  • David Grissom is one of the top American roots guitarists. His singular playing style and tone have garnered him multitudes of sessions, tours with acts from the Allman Brothers to John Mellencamp, and a long-running successful signature model from Paul Reed Smith Guitars. In our Truetone Lounge interview, Grissom takes us from his childhood in Kentucky and Indiana to the storied music hub he has called home for over 30-years, Austin, Texas. Along the way, David sheds light on his voracious appetite for music and the formidable work ethic that helped forge him into one of the most revered guitarists today.

Our band moved to Austin in 1985 - looking for a guitar player - and immediately pegged David as THE guy. Sadly for us, he was already on the train and pulling out of the station when we were still trying to buy tickets. David is such a talented and musical guy. This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard. What a story.

Totally, changed my life when I bought that cassette. Then I moved to Austin from Ny in '93. I actually met Joe Ely and ended up having breakfast at his house with a bunch of people and some Tibetan Monks. @@TruetoneFX I have been for years trying to copy that tone, but I have not succeeded. David has that edge on the sound, with a little distortion, but there is a lot of clarity on the notes. I generally get too muddy because I want to get a bit of sustain on the sound. When I clean up, I lose that edge and sustain.

When I heard David for the first time on the album with Get a leg up on it a tone bulb just shattered my brain. I loved Billy Gibbons, Malcolm Young, and was Really into EVH, Steve Vai with DLR. Reb Beach, the Guys from Tesla, Keoch and Hannon. Then I heard Grissom and it was like, this dude has it just right. Nice crunchy tone with just the right amount of thickness, yet not as saturated as the more open then the more metal guys. When he did those sweet Hendrixy neck things I was just drawn in. If I can ever get my single income family budget to afford a core instrument it will be the DGT. I've bastardized a few SE's to his wiring, and discovered the Duncan screamin demon (covered) is a real close cousin to his bridge pickup, it will be nice to have the real deal. Great episode!

Im towards the end now. Heard the line about inducting Guy Clark into Austin’s HOF. I know a true musician when they know Guy Clark.
I went and saw Rodney Crowell in Rocky Mount, Virginia at the Harvester theater. I was third row. At one point Rodney went on about “she’s crazy for leaving” and said he wrote the song with Guy Clark. The he said “Who is probably the best songwriter, ever!” Well, though I agree with him, one guy in the crowd didnt! Not for disliking Guy, but because he thought Rodney Crowell was the best. And he yelled “NO, YOURE THE BEST!” Rodney was so put a-back he paused and said, “You sound very assertive, so I wont disagree with you.”
At the end of the show he closed with Poncho and Lefty. A version so powerful it brought me to tears! Love your stories, hope mine made you smile!

Talked to his guitar tech for about 20 min before the storyville show.
It was a klon, a TC chorus, and a volume pedal into 2 50watt marshall plexi's and a Trace Elliott 4x12 and a PRS.
He handed me his pick after their last song.. I still have the signed cymbal, his pick, and one of Chris Laytons sticks..
His rig was dry and just sounded phenomenal. Meeting him, Chris and Tommy was such a big deal.

My gateway to Grissom was his work with James McMurtry, who I got into from his father Larry McMurtry who is a fine novelist. Good songwriters tend to read a lot of fiction, whether it's comic books, bestsellers, or the classics. All the band leaders Grissom worked with weave compelling narratives that verge on mythology. I'm looking forward to more solo recordings from the master of Americana, David Grissom.

Just got my PRS SE DGT Gold-Top with Moons a couple of weeks ago since placing my order in January on the 30th 2023!! So far it's the best guitar i've ever bought and have bought some great guitars!! $849.99 +tax and I'm freaking out of the Playability , Sound and Vibe it drips out endlessly!! First 2 weeks were playing here and there tweaking everything I could think of and replaying songs and slowly tweaking intonation, string height, neck adjust and over and over again and again!! Then I've used them on 2 gigs and at home tweaking a little until after the 2nd gig!! But that's just me!! But I'm 99% there now!! And still amazed!! I think anyone who is thinking of getting one should just do it!! Even if you think it's not you, if you keep it even 1 year you won't regret it! I'm really interested in his story because it's not only great but he wasn't given up even though some things fell through!! But I vote Yes!!!

This is a real Master Class from both sides of the coin.....David shares so much great info - a deep dive into so many things of great benefit to almost any player. But, Zac really knows how to make feel people feel comfortable with an easy-going conversational style that draws in his guest and the viewer. This is really a top-shelf session well worth your time. So much excellent information that you can put to use right away. Great stuff.....

Thank you David for mentioning the negativity and comparison, all of it is a waste. And for all your amazing work.

It's how I always dreamed of the life of the best guitarists... walk in short rehearsal and you're touring with the Allman Brothers

Could you imagine?!? That'd be insane. Hilariously, I'm sure you know, it was Zakk Wylde that didn't work out the night before they called David 🤣
