Honda V65 Sabre - How to: Oil Change

- Important note: Be aware there is a small drain plug on the bottom of the front cylinder heads. The oil must also be drained from there as well as the oil pan. We're doing on oil change on my 1985 Honda V65 Sabre. These steps are also applicable to the Magna. Honda's V4 engines are an engineering marvel, however they didn't have all the kinks worked out at the time. Oil flow to the heads on 80's Honda's V4 engines was not adequate below 3,000rpm - thus potentially causing damage to the cams. Though liquid cooled, these bikes still run hot which breaks down the oil quicker. So, it is of utmost importance to change your oil often in these machines!
There is an important note about the drain plug on the front cylinder heads in the description box. Please take a moment to read it. Thanks!
Very detailed, but easy to understand process. Great video!
Thank you, that's what I was going for!
The oil dip stick isn't supposed to be screwed in when checking the oil level. Once removed from side of case, pull out and wipe clean. Then drop the dip stick in and without screwing it in pull out and check that the oil level is within the marks. This can be found in section for maintenance on page 2-3. Hope you can find it there. v4musclebike.com/v65mike/V65_Sabre.pdf
Good video...thanks for taking the time. I would add two comments. The manual says to not screw in the dip stick or you will show oil higher than spec. Last comment is that the oil filter is empty so run the engine a few minutes, then check the oil level. Thanks again.
Thank you for the comment. I'll be making an updated video on the oil change for some corrections such as the dip stick not needing fully screwed in. Thanks!
That’s easier than my Honda lol nice job teaching it correctly
Nice video, you helped me choose what filter I am going to use for mine.
Also if you ever find the matching panels for your bike. It seems like yours match my 84 Sabre and I would be interested in buying them.
Thank you! So you have the silver color scheme? If I find matching side panels for my bike I'll remember you and we can work something out!
I believe the manual says to not screw in the dip stick when checking the oil.
I don't have an original owners manual but I do have a reprint. I read through the steps of the oil change and it didn't specify whether to screw in the dip stick or not. Just says to check it afterwards.
@@da_garage383 i have the Honda manual and just checked it to make sure and it does say to not screw the dip stick in to check the proper level. The bike also needs to be on the center stand.
@@da_garage383 Those type of dipsticks are always read unscrewed which gives you the "efficiency" when checking the level
Hi ,I just got a v65 1984 california in Ireland .according to the v65 manual (online ) it says to put the bike on mainstand and dip ( when screwed out ) so dip the stick loose ( and not screwed all the way in ).
Yes, that is correct. I don't have the original manual so I got some off brand reprint and by now I can see that this reprint is trash. It's missing a lot of information. It doesn't mention any of those details.
Hey bud, how often would you recommend changing the Final gear drive oil in the shaft drive? Thanks..
My Clymer manual says to inspect the final drive oil every 8,000 miles (12,000 km) and to change the final drive oil every 24,000 miles (38,000 km)
Bro,you forgott the front cilinder drain plug.
Gr from the Netherlands
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll write a corrective piece in the description box.
Why does yours have a round headlight?
That was installed by the previous owner. I guess he liked the look of a round headlight over the stock rectanagle one.
My 85 V65 Magna has a small drain bolt at the bottom of the front cylinders top end, on the underneath side. Not sure if you have one that also should be drained. It pools a few ounces of oil.
Yes, I do see that bolt there on my engine. I didn't know that's what it was. Good to know - thanks for pointing that out!
What about rotella t6 5w40?
The owners manual recommends 10w - 40, so I went slightly heavier with 15w - 40. I went with that because it's so hot here. I'll go down to the 10w when it cools down. I think 5w - 40 would be fine, but I have no experience with that weight oil in this bike. So, I'm not 100% sure on that.
@@da_garage383 Thank you for your replying back 👍
You forgot to drain the oil from the front cylinder head
A note about this pinned in the comments section.
