Kims always been uber cool. He showed some of the signature elements of soundgardens sound. The ghostly feedback and those behind the saddle notes sound like melodic sledgehammers. Good stuff. Sounds good even today after 20 yeas.
This is awesome because until I saw this video, Kim Thayil was always this mysterious figure who just happened to compose the songs that changed the way I look at music forever. Watching him play those chords, man....jaw dropping
Bear in mind that they don't always play the studio tuning live. They've had to augment some songs tunings to accommodate either Chris's voice or equipment limitation.
Kim Thayil has really good taste in guitars. Just wanted to say that. Thought I had died and gone to heaven when they showed the S-100 with the natural finish.
I just found a 1990 Guild S100 used for $675 and the new ones are like $800. I like how Kim's guitar doesn't cost 5k. It's more about technique and sound than expensive wood and a fancy head stock. I like this band and Kim and Chris are two of my favroite guitarist. One day when I can afford it, I'll buy the guitar Chris used . But those babies are expensive.
Cost usually means nothing. Play a guitar before you buy it. Play lots of guitars. I have (wife says) too many guitars but one of the best purchases was 75 bucks for a Yamaha Pacifica that plays and sounds better than at least half of the other electrics I've plugged in. Those guild's are more versatile than an SG. Possibly better made as well.
Guild doesn’t have the name recognition, so you can find killer guitars for cheap. Those S series necks are the best that have ever been put on a guitar. Built better than Gibsons!

I love how Kim doesn't have a bunch of custom shop instruments. Just off the shelf with stock pickups. Totally in line with the DIY nature of the Grunge scene.
