I think I finally figured out what your style reminds me of. As a kid I loved those old school Disney cartoons that were always basically, “Goofy learn how to whatever” and the narrator would talk Goofy through how to ski or play baseball ect. The whole time Goofy doesn’t speak, he just physically reacts in funny ways. I always loved the vibe of those cartoons and I really like this too. Extremely well done and creative!

Donkey Kong (1994) is a gem for anyone who has ever played it!! The beginning of the game basically tricks you into thinking that this is just another basic DK game - a port released for the Game Boy...But Wow!!! Soon after those initial stages, the game hits you and transitions into so much more! Also, Mario can perform these fun secret acrobatic moves that are actually demonstrated in the game's introduction. It's such a masterpiece!!!

The game I was always go back to is Final Fantasy Legend 2(Saga 2) on the original GB or even better, the DS remake.

Let’s not forget the many great games for the PSP,like Silent Hill, Power Stone collection,FF tactics, the Parodius collection (Japan only but region-free).Also, almost all Atlus/Atlus published games for handhelds were excellent- Demikids, Riviera,Crimson Gem Saga,Drone Tactics, Luminous Arc, The Dark Spire, etc. But, ultimately, one of my favorite portable games of all time is definitely Yokai Watch 2 Psychic Specters just for the sheer fun I had playing it for hours on end. The Devil Survivor games rock also. Man there really are a lot of great handheld games to enjoy out there!

Elite Beat Agents!!😊 It’s on the DS. It’s an awesome rhythm game where different songs play for different levels, a la Guitar Hero. A gaming magazine one time did a top 20 list for the DS and they put this game at number one!!!😮 Btw, as far as games that make you think and are really satisfying after beating the level, I’m going to cheat (because it’s not a handheld, sorry😢😅) and say The Adventures of Lolo on NES.😊

For me, the #1 forever and always playable handheld game is Mario Golf: Advance Tour. The control is so snappy and satisfying, it's fun to just play a few holes and go for Eagles and Albatrosses without worrying about the score. Draining a long chip-in through the wind with that perfect touch of backspin absolutely never gets old. I play it on RetroArch on my phone all the time even though the touch controls are hard to get used to.
EDIT: and how could I forget that signature Camelot soundtrack?

Handheld games that I think will always be enjoyable:
1 Donkey Kong Country games on GBA - Cheating? Maybe. There's a lot of quality of life enhancements I think like how the screen is oriented, cut scenes, bonus levels, improved levels, extra world in DKC3 (Pacifica) as well as a new soundtrack by David Wise and more stuff. My preferred way through the Country.
2 Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story - I'm a big fan of the Mario and Luigi games but this one has that next level humor with great puzzles and game mechanics.
3 Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - I have replayed this game sooooo many times, it's the long roadtrip game to Thanksgiving at your grandma's house or just a metaphorical trip on your couch.
4 Link's Awakening DX: Another Gameboy classic but the color version with an extra dungeon and pictures. It's maybe more Mario than Zelda and it's my favorite LoZ game. Finally Link can jump.
5 Survival Kids: I had to throw a bit of a curve ball for the last one. This was a Konami game that I don't hear a lot about. Very creative way to play with multiple endings and unique puzzles. Getting washed up on an island left to fend for yourself is actually ... fun.
Anyways I was going to joke about how every game on the Switch is portable but why stop there? Go crazy with it. Rip NES Roms and put them in your Gameboy Everdrive to play on camping trips. Get the Nomad and play Sega Genesis games at the airport. Nab one of those PiiWiis to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a cross country train ride. The world is your oyster!

Not a hand held game, but on the topic of Castlevania, I'd have to say that for me, besides the SNES game which will always be a legendary game, my personal favorite was Lament of Innocence on PS2. That one, man! I could not put that controller down! Every day I was playin' that, for at least a couple hours. That is until I finally finished it. Handhelds were always my favorite. We only had one tv in the living room so video game time was always limited and shared with my siblings. But my Game Boy was mine. I didn't have to worry about a shared tv cause it had it's own screen. It was all mine. Nothing beat laying in bed under the light and getting lost in the world of whatever game I was playing.

A few years ago I discovered "Mole Mania" for the Game Boy (a lesser known game from Shigeru Miyamoto) and I couldn't let it go for...months. It's a super puzzle game whrere you play a mole rescuing his wife and kids from an angry farmer. There are 8 worlds/levels with numerous puzzles in each including even a boss fight!

As a kid, I had a Game Boy, with some of the best games (Metroid 2, Final Fantasy Legend, etc.). I didn't have another handheld until the PS Vita, which I got on launch. I was so excited for the Vita, and the Uncharted game that was available at launch. I still play my Vita a lot. It is disappointing the poor support it got from Sony though.
    Anyway, great video as always!

A Link Between Worlds is an absolute masterpiece. The orchestrated music alone, even the sound effects like the way the dark world echoed were great, this is definitely a game you want some quality headphones in for. Also it gave us Ravio, who is my favourite character in Hyrule Warriors, and just over all I like the character.

      I grew up on LttP.
Worlds was great but I always wanted one in that style but in a different Zelda world.

I love the GBA Fire Emblem games. Playing them on the highest setting Iron Man style (not restarting chapters for any reason) always leads to new experiences. Great vid as always Mr Bird!

This was very soothing. Sega had a master system handheld btw. Back in the 2000s I always wanted an arcade game that I could play on a handheld. The only one that was just like the arcade and fun to play was Final Fight.

Cat trap! Thank you! When I was young I had a bootleg cart that had this on it. I don’t think it was in English for the title, or I forgot, but I could never remember.
Need to buy a physical version.

Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland will always be what I think of when someone says "handheld gaming", my friend and I put so much time into that game when I was younger. I had 100% on the regular story as well as Meta-Knight mode.

I had decided since I was a kid that I didn’t want to do handhelds because I felt like it would take even more time away from enjoying life and the games I have at home are good enough. I tried Mobil gaming for a bit when it became a thing but I eventually came to the same conclusion. It was taking away from other parts of life. My wife and kid do have a super game boy adaptor so I have been trying out some of the classics. Not dissing on handhelds, I firmly believe they work better for many people, just not for me

DK ‘94 and Metroid Zero Mission are easily some of my favorite handheld games! If I had to pick one, though, DK is what I’d go with since it’s just so fun to replay.
Aside from those two, WarioWare Inc., Klonoa Empire of Dreams, and Mr. Driller 2 on GBA are all really great. Recently got all three of these and have been loving every second playing them!

Castlevania Aria of Sorrow is my favorite Castlevania from the GBA. As for other handheld games, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles was the main reason I bought a PSP.
And The Legend of Zelda a Link between worlds from the 3DS is an awesome game.
