I watched a thousand videos comparing all of the options, none of them really answered what I needed to make my decision. Until I saw this video. For real, your story was 100% exactly a direct answer to all questions and doubts I had. Thank you very much. And remarkable 2 it is, then.
His video's not as unbiased and wonderful as you think. With the ReMarkable, you have to pay a subscription to sync those files and make it interoperable.
I know, I wish I had watched this video before getting the Scribe. Just unboxed and I’m going to send back. Still watching and not sure which device I’m going to get, but I need a better template customization.
Love the video! The story line was very well done and helped me relate better to the decision making. As someone with a similar background and priorities this helped a ton. Thanks!
Thank you for saving me a year 🙏🏻 I have been comparing all these tablets for just one afternoon and I beyond exhausted 😅 And in the end, I got to the same conclusion. So Remarkable it is.
One of the best reviews. Answers all the questions I had in my mind and watched dozens of videos to find the right, THIS IS IT. Thank you for doing this.
This has been insanely helpful. I'm going through tons of comparison videos trying to make a final decision. Oddly, I felt myself also going full circle and landing back on the Remakable, as my use case is all about note taking and managing notes. Thanks for an excellent video!
What's the best large cheapest with the highest resolution screen reader for books in dark to ? Onyx Boox Note Air or has Kobo Forma ....or something else ? I don't care about anything else
I have gone through a similar journey in search of the perfect e-reader (notes optional for me), so I can relate to your thoroughness and passion. I've settled on the Kindle Scribe and the Boox Palma. Brilliant storytelling, by the way. It's hard to imagine a more compelling video about e-Ink devices.
I bought my Remarkable 1 in 2018. As a teacher, I use it everyday in class as my planner, marks book and notebook etc. I absolutely love it. It’s still going strong! Gets all the updates and if I lost it or damaged it, I would re-purchase. I was so surprised at the beginning of the video that you had dismissed it😉 always watch till the end. Great video!
Such a comprehensive review of all the different products I had also been looking at. I just need a good basic digital notetaker, and writing on the ipad kinda sucks. All the other ones just have so much extra stuff, I don't need all that. I have an ereader, an ipad, normal laptop and phone.. I don't need a digital notetaker to replace them, I just needed a digital notebook. Thank you so much. Also, loved the story of reviews as a throughline process from each different product to the next.
For me, I initially liked the Kindle Scribe more than the iPad Air 5 because I wanted better visual health and for my eyes not to burn when writing down and reading for so long, but then I missed some functions of the iPad and having even a minimal color in my notes, that's how I found the perfect one for me, the boox note air 3c, in my case it's great, I sold the iPad and the kindle and I kept it and in my case there is the better device, it's worth every penny , very fast, electric screen and almost all the functions of an iPad or a galaxy tab.
I'm confused, the Note (+case) was too expensive at £550, but the remarkable (+case) was not at £477 when it seems to come with less features? Remarkable get's points for sync, but only with their own app, which is what you gave negatives points to both the Scribe and Tab for? I don't own any of these devices, but from only what you said, not showed, your scoring seems weird?
It's not confusing, it's crazy town banana pants... This guy is bizarre and the format of the video is unusable. He immediately wrote off the remarkable 2 because "it only takes notes" even though he says many times that that is all he needs the device to do, only to come back at the end and say " nevermind, it's the best one".
Thank you for doing the heavy lifting on this. I have been using a Rocketbook for a couple of years and I really like it, but I do often fill up the pages and have to revert to paper again. You did the hard work on evaluating alternatives so I won’t have to!
I want to commend your hardwork. Appreciate the effort so it would be somehow easier for us to decide what to get for a digital notebook for our productivity! Thank you!
Great video and very informative but you never reviewed the King of note taking... The Supernote. I've been using mine for a year now and the speed you can crash through different notebooks and back again, organise, link, search through and build structures is really productive.
This is some absolutely excellent and to the point review. I started getting in the e-ink tablets world and I was overwhelmed and was going on circles between Remarkable 2 and Boox note 3 monochrome. People on reddit kept saying that there experience with Boox was worth and they were disappointed and for me, having a fully functional Android device where I can install kindle able on it was getting the best of 2 worlds. But for me having a superior note taking app was more important. So you video helped me a lot, Thank you!
Wow, this is totally uncanny... I have literally followed this exact path, including Moleskine, RocketBook, the repurchase of the Kindle Scribe and at least four different Boox... and have finally just repurchased the RM2 and it just feels like being back home... but with so many improvements to the software since 2021, just love the gestures that are now available, makes working with the device so logical, intuitive and most of all FUN! Thanks for telling your story, so glad it's not just me!
Wait, did you know you can do all of that with the Boox Note Air 3C? You can even use it as a secondary display with the Spacedesk App, run Zoom, sync with Google Drive, utilize its own cloud service with autosync, and even use Obsidian instead of the rather subpar Evernote. I don't think it's even expensive. Unlike a phone or any Apple device, it's a one-time purchase that won't become obsolete in six months, especially being an e-ink device.
Very relatable. Thank you for the help! I just wish I had your experience with the SuperNote. With the updates, its feature set seems to be fully in my wheelhouse. But a steal of a deal on a remarkable 2 sealed it for me.
The remarkable is excellent. In the end the simpler os makes it’s battery last the longest and the write feel is amazing. I wish they’d add the possibility of creating links both between pages on a notebook and between different ones but the first can be done with linked pdf “templates”. And also it’s great you can add and move pages from a pdf document. About the light: I’m glad it doesn’t have one actually. It’s easier on the eyes and the “ink” is much closer to the tip of the pen
That's what happened to me. From Onyx Boox, tested remarkable 2, returned it, to get it back 6 months later because I could stop missing it. Now I am super happy a year later and does not miss my Boox Note nor the LUMI 2.
you returned the remarkable the first time because of its "limited use" when you were really only looking for a digital notebook lol remarkable is a great writing device as I had the 1st gen but then because of its limited functionality, I don't often use it. The best bang for the buck is the amazon scribe as it takes notes and it's the arguably the #1 e-reader / e-book ecosystem. Now I read more often AND take notes. Indeed, it is kinda hilarious that I went full circle. The Scribe had two showstoppers for me (1) zero sync capabilities other than to another Kindle. No ability to get into my business workflow (2) I found it was simply too big for reading, at least a nice cosy novel - eg no good reading in bed. So, overall the Scribe was just an expensive big Kindle - for me. Thanks for your comment - much appreciated
I find reading on the scribe delightful, since I can rotate to landscape and use a 2-columns layout. The columns are narrow enough for comfortable reading, and I can still see more than a few rows of text at the same time. What I miss is a quick toggle between the e-reader and the notebook app.
@@cpsthrume agree. the 2 column layout on the scribe feels like you're have a pocket book on your hands. I don't like having to swipe every page and having two pages feels like I progress through the book more efficiently

Thanks for the feedback. Now You are a tricky one 😄 Firstly I have had iPads for years, and in the last 4 years an iPad PRO 11 - which is still a fabulous device. But as you know, in this process I bought a iPad Mini and my big iPad Pro is now rarely used. So one option for you is writing on iPad Mini, if you are happy with iPad writing…..just get a ‘cheap’ 64g one or even refurbished. IF you are happy writing on iPad I would definitely consider a cheaper iPad as your ‘cheap traveller’, otherwise you will be forced to carry two devices. Hope this helps a bit
@@healthtechgizmos1305 Thanks for the idea. I will look into it. I hadn't thought about getting just a smaller, less fancy iPad. Then it would sync easily... Hmmm. Thank you!

I'm getting a review unit of the a6 x2 Nomad this month, can't wait to review the dedicated drawing app on it and try those ceramic heart of metal pens 📃🖊 there switch to sustainability and modularity is quite impressive too
This is a good outlining of your process and how you use the device. I looked hard at the Remarkable 2 but ended up with the Supernote instead. I haven't used paper in almost 3 years as a result.
Totally agree ... Remarkable for the win ... Almost in my case. I wish - it was powerfull enough to manage oversized PDF (Architectural plans) which require fresuent zoom in and out while annotating. - Ligth for on sie ease of use while in dim locations Still on the hunt for the perfect device for my paperless jouney in this use case. Remarkable is perfect for pages size to A4, bigger is a pain as lagging and showing it's power limitation. Hoping for a beefier remarkable 3 !
Great video. Been looking for such a comparison for some time and this was the only proper comparison that made good points. Now I know what I am getting.
Thank you so much. You've done a lot of the hard work already. I am looking for a digital notepad myself, primarily for note taking as yourself. The one I noticed you didn't include was the Supernote. I'm curious if you looked at that one as well because i'm comparing that to the Remarkable 2 as well. Love to hear your thoughts.
Awesome review thanks. I was looking at buying the Remarkable 2 but reviews about poor connectivity turned me towards the Onyx. But, reviews about the poor colour and laggy refresh put me off that too. So I was stuck until I came across your review. Now, like you, I've come full circle and will look at buying the Remarkable 2. Cheers.
FWIW, for the Kindle Scribe, you can actually view your notebooks on the iOS, Android and Mac apps. I have the Nova Air 2, Scribe, ipad mini, and 12.9 inch iPad Pro. I love the Scribe the most amongst all of them for writing/journaling. Only thing I wish they add to the Scribe is support for searching handwritten notes. While I love the Nova Air's size and screen clarity, I disliked how slow and cumbersome the software is. I think Amazon has the most performant/responsive e-ink software out of all which is also why I'm happy to stick w the Scribe. I'd love to try out the Supernote but it's not easily available in my country.
I’m surprised the kobo elipsa 2E didn’t end up on ur review list. I’ve recently been watching these sorts of videos and it seems to do quite a bit more in many areas compared to others especially if ur wanting to use it as an e-reader and annotate directly on the page. It has many other note specific features too so I think I may pick one up soon. I’m from London and I got a kobo libra 2 earlier this year and it has been amazing especially being able to read my borrowed library books from Libby on it without having to sideload or anything just pops straight up on my kobo as soon as I borrow a book. This is amazing to me as here in the uk we don’t often get these sort of perks like many other overseas countries do. Even more so that kobo seems to often been seen as less than kindle where in fact the quality, ease of use and integration definitely surpasses my kindle paperwhite. I enjoy them both but definitely think people need to look into the underdog a bit more. Great video at least u can say u got to try various products.
I went through a similar journey and came to the same conclusion :-) though I would say each of these devices is the right tool for the right job at the right time. I ended up with the reMmarkable and ordered a new KindleSscribe on Black Friday. I gave away my Rocketbook :-)
I went with the Boox Note Air 3C. Total winner for me. Does color, runs Android apps, if I use Google Keep or OneNote it automatically syncs those notes across all my devices (laptop, smartphone, Android or Apple tablets), has expandable storage, has speakers, has Bluetooth, has a microphone, etc. I love it. Some people want to be limited, so they go with other e-ink tablets. I don't want to feel too limited. I love the fact that I can go into the Android apps store and I have a world of apps to choose from, or I can just keep the Boox as bare as I want.
@@shelbyr14 No idea what they're talking about. What do they mean? You have to consider that unlike other e-ink tablets, you can load any Android app onto the Boox, and obviously not every app is going to work with an e-ink tablet or pen. I would rather have the option of loading an Android app than not having that option. The Boox can do more but it can't do everything. But that's still a lot more than what other e-ink tablets can do. I've had no problem using the pen across numerous other apps.
I made a rocket book frame that I could use around any document I wanted to digitise, it is essentially a rocket book page with the centre cut out. Most of note taking is done on my iPad Pro 11", if the remarkable 2 run OneNote and the Kindle app, it would be a winner for me.
You have to pay for sync, No backlight means you dont get to use it in bed while reading or in a car as a passenger. THe boox note 2 or 3 black & white gives you everthing here and room for expansion. Remarkable is just not there yet. It woulld be nice if Apple came out with both an e ink phone and tablet.
I think indeed supernote a6x2 will be the best fit. I also used rm2 (sold, used for 3 month), boox air 2( that one j returned the same day), supernote a5x(sold it. Too big). In love with mu a6x2. Small , portable. So easy to take with yoy.
I did a whole degree and just about finished my masters using an ipad with apple pencil. At this point I can write as nicely on it as with real paper and the paperlike really helps. Always kind of jealous of the remarkable people though, it looks like a very cool product. I wish I could have installed those screen protectors for you though! Dust specs under a screen protector are the worst.
Would love to see your take on the new Daylight tablet. Expensive at the moment since it just launched this week, but really looking forward to the incredible improvements it can bring
Hmmmm……that one looks interesting. Unfortunately the new Supernote has been delayed, which was on my list as many people in this thread were giving Supernote praise
I’ve tried most of these devices and also thought the RM2 was the most attractive device to use. The only reason I didn’t keep it was the return window was closing and I just felt I N would feel stoopid when Boox or Supernote released 2024 machines which operate much faster than the RM2 leaving me feeling the money was wasted. I have mild regret but hope the near future will prove me right.
I have the Supernote A5X and am biting at the bit waiting for the A4 version released early next year, which I've heard may have a split screen mode... meaning, I can review a document one pane and build notes in the other. But I think if you're in a busy office environment and need to collaborate loads... you've got to be looking at a Boox device.
@@davidr1431 I can't justify purchasing the A5X2 when I already have an A5x. Still, I am filling the hard drive pretty quickly and can burn through a battery charge in a couple of days and thus, the limited battery cycles so an A5X2 would be nice with its SD card slot and replaceable battery... while the A4X2 _[if thats what it is called]_ is a must. The only thing that may dissuade me from purchasing the A4X2 is if is a _'slim version',_ which I've heard some call it, and if that means it doesn't have a replaceable battery. Then I might just go for the A5X2 because of the limited cycles all batteries suffer.
OneNote works quite well on Hold devices. I have the Ultra C and with the latest updates it works great. Having the possibility to add an keyboard makes it brillant. I advice you again to use the Bold Note Air 3C with OneNote and put the screen to high contrast and in fast mode...
So my experience was that to write notes INTO Evernote (I assume OneNote is the same) you have to write in a small box at the bottom of the screen - about 1/4 height of screen - which I found a poor interface. Is that how it works in OneNote? Do you find it effective?
@@healthtechgizmos1305 No, OneNote is fully optimized for the Boox devices and works almost as good as the native app (except handpalm recognition especially as I'm left handed and Android as a whole is not optized for this)
Thanks very much for making this video. Are you still using ReMarkable 2 as your primary note-taking device? I am eyeing the new iPad 11 Pro with paperlike or other cover that helps with writing. I use EverNote for my notes and Kindle for reading which the iPad can do. It can also serve as my reading device for morning RSS feeds- but the writing experience needs to be good.
One kinda solution….you can use coloured pens on Remarkable. You cannot see on the device, but when you sync with a laptop or regular tablet you will see the colours. If you really need color on eInk just set your expectation that it is very weak, with minimal colours, due to the eInk screen technology. So if you are coming from a regular iPad or Android tablet it will look very very different. But it may be fine for your use case
SUPERNOTE A6X2- Now that is a good one you really missed that is also smaller, more portable and less expensive. PLUS REMARKABLE IS STILL WAY EXPENSIVE

This is a good outlining of your process and how you use the device. I looked hard at the Remarkable 2 but ended up with the Supernote instead. I haven't used paper in almost 3 years as a result.
Is there a subscription cost?
@@karenmickel6205 No, Supernote doesn't have a subscription.
Awesome video and story telling. Will you get us your thoughts on the newly released Pro?
I actually really enjoyed this informative story review.
You got my attention right way and enjoyed how explained plus and minuses. Looking for a b/w think remarable 2 could be the one.
Totally agree ... Remarkable for the win ... Almost in my case.
I wish
- it was powerfull enough to manage oversized PDF (Architectural plans) which require fresuent zoom in and out while annotating.
- Ligth for on sie ease of use while in dim locations
Still on the hunt for the perfect device for my paperless jouney in this use case.
Remarkable is perfect for pages size to A4, bigger is a pain as lagging and showing it's power limitation.
Hoping for a beefier remarkable 3 !
Thanks for the holistic long-term view and insights!
Great video. Been looking for such a comparison for some time and this was the only proper comparison that made good points. Now I know what I am getting.
This kind of review is the best. I salute you!
You will be thrilled to see the new reMarkable Paper Pro that has everything we have been looking for! Just out today!
brilliant story telling art!
That’s the one I didn’t try. Seems super popular option with many on this thread
Cheers.
I can honestly say that the sync from device to their Cloud, and then to my desktop app, or iPad is super fast. Typically less that 5 seconds.
omg... this is the best video to find a good ereader tablet.. i have similar case with you and thanks for the recommendation!
I did like the Scribe writing, just the toolset was very limited, the the Cloud sync had those issues. Lots of people looking Supernote it seems
Thank you so much for this useful review, you have saved us a lot of money and time, for sure!
Great video. I have the R2 and at first thought - oh no! But was glad to see you came around to it in the end. Thanks for this. Very thorough.
I’ll take a deeper look at the Kobo. Sounds interesting
I went through a similar journey and came to the same conclusion :-) though I would say each of these devices is the right tool for the right job at the right time. I ended up with the reMmarkable and ordered a new KindleSscribe on Black Friday. I gave away my Rocketbook :-)
I loved your review! Straightforward and helpful. Thanks
When they said the pen doesn't sync with the other apps, that was a dealbreaker for me. Has that not been the case with yours?
@@shelbyr14 No idea what they're talking about. What do they mean? You have to consider that unlike other e-ink tablets, you can load any Android app onto the Boox, and obviously not every app is going to work with an e-ink tablet or pen. I would rather have the option of loading an Android app than not having that option. The Boox can do more but it can't do everything. But that's still a lot more than what other e-ink tablets can do.
I've had no problem using the pen across numerous other apps.
@@peterphan227 Thank you 🙂
@@shelbyr14 In many reviews I read they just said the pen is SLOWER when working with other apps, so there is some sort of lag.
@@peterphan227 Also Boox tends to issue updates and continue to support their machines for at least 3 years
Thank you so much! you are the only one who has reviewed all the devices and is truly honest🙏
Great video but you missed the Supernote. This is rated as the best notetaker by reviewers.
I made a rocket book frame that I could use around any document I wanted to digitise, it is essentially a rocket book page with the centre cut out.
Most of note taking is done on my iPad Pro 11", if the remarkable 2 run OneNote and the Kindle app, it would be a winner for me.
Amazing video and comparison
You have to pay for sync, No backlight means you dont get to use it in bed while reading or in a car as a passenger. THe boox note 2 or 3 black & white gives you everthing here and room for expansion. Remarkable is just not there yet. It woulld be nice if Apple came out with both an e ink phone and tablet.
I found the form factor too big for reading in bed. Hence Scribe and others failed that test - for me
I think indeed supernote a6x2 will be the best fit. I also used rm2 (sold, used for 3 month), boox air 2( that one j returned the same day), supernote a5x(sold it. Too big). In love with mu a6x2. Small , portable. So easy to take with yoy.
Seems like we have had a similar journey. I may be tempted to try Supernote
That is EXACTLY my use case. Its why I am thinking E Ink.
Thank you. Top review. Love your style.
Absolutely great review! I wish I waited for the review!
Great review. But did you try the Supernote Nomad or any of the Supernote devices to compare?
Not yet!
@@karlmunford7000 An A4 super note would be awesome with split screen mode. If the A5X2 is 300 ppi I will get it as the A4X doesn’t sound imminent.
Thankyou for this much effort to giving us inside
OneNote works quite well on Hold devices. I have the Ultra C and with the latest updates it works great. Having the possibility to add an keyboard makes it brillant. I advice you again to use the Bold Note Air 3C with OneNote and put the screen to high contrast and in fast mode...
So my experience was that to write notes INTO Evernote (I assume OneNote is the same) you have to write in a small box at the bottom of the screen - about 1/4 height of screen - which I found a poor interface. Is that how it works in OneNote? Do you find it effective?
@@healthtechgizmos1305 No, OneNote is fully optimized for the Boox devices and works almost as good as the native app (except handpalm recognition especially as I'm left handed and Android as a whole is not optized for this)
Hmmmm….interesting
Speaking as a fountain pen collector, the best non eink tablet for writing notes is Samsung's Tab S8 or S9 Ultra.
A would really struggle to fully go to the Android ‘dark side’
I spent a year on Galaxy Tab S7FE and I still love it, but I moved to e-ink for my eyes. Had to get Tab Ultra because needed 13.3' screen.
Great video, I've been searching for a true and honest review of the Remarkable 2 and I've found it, you have convinced me to make the purchase. :)
Nicely done! You helped me out greatly.
wow, this is such a great review, thank you so much!
you just earned another subscriber! thank you :) really helpful
This is an awesome review, thank you
amazing explanation😍
Very much appreciated review.
Fantastic review, thank you !
Fantastic review!!!! Thank you!
Fantastic review, well presented and relevant
But a very well created video. Kudos.
Thanks for your video. You’ve helped me decide.
thanks a lot. i have been looking to switch from paper. idk how i feel about not having color though. kind of needed in my usecase.
Best review out!
SUPERNOTE A6X2- Now that is a good one you really missed that is also smaller, more portable and less expensive. PLUS REMARKABLE IS STILL WAY EXPENSIVE
Seems like the device I missed. Lots of votes from everyone for that one
