Boox has released a color version of their Nova 3 device, simply called "Nova 3 Color" that is running the latest iteration of the E-Ink's Kaleido color panel. This is the first note-taking capable color e-ink device to hit the market, and as such it has a lot of eyes on it. Let's check it out :)

Another great group of videos! I have to say, I'm glad the physical button is there on this one. Since the side swipe gestures are problematic on a small screen, and Kaleido needing light, I find myself using the long press to turn the light on and off regularly. Also, with the refresh issues, it's nice to be able to use the button for back or home and be able to keep a gesture assigned to multitasking.
According to the deep and sincere information provided during the four parts, one can give a deep gratitude without courtesy.

Awesome reviews! Do you have a list of current front runners for these paper e tablets? or what's your favorite all around note taking device so far?
Great stuff as always! I agree with most of what you said. Only thing I disagree on is saying that you might as well use a LCD tablet or phone because of the blue front light. We've had blue front lights on readers for a very long time and it still results in less eye fatigue than looking at an LCD. I can read books for hours on an ereader even with a blue front light. I can't say the same about staring at an LCD.
I personally think reading in poor light is bad no matter what color the front light is, so I only use the front light to balance out my warm lighting that the Kaleido Plus absorbs. Using it like this makes the front light very neutral and the color more accurate.
But yes, if your ambient lighting is too dark, then you don't have a choice but to raise the front light higher which makes everything too blue. For that reason I agree they should have kept the amber light option. It would help a great deal in neutralizing the blue front light in low light settings and would be awesome to go all amber for monochromatic material.
In the end, I think color adds a whole new dimension to reading. I don't mind that it's not vibrant. It looks like color newsprint or real comic book print. The whole thing about ereaders is to replicate paper, so I'm totally fine with this. I've been playing with the optimization settings to handle thee ghosting issue. Not great, but acceptable.
Anyway, I enjoy your very detailed reviews! I bought my first Boox because of your videos. Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you for the guide. I agree with most you said (I've bought one too). Personally Ghosting is not a huge issue for me: I simply use the neo reader and set the refresh rate to 1 which works great. However the darkness of the screen is a huge bummer. I am actually considering to switch to the Nova 3 b/w ...

Thank you for the review. I'm a Nova Pro user. I have been thinking to replace it with Nova 3 Color as Pro is a little slow switching apps sometimes. Your side by side no-backlight comparison makes me want to wait for one or two more generations. Normally, I use my Nova Pro as little as backlight possible. The natural state of Nova 3 Color is a bit too dark.
I have 2 kindle paperwhite of which I mostly use for leisure reading, but lately I've been using them for intensive studying. A colored e-paper device would be very useful in highlighting as I rely on color schemes for my notes. I am contemplating on either buying this or an s6 lite tab. 🤔❓❓❓

The improvement in black and white writing experience was striking. 3.1 is the reason for this change? I think this will be the decision criterion for waiting for the next product line. I'm looking forward to your test about it. If there is an improvement in Nova 3 color that is unrelated to the update, it will definitely be necessary to wait for the next products. It was a super review again. You are definitely doing the best tests on e-ink devices.

Very informative, thank you ! A trial with an app like twilight for bluelight filtering (is it working at all on a front light?) - would have been nice... maybe a user could tell?
i have the max2. my biggest wish would be to have a front light. of course, the lumi came out and fills that gap. but as I only recently bought the max2, I am not going to upgrade so quickly. the trade-in value option is ridiculously low. i still have a kindle dx for the same reason. i cannot get the value back by trading it in. and not many would buy one. so I am thinking of waiting for the next generations of color ereaders. i have a galaxy tab a with s pen. and this works well for what I want to do with that screen size.
Question: is it possible to connect these Boox devices (and other Android devices) via USB C to a Windows PC or Macbook, and either:
* use it as a Wacom tablet, or
* set it up as an external Windows screen, where one can associate, e.g., MS Whiteboard with the tablet and drawn on it? Something similar to, e.g., the "passive screen" Lenovo M14t, which can give pen support to laptops without touch sensitive screen?
* similar for Macbooks: can it be hooked up and give inking possibilities to a Macbook?
If this was possible, that would be a really added feature.

Hi I'm an assistant professor in the UK and looking to change from paper based lab books to e-note takers. My key requirement beyond the note taking and pdf/word annotation are that the notes can be backup/saved into a shared folder, preferably something like Microsoft OneDrive or Sharepoint or the Google equivalent. Please could you give your recommendation for one, preferably one of the larger sizes? I quite like the idea of the Supernote A5 X but without buying the I cant really try them out.
Have you found an ereader yet? Just in case you havent yet, check out the Max Lumi 2. It's the biggest one out there. Best for reading academic papers.

I pulled the trigger on the black and white as well instead of the color. Kudos to this channel for breaking down the NeoReader which is what really sold me on Boox
I got my Nova 3 yesterday, but the seller sent me the color version by mistake. Had the chance to play around, and comparing with the kindle paper white, the nova 3 color resolution is very bad.. it’s like watching old tv screen. And the light has to be turn on almost always, so it’s quite bright and if you turn off the light, it’s too dark to read.. So I sent it back very gladly. Now i have to wait about 5 days to get the right black and white one.
One thing about e readers that are miles better than LCD or OLED screens is its feels and looks more natural to the eye, and much more pleasant and easy on the eye. Colour is the icing on the cake and worth the short comings as the reading experience is far better.
Colour in anything has never matched black and white evrn with Colour. Sometimes pro photography is done in black and white, more sensitivity of camera and better sharper contrast. Evrn in astrophotography black and white is far superior to colour. With colour in anything there are some sacrifices and think the colour in the colour e ink devices alone makes up for the issues.
Sure will over time get better, but will be a long time they will match lcd or oled screens for speed, colours and vibrancy. Think this year and 2022 is the year of colour e ink and will see more. I am amazed kobo, which bought out a touch pad e book reader was not colour. Touch pad devices are the new way things are heading.
I am getting the Onyx 3 colour, due to its not locked like the kindle, yet download the app, can read my kindle ebooks, can download any ebook reader app, so not locked into it like kindle and pretty well everything else.
Think the note taking and running Android make it good buy with colour as a big bonus. I have a kindle and the older ones had terrible ghosting then kindle introduced a refresh for every page which I have on and frankly don't notice it.

Extra question about Nova Colour I have: is it possible to just switch to some kind of "monochrome mode" when I do not have a need for colours? (to "force" it in the UI and the default reader)

Not an official way no, on the Poke 2 Color before the firmware update you could by turning on x-mode, but x-mode was removed on the color devices. X-mode is a mode that was faster than A2 but with more severe ghosting and bad resolution and artifacting
With the addition of color, is the problem with third party apps in regards to native dark mode solved? ie apps that have white text on the nova 3, with the color is that problem fixed?
This was already solved on B&W models as well and can be fixed by turning off the option called "whiten app background" in the app optimization.

Are you sure the amber light would absolutely make no sense?
Monochromatic use wouldn't be affected, right?
I can then speculate that quite a few people would use the amber light - not necesarrily alone, but in combination with the blueish-white one - despite of it messing up the colors. Ambient light might do that to the screen as well, most people won't repalce their light bulbs with neutral light ones for reading color mangas, or do they?
No, i never said that? I kept talking how i miss it and need it, but the technology can't accommodate it at the moment, because it clashes with the rgb strips and the whole approach.
@@MyDeepGuide I do not see why that could be a limitation. If you explained in some previous video, I am ashamed to say I missed it or forgotten. Do you have a link that sheds some light on the why? No pun intended
@@MyDeepGuide the simplified model in my head is that kaleido has an RGBRG... pattern for a filter, beneath which light can then be either fully absorbed or fully reflected or partially reflected by traditional black& white capsules (edited. I initially had written background obstructed by black capsules. But the edit is irrelevant to the main point).
And the lighting layer is on top of all this, and independent from it. I must have gotten some assumption wrong
The great question is, why are we relying on this somewhat problematic E-Ink colour tech that is full of issues when ClearInk came out with a far superior alternative? ClearInk need to stop moping about, get their fingers out of their arses and start hitting the consumer market before E-Ink figures it out.
I'd have to disagree with you when you say about the buttons. It's not a tablet - it's a eReader with note taking option. And for a convenient reading the buttons are essential - they are not a relics. Truth be told, not like this one in the Boox - it's useless indeed. But in this case better at least smth than nothing.
I totally agree about functional buttons on an e-reader, for example like on Kobo Libra H2O, brilliant! But this? Almost completely useless. The only functionality that is has that's nice is to pres and hold to toggle the front light. That's about it.
@@MyDeepGuide The gestures are incredibly fiddly and fail from time to time. Having a button is a guarantee that an input you want to give has positive feedback. I think your point is moot, because a button inherently gives you feedback, which is not the case with a touchscreen.
“Under the right conditions” “limitations” “flawed” keep jumping out in these reviews. I understand companies have to utilize this tech and the problems with it if they want to put out a color device. Not excited to buy it if I have to search for or wait until I’m in the right conditions for it - the color - to be useful.
