Any Ted Williams card rocks!
I hope you plan to put Pete Rose on the 70's list. My favorite Rise cards are in 69's with the old Reds striped uniforms, I'd had them on this list for sure.
You gotta watch it to find out! haha!
Not sure if the dozen are actually ranked, but Clemente would be number 2 behind Mantle if that were the case.
Hey Tod41! How does Clemente rank second? You mean by value? If so, the Willie Mays cards still rank ahead of Clemente's. Hank Aaron ranks higher in value, too. Thank you for watching and commenting -- is Clemente your favorite?
@@DavidGonos The stuff I collect - 1972 Pro Star Promotions - the Clemente is a lot more valuable than the Mays.
Just saw your channel! Great content in this one!! Been collecting a very long time. Working to complete '73 set! = Fun
Oh great! Thank you, David! A ‘73 set! Wow! Very nice, how far along are you?
Greg Morris has 1973 set breaks going on ebay. He's great to buy from
That's good stuff
Excellent looking forward to this series.
Thanks, Josh! What era of cards do you like to collect?
@@DavidGonos 90s and forward but i do have a hank aaron and Sandy Koufax in rough shape but still need to have. Thought about sending them off they may get 1s or at least authentic.
@@MJFAMILYTIMECARDS nice! That’s awesome man. You could also send to HGA and get a cool custom label or something, so that even if it’s a 1 or ungradeable, it’s still done pretty cool.
@@DavidGonos i never thought about HGA but that may be the best avenue. These are cards i got somehow when i collected as a child and now i can appreciate them more. Look forward to these different episodes of the series. I like how you put years they had cards available.
@@MJFAMILYTIMECARDS Thanks! I’m looking forward to doing this series for sure!
I’m waiting on your Dandy Dozen from 1901-1919. A lot to pick from beginning with Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, Speaker, LaJoie etc.
At some point, I’ll probably do a pre-war Dandy Dozen, but considering I don’t own any, I’ll have to do some serious research. I did do a video on that Nap Lajoie ‘33 Goudey, though! It’s a crazy story! Thanks for watching and commenting Razorbacks!
Thanks for an informative video! I did not know Stan Musial's first Topps card was his 1958 All Star.
That blew my mind as well! Thanks, J L!
Johnny Bench and Pete Rose!
Great catch, Mark -- but since most of their cards are post-1972, I have put them in the MODERN set of baseball players to collect. I know their rookie cards are during the vintage era, these lists are more for which players to collect, regardless of rookie cards or not. And you're right, Johnny Bench and Pete Rose definitely are collectible no matter if it's a RC or not! Thanks, Mark!
Great list
Thanks, Brandon!
All solid picks! Others I was thinking: Brooks Robinson then slightly newer Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench
The next video has those guys -- ruclips.net/video/uP7n04LS3qk/видео.html -- then I do one for the next group of players after that, also.
Good content, 👌
Oh thank you for watching and commenting!
Nice video...Kaline was indeed a great player but did not hit 500 homeruns...I believe he ended with 399.
Ahhhhhhh, dang it, why did i think that? Thanks for catching that, William! Thank you for watching and commenting!
JRI Cards opens primarily Vintage packs from the 1950's and up from graded unsearched, and sealed packs!!!
Oh cool! Good to know! Man, I can’t imagine how expensive those packs must be!
@@DavidGonos packs stay sealed as we sell individual cards in each pack. Pack fresh!! Check out our RUclips channel! Woooooo!
Love to see Clemente on this list at #7
Absolutely, and I’m sure a good argument could be made that he should be a little higher.
I think this was a very good video and I'd agree with almost every player picked. I'd throw in Pete Rose as a must have
Yessir, Pete Rose ends up being in the next video for the next set of Modern players to collect. He’s definitely one of the best! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@DavidGonos Pete Rose rookie card was 1963 so I just don't see him as a modern player. Players like Aaron, the Gibson, Killebrew, the Robinsons and even Willie Mays played more years with Rose than years without Rose entering the league. Gibson's rookie card was 1959 and Rose was 1963. But I do agree with your other 12 except although I think Killebrew was better than Kaline with his 8 years of 40+ homers and 572 homers compared to Kaline's 399 and Kaline never hit 40 in a season. But Kaline had the .300 average so either one is fine. I see Mays, Aaron, Mantle, Clemente, Rose and Ryan as the 6 most collectible of all the pre-1980 cards. Thanks for making the video and I'll check out your others
@@888strummer yeah, but as I explained in the video, Rose played well into the ‘80s, and most of his cards came after 1972, so I listed him in the modern group.
@@DavidGonos Well Pete Rose is right in between because he played 7 years in the 1960's and 7 years in the 1980s, but all the other guys started before 1960 so I get it. I look forward to your modern video and I'm guessing I will agree with all your picks or 90% like this one here. You might eventually do a video of the second wave of collectible players from the Mays era with the Robinsons, Killebrew, McCovery, Carlton, Ryan, etc, etc, etc!
Nolan Ryan & Pete Rose & Rickey Henderson & George Brett
All solid picks! They’re in the Modern version of The Dandy Dozen
I agree with your list 100% and have all of them mentioned. I have a fondness love for 1958 and 1965 Topps cards. I guess you could have given Rose a little mention even though I don't think he deserved to be in your Dandy Dozen. (Red's fans might disagree) Some of his pre 1971 cards are excellent.
Thanks, Jim! Watch the next video in this series and you’ll see I moved Rose to that section, since most of his cards were post-1972. He’s a must-have, for sure, I agree with you there! He’s top-3 in the Modern list!
A dozen good ones!
Sweet! Thanks for watching and commenting!
great video. I just found your channel and subbed, Please keep em coming.
Thanks, Ray! Much appreciated. What/who do you love to collect?
@@DavidGonos I collect vintage baseball cards. I collect vintage baseball cards for PSA Set Registries. I'm in the 300 Great baseball cards of the 20th century by mike payne, the post war rookie hof psa set, I also love doing psa topps player runs set registries.
I love the PSA set registry! Sounds like an awesome collection! Please explain the “PSA Topps player runs set registries”?
@@DavidGonos Sure, they offer different player run set registries. For example. 1. PSA Basic set registry for that player is all of they're base cards, topps, donruss, fleer, 2.PSA Master set registry which is ALL of that players cards including leaders cards, all star cards. Or 3. PSA Topps player runs, which is just that players topps cards. I just finished the PSA Topps Reggie Jackson Run and now i'm in the middle of the PSA Topps Carl Yastrzemski run.
Ohhh gotcha, that’s pretty cool! I actually have a PSA 5 1961 Yaz I plan on selling. You probably already have that one tho, in a better condition. Thanks for explaining the player runs!
PETE ROSE !!!!! Even though he was caught betting/Gambling on baseball. It's time he gets his day !! 😁👍
Watch the next video.
@@DavidGonos we'll do. 👍😁
Kinda surprised not to see Nolan Ryan on that list.
Since his rookie card was in the late ‘60s, and most of his cards were in the ‘70s and ‘80s, I moved him into The Dandy Dozen: Modern Players list. Check that video out!
Bob gibson deserves more love.
If you nominate someone, you have to also say who you’d pull from the list.
I tend to think the basketball "tall boys" are a bit undervalued right now, '69 and '70.
Interesting! I only own one Elgin Baylor tall boy from ‘69, not in great shape tho. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video, great list. I think a couple of them are too high on the list but I can't really disagree on these 12. Now please explain how we can get a good and affordable Mantle or May's. 😁
Thanks, Ken! Who would you rank higher or lower? I have no problem with the differences - makes collecting more fun! We all have our druthers!
@@DavidGonos Frank Robinson is a little too high and Yogi Berra is kind of iffy for me. Like Jeter, a lot of his fame and fortune came from what team he played for.
Unfortunately Stan Musial didnt have a Bowman card in 1950 and 1951.... I sure wish he did. As far as your list goes, I cant say I disagree with any of them. Well done
Thanks, James!
Great video!!! I really enjoyed! I subscribed, looking forward to watching more! I do vintage on my channel as well.

@@DavidGonos yes sir I do. I was recently on the Card Life. This is a good introduction to my collection
ruclips.net/video/YxBWNqhncRk/видео.html
Starting from zero...how would you guide a collector through the maze of sellers (older cards)??
It would certainly be awesome if some of the old guys would step forward..and give new collectors some help.
Here’s my playlist for Sports Card Collectors just starting out or getting back into it. ruclips.net/p/PLyKKvgC1JdmRrgbmnei-YhOJ_UM-1CvrD
Bob Gibson is a pretty good choice. I would also add Tom Seaver (he was better than Nolan Ryan) and Johnny Bench, is worthy of consideration, too.
Both of those guys (Bench and Seaver) were on the Modern Dandy Dozen list. Great players for sure! But most of their cards were in that second era.
I wish I could collect all of their cards! I have been collecting Yogi Berra cards. I never watched any of the players from the era (except on youtubes), but i love him the most. One by one, whenever I can, depending on my budget. Obviously they are not I great conditions, some has stains, some has rough corners. I was just wondering do you recommend grading those? What would you do?
Well, if it’s for your own personal collection, then that’s up to you. I like to grade most of my older cards that aren’t creased bad, or have pen marks or whatever. You could also take them to a card store to see what grades they think they might get. I have a 1962 Topps Yogi Berra coming back from PSA next month hopefully, that I’m guessing will get a 3 or 4. But I’m cool with that cuz I’m going to display it with my other favorite cards. If you don’t want to spend for the grading, you can put them in magnetic one-touch protectors, and that makes them look nice too.
Yogi was a gem. I was lucky enough to meet him at a mall signing when I was 11. He spent a minute talking to each person getting an auto. To this day, I consider him to be one of the nicest people I ever met.
The "Chairman of the Board," Whitey Ford.
Was that his nickname!?! I had no idea. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@DavidGonos Yes, sir. I got to meet him a few years back and had him sign a baseball for me. He was very kind and gracious. I asked him what his favorite World Series was, and he told me "all of them!"
@@krankrocker haha I love that! Thanks for sharing!
As a Cubs fan I am curious what are your thoughts on the collectibility of Ron Santo and Billy Williams.
Well, the good news is that because the Cubs have fans everywhere due to WGN, and their general easy-to-root-for lovable loser kinda ways, I’d say Santo and Williams are more collectible than similar medium stars of other teams, like say the Brewers or Phillies. But overall, they’d likely be a few notches down from the players on this list. Maybe ranking in the 30s? Thanks for watching and commenting, Chad! I love the Cubs and have several Billy Williams cards!
@@DavidGonos That is exactly where I was thinking as well. I have just gotten back into collecting cards and have going with mostly vintage ones. Best ones I have picked up so far are a 56 Banks and a graded 5 61 Santo.
@@DavidGonos I am looking forward to your other videos especially the one that discusses the 80's players to collect.

Willie Mays final card is 1973, not 1974. And Ted Williams has no cards in 1952 or 1953 (Topps or Bowman).
Mays is pictured on a card in ‘74 that goes uncredited with his name, but many consider it a Mays card. I must’ve misspoke on Teddy. Thank you for correcting me and thank you for watching, Daniel!
'74 was last card where he is in action .
Was just in st.Louis for games against the Yankees and went to a memorabilia shop and the owner knew Bob Gibson ( and Lou Brock) he told me that Bob kept every single card that was sent to him to sign.
