    SAC Barrel vise is my go too now... for stuborn actions E.G. Rem 700's, I use a small bottle jack shop press, appropriate aluminum bushings and rosin. Paired with a relief cut groove near the shoulder from the lathe, Itll get the most stuborn actions off

    Thank you Gavin, this is the content I'm looking for.
    Also... Can confirm: Using your torque wrench as a breaker bar will "F" it up... Failed to instruct one of my boys on that... I now have a long, heavy, expensive paperweight.
    Use a breaker bar.

    After working in aviation for almost a decade, I recommend applying your choice of thread lube onto the male and female threads. You don't have to use more, just half on one then the other

      @@chriswilder583 Agree with you. While it will coat both, the issue becomes as you thread the two. The male end will push some in front of it and won't interface between the two where it matters.

    When a locking compound (red Locktite for example) is used on a factory action, is fire an option? The procedure would be to apply enough heat to melt the compound but not enough to warp or discolor the barrel or action. I know mechanics run into this all the time and the expectation is that the torch will be used. Also, when a barrel is simply too tight, heating the barrel, from the outside obviously, will expand it a little and may loosen it enough to be removed.

  • @davecundiff3663
    @davecundiff3663 Год назад

    Looks like the first barrel and action you assembled was a Zeus action with the quick change barrel set screw. This action used the shoulder on the barrel to set the headspace and no torque is reqiured. You just twist the barrel and tighten the set screw on both sides.

    Question are factory barrelled actions like howa Remington etc super over torqued? Reason I ask is I did a howa 1500 semi custom project rebuilding it from more hunting style rifle to something or suited for prs. When I tried to remove the factory barrel I had one heck of a time getting off before taking to a local gunsmith. When I got the action back he asked if I wanted the barrel back because he said he may need to part a section off. He further when on that when the action finally came off it sounded like a round went off! Just asking if that’s just a one off phenomenon or big box factory actions are just like that to keep in mind…side note love your content and thank you for inspiring me to study and learn gunsmithing

    It is true to not use a torque wrench to loosen anything. It is designed only for tightening and can be ruined by untightening bolts and whatever else it is used to tighten. Also, for the best accuracy, you should never have your hand on the head of the torque wrench when you tighten something. It gives inaccurate torque otherwise. Nice vids though. I always learn something when I watch them.

    My Wilton vice has jaws for holding round stock with some gnarly teeth for holding the barrel and for the receiver I got the biggest pipe wrench that Harbor Freight sells. It works awesome, never slips and the marks it leaves is like a signature, better than laser engraving. Don't try to copy my technique, it's patented and I can spot a fake a mile away, literally.

    Great video Gavin.
    I know I am asking for something specialized, but have you ever encountered a barrel instal on a Walther KK500 .22 match rifle. I know that special machining is required for the extractor slots and on the tang. The barrels are glued into the action with an unknown adhesive. I see allot if these rifles at the matches I shoot and I believe there is a need for a proper way to rebarrel this very popular match smallbore action.
    Thanks again.

    • @geckoproductions4128
      @geckoproductions4128 Год назад +1

      Yes, with a 22 you can press fit the barrel tenon into the action and hold with cylinder sleeve adhesive. This stuff is LIKE but not exactly the same as loctite and is actually intended for use in resleeving large engines. For cutting the extractor relief cuts use a woodruff key seat cutter of the appropriate size. This can most easily be done on a mill, but can be done on a lathe with a tool post grinder with an end mill mounted in it. Hope this helps....good luck.

    Gavin: I build inexpensive but accurate rifles in South Texas. I have been using Yugo / Mauser actions for price/performance value, installing custom barrels on them, Timmy triggers and stock of customers choice. These run from 22-250 to 308 and 30.06 with good results. I have been using the HF hydraulic press barrel vise and rosin technique to get em off and the lathe to put em back on. I am curious though. When is the best TIR repeatability you can get out of your six jaw? I can't seem to get better than a couple of thou. BTW: I heard you came from the IT world. I did too. Was a tech writer in a Fortune 500 computer company in Engineering and later R&D.....way back in the 80s! Loved the video and subscribed

    If I understood the point of you installing the barrel using the Lathes Chuck Jaws. That technique creates extremely uniform rigidity of the fixture, correct? I would assume because of the rigidity of the Chuck Jaws during the Torque operation which ultimately creates a better crush as the barrel seats? How does the Grease effect Torque Values 10%, 20% or more?😊
