Well I mean I understand the hate for it the n64 aged like milk compared to the other consoles of the time and the controller is kinda trash but you can just use a brawler controller instead if you don’t like it it also has an absolute ton of bad games and n64 is the worst port for 3rd party games but the first party games are great on the console it’s a good console but it’s definitely lacking more then some other options from the same time period

@@pepperidgefarms1772 The N64 is not without its issues, but what are you comparing it to, the PS1? The Saturn? The cartridges allow for lightning fast load times, and there are a bunch of games which have aged very well, most of them being first party or second party Nintendo titles. N64 consoles are also just physically more durable and long lasting than the PS1 and the Saturn because of the lack of moving parts, with the exception of the control sticks, and first party memory paks (which are a pain in the ass to repair once the battery fails).
I have tried to get into Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and I have always felt that these games are inferior to the original Mario 64, and that's not a controversial opinion, at least when compared to Mario Sunshine. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are much more highly regarded, but I still just haven't been able to get into either of them. The control just feels less precise, Mario feels slower, the gameplay is more scripted and linear, and doesn't reward experimentation as much, and I really am not a fan of the way you're supposed to use the Wiimote to do the spin move, or to shoot those little colored stars.
I have a third party memory card for my N64 which is over 25 years old, and I was able to replace the battery with a one or two dollar watch battery I found at my local supermarket, and all I needed was a small screwdriver to be able to do the replacement.
You can buy replacement control stick parts for surprisingly cheap, and it's not especially difficult to do the repair yourself. All you really need is the right screwdriver, and you can also just buy a modern third party N64 controller like a Retro Fighter 64, or look for refurbished original N64 controllers (I'm planning to sell some of my extra ones on eBay once I get them fixed up).

Happy to see my favorite N64 game Ogre Battle 64 make the list! In fact, quick little story for you (😉): I worked as a teller at a bank back when OB64 came out. During a slow work day I thought I’d be clever and print an online guide for the game with the bank’s paper and ink. Little did I realize just how many pages, detailing units, items, and strategies, comprised this guide. I hastily had to reload the printer with paper as it continuously printed what turned out to be a rather thick tome for about 10 minutes or so. How I didn’t get caught or in any trouble still baffles me to this day!

This Timmy got rid of his Sega because "videogames are for children" and started going by Tim. When we self actualize and understand being an adult means we get to choose what we enjoy, a past world of things left behind becomes ours for rediscovery.

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike Год назад

Absolutely, but he made it pretty clear at the start that this that it was a list for people who hate the controller. And why do so many hate the controller? The number one reason is the horribly aged stick, with the foggy graphics and 3 handles on the controller being a fairly close 2nd and 3rd. With these games you can eliminate some of those annoyances. 2D games don't suffer from the fog, and in some of these you use (or can use) the D-Pad. As for Star Fox 64, using the stick is a little less annoying since it's only used for moving your ship and not for platforming. Can't say that for Paper Mario, but it still eliminates the fog issue being a 2D game.
*Edit:* Foggy graphics are obviously not a controller issue, so my bad. Stupid me just ended up grouping it in with the controller issues in my mind for some reason, but it is another reason people hate on N64 anyway.

I might have gotten into that game if jump could have been mapped to a button, and there were a few other things that I found a bit annoying, like the shaking mechanic, and some of the sounds. I really cant' stand having to press up on the D pad to jump! >:(
The game definitely looks great and I do respect it. In hindsight, it's clear that the N64 was actually very good at doing 2D, and it's a shame that there weren't more 2D games (or games which blend 2d and 3d graphics) made for the system. Yoshi's Story, for example, looks absolutely amazing, and is a solid game, though most would agree that they would have preferred a more challenging game which was more similar to Yoshi's Island in its gameplay.
2D games really weren't that popular on other systems as well. Even great 2D games like Castlevania Symphony of the Night (for PS1) didn't sell well, despite receiving critical acclaim, and the poor performance of even extremely well made 2D games really contributed to scaring developers away from investing in making them. It took years before 2D game development became normal again, proving that game developers probably never should have completely abandoned it in the first place.

@@Gutsyredcoat Road Rash 64 is one of the most entertaining 3D retro games out there. I love how the game is unintentionally hilarious. It was supposed to be this badass hardcore combat racing game, and it does succeed at being a worthy sequel to previous Road Rash games, and is a solid combat racer, but... There's something about the combat, the sound effects, and the physics which comes across as incredibly absurd to me, and I know I'm not the only one who finds it hilarious, making the game likely to be well worth playing, if only for a few hours.

@@syncmonism i have always found it intentionally hilarious. The devs definitely had good senses of humor. With rider names like stinky, dirty ed, big jim, lucky gene etc. The fact that there is a giant banana as a weapon, the ridiculous sound effects of characters all the "whoooooaaaa! Dohh! Gaaaahhh!" The silly consolation prizes while calling you a loser like a pet rock, stick of gum, the shit talking the mechanics and cops do if you total your bike or get busted, the 4X damage multiplier that just sends doods flying in one hit and of course the insane mode you unlock when you finish big game with the 300mph bikes that are impossible to control, as well as the scooter mode which just makes for a great slow moving race to just beat the hell out of each other. The combat, beating everyone off their bikes and racking up your rap sheet, hitting pedestrians, taking out cops and damaging cars is way too satisfying. The physics make for some hilarious wrecks that many can never be duplicated again, making every race unique in that way.

Well, I was (still am) a 3d animator since 1994, familiar with 3d rendering concepts like anti-aliasing, texture filtering, dynamic lighting, etc, even as a kid I knew how many advances the N64 brought to the table. It had Silicon Graphics DNA for a reason. A bunch of haters have ZERO idea whatsoever what these things meant in a home console in 1996. Gamecube games aged better overall, but I'll always love N64 more.
It was limited in games, but at the time, many were generation-defining experiences that stood as the best entries in their series. OoT was way more impactful than Windwaker or TP, just as Mario 64 was more impactful than Sunshine.
It also kicked off many popular IPs like Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Mario Party, Banjo, Paper Mario, etc
GC gave us great entries in less popular IPs like Metroid Prime & F-Zero GX, and introduced Pikmin, but at the time they mainly stayed contained among Nintendo fans & didnt have the reach the N64 titles.
N64 also popularized controller features like analog stick, rumble, trigger button, and 4 ports default. Anyway, i still enjoy playing GC games more NOW, but at the time, N64 was more special to me.

I think one of the most overlooked reasons that N64 games seem so long in the tooth is the controller. I like the bizarre form of the n64 controller more than most, but I think that since it was so different, whether you're playing ports/emulating on a platform with a more modern controller or playing on the original hardware, the controls are just so different than everything else we've been using for the last coupe decades that it feels strange.

I'm honestly rather fond of the early 3d look of 5th gen consoles and pc games. Requires imagination but it's neat seeing how hard some dev's had to work to make something vaguely convincing back then lol. Golden Eye is perhaps my favorite from this console still, something about the gameplay loop never gets old to me(btw use 1.2 control scheme, you'll thank me if you never tried it)

I have one that is the kind of game no one would guess.
An N64 game I can and always will play is Worms Armageddon.
It's one of those things where just looking at it I figured it wasn't for me.
I had some nostagia for it, decided to pay too much for a copy and tried it out and now I've put about 60 hours into it mostly just selecting randomly generated maps and trying to beat the overpowered A.I., beat the story mode and campaigns too. Probably says more about the game overall than it's N64 port but I like playing it that way.
I'd also add F-Zero X and Puzzle League.
I also agree with Mischief Makers, I'm still going back to beat my clear times in that one.
Also 64th like on the video, your welcome

for me its 1080. still never get tired perfecting my racing lines down the mountain and trying to beat old records. which is pretty tough considering I held some former world records back in the day for the game :) still the best technical extreme sports arcade racer imo
also, dont underestimate the value of a good controller when revisiting these games. few years ago I was struggling w my OG tri-prong thinking the console had aged terribly, but in reality the controls were just non responsive due to stick wear. got a new controller and bam - literally a totally different experience
