That’s the difference between someone who plays guitar and loves playing it and someone that collects guitars and joins bands for getting hookers and blow. Tom Morello and guys of his skill could play a piece of firewood through a transistor radio and still make it shred.
This is incredible! Thank you so much for this. This is one hell of an artist, with lots of talent, tons of creativity and just so much charisma. This is such an inspiration, motivation, especially hearing his workout routine, how he approach things, how he creates his own world without listening to "you can't do that" kind of people. At this point I recognize that it was whether I had ideas or not that really mattered if I could do anything interesting. I’m also a photographer, and the same thing applies to my work. Run What Ya Brung.
Thanks PG! Chris handled the interview amazingly like he and Tom were old band mates. Best RRD to date guys! He and Bollinger seem to have the most insiteful questions. Glad to see the artist show chops during the rrd
Awyeah, finally! I saw Rage Against the Machine live when I was 15 in the summer of ’97. They were my favourite band at the time and a big part of my young life. The lyrics, the intensity and Morello’s awesome riffs and wacky solos, which sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before. After the concert me and some other kids waited outside their hotel, hoping to catch a glimpse of them and maybe get an autograph (if we were lucky) before they drove off to their next festival gig. Tom Morello saw us standing there when they left the hotel and came over to talk to us. He told us that he'd noticed us jumping around during the concert and asked us what we thought about the gig. After a while and some high fives and autographs, some people from their entourage told him to get on the bus. It seems like such a small thing and he didn’t have to do it, but when you’re young these things matter and make a big impression on you. I might not be a kid anymore, but he’s still an inspiration - I'll try not to buy more guitars! - and he seems like a great, down-to-earth guy.
That dude was (still is) my hero growing up! Always loves talking and playing guitar in all the interviews I have seen. Tom Morello for President. Thanks Tom!!!
man, i love how passionate, excited, and thoughtful he is e: like he’s explained the toggle killswitch thing in so many interviews and he explains it here as if it were the first time someone asked about it. wholesome
Tom Morello is possibly one of the most down to earth artists around full of genuine and unique dexterity. Never knew he was this much of an energetic guy 🤘🏽
I've been a fan of Tom since I saw him with Lockup at Cal State Northridge opening for an English act Desolation Angels. My friends band Lord were also on the bill. My friend and I were very impressed by his originality. Everyone including myself were trying to shred like Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch. Tom can shred with the best but is such and individual. Probably one of the smartest men in music if not the world. I also like to listen to Tom speak. I always come away with new knowledge.
He also plugs the effects chain through the effects loop of the amp, not a single tubescreamer, fuzz, just modulation and time based effects. Great pioneer and imaginative man, digitech owes him a lot... smart, creative, and a gentleman.
Love this guy ---- Harvard grad..........super smart dude. Rockstar god............but, comes across as the most humble / down to Earth dude on the planet. You are a monster guitar player Tom. Keep on rocking.....
Love Tom. A real guitarist’s guitarist. A lot of people don’t realize how good of a player he is because they hear the effects and think that’s all it is, when the effects don’t color his sound as much as his attack, timing and groove does. I read an article long ago where Dimebag himself made sort of a thinly veiled slight towards Rage and Tom - funny thing is it was either right before or around Far Beyond Driven... And what pedal was Dime using to get a lot of those nasty textures on that album...? I like to think at some point Dimebag acknowledged, and maybe he did, that he and Tom Morello had a lot more in common than he was willing to admit or hear for himself....
@@bucket303 yep and I'll bet you good money he never tried the phaser or wah in front of the amp. I'm guessing he read the inputs and outputs of his amp, went "oh so that's where the pedals go" and he was DONE.
On the first Rage record he had it in front of the amp. It sounds like a normal wah sound. From empire on, the tone changes to more of a filter effect you get from putting it in the FX loop.@@FrankHerfjord
Loved that. Tom's such a humble guy. I love your reaction to when he just starts playing this iconic riffs... Your face is how we all feel watching that.
It’s always appreciative when the artist themselves breakdown their gear. And let’s face it, no guitar tech was going to be able to take us through this rig except for morello himself.
I've always been more a fan of Tom Morello's approach and creativity than of his music, but this is one of the better rig rundowns I've seen. He's clearly a genius.
Love how Tom made a riff while on a lesson and then uses that to make the biggest song ever. Also, Tom’s Tape Recorder should be in a Museum for Musicians.
Finally!! i have waited for this forever.. now, i already knew all of this, but this was the one episode that i have been missing for a long time. only down part was it would have been more cool if it had been during the POR tour to feature more of his guitars. but anyway, thanks PG
Quite possibly the most interesting guitarist in music. The people that think he is over rated have probably never really listened to his music. A true innovator. I like how he didn't want to sound like other guitarist and made his own unique sound. He could afford to buy any piece of gear that he wants, but still uses the same setup for 30+ years.
I honestly love Tom’s playing, he’s one of the most badass guitarists I’ve ever heard and his sound is so damn innovative. Also, for those who want to hear some of his stuff with Springsteen I’ll suggest the song Ghost of Tom Joad; Rage covered it in the 90s but check out the rendition from Bruce’s _High Hopes_ album and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed
thank you TM for actually PLAYING and demonstrating your rig and sounds! it's so frustrating how many rundowns consist of the guest showing all the guitars and pedals and amps and never play a note. really enjoyed it. thanks

I love how u can tell he loves what he does. True passion for his art
I've heard him say It before, but the story of Tom just making do with his guitars, and amps. Not really giving a shit about what they're like Is very inspiring. I'm planning the next guitar purchase, and It's way too easy to over think the process. You can't be too precious about these things.
He said he did that after years of trying though. It's not like he just grabbed a guitar off the rack and sounded like that.
@@Vichedges what he said is that he gave up.
That’s the difference between someone who plays guitar and loves playing it and someone that collects guitars and joins bands for getting hookers and blow. Tom Morello and guys of his skill could play a piece of firewood through a transistor radio and still make it shred.
when he started rhythm scraping/scratching i instantly remembered how hard it was to beat that on guitar hero
That delay with the killswitch thing was the best thing i've heard Tom play. it wasn't just noise for the sake of it.
You can tell how much the interviewer is loving this just by the way he lights up when Tom starts playing. Very fun to watch!
This filled my soul with so much creativity.
He is living proof that there's always room for creativity and new things.
As Victor Wooten says... You can play wrong notes as long as it feels good...
Big bow and thank you. All the best for whole Premier Guitar, commenters, Tom.
Hearing that he wrote some of the heaviest RAGE riffs with the neck pickup of a tele?!?!?!? MIND BLOWN... Love this
He actually says that he wrote many of them on a nylon strung guitar that he has at home. (Both in this and a bunch of other interviews.)
I've been waiting for this since I subscribed years ago. Thank you so much Premier Guitar!
Same!!!

"Your strings will last forever" Tom Morello 2019
I hope Glenn Fricker doesn't see/hear that 😂
That will stick with me
"this is my sound, I'm gonna stop loosing time on it, these are my tools, now I'm going to work with them"... now this guy is my favourite guitar player.
I love the way he forced himself to quit fidgeting with his gear, and just make music. There have been times in my life when I had no money for gear, and times when I had a lot of money for gear. At this point I recognize that it was whether I had ideas or not that really mattered if I could do anything interesting. I’m also a photographer, and the same thing applies to my work.
Run What Ya Brung.
That’s a really cool concept to apply to every creative endeavour.
Love the fact that he has zero attitude. Very humble and took time to explain the elements of his sound in detail. You are a legend Tom.
the sound of his chain against the mic every time he turns his head is KILLING me
Is that what that is? Dammit, I thought my cable was shorting.
Thanks PG! Chris handled the interview amazingly like he and Tom were old band mates. Best RRD to date guys! He and Bollinger seem to have the most insiteful questions. Glad to see the artist show chops during the rrd
You can tell both are musicians and audiofiles
Tom Morello would make a great sports commentator
If we all were on coke and could keep up with him lol 👀
I have fond memories of this man destroying me in guitar hero 3 when I was 13

The interviewer's face when Tom plays his iconic riffs: the full gambit of human emotions.
Gamut.
"Fully stock...I just put some stickers on it..."
Tom Morello's first rule about playing guitar:
- play the guitar as high up your chest as you can
Its the bass moto!
Oposite of green day
If the guitar isn't tucked under your chin like a violin are you even raging properly?
@@neonlights_12 the proper way to play is holding it above your head. SMH beginners 🙄
man, i love how passionate, excited, and thoughtful he is
e: like he’s explained the toggle killswitch thing in so many interviews and he explains it here as if it were the first time someone asked about it. wholesome
Tom Morello is possibly one of the most down to earth artists around full of genuine and unique dexterity. Never knew he was this much of an energetic guy 🤘🏽
The fact that Tom did his own rig rundown is why we love him.
I always come away with new knowledge.
chris: says anything
tom: SURE!
strong coffee was it?
Colombian no doubt

Can you imagine if Perry was the interviewer, not Chris K?
This man is the G.O.A.T., and he’s one of my favorite guitarist ever
It’s so cool how he’s kept the same amp setup and sounds like him no matter what.
He also plugs the effects chain through the effects loop of the amp, not a single tubescreamer, fuzz, just modulation and time based effects. Great pioneer and imaginative man, digitech owes him a lot... smart, creative, and a gentleman.
18:05 guess Tom has a toggle switch on his voice too
Lol!!
holy crap that was hilarious....good catch
hahhaa damn!
"A lot of people don’t realize how good of a player he is" 00:25:43 yeah thats amazing.
hands down most entertaining rig rundown ever
He sounds like Rock-Obama
@Dr. Jack Kevorkian You'll never be remembered, unlike Tom Morello.
@Dr. Jack Kevorkian Hi. Why the dipshit username? Ashamed to be yourself?
They both went to Harvard.
@@marcpstl He took the fake name because all his friends and family committed suicide for knowing him.
after these last two years I take it smart people scare you
The look of amazement on his face as he realises how simple the setup actually is for all these iconic sounds.
One thing to note...ALL of those effects are in the FX LOOP of the amp.
I had a hunch that's what was going on, especially with how clean the delays sounded and how "nasally" the wah sounded.
What you mean by this?
HIs guitar goes into the front of the Marshall. All the pedals go into the FX Loop@@OniDasAlagoas
Tom is the man! Such a friendly, smart guy!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, so thankful for the rig rundowns where the artist plays/demonstrates instead of just talking the whole time
I'm really impressed with his austere rig. 2 guitars, the same 2 he's had since he started. The same amp head. The same pedals.
You hear Tom playing and you instantly know it's him. His sound is soo recognizable, he's just such a inspiration!! 🤘
This is the most interesting rig rundown so far. Thank you!
It’s always appreciative when the artist themselves breakdown their gear. And let’s face it, no guitar tech was going to be able to take us through this rig except for morello himself.
This is like a dream to me. Huge fan since forever
I've always been more a fan of Tom Morello's approach and creativity than of his music, but this is one of the better rig rundowns I've seen. He's clearly a genius.
22:14 The host is just frozen in time, mesmerized by Tom's genius playing
what song is that?
Tom is probably the most true to self guitar player. His style and chosen gears are just so different but then make a lot of sense!!
He speaks in music. It's fascinating to watch
Dito
Nice at the drive in t-shirt
vaya!
16:15 Argentina, best crowd ever! We love you Tom!
Looking back on this it just comes through of how cool and how nice Mr Morello is. 😎 Totally cool!!!!
I’m not the biggest fan of his music or politics, but he is a gentleman and a true musician. I respect the shit out of this man.
thank you TM for actually PLAYING and demonstrating your rig and sounds! it's so frustrating how many rundowns consist of the guest showing all the guitars and pedals and amps and never play a note. really enjoyed it. thanks
And that is how an Anarchist makes music and gives his time to share his knowledge.
His riffs are so good, he sends them out and people make music using them as a starting point.
Great Rig Rundown, been a big fan since the 90's.
Love this guy! If it wasn’t for Tom Morello I would had never picked up the guitar, and fast forward 20yrs later! I still love playing my Guitar out of all 7 instruments I play!! Keep rocking out and thank you for helping find my favorite instrument!!
I like how he holds is guitar high up on his body instead of down by his knees.
I love how enthusiastic he is about showing off his rig! He still clearly loves what he does.
holy shit 21:38 is a variation of an EVH riff but he made it his own. incredible to hear; i love hearing these guys influences bleed into their own style.
