    The guy who deserves some love on this list or the previous is Willie McCovey. He was a terror in the late 60s. Another guy who played a long time and his career bridges your two time periods like Yaz and Brooks. His most productive seasons were the late 60s but his career spanned from 1958 to 1980. MVP in 69, HOF, and an icon for the SF Giants. Sparky Anderson said: “Here’s a guy who is the most feared in baseball, but everyone pitches around him. If you let him bat 600 times and pitched to him instead of around him, he’d hit 80 home runs."

    • @DavidGonos
      @DavidGonos  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, McCovey was awesome for sure. Outside of his rookie card and his early years, he doesn’t seem to be super collectible tho.
      Who would you replace on the list for McCovey?

  • @cardboardcheddah3715

    I gravitate to only collecting graded rookies unless I’m building specific sets. I like low grades with subgrades and centering over condition. Sandy Koufax is one of my favorite pick for a solid sports card investment,imo.

    • @DavidGonos
      @DavidGonos  2 года назад

      Great comment! Koufax is one of my favorites - and since he didn’t last for too long, there’s a finite number of his cards out there, making you capable of collecting them all without killing your self!

    Wished I would have seen this last year... I agree with some below, Gwynn, Maddux, Boggs, Ripken Jr, and who I actually feel caused the sports card hobby to jump through the roof in the mid 80's... Donnie Baseball, Don Mattingly! The man is STILL being featured in sets on a regular basis these days!

    • @timmcdonell9595
      @timmcdonell9595 5 месяцев назад

      @@DavidGonos That's easy... Bo Jackson. Bo came in with some hype, but injuries wiped that out. Mattingly not only had a longer and better career, but he's WAY more collectible as well. Outside of Bo's 1986 Topps Traded "Tiffany" PSA GEM MT 10, you can buy 8 different Bo "Rookie" cards from 1986 AND 1987 for less than the cost of a 1984 Donruss GEM MT 10 Mattingly. And, just like Bo, if Mattingly doesn't hurt his back, he'd be in the HoF and most likely a WS Champion to boot.

    • @DavidGonos
      @DavidGonos  5 месяцев назад

      @@timmcdonell9595 We'll agree to disagree on that one. I can understand Mattingly being more collectable for Yankees fans, which brings up the level all around, but I don't think to the degree that Bo does. Either way, it's fun discussion for sure! I like Mattingly, too!

    • @timmcdonell9595
      @timmcdonell9595 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@DavidGonos no argument from me on who you feel is more collectible... I mean, it is your channel, lol. But, check Baseball Reference for comparison between the two as far as stats... Bo was an INCREDIBLE athlete, one of the greatest ever, but the injuries derailed him. I would have loved to see him play an entire career at both sports. As far as collectability, who or what determines that? I'd say supply and demand, so if that's the case, why do Don Mattingly Rookie cards go for more? Innocent question there. Of course, now you have me looking at Bo Jackson cards! 😆

      1973 and 1982 Topps had the worst card stock Topps ever produced. They used recycled paper, and that doesn't help Ripken's Topps base RC either. One thing that helps Cal was being a franchise player, playing exclusively for the Orioles his entire career - not many modern stars have done that. If you're an Orioles fan or are a collector living in MD, Cal will always be high on your list. Of course, his shining moment was breaking Gehrig's record - one of those records thought to be unbreakable.

    This is super enjoyable series. I love the big unit randy Johnson i know pitchers card seem to not be as favorable but man he was fun to watch. My thinking is - those steroid guys, the major ones we loved to watch, will someday get in. So buying now, while they’re ultra cheap, is a good idea. Which Mark McGwire RC is your favorite? The ‘85 Team USA one is great, but the look of that ‘87 Topps is pretty awesome with McGwire in the A’s colors. Thanks for commenting, Josh! The Big Unit was awesome to watch, too! I miss the Expos!

    I agree with most of this list except for the last 2 in Bo and Mariana who I would replace with McCovey and Killebrew since you have Brooks Robinson on this list who started before them and ended before them. Killewbrew and McCovey both had 500+ home runs and were among the most feared hitters, along with Mays and Aaron; which separates them from Brooks. But the first 10 on this list I totally agree with.

    Nice video, very informative. However, you did make me scratch my head when you compared the hit totals of a predominately singles hitter Pete Rose to a phenomenal home run hitter in legendary Albert Pujols who is just 4 HRs away from 700 and despite his power still has well over 3000 hits! Comparing a top of the lineup singles hitter to a power hitter who also did not strike out that much compared to almost all of the other power hitters I feel was not a good comparison. We can only wonder how many more HRs he would have hit if he stayed in the city that adored him in St. Louis…..

    • @DavidGonos

Firat of all, Randy Johnson is the BEST LH pitcher ever (I don't wanna hear about Koufax btw..... Randy was better). Schmidt is considered the best third baseman ever (I agree), and Maddux and Pedro are among the best starting pitchers ever. I love me some Rivera (a great pitcher and a super good person), but I am willing to bet that if you ask all the GM's in MLB if they could have any of the 3 pitchers i just listed (Pedro, Randy, and Maddux) on their team for their careers or have Rivera, nearly every GM would pick one of those 3 and not Rivera. Mariano Rivera was the 'Babe Ruth' of relief pitching. He earned his name "Mr. Automatic," and year after year. An anchor of the last Yankee dynasty and threw one of the nastiest pitches in baseball history that seemed to just disappear at the plate. All this in the brightest spotlight in MLB while remaining humble and a class act. I agree with David's choice to include him on the list. As far as Randy Johnson being the best LH pitcher ever - what about Lefty Grove, Warren Spahn, or Whitey Ford?
