I was up in the air about buying a Remarkable, and now I am down on the ground(?) about it. 100% decided I am buying it. Run the Joules, I am subscribing to your list just because this was so damn entertaining and informative. Hell, I may watch this again.
@@TheFaro2011 I'm good at taking notes but don't always read them back. It's great not having to flick through pages of a notepad to find out what I recorded in a meeting a month ago. I like to have a digital record of notes that I can read anywhere. I can also leave my RM at home and review my notes on the app. At the same time, I recall info (and think better) when notes are written in my own hand.
The price point is what had me debating too. The fact that it ONLY allows notes/drawings to be stored, can organize them, smaller than a single notebook, has 8Gb total storage (it's about 6.57 after OS/updates), and from this video, learn that it will last more than two years.. I have precisely zero regrets. It also has ways to get data off it if necessary. I'm a note taker. I filled one notebook for every class in college. I also kept an active journal, AND I took side notes for a job I had. In addition, I also kept notes for my personal life with all sorts of stuff. All at the same time. Keeping the notes and actually being able to reference them was a pain to say the least. I ended up recycling/burning all of the stuff except my journals later. I can put files into folders, keep things organized and separate, switch notes when necessary, add and remove when required, and keep my notes organized with basic front-end organization with the remarkable. In less than 48 hours of having it, I created and modified 0.39Gb worth of data. All for a size that's smaller than a sheet of paper and thinner than a legal pad. This isn't for everyone, but heavy note taker's that need/want to reference them easier, need a focus point without distraction, or something a little easier to carry around and literally everywhere with you (I dont feel awkward carrying it in the slightest) for whenever an idea strikes you - this should at least be on a "look at" list. It's also nice for neurodiverse individuals looking to remove distractions from thought processes since it's function is precise. If it isn't something you see that's beneficial and could help you stay organized, that is fine, but this is a product that is very useful to some people.

I’ve got one. I had notepads everywhere. Loads of them. One for study, one for general stuff, a diary etc. the remarkable does everything you need if you are replacing writing on paper. It’s absolutely perfect.
As a trucker, I find my device to be a lifesaver for managing the tedious paperwork trail that comes with the job. Additionally, as someone with autism, it serves as a cloud for my mind, allowing me to easily access all of my ebooks and utilize memory techniques such as mnemonics, the major system, and memory palaces. This not only saves me time but also makes it easier on my cognitive load. Overall, I love my device for its ability to simplify my life in so many ways.
You mean I could ditch my 99 notebooks I have and I never remember which notebook IT is written in! Id have so much less clutter if I got rid of notebooks, note paper and 1000 pens!! I'm obsessed with notebooks, note pads and pens, markers, highlighters. And I crave declutter. Hmmm this could help? Makes me nervous to think of getting rid of all my notebooks. Yeah. I got mine at the start of the year. Really changed the way I journal and plan my time. I use the Alastair method for planning and follow up my weeks. I usually convert my hand written text and send it into Journey which is my journaling platform. A bit old school in a good way. There isn't a lot of tech that puts a smile on my face. This one does. And thank you for your video. I learned that if I number the folders I get them arranged in the way I want. Thanks again! "Ha en bra dag", as we say here in Sweden! 🙂
My wife and I print recipes to PDF and load to the Remarkable. We then mark up as we adjust and add notes. It is really helpful as I experiment with cheese making recipes.
The remarkable is worth every penny. Btw, currently starts at $$298 USD. I have been using since the first version came out. Increased my productivity, allows spontaneous drawing and focus. It is a huge plus that it doesn’t surf the web etc. it’s for writing and drawing period. Mountains of legal pads are now all in this device.
Yes I also used remarkable 1 and I buy it for $450 with pen and case 5 years ago and this is probably the best purchase I've done so far... Everybody asked me why buying a tablet without multimedia function and apps, I can always answer that "I already had my phone and laptop for that purpose"... And the pen tip is actually pretty cheap, as for now it cost only $34 and you'll got 25 spare tips... Of course it's not as smooth as ipad or samsung tablet, but at least it didn't cost me any anxiety on battery life and software update... I think everyone should give it a try...

Remarkable 2 really is the best. Also the fact that you have access to all the files on the remarkable and on the computer and on your phone with the cloud sync is a game-changer. Having the ability to have many folder, pds, notebooks and more in one place helps so much with multiproject management. You can also do sub-folders as well. So easy to move between folders. Or make duplicates. Also remember you can activate a security code on your remarkable, like a screen lock you would have on your phone. A 4-digit code you choose, to give you some peace of mind that no one else can access your information. :) Great review.

Got my recently. For someone who loves to draw/doodle/write, practice doing this, and hate having to start over/bring and waste paper, this thing is beyond perfect.
My Man. I've been following The Loam Ranger (TLR)for a coule years and have been meaning to come over here for awhile, as you occasionally mention it "over there." Long story short, I am 1 year into concussion recovery and doing a lot of really hard work on my concussed ADD/executive functionally challenged brain. I am a note taker and was looking into (for like the 4th time) a writing tablet when I saw this review. THANK YOU. I'm in. This was exactly what I have been looking for for reviews on these darn things. You answered ALL my questions and the clincher is this: I already trust you implicitly. Your Work on TLR is honest, thorough, and so freaking well produced... (and to be honest, just like your desk... clean lines, free of distractions, and very efficient in an artful way).... and that's talking about BIKES (and trails and travel etc etc). Just went out and bought a remarkable. Watched lots of reviews, this one really helped finalise the decision. One major thing for me was distractions. I find myself in a waze when I use my phone or laptop. I thought about an iPad with paper feel screen protector, but I would just suffer from the same problem. This will be a useful device for university and work. No more scraps of paper in my bag before a lecture trying to find a place to write. Simple and elegant, but does the job.
I find the Remarkable 2 is definitely a useful tablet without the distractions. It is premium and a step up from the original Remarkable tablet which I own as well.
Serious question here, you say the Remarkable 2 is better than the original - do the makers not update the operating system? I mean did they need to make a new device in order to have these improvements? I don't want to buy the Remarkable 2 and then a few weeks later the Remarkable 3 is released.
@@kkhorste I was referring to the deign and appearance of both the Remarkable 2. The software has been updated in terms of features and usability. The original Remarkable had multiple software updates during the time I used it.Aesthetically, the Remarkable 2 is premium and professional. No, the company did not have to release a new product from a software perspective.
Thank you for this video. I did not buy Remarkable, but I started my morning pages. It was a good tip. There are others too to recommended it. But it was only after your video I started it and with the rules you mentioned: No negative self talk and commit to action. This "commit to action" was very helpful for me. It woke me really up to make effort. Morning pages gives a good practice platform with it. "Commit to action" affects clear decisions. Thank you.

I bought the remarkable based off of this video (and some side reviews) and I am hugely happy to have done that. Super great recommendation and in-love with the thing. It makes writing and sketching and organising myself fun and exciting ... like I look forward to it :)
I bought my reMarkable before it was even finished, and have not regretted it (still use the first model). I also have a racing mind and write "morning pages" all day long, as needed; it calms me down and helps me regain focus. Also it works for epub and pdf, which I use a lot in both work an leisure. I like its limitations, why do we need every device to do it all? No one thinks a mobile phone and a computer is redundency, they are both good for different things. And the reMarkable has its place in the gadget park.
Great review! I use mine *exactly* the same way and 2 years later still use it every day. It's amazing for organising tasks, projects, life etc. Love it's simplicity, how it starts in 1 second and just pick up and write.
I've been a remarkable user since the beginning. Was grandfathered in from the old users. I've continuously upgraded through the years. That being said I did purchase the typefolio. My only gripe with all of this is that you cannot have PDF templates and be able to type on them. It's really inconvenient purchasing all these templates and can only be handwritten on. The most positive outcome that I've experienced with having this is that I can keep wiring schematics on here and make changes to them as I need to reroute power and whatnot. Having everything in an organized fashion at a glance is just perfect without computer navigating to get in the way.
Yes!! I didnt mention in my comment that I have ADD. So its notes notes notes. I clear my brain by writing notes. Notes that I lose and don't remember which notebook I wrote it in. Lol...its exhausting!😂

Love my reMarakable 2! I inquired a couple of years ago about becoming an affiliate marketer for this product. I did not get approved. I used to buy journals. Then they get full and you don't have them handy when you need them. I have all the value of a paper system ( including the feel) with out any of the down sides. I draw a lot in my Morning Pages and my planner and my journal and this device feels like the best paper. All the other tablets I have tried are too smooth or the emulation is a little off. Every other device distracts me with extra features and then runs out of battery. I want to reaffirm every thing you said. I will add that it is probably not for everyone but for those of us who like things to be just right, and we know who we are, this is the perfect tool. Thank you for saying it so well.
Oh wow! Your video was like a guiding light in my e-ink tablet quest. I've been binge-watching reviews like a true e-ink tablet aficionado, and I was initially leaning towards the Supernote. But your video, my friend, struck a chord with me! That bit about the thinner tablet being easier to write on was a total game-changer - it's not something I had even considered. Thanks to your entertaining and informative review, the scales have tipped in favor of the reMarkable 2. Kudos for helping me make up my mind!
I can say the the thickness of the Supernote is definitely not a big deal. Most of my notebooks have been thicker than the Supernote (before I switched to it) and it just feels normal, like a thin-ish notebook. The feeling of the ceramic nib is simply un-matched and I wouldn't switch my A5X (and A6X) for anything else.

I just finally took the jump and bought one. I do Tech Support, and I am constantly taking little notes or people hand me little notes. I could never keep track of my work. This is light and simple. I now don't have piles of sticky notes all over my desk. I have a Surface Pro, but it's too big. I just needed a notebook that I could always have around but also keep my notes orgainzed. I love it.
Years ago, I’ve went down this rabbit hole as well and went with a Boox e-reader. Similar concept, but you get a larger screen in exchange for a worse writing experience. I prefer the ability to comfortably read large PDFs, while the note-taking workflow doesn’t seem completely solved. You write down stuff and sync it across devices, but the content is not responsive (look at how the script you wrote doesn’t fit well in your phone). So you need OCR, I guess, but I don’t think we’re there yet.
Down the rabbit hole is right. I became obsessed with e-ink note-taking and which one I should try. Finally went with the smaller Supernote and quickly realized my handwriting is way too slow and way too sloppy to make this a viable alternative. I admire the workflow people come up with for these, I just know it ain't for me...
This is video sold me. I'm starting grad school in the fall and my biggest problem in undergrad was misplacing my notebooks for class. Or I'd grab my maths book for my history class so by the end of the week my class notes would be in scattered across like four different composition notebooks. And I got sooooo distracted trying to take notes on my laptop

Im amazed the company that makes this tablet hasn't added an e-book and a subscription service for news/articles. It seems like a simple way to add ease of use and value to the product that may be a good way to get people on the fence to decide to buy the tablet. If they can release a color version I might be enticed to purchasing one someday.

This is very interesting. I really love e-ink stuff. I recently started using the Paper app on iPad and it reminds me a lot of this kind of workflow. It's very limited and those constraints help a lot! Too many things these days have lots of features, and I don't want to waste time tinkering. I do wish there was a colour e-ink version of the Paper app as a tablet, that would be ideal... This is a very well made video!!
You may find the Boox Tab Ultra C worth a look. Though it is more feature rich, it does really get out of the way once you’ve got a workflow established after the learning curve.
After having watched several paper tablet reviews across youtube, you convinced me to finally buy the ReMarkable 2. I'm assuming you've gotten it at this point. How is it working as far as mind-maps go? I feel like the nature of it not expanding horizontally forever and only expanding vertically is very restrictive for mind-maps. What's your experience?

I loved the RM1, I used that thing for meeting and taking it out to engineering sites to sketch diagrams, make notes or read drawings. I was sent a newsletter for the RM2+Type Folio and got it for 650. Videos like this helped make me justify it even though I already had positive experiences with the RM1.

I just want to say thank you. I have been looking through all of the review videos for this tablet and other e-write paper tablets and this was the most honest and useful review I have found. I enjoyed the layout of the video, the style of transitions and scenery. I just want a simple notebook style tablet to take notes, organize my writing, function as a planner, sync, and not much more than that. This looks like it's going to be exactly that and someone who appreciates something well built, sleek, and tactile is also appreciated. I think this has convinced me the remarkable may be the tablet for me. I also appreciated the insight on your daily use and a few suggestions as to how to better organize your life, your day, and improve one's daily mental health. Would you suggest spending the money on the folio and the pen? Have you tried any other third-party folios? Again, thank you so much for the work you put in to this video. It's finally what I was looking for.
Might be too late but the remarkable folio's aren't worth the money - they're very nice, but you can get decent third party ones much, much cheaper. I liked the better pen but you can also get cheaper alternatives with the eraser function (like the pencil he shows)
I’d say yes, I cringed a little at the price but if you’re a textile/ tactile oriented person I highly recommend, it’s a beautiful investment, I’m glad I got the black en that erases and the black book folio. The texture is unmatched

I'm not sure why I'm watching this as I have one, broke it and just bought a replacement because I love it so much but... I love how you mentioned how thin is what being better for how it feels, that is 100% spot on but I didn't think about it until now. I originally bought mine fore notes in college, as I had a iPad but found myself getting distracted by other apps and not liking the feel of using a stylus on it. I have since (before it broke) used mine every day, I love notebooks and keeping stuff written down but this lets me do it all in one small form factor. My plan is to eventually try the new keyboard as well. great video!

I initially talked about it, but then realized that everything I personally do with the tablet doesn’t require the paid subscription. Remarkable should definitely makes things more clear as to what the paid Vs non-paid experience is like with the tablet. I started reading a lot of articles for a course am doing and I was really bothered with the strain long periods of reading put on my eyes. I also started journaling, tracking my expenses, tracking my habits, writing ideas for a RUclips channel I want to start... I now have a bunch of notebooks. So this was something that immediately grabbed my attention. I got a great deal of the secondary market so I jumped on it. It's great.
The reason I'm looking at getting one of these. I have a pretty low end spectrum ADHD (diagnosed, not just claiming), and one thing that is a huge issue is I end up with 10 notebooks with 2 or 3 pages filled out in the beginning. It's really annoying. This is probably something I might end up buying today, and this is a really really great video. You almost had me sold in like the first 2 minutes.

Thanks! That mic is actually an old AKG C1000S. It's not really intended to be a vocal mic, but I agree, somehow it does a good job with voice work. I'm not sure if Remarkable will be releasing a new device soon. They spent so many years developing the current one and seems to be going with a model that is based on creating new accessories and subscription models. We'll see though!
Thanks for a great review! In part as a result of your unbiased evaluation of this product, I purchased the new ReMarkable Paper Pro. I’m a big believer in writing and ideating with pen and paper, but the result was an ever multiplying collection of notebooks, littering my office and a complete inability to locate older ideas with any degree of alacrity. The ReMarkable Paper Pro has changed that. I also want to emphasize a point that you make, which is that this piece of tech does far less than almost in the other piece of tech that I own - but that’s the point. Because it is scoped so narrowly, I can focus.
I do enjoy my remarkable 1. Not sure if it's worth spending 600+ dollars (plus all the accessories) CDN to upgrade. A bit disheartened to hear there's a monthly fee for certain features. I think the best feature you mentioned was the built in pen eraser. Does the premium pen work on the R1? Thanks for the video from a fellow Canuck. :)
Hey. Early adopter and owner of both rM1 and rM2. With regards to the "pro pen", you have to ask yourself "do I really need the pencil eraser on the back?". You may be thinking, as I was, "oh I'm sure I'm going to start using the eraser if I just had it. It's clearly superior", but that's not good enough. Do you _really_ use the cheap double pencil eraser, and not a dedicated eraser, when you write on paper? Are you accustomed, perhaps even obsessively so, to the compulsion of turning around your pen mid-sentence to correct every few mistakes, only to turn the pen back around to resume note? Because I wasn't. And if you aren't already, I doubt that's going to change. Before epaper, I was a heavy physical note taker (although I eventually turned to fountain pens and rejected erasers altogether), filling a notebook or two every month. I found the feeling of writing on a screen (any screen really, neither rM or other epaper being any exception) being so far removed from the pressure and friction I had required that I spent years making 10x more mistakes while retraining my hand to the unforgivingly slippery scratch surface of an engineered faux plastic/glass pad with awkward tracking. I can't seem to repeat this often enough, but while I respect rM and other epaper tablet manufacturers for their commitment to bridge the gap between the physical and digital, the reality is this: From the outer extremes of abstract, virtual written expression being 0% to tactile, analogue pigment on solid matter being 100%, even with the amazing technological breakthroughs of epaper and software, we're only 75% there at best. And we may never get further than 90% in our lifetimes. The gap will never really disappear. With this reality check in place, I urge you to reconsider what it means to "replace" paper. And instead converge on a way to satisfactorily "integrate" digital tools into your current preference for analogue equivalents. What this means, in practice, is to learn from the most successful approaches in each niche (the digitalists and the nostalgists, respectively). And looking at what highly successful digital pen artists (and writers for that matter) do, there is no question the "Undo" button is the centerpiece of their workflow (irrespective of word processor or drawing software). (Others being such things as single key tool swap physical keyboard commands, unfortunately not present in consumer tablets such as rM.) I had to learn through trial and error that the "eraser" I thought I needed didn't serve the same purpose in digital as it did in physical. Unsurprisingly, it took more time to select an eraser tool, painstakingly trace the area with the disproportionate brush size and tracking, wait for the software to render the process so I can glance over the vector image and confirm my touchup before ultimately retoggling the pen tool, than it took to hit "Undo", and return the software to a previous state, already saved in memory, without the toggle. Naturally, I know there are benefits to and use cases for erasers. For recreational writers and artists perhaps that approach is preferred. But once you're writing for a job, and the writing itself is slow and tedious, you'll start asking yourself why you chose the slightly more uncomfortable device for the job, when you could've just had a stack of disposable stickies or the back of an envelope and a ballpoint. "Undo" is a better tool, albeit digital magic. Please consider using it. With that out of the way, there are really only four reasons to acquire the rM2 over the original: 1. More responsive hardware. 2. Better contrast. 3. USB Type-C future-proofed 4. Ambidexterity for lefties. On the contrary, there are still many benefits of the original rM: 1. Better feeling surface. 2. Buttons. 3. Servicability. 4. USB _with data_ (no pogo pins) meaning you can connect a 3rd party keyboard. 5. Lightweight. While rM2's slim form factor and smaller footprint are nice, unfortunately it's a luxury few people actually benefit from after attaching their magnetic folio. And once you're learned to comfortably write on a digital surface, the few millimeters off the table won't bother you anymore either. The depth becomes a fact of life easily compensated for with pocket accessories (note, handkerchief, wallet, phone). Not to mention there are cases for most epaper tablets that add incline for comfort. See, my $20 rM1 case is considerably more useful and comfortable than my now $169 magnetic leather rM2 folio ever was. And the battery, at least in my experience, is only slightly improved in rM2 over rM1. They're both so exceptionally long lasting compared to existing screen technologies, and you're going to want to charge them every day or so anyway for peace of mind if you use them full-time, so it's really not something you should think about. I still prefer to use rM2 for the aforementioned reasons. The contrast and responsiveness simply make it more comfortable for reading and _looking at the screen_, which, arguably, is still the main purpose and advantage of epaper.
I have been toying with the idea of purchasing the remarkable2, but could not find a review that really convinced me that this was a good purchase. A friend highly recommended it and then I came across your video which also solidified my decision to make the purchase. Thank you for explaining it so clearly.

Great video. You have hit the nail on the head. I have the daily battle of trying to justify to people why I have spent so much on e-ink tablets when they do nothing! I must say your one frustration was the same for me…no books… but with its latest update I think the Kindle Scribe has finally hit the sweet spot.

I absolutely love Remarkable 2 tablet. With years writing in scattered notes and papers, I found a place to jott everything down. Its really remarkable!! And a nice video showcasing how remarkable it is.
Thank you. The Remarkable caught my eye a while ago, but I never found a compelling case for buying one. Especially after I looked up the price. I'm still in no hurry to buy one, but now I know why and how it could be useful. I have a love/hate relationship with paper. I always wrote terribly (my mom taught me typing when I was in 6th grade in the hopes that I could create legible schoolwork). But through decades of programming, I have filled endless pads with my scribbled text and diagrams. It was the only way I could organize my thoughts. But I hated the crossing out, the inability to shift text and my reluctance to copy over to new pages. Sure I type notes into the computer but as you said, using the hands is qualitatively different than typing.
Just dropping in to say this is hands down the best remarkable video I’ve found on RUclips! I ordered one in the end! I’m a big note taker and this will much simplify things. And iPad was a no no for me, I just can’t write on glass !

The battery life is EVERYTHING. Try taking your Ipad to sit in the the park, or on a camping trip, so you can doodle or journal. It's impossible to relax because the battery is drip-drip-dripping. I've picked up my Remarkable after months of not using it, and it is near-fully charged and ready to go. By the way, what model is your "personal camera"? A Leica, maybe? I want to get rid of all my SLRs and lenses and get something basic.
100%. I definitely appreciate having such long battery life. As for the camera, that’s a Leica M2. Not having a built-in meter is a bit tricky sometimes, but boy do I love the fact that there’s essentially nothing that can break on it!
This is very much gets at the information that I've been searching for--the real, down-to-earth daily use that will help me answer the question of whether it's worth spending money on something I know I can do on paper.

It doesn’t matter how much something can do, it matters what you’ll actually use. Personally I would like a few more features, maybe eBooks and OCR, but the Remarkable 2 does seems perfect in a way because of what it can’t do.

However, I'm in the market for a more sophisticated device to replace all of my notebooks. I love to write things down, but I'm compiling items in my small space. I really like the device's design, and now there is a folio feature for typing. I am excited to make a purchase soon.
If you have a corporate job, the remarkable is an absolute saviour. You never lose your notes, you never have to mess about with note pads, you can email the notes straight to yourself, and you are exempt from pen thieves.
I'm not even going to buy the Remarkable. Yet. But this was the best review I've seen online for any product. I learned a lot about the product, but I learned more about mindfulness and organization. And getting just the right amount of denim.

@@TheFaro2011 I'm good at taking notes but don't always read them back. It's great not having to flick through pages of a notepad to find out what I recorded in a meeting a month ago. I like to have a digital record of notes that I can read anywhere. I can also leave my RM at home and review my notes on the app. At the same time, I recall info (and think better) when notes are written in my own hand.
The price point is what had me debating too.
The fact that it ONLY allows notes/drawings to be stored, can organize them, smaller than a single notebook, has 8Gb total storage (it's about 6.57 after OS/updates), and from this video, learn that it will last more than two years.. I have precisely zero regrets. It also has ways to get data off it if necessary.
I'm a note taker. I filled one notebook for every class in college. I also kept an active journal, AND I took side notes for a job I had. In addition, I also kept notes for my personal life with all sorts of stuff. All at the same time. Keeping the notes and actually being able to reference them was a pain to say the least. I ended up recycling/burning all of the stuff except my journals later.
I can put files into folders, keep things organized and separate, switch notes when necessary, add and remove when required, and keep my notes organized with basic front-end organization with the remarkable. In less than 48 hours of having it, I created and modified 0.39Gb worth of data. All for a size that's smaller than a sheet of paper and thinner than a legal pad.
This isn't for everyone, but heavy note taker's that need/want to reference them easier, need a focus point without distraction, or something a little easier to carry around and literally everywhere with you (I dont feel awkward carrying it in the slightest) for whenever an idea strikes you - this should at least be on a "look at" list. It's also nice for neurodiverse individuals looking to remove distractions from thought processes since it's function is precise. If it isn't something you see that's beneficial and could help you stay organized, that is fine, but this is a product that is very useful to some people.

You mean I could ditch my 99 notebooks I have and I never remember which notebook IT is written in! Id have so much less clutter if I got rid of notebooks, note paper and 1000 pens!! I'm obsessed with notebooks, note pads and pens, markers, highlighters. And I crave declutter.

Yeah. I got mine at the start of the year. Really changed the way I journal and plan my time. I use the Alastair method for planning and follow up my weeks. I usually convert my hand written text and send it into Journey which is my journaling platform. A bit old school in a good way. There isn't a lot of tech that puts a smile on my face. This one does.

My wife and I print recipes to PDF and load to the Remarkable. We then mark up as we adjust and add notes. It is really helpful as I experiment with cheese making recipes.

The remarkable is worth every penny. Btw, currently starts at $$298 USD. I have been using since the first version came out. Increased my productivity, allows spontaneous drawing and focus. It is a huge plus that it doesn’t surf the web etc. it’s for writing and drawing period. Mountains of legal pads are now all in this device.

Yes I also used remarkable 1 and I buy it for $450 with pen and case 5 years ago and this is probably the best purchase I've done so far... Everybody asked me why buying a tablet without multimedia function and apps, I can always answer that "I already had my phone and laptop for that purpose"... And the pen tip is actually pretty cheap, as for now it cost only $34 and you'll got 25 spare tips... Of course it's not as smooth as ipad or samsung tablet, but at least it didn't cost me any anxiety on battery life and software update... I think everyone should give it a try...

Remarkable 2 really is the best. Also the fact that you have access to all the files on the remarkable and on the computer and on your phone with the cloud sync is a game-changer. Having the ability to have many folder, pds, notebooks and more in one place helps so much with multiproject management. You can also do sub-folders as well. So easy to move between folders. Or make duplicates. Also remember you can activate a security code on your remarkable, like a screen lock you would have on your phone. A 4-digit code you choose, to give you some peace of mind that no one else can access your information. :) Great review.

Just went out and bought a remarkable. Watched lots of reviews, this one really helped finalise the decision. One major thing for me was distractions. I find myself in a waze when I use my phone or laptop. I thought about an iPad with paper feel screen protector, but I would just suffer from the same problem. This will be a useful device for university and work. No more scraps of paper in my bag before a lecture trying to find a place to write. Simple and elegant, but does the job.
I find the Remarkable 2 is definitely a useful tablet without the distractions. It is premium and a step up from the original Remarkable tablet which I own as well.

@@kkhorste I was referring to the deign and appearance of both the Remarkable 2. The software has been updated in terms of features and usability. The original Remarkable had multiple software updates during the time I used it.Aesthetically, the Remarkable 2 is premium and professional. No, the company did not have to release a new product from a software perspective.

But it was only after your video I started it and with the rules you mentioned: No negative self talk and commit to action. This "commit to action" was very helpful for me. It woke me really up to make effort. Morning pages gives a good practice platform with it. "Commit to action" affects clear decisions. Thank you.

Why did you pick it over Supernote?
I bought my reMarkable before it was even finished, and have not regretted it (still use the first model). I also have a racing mind and write "morning pages" all day long, as needed; it calms me down and helps me regain focus. Also it works for epub and pdf, which I use a lot in both work an leisure. I like its limitations, why do we need every device to do it all? No one thinks a mobile phone and a computer is redundency, they are both good for different things. And the reMarkable has its place in the gadget park.
Great review! I use mine *exactly* the same way and 2 years later still use it every day. It's amazing for organising tasks, projects, life etc. Love it's simplicity, how it starts in 1 second and just pick up and write.
I've been a remarkable user since the beginning. Was grandfathered in from the old users. I've continuously upgraded through the years. That being said I did purchase the typefolio. My only gripe with all of this is that you cannot have PDF templates and be able to type on them. It's really inconvenient purchasing all these templates and can only be handwritten on. The most positive outcome that I've experienced with having this is that I can keep wiring schematics on here and make changes to them as I need to reroute power and whatnot. Having everything in an organized fashion at a glance is just perfect without computer navigating to get in the way.

Love my reMarakable 2! I inquired a couple of years ago about becoming an affiliate marketer for this product. I did not get approved. I used to buy journals. Then they get full and you don't have them handy when you need them. I have all the value of a paper system ( including the feel) with out any of the down sides. I draw a lot in my Morning Pages and my planner and my journal and this device feels like the best paper. All the other tablets I have tried are too smooth or the emulation is a little off. Every other device distracts me with extra features and then runs out of battery. I want to reaffirm every thing you said. I will add that it is probably not for everyone but for those of us who like things to be just right, and we know who we are, this is the perfect tool. Thank you for saying it so well.
Oh wow! Your video was like a guiding light in my e-ink tablet quest. I've been binge-watching reviews like a true e-ink tablet aficionado, and I was initially leaning towards the Supernote. But your video, my friend, struck a chord with me! That bit about the thinner tablet being easier to write on was a total game-changer - it's not something I had even considered. Thanks to your entertaining and informative review, the scales have tipped in favor of the reMarkable 2. Kudos for helping me make up my mind!
I can say the the thickness of the Supernote is definitely not a big deal. Most of my notebooks have been thicker than the Supernote (before I switched to it) and it just feels normal, like a thin-ish notebook. The feeling of the ceramic nib is simply un-matched and I wouldn't switch my A5X (and A6X) for anything else.

I just finally took the jump and bought one. I do Tech Support, and I am constantly taking little notes or people hand me little notes. I could never keep track of my work. This is light and simple. I now don't have piles of sticky notes all over my desk. I have a Surface Pro, but it's too big. I just needed a notebook that I could always have around but also keep my notes orgainzed. I love it.
Years ago, I’ve went down this rabbit hole as well and went with a Boox e-reader. Similar concept, but you get a larger screen in exchange for a worse writing experience. I prefer the ability to comfortably read large PDFs, while the note-taking workflow doesn’t seem completely solved. You write down stuff and sync it across devices, but the content is not responsive (look at how the script you wrote doesn’t fit well in your phone). So you need OCR, I guess, but I don’t think we’re there yet.
Down the rabbit hole is right. I became obsessed with e-ink note-taking and which one I should try. Finally went with the smaller Supernote and quickly realized my handwriting is way too slow and way too sloppy to make this a viable alternative. I admire the workflow people come up with for these, I just know it ain't for me...
This is video sold me. I'm starting grad school in the fall and my biggest problem in undergrad was misplacing my notebooks for class. Or I'd grab my maths book for my history class so by the end of the week my class notes would be in scattered across like four different composition notebooks. And I got sooooo distracted trying to take notes on my laptop

Im amazed the company that makes this tablet hasn't added an e-book and a subscription service for news/articles. It seems like a simple way to add ease of use and value to the product that may be a good way to get people on the fence to decide to buy the tablet. If they can release a color version I might be enticed to purchasing one someday.

This is very interesting. I really love e-ink stuff. I recently started using the Paper app on iPad and it reminds me a lot of this kind of workflow. It's very limited and those constraints help a lot! Too many things these days have lots of features, and I don't want to waste time tinkering. I do wish there was a colour e-ink version of the Paper app as a tablet, that would be ideal...

You may find the Boox Tab Ultra C worth a look. Though it is more feature rich, it does really get out of the way once you’ve got a workflow established after the learning curve.

I'm assuming you've gotten it at this point. How is it working as far as mind-maps go? I feel like the nature of it not expanding horizontally forever and only expanding vertically is very restrictive for mind-maps. What's your experience?

I loved the RM1, I used that thing for meeting and taking it out to engineering sites to sketch diagrams, make notes or read drawings.
I was sent a newsletter for the RM2+Type Folio and got it for 650. Videos like this helped make me justify it even though I already had positive experiences with the RM1.

I just want to say thank you. I have been looking through all of the review videos for this tablet and other e-write paper tablets and this was the most honest and useful review I have found. I enjoyed the layout of the video, the style of transitions and scenery. I just want a simple notebook style tablet to take notes, organize my writing, function as a planner, sync, and not much more than that. This looks like it's going to be exactly that and someone who appreciates something well built, sleek, and tactile is also appreciated. I think this has convinced me the remarkable may be the tablet for me. I also appreciated the insight on your daily use and a few suggestions as to how to better organize your life, your day, and improve one's daily mental health. Would you suggest spending the money on the folio and the pen? Have you tried any other third-party folios? Again, thank you so much for the work you put in to this video. It's finally what I was looking for.
Might be too late but the remarkable folio's aren't worth the money - they're very nice, but you can get decent third party ones much, much cheaper. I liked the better pen but you can also get cheaper alternatives with the eraser function (like the pencil he shows)
I’d say yes, I cringed a little at the price but if you’re a textile/ tactile oriented person I highly recommend, it’s a beautiful investment, I’m glad I got the black en that erases and the black book folio. The texture is unmatched

I'm not sure why I'm watching this as I have one, broke it and just bought a replacement because I love it so much but... I love how you mentioned how thin is what being better for how it feels, that is 100% spot on but I didn't think about it until now. I originally bought mine fore notes in college, as I had a iPad but found myself getting distracted by other apps and not liking the feel of using a stylus on it. I have since (before it broke) used mine every day, I love notebooks and keeping stuff written down but this lets me do it all in one small form factor. My plan is to eventually try the new keyboard as well.

I just feel like you should have mentioned the kind of ridiculous subscription model which totally turned me off from buying it to be honest (maybe they changed it back idk).
I initially talked about it, but then realized that everything I personally do with the tablet doesn’t require the paid subscription. Remarkable should definitely makes things more clear as to what the paid Vs non-paid experience is like with the tablet. Maybe that should be an entirely separate video 🤷🏻♂️ In any case, thanks for the input! Much appreciated.

I started reading a lot of articles for a course am doing and I was really bothered with the strain long periods of reading put on my eyes. I also started journaling, tracking my expenses, tracking my habits, writing ideas for a RUclips channel I want to start... I now have a bunch of notebooks. So this was something that immediately grabbed my attention. I got a great deal of the secondary market so I jumped on it. It's great.

The reason I'm looking at getting one of these. I have a pretty low end spectrum ADHD (diagnosed, not just claiming), and one thing that is a huge issue is I end up with 10 notebooks with 2 or 3 pages filled out in the beginning. It's really annoying. This is probably something I might end up buying today, and this is a really really great video. You almost had me sold in like the first 2 minutes.

Thanks! That mic is actually an old AKG C1000S. It's not really intended to be a vocal mic, but I agree, somehow it does a good job with voice work.
I'm not sure if Remarkable will be releasing a new device soon. They spent so many years developing the current one and seems to be going with a model that is based on creating new accessories and subscription models. We'll see though!
Thanks for a great review! In part as a result of your unbiased evaluation of this product, I purchased the new ReMarkable Paper Pro. I’m a big believer in writing and ideating with pen and paper, but the result was an ever multiplying collection of notebooks, littering my office and a complete inability to locate older ideas with any degree of alacrity. The ReMarkable Paper Pro has changed that. I also want to emphasize a point that you make, which is that this piece of tech does far less than almost in the other piece of tech that I own - but that’s the point. Because it is scoped so narrowly, I can focus.
I do enjoy my remarkable 1. Not sure if it's worth spending 600+ dollars (plus all the accessories) CDN to upgrade. A bit disheartened to hear there's a monthly fee for certain features.
I think the best feature you mentioned was the built in pen eraser. Does the premium pen work on the R1?

Hey. Early adopter and owner of both rM1 and rM2. With regards to the "pro pen", you have to ask yourself "do I really need the pencil eraser on the back?". You may be thinking, as I was, "oh I'm sure I'm going to start using the eraser if I just had it. It's clearly superior", but that's not good enough. Do you _really_ use the cheap double pencil eraser, and not a dedicated eraser, when you write on paper? Are you accustomed, perhaps even obsessively so, to the compulsion of turning around your pen mid-sentence to correct every few mistakes, only to turn the pen back around to resume note? Because I wasn't. And if you aren't already, I doubt that's going to change.
Before epaper, I was a heavy physical note taker (although I eventually turned to fountain pens and rejected erasers altogether), filling a notebook or two every month. I found the feeling of writing on a screen (any screen really, neither rM or other epaper being any exception) being so far removed from the pressure and friction I had required that I spent years making 10x more mistakes while retraining my hand to the unforgivingly slippery scratch surface of an engineered faux plastic/glass pad with awkward tracking.
I can't seem to repeat this often enough, but while I respect rM and other epaper tablet manufacturers for their commitment to bridge the gap between the physical and digital, the reality is this: From the outer extremes of abstract, virtual written expression being 0% to tactile, analogue pigment on solid matter being 100%, even with the amazing technological breakthroughs of epaper and software, we're only 75% there at best. And we may never get further than 90% in our lifetimes. The gap will never really disappear.
With this reality check in place, I urge you to reconsider what it means to "replace" paper. And instead converge on a way to satisfactorily "integrate" digital tools into your current preference for analogue equivalents. What this means, in practice, is to learn from the most successful approaches in each niche (the digitalists and the nostalgists, respectively). And looking at what highly successful digital pen artists (and writers for that matter) do, there is no question the "Undo" button is the centerpiece of their workflow (irrespective of word processor or drawing software). (Others being such things as single key tool swap physical keyboard commands, unfortunately not present in consumer tablets such as rM.)
I had to learn through trial and error that the "eraser" I thought I needed didn't serve the same purpose in digital as it did in physical. Unsurprisingly, it took more time to select an eraser tool, painstakingly trace the area with the disproportionate brush size and tracking, wait for the software to render the process so I can glance over the vector image and confirm my touchup before ultimately retoggling the pen tool, than it took to hit "Undo", and return the software to a previous state, already saved in memory, without the toggle. Naturally, I know there are benefits to and use cases for erasers. For recreational writers and artists perhaps that approach is preferred. But once you're writing for a job, and the writing itself is slow and tedious, you'll start asking yourself why you chose the slightly more uncomfortable device for the job, when you could've just had a stack of disposable stickies or the back of an envelope and a ballpoint. "Undo" is a better tool, albeit digital magic. Please consider using it.
With that out of the way, there are really only four reasons to acquire the rM2 over the original:
1. More responsive hardware.
2. Better contrast.
3. USB Type-C future-proofed
4. Ambidexterity for lefties.
On the contrary, there are still many benefits of the original rM:
1. Better feeling surface.
2. Buttons.
3. Servicability.
4. USB _with data_ (no pogo pins) meaning you can connect a 3rd party keyboard.
5. Lightweight.
While rM2's slim form factor and smaller footprint are nice, unfortunately it's a luxury few people actually benefit from after attaching their magnetic folio. And once you're learned to comfortably write on a digital surface, the few millimeters off the table won't bother you anymore either. The depth becomes a fact of life easily compensated for with pocket accessories (note, handkerchief, wallet, phone). Not to mention there are cases for most epaper tablets that add incline for comfort. See, my $20 rM1 case is considerably more useful and comfortable than my now $169 magnetic leather rM2 folio ever was.
And the battery, at least in my experience, is only slightly improved in rM2 over rM1. They're both so exceptionally long lasting compared to existing screen technologies, and you're going to want to charge them every day or so anyway for peace of mind if you use them full-time, so it's really not something you should think about.
I still prefer to use rM2 for the aforementioned reasons. The contrast and responsiveness simply make it more comfortable for reading and _looking at the screen_, which, arguably, is still the main purpose and advantage of epaper.
I have been toying with the idea of purchasing the remarkable2, but could not find a review that really convinced me that this was a good purchase. A friend highly recommended it and then I came across your video which also solidified my decision to make the purchase. Thank you for explaining it so clearly.

I ahve seen a lot of reviews as I try to decide if I want to be someone who buys a 600 dollar bundle to replace my $2 legal pad. and this is the video that did me in. Loved seeing you use it and give feedback. Gave me a real sense of what life might be like to integrate somethign like this.
So weird! I've been looking into these (mainly Remarkable 2 vs iPad) and just pulled the trigger yesterday. No sooner did I do that, than the RUclips algorithm served me this video. Cue a double-take - "Wait... is that Loam Ranger?!". Yes it was and I wished I'd seen this a few days ago because it's far and away the best Remarkable 2 'review' and would have made my decision so much easier! I absolutely love Remarkable 2 tablet. With years writing in scattered notes and papers, I found a place to jott everything down. Its really remarkable!! And a nice video showcasing how remarkable it is.
Thank you. The Remarkable caught my eye a while ago, but I never found a compelling case for buying one. Especially after I looked up the price. I'm still in no hurry to buy one, but now I know why and how it could be useful. I have a love/hate relationship with paper. I always wrote terribly (my mom taught me typing when I was in 6th grade in the hopes that I could create legible schoolwork). But through decades of programming, I have filled endless pads with my scribbled text and diagrams. It was the only way I could organize my thoughts. But I hated the crossing out, the inability to shift text and my reluctance to copy over to new pages. Sure I type notes into the computer but as you said, using the hands is qualitatively different than typing.

oh man i was going to buy an iPad but you've got me with the no distractions. i am always leaving the house trying to find 4 notebooks to bring with me, my ideas book, my diary, to do list, etc.
The battery life is EVERYTHING. Try taking your Ipad to sit in the the park, or on a camping trip, so you can doodle or journal. It's impossible to relax because the battery is drip-drip-dripping. I've picked up my Remarkable after months of not using it, and it is near-fully charged and ready to go. By the way, what model is your "personal camera"? A Leica, maybe? I want to get rid of all my SLRs and lenses and get something basic.
100%. I definitely appreciate having such long battery life.
As for the camera, that’s a Leica M2. Not having a built-in meter is a bit tricky sometimes, but boy do I love the fact that there’s essentially nothing that can break on it!

It doesn’t matter how much something can do, it matters what you’ll actually use.
Personally I would like a few more features, maybe eBooks and OCR, but the Remarkable 2 does seems perfect in a way because of what it can’t do.
Thank you for this very thorough review. I currently own a Kindle Scribe, which I absolutely love for reading and taking notes in books and occasionally using the notebook feature. However, I'm in the market for a more sophisticated device to replace all of my notebooks. I love to write things down, but I'm compiling items in my small space. I really like the device's design, and now there is a folio feature for typing. I am excited to make a purchase soon.
If you have a corporate job, the remarkable is an absolute saviour. You never lose your notes, you never have to mess about with note pads, you can email the notes straight to yourself, and you are exempt from pen thieves.
I'm not even going to buy the Remarkable. Yet. But this was the best review I've seen online for any product. I learned a lot about the product, but I learned more about mindfulness and organization. And getting just the right amount of denim.
