Growing up during the console wars, I was a Super Nintendo guy. A ridiculous amount of memories with the SNES, so many amazing games. Whenever a snowstorm hits and we’re stuck in the house, me and my daughter play Link to the Past, Super Castlevania IV and Super Mario World all day.

Not only does the snes have a crazy great library, so many more of the games (compared to NES) allowed you save your progress and pick it up later. For games like Super Metroid and Zelda - A Link to the Past, that's HUGE.

I remain convinced that if Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES had had a save battery, Super Mario World wouldn’t have felt like such a quantum leap in comparison. SMB3 was such a struggle to finish in one day, and my parents would often kick me outdoors to “play outside” long before I could finish it. Only once did I make it to World 8 without any warp whistles.

Honestly, the SNES is still one of my favorites. It has aged beautifully. It was like the perfect evolution from the original NES. It took the groundwork from the original NES and just made it even better!
Unfortunately, I didn't get an SNES until later in my childhood, but a friend of mine let me play his and the SNES constantly had me in awe at all the amazing games in its library.
One of my absolute favorites is the puzzle game *Tetris Attack* I still remember renting the game on a whim as a pre-teen and playing it non-stop. It is one of those games that is easy to learn, but hard to master. Although, there are still dozens more SNES games that I still revisit to this day!

As much as I love the 2D sprite based games, I feel the original Star Fox is worth mentioning. It's still my favorite in the series. The gameplay is excellent and I honestly like the blocky polygon graphics. They give the game a unique look that adds to the charm in my opinion. And the music and sound effects are outstanding. It's short length makes it an easy choice to replay every now and then, and the 3 different paths add a lot of challenge and replay value as well. I still have yet to beat the hardest one after all these years.

First, kudos that you give drinking water such a positive image in many of your vids, I really love that👍.
BTT: The Super NES, was the first console my two brothers and me put our pocket money on to afford it together. And as you already stated in this video, these games have aged superb IMHO.
Finding a Top 5, not an easy one, since you already picked my favorite ones 😂.
    1)Mario Kart:
This is definitely a candidate for me. Even my mother loved to play it and it was a game that defined a whole new genre. Many tried to copy this formula some failed and some came out greater (like Crash Team Racing or Sonic All Star Racing).
    2) Street Fighter 2, a great fighting game which brought Arcade feeling home.
    3) Asterix and Obelix a cool Jump And Run with some "beat em up" influence and this is Coop playable.
    4) Turtles In Times
Yes, again a beat em up but great to play together.
    5) The Super Star Wars games
Technically these are three games, but these run and gun games are still fun to play nowadays.
And last but not least, a little bit off topic: it's great to see your channel is growing and how many people you are reaching. You are good guy and your vids give so much joy in a world where things don't look that lovely.

Man, I'm really not qualified to talk about this. I really like a lot of SNES games that most people would consider unplayably dated. I remain a big fan of F-Zero, Stunt Race FX and even Starwing (which runs a lot worse than the 60Hz Star Fox). The 2D platformers are typically the most universally welcoming. The 16-bit era was probably the best for cartoon licences, and there's a lot of great surprises if you go digging through them. Aladdin is one of my favourites on the SNES, and Inspector Gadget's surprisingly really fun too.

Picking 5 games for it that will always be be fun is only hard b/c there's so much awesome stuff in the library. I'm going to go with SMW, F-Zero, A Link To The Past, Final Fantasy III, and Super Street Fighter II. Still, there's just so many classics on the SNES.

You got to love the super Nintendo. I do so much so that last year I paid $125 bucks for a SNES Jr more I think than it actually costed at its most expensive when it was brand new. One consolation it did come with a game. Seeing super Mario world really takes me back that's when I still don't own on the super but it when I think of video games is a little kid that's like the video game that comes to mind over any other ones. A dark horse title that people probably don't think of as much final fantasy 6 that game has some serious replay value

Since no one has mentioned it yet, Nintendo actually did release a modern Mario side-scroller called New Super Mario Bros. U. It was released on the Wii U back in 2012 and was fun because it was a 5 player game. I played it with my wife and we jokingly called it the relationship tester as you can easily cause the demise of another player if everyone playing doesn't work together. It was a blast though and I think you can buy it on Switch now.

    • @homerthompson416

If you haven't gotten Super Mario Maker 2, the story levels alone make it IMO easily the best 2D Mario game since at least New Super Mario Bros on the DS, and I'd probably even put it above that classic and call it the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  Год назад +2

New Super Mario Bros. U is indeed a fun game to play with friends, but I was referring specifically to 2D sprite-based Mario side-scrollers. As for Super Mario Maker 2, the story mode didn't seem like a true successor to the classic side-scrollers to me. It's been a while since I tried it though. Your comment has me curious to try it out again.

Just as a note, I think Nintendo is in a weird spot with 2D Mario games. They did the whole lazy as heck “New Super Mario” thing (which admittedly could have done a LOT more to push the genre forward). But once they made Super Mario Maker, I struggle to see them besting what the community has made with rather simple tools. So unless they want to do a whole Yoshi’s Island thing and completely rethink the series, they might not do anything with it again.
Also of note, Nintendo’s internal teams are split up very specifically. The team that makes 2D Mario games are also the team that makes Pikmin. That’s why we are finally getting a new Pikmin for the first time in years: no new 2D Mario game in awhile. My guess is they started working on Pikmin 4 several different times over the years but started in earnest after the DLC for SMM2 was completed back in 2020. So yeah, I’ll be very interested to see what that team does next after Pikmin 4 ships.
