Boox has released a color version of their Nova 3 device, simply called "Nova 3 Color" that is running the latest iteration of the E-Ink's Kaleido color panel. This is the first note-taking capable color e-ink device to hit the market, and as such it has a lot of eyes on it. Let's check it out :)

Now THAT is a proper review. Thank you! Your competitors only do infomercials.
Thank you :)
+1
Best tech review I saw in the last twenty years, let alone regarding ereaders. And still I have two parts to see
Seems to me like the fundamental problem with color e-ink today is that the color is done with an additive RGB model, which, when you combine it with a reflective color technology like e-ink, means the white gets even grayer than it is in monochrome e-ink. What these devices really need in anything other than brilliant light is better contrast, and this isn't helping.
It'd be wonderful if someone figured out how to layer switchable CMYK pigments to make this work more like color printing on paper, but I admit I can't figure out how that would work...
Best review I've seen in a long time.
Very impressed by the depth of details covered, Thank you!!!
You seem to be the only one talking about the pertinent differences in e ink devices vs regular tablets. Either there are glowing reviews for all of the "features" of said e reader (bluetooth, wifi, video streaming???), or they are blasted because they're not a traditional tablet.
Thanks for covering the things people want to know. Have a like/sub!
Wow, Voya! Thanks ! I was checking your channel daily to see when this review will be ready!!! Big hugs
And suddenly we have gotten 3 deep parts. :)
Since your English is so outstanding, I hope you won't take it amiss if I offer one observation.
After starting a clause with "Only", you have to use the modal verb _do_ (or _will_ or _can_ ) after the adverbial expression, so:
"Only in the morning *do* I power up the device ..."
"Only if you use it intensely *do/will* you have problems with ..."
As always I'm really thrilled to get such an in-depth review, thanks a lot!
I have to say I've come to be quite an enthousiast about those technologies but I still havn't got the crush to actually buy and use one because of the limitations from the communication departments of pretty much every platform there is on the market : somehow I always get the feeling I'm not told everything there is to know about them!
So, having so much details is just great and it helps a lot to assess whether or not it's time to try :-)
@Etienne Safa - the most open are those running on Android 10 - there should be no trouble uploading books etc from pretty much any platform - I can get my Kindle books, my Google books etc on my Nova 3 no trouble at all - and i can USB it to my PC and download anything else - just avoid Amazon products - lol!!
Thanks for this very informative video. Great work.
Thanks a lot for this review!! It helped me clarify my choice, I'll go for the Note Air2 for a better image quality ☺️
Thanks for the microscopic views, I've been wondering how the colour technology worked.
Yes !! this is the review I'been waiting for !!!
I haven't seen yet, but I'd love to see the difference with firmware 3.1
Very detail and useful info that others doesn't really covered.. TQ
Great work!!! 👍🏻
I just found out that long pressing the "Homebutton" works as a switch for the screenlight. I also gave feedback to Onyx to implement mapping this button to different functions (such as screen refresh ...)
Great review, thank you! I bought it and my extra-short review is: it's absolutely inusable. At home I need the backlight full on, in normal-mode I need to fully refresh every single new page, and all this makes the battery last for 6/7 hrs. At this price, I can't even understand how they could sell more than a hundred of units...
Could you please elaborate on your usage? Are you using it purely for reading? I am interested in the model so appreciate your personal experience with it.
@@TimKapow hi. I bought it mainly to read ebooks and comics. I read that they worked improving the anti-ghosting, but I think the problem is that the technology used makes the screen a lot dark so backlight need to be used quite always. Anyways, now I returned it so I don't know if now it's more usable.
@@darkmage1975 thank you for the swift response!
Hi, thank you for your high-quality review. Just to clarify, when you mention at 13:40 that the darkness isn't much of an issue, do you mean that under sufficient lighting you don't see the bluish tinge when using the device with no frontlight? Is it then equivalent to the contrast on the non-color model or do you see the color layer no matter what?
No, it can never match the contrast and whiteness of the monochromatic models, and the greenish gray tint is the actual passive color layer and the reason why I dislike the Kaleido approach. There are examples in the Screen section where i show both in same lighting conditions, without a front light.
Thanks for the great review. The use of blue light only for the front light is a dealbreaker for me. I need to able to read in dim conditions.
This is an excellent product review! I only discovered the Nova 3 Color a few minutes before viewing this "part 1" video, and you have given me a lot to think about.
I feel like I understand the limitations of current color e-ink panels better than I did before. I need to think hard about whether I want to spend extra compared to grayscale e-ink, for a color display that has inferior contrast when viewing b&w or grayscale content. By the time I make a decision, the new new version of the panel you reference in the review might be already in the market. :^)
Thanks!
Yess
For a medical student intending to study books spanning over a thousand pages using this device it is much more convenient to highlight the text than to underline it . Is there such option and can it be done in several colors as well ?
Thanks for your reviews! Very reliable, thorough, lucid and impartial. Regarding battery longevity over the life of Boox devices, I've heard their products tend to suffer from serious reliability issues (swollen battery, performance degradation after 1 he, etc). Any thoughts on this?
Thanks :) that was true of their older models and in almost each instance, after digging a little bit deeper each "I did nothing abnormal" would turn into a case that would kill pretty much any battery. For example, old Max, user would keep it continuously plugged in into a rapid charger while using it as a screen (rapid discharge and charge at the same time for months), or rapid charging while keeping the device or n direct sunlight time after time after time.
I am absolutely certain that there have to be cases where a user would get a unit with a defective battery, but generally speaking, whenever i dug a little bit deeper into those stories, there was more behind the circumstances under which a battery failed.
Newer models have a much better system to protect the battery from such abuse, but then again, i don't abuse my devices, so i don't have any issues :)
@@MyDeepGuide just what I needed to hear. Thanks again! I've put in an order and it should arrive at the end of this week.
I've just begun researching e-readers since last week and was thinking of waiting till Kaleido 3 gets released this summer, but that would mean waiting till the end of the year for market-ready products and I couldn't wait since I plan on reading a lot this year!
Nice review Mr. Voya, as usual..no dilution there.
Frankly, we don't need color e-ink readers, where we hv better and more efficient color display devices, including note taking /drawing features. Non colored E-reader + note taking devices are to be made with more capabilities especially with note taking abilities offered by few apps like notability, one-note etc..brought to e-ink.
My Lenovo Yoga book C930 (which I picked up as open box at Best Buy for $550.00 ) is a stellar device to own and use. It's highly underrated device....but still my personal favorite gadget so far.
For me, blue light is less about the harm but more about the annoyance of the tint. Having both blue and amber front light means I can adjust the white balance and make it more paperlike. The Bigme B1 10" Kaleido Plus colour display have amber front light. It's a shame the Nova3 doesn't have it.
Hello, I just discovered your work! These are exactly the types of reviews I'm looking for. Looking forward to making an e-ink device purchase some time this year, that I'm hoping will last me at least five years. There is one aspect that I'd like to see you incorportate into your reviews: manufacturing ethics....both environmental and labour rights. Is this something you would consider adding to your content?
Thank you for watching :)
No, i dont think so, because i don't have a way of independently verifying and confirming any information that i would get. All of it would be, at best from a third hand source, which is simply too unreliable to take seriously. This kind of work needs to be done by an international body of experts and their findings should then be incorporated into international laws and regulations regarding such a thing.
Basically, I'm not interested in anything i can't test or verify myself.
For drama spreading, pitch-forking, and blind unfounded speculation i think that we have plenty of sources already. No need to add to the mess ;)
I think I'm going to wait for an even newer version of the Kaleido. So did you test the slowest setting for the screen update? Did you still experience ghosting?
Most of what is shown is in the Normal (slowest, highest quality) setting.
Thanks for the effort, may I ask you if I can edit a google doc document with the pen? Thank you
Was wondering if there was anything like this tablet (android based) that has a micro sd card slot?
a question about the blue light, it comes from the led right? so hits the screen from the plastic cover to the the glass screen, and not as tablet lcd that are retroilluminated and strike directly the eyes with the blue light, so I guess although harmful, the blue light is much less fatiguing for the eyes. Am I right? Anyway what a shame we have only 20 GB otherwise I had bought.
With not rendered PDF and magazines, is not too much. I collect digital books and have more than 50 gb, imagine adding pdf guides and magazines
wow! I didn't know they had developed colour eInk, awesome!
Great video!! but personally I love the button on my nova 3, one can always turn the device up side down
Or maybe have an option to turn the button off. That would be a better and more complete option.
@@MyDeepGuide yes, that would give the best of both worlds!
Anyway, blue light is not harmful to the eyes, it can simply screw up the circadian cycle. Two very different things
And reduce the rate of blinking which dries the eyes out, which is most definitely harmful.
It’s not harmful but can cause eye “exhaustion”. It’s something I suffer from at night, stopping me from using my laptop for any purpose at night.
To be honest i used ipad for long time and i really cant use it anymorebecause eye restrain syndrome.
In any case i talked to an ophthalmologist and it seems that in the last few years there is a greater vision decline in the population, probably due to a prolonged use of LCD screens. Studies have been performed with conflicting results and there may be an increase in the incidence of some eye diseases (such as macular degeneration).
The point is that more studies are needed to make sure that direct blue light (in case of prolonged use) can or cant damage the eyes. It should also be considered that all subjects can react differently and have a different tolerance.
I think more studies are needed but a possible correlation between prolonged exposure to blue light and eye damage is possible.
Same here, with Max 3, I can read and take notes without “eyestrain”.
Blue light is the leading cause for eye tissue damage due to dry eye... there's no cure for this disease so it's better to avoid it completely....no fucking brands like the Samsung or lg mention about the danger of this hazardous light but still keep producing screens after knowing it's danger... criminals in disguise
honestly using an a7cc with kaleido2 it's not that bad with no frontlight. Still need a better color tech (maybe spectra) but for someone that really need color, it's better than using a normal phone.
So when it’s displaying mixed color and black/white/gray content (say a picture with a caption), is the black/white/gray portion (say the caption but not the picture) in 300 dpi or 100 dpi?
It's 300 if it's pure black content.
Are you expecting a 10 inch boox device with color note taking announced anywhere this year? Especially a note air color would be great but I am unsure whether I should wait or go for either the larger bw screen of the air or the smaller color screen of the boox nova 3 color.
I honestly don't know, but I do know that E-Ink has produced 10.3" color panels, so i wouldn't be surprised at all, and I am half expecting it either from Boox or from someone else to launch color devices by the end of the year.
@@MyDeepGuide thanks! But the underlying technology will be the same so I'll have to live with ghosting, washed out colors + grayish background, the need for front lights... Tough choice tbh 😊. I think I am afraid from conversions of color pdf's to bw (scientific articles) and the low impact of taking notes in different grayscales (as replacement to colors). Will need some more nights of thought on this.
Boox note air still a popular device for yourself?
If the technology used cyan, magenta, yellow and black particles instead of the black and white, it would actually be subtractive color space.
This would give strong clear color and not be dim.
No rgb layer needed.
Its fundamental reflective color physics that the prinit ing industry HS been using for over 100 years.
The resolution would be lower But the color gambit would jump to over 20,000 colors and 16 grayscale levels.
Yupps, hence my comment that the technological approach for this is all wrong. Untill we have color cells this is, at best, a band aid cash grab.
one of your comments deserves further exploration... this idea that in low lighting conditions, you say one must turn up the front light, and that this increases energy consumption and washes out the color. is this a big issue? you mention it, but is it for sure definitely a deal-breaker? is it very bad?
That is a very subjective consideration, it is a deal breaker for some, for others it's not. This is why I offered a lot of footage and direct comparison with a monochromatic E-Ink screen, to have a point of reference.
If the note air had colour I'd buy that but I'm gonna buy this for now for use at work and college, if I was just note taking at college I'd get the note air but I need to draw diagrams in colour
Could I say Nova 3 color and Quirklogic Papyr have the same writing speed 42 ms?
Is the reMarkable 2 still 27 ms?
Yes, those two are very close, at 42ms :) I have re-ran the tests on several devices after their respective updates and it will be in an upcoming video :)
@@MyDeepGuide Thank you, Mr. Voja!
I have had a second one with bright spots on the screen, my first had bright spots, the replaced it, the second is worse
Hm... I think I would have preferred the choice to have warm light, as for black and white content it's not a problem (?) ... what happens, if you apply an app keeping the blue light out? Maybe strange colours? And another option would be to stick an little light to it, like on the early e books? Cold light - no way...
Not for sale in the US at all. Boox web site links to various other products but won't sell this here, at least not yet.
4:12 I have to say that this price tag is pretty dank!
Nice review. So 50 hours of reading with 0% front light. What is the number of hours with the Note Air model?
I don't remember, but you can check on my indepth review of the Note Air in the Battery section :)
@@MyDeepGuide Thanks: 75h with everything turned off; ca. 10h with everything turned on.
I'm curious about the TCL NXTPage -- I've seen somewhere that it will give (slightly more?) than a full day of use. Depends of course on how one uses it.
Is there a way that you could show us a 1-minute video of the device playing a RUclips clip of a common non-animated American TV commercial or Tom Cruise movie that most users would recognize? This would help us compare the variety of shades on a standard phone's screen to thr screen of the Air C. Thanks so much~
Unfortunately no, as I no longer have the device, since it was a review loan device.
Mine came with an uninstallable Trojan embedded in the calculator app.
Does this device support 3G conncectivity or 4G?
No.
the first note-taking color eink is not nova 3 color. it's bigme B1 PRO color.
First 7.8", and first that people will actually buy, since B1 Pro is $1200, which is just silly.
@@MyDeepGuide You are totally right, particularly the price point.
isn't Bigme chinese only?
@@janicenunn8525 Gradually, the company provides support to other languages.
@@mohammedsaid7763 great! I was interested from what little I saw of it, I will keep an eye out!
It's not ready yet.
Uuuuhm, I have this device. I love the hardware, it is fast, snappy, I love the color e-ink, I think 4096 colors is enough, I think image quality is acceptable/good.
However, dimness of the screen + usage of white frontlight makes it a deal breaker for me. I would just go buy a LCD/AMOLED tablet.
Too bad. I wish they didnt include the wacom layer + glass screen on this device. An e-reader should be readable without frontlight indoors in medium lighting conditions.
I also think they did a good job with ghosting. And the open OS and software in general is good.
Hey! Can u divide the screen in two with the color 7.8 inch? while reading, you can do that in classic Onyx Nova 7.8''. And the last please... can I take notes on PDFs or EPUBs like using a pen? I mean writing on them without problem with other color rather than black like using a yellow highlighter o taking notes with red pen, but in the same ''paper'' of the article.
it very expensive e-reader thats for sure
It is a good review alright but things are repeated over and over again. The same in-depth review should take only half the time of this one I think
무슨 말을 하는지 알고 싶다.
영어를 배웠어야 했다.
thanks for ur helpful review. Does it support Persian(Farsi) language? I mean is it possible to read books in Persian(Farsi) language by? @MyDeepGuide
