- The Savage barrel nut system allows rifle builders the option to swap barrels in just a few minutes. Mike and Josh go through the steps required to remove the factory barrel and replace it with a match grade Criterion replacement barrel.
Awesome ! All I need is a few more tools and go/no-go gauge, and even a former auto mechanic like myself that's also built racing engines, can do a barrel swap on my 308 Savage !! It doesn't look quite like 'rocket science' !! Great video guys ! Guess I will have to special order mine from RDSC in Alberta, Canada !
I have a pair of Criterion Barrels for my 223's on order that will be chambered with my custom reamer through NSS. Should be here end of December. Excited to get my hands on these and mount them to the actions and get to the range again.
A tip for those removing a Savage barrel with a smooth barrel nut. A pipe wrench will easily take it off. Throw that nut away and replace it with a nut from Northland.
The hardest part is removing the bolt face parts, yet you didn't even show that. Need three hands. Come on guys.
Fitted a Criterion barrel from Northland Shooter Supply on a 6mm pre-fit barrel on a Savage Model 10. Total process was about 20 minutes in addition to taking down and reassembling the rifle. Good to look at a bolt replacement from Pacific Tool & Gauge with barrel swap. Great experience and I look forward to good results based on the recommendations I'm following.

are you saying that torquing the barrel not down to 50 ft lbs is way to much?
@@matthewfulkerson6449 no, he’s saying that the reason you do math is the adapter length changes the leverage point and affects the torque value. But if you place the adapter 90 degrees from the torque wrench handle, the point of leverage remains the same and you don’t have to perform any math to figure the appropriate torque value.

Just installed a criterion remage on my remington 700, 270 winchester. Got it from northland shooters. Had the action and bolt trued. It is shooting incredible. Sub moa with multiple loads. Its far more accurate than I am.
It took me 2.5 hours to complete the installation; no just kidding. Very easy! Here is a PLUS to Criterion barrel, the mark of an EXCELLENT barrel maker, is when I the shooter can clean up a barrel after about 100 rounds; it was a breeze. Plus the bore is beautiful. Savage 110 Tactical now 22" barrel in 308W pre-fit Savage barrel.
Minus the action vise, how much is the barrel nut wrench, go/no go gauges for a 300 win mag remage barrel I purchased from y'all?

Why on Earth would you shoot a Criterion barrel? Mine keeps throwing fliers resulting in .5" groups. I mean really out of an unbedded B&C M40 stock my Rem 700 in 300 Win Mag, it should shoot better....oh wait fliers with my 10X scope are my fault and those .3" & .4" groups are OK.....lol.... Can't have mine! Get your own! 4" steel @ 600 yards is to much fun even with the straight 10 scope. Gonna get one for my Savage.
How tight against the go gauge should you turn the barrel in? I put the PT&G bolt head on also. My bolt closes real stiff. Did I go too tight?
I like to feel the lugs of the bolt engaging inside the barrel extension as it is turned. So long as the go gauge is able to turn, you should be just fine. I frequently turn the bolt while applying forward pressure into the chamber to aid in feeling the tightness of the fit. Starting out with tight headspace is a good thing as head-space erosion takes place as the rifle is fired and parts wear in. Tight tolerances from the very beginning will ensure optimal chamber pressures and seating depths for the life of the barrel. Proper headspace goes a very long way in optimizing accuracy and reliability. If you have any other questions, feel free to email mike@criterionbarrels.com and we can discuss this process in detail.
I have a savage 220 and I'm putting a aftermarket barrel on it do I need to headspace it. I'm asking because it's a shotgun

I did lose an extractor and extractor spring in my process. I had a replacement kit on-hand from gunshack.com. Found my extractor but I need a tool magnet to reach it so I'm only out the spring which I'm still hoping to find.
Next time put your bolt inside a clear plastic bag while removing the ejector pin. The bag will capture the pin and/or spring.

Why do you recommend against using a barrel vise?
Was my thought as well. Never have had an issue with my barrel vise.
It's not so much of an issue with the newer actions, but Northland has found that some of the older Savage actions have a tendency to bind up using the barrel vise approach. A few NSS customers have cranked down on their actions with enough torque (due to this binding) that they have actually damaged the action itself.
Criterion Barrels, Inc. Understandable. Taking the factory barrel off is the hardest part. 50 ft lbs is really easy to hit and doesn't require much of a vise when putting on the new one. I have the Northland wrench, it's nice and stout.
@rusty nuts Take the gauge out so you do not damage the gauge or chamber. No need to turn your No Go gauge into the Go gauge for that rifle. 😆
It’s amazing how many “experts” have no clue how to use a torque wrench properly. It’s one thing if it’s some knucklehead out in his garage but, these guys are supposedly “professionals” at the factory.
What brand of gauges you recommend for this process?
I'd recommend either JGS or Pacific Tool & Gauge.

Is the operation of the same with your howa pre fit barrel?
The method of installation is similar, but the barrel nut design is a bit different (it requires a 31mm box wrench instead of a Savage barrel wrench).
Criterion Barrels, Inc. cool thanks, would you guys happen to have any Advice on breaking loose the factory howa barrel I heard it can be a little bit of a chore.
5 foot breaker bar/pipe, a 400 pound friend, really good penetration oil, and sadly a torch! Then when that don’t work take it to the gunsmith so he can do the exact same thing but 10 times more aggressive cause your afraid your going to break it in half!
Why not use a barrel vise?

How do you keep the recoil lug aligned with the new accufit Barrel recoil lug? There is no indexing protrusion to keep it aligned.
i put the lug on the action, then i made two wedges to keep the lug centered inside the notch of the wrench.
@@RangerCaptain11A What material did you make the wedges out of? Wood? metal? plastic? Also, please tell me what you used to remove the smooth barrel nut. I would greatly appreciate your advice.
@@jimenright318 i had some strips of pine and i whittled them down so they were equal, then i pushed them into the spaces between the lug and the notch for the lug in the action wrench. i bought my action wrench from amazon for $75. i bought a barrel nut wrench that has a smooth hole and it includes a thin brass strip so you can tighten the barrel nut wrench tight and have 360° of pressure on the nut. i know some shooters use a piece of leather to do the same thing.

before you attempt to loosen the barrel nut clean out the space between the nut and the barrel. if you don't clean the hidden threads you will have a hard time unthreading the nut through all the dirt trapped in there. the small square hole on the wrench is for a breaker bar for loosening, and a torque wrench when you tighten.
