It's nice to see a video where the theme, the topic, is joy. A lot of the record collector type videos have a certain hubris to them, so it's great to come across someone who sees the music they are presenting as more than a possession, but as a part of their person.
The other great point here is that the sense of joy that our early musics gave us always endures in one form or the other and it's really, at the base of us, what drives us to find new musics. And it's a scalable argument - what worked for you in the mid 90's worked the same for me in the early 70's. We didn't have video games, but we did have "Hot Love" by T. Rex and it's the same anchor to my sense of wonder and understanding of where I'm, from as you describe Chrono Trigger being, for you. And the other thing you brought out, for me, is the ways that that first real contact with popular culture was the anchor for that outreach to try and connect with popular culture. By the late 70's when urge and capability sort of became equal, we all went out and formed punk bands in garages because, well, maybe I had some innate urge to be the recently deceased Marc Bolan. Who knows. Glammy Punk, Prog - both fruit, in this case, from the same genus of tree.
A great essay that really made me think. Thank you.

That's the best comment I ever read. I think. The video was great - I love Chrono Trigger, grew up with it, but to see what I went through with it has a wider meaning one that existed before, is really thought provoking. Its like a tribal memory being passed on.

      Thanks as always, Quince!
You're right that the music is a part of my person. I used to tell my students that we are the sum total of all of life experiences. Perhaps it's because I traffic so frequently in nostalgia, but it seems like music is often mixed into the mortar that holds me together.

Chrono Trigger certainly is an exemplar of what the medium of video games was capable of, even in it's relative infancy back in the mid-90's. There's a surprising amount of narrative complexity conveyed by pixels on a screen, and the emotional weight of the game owes so much to the music.
Sure it's just a video game, but I hadn't experienced anything like it. It's almost like it unlocked a bit of something inside of me that made me a little bit different than I was before, even if only in a very small way.
I think those are the tribal memories. The humanity that is passed from one generation to the next, with each person waking up to it (or not) in their own way. It's interesting to see the pieces of media that have been that for different people.

Great game, indeed! There are some rumors that it might be getting a remake, which might be bad. 😬

This is a very eloquent and obviously thoughtful video. I do appreciate it when creators put a sincere personal spin on things.

I just clicked "Buy It Now" on eBay and bought the Hero Variant myself about 30 seconds ago. I can't wait for it to get delivered!! Chrono Trigger holds such a special place in my heart. I remember renting this when I was in 4th grade and not being able to get by the Dragon Tank boss before I had to return it. And, I remember being captivated by the box art in the video store. I've played it many times throughout my life since then and it's certainly in my Top 5 favorite games ever made. Great video. Thank you!

Also, Magus is one of my all-time favorite characters in any medium. Such an interesting story arc.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This game is really special to me as well. I still think about this game often, and I just decided to give the PC port a shot for my next playthrough.

Follow Mana Wave Media on Twitter. I think it's pretty likely they'll press more copies of the record. It's a really faithful take on the Chrono Trigger music.

I'm also huge into RPG soundtracks as well as prog rock. I wonder if there is a connection between the genres because they are both telling epic stories.

My theory is that the great video game music composers of the 8-bit and 16-bit era were heavily influenced by prog rock and jazz fusion. The more epic the game, the more epic the music. The next generation grows up listening to video game music, not realizing that we're being primed to fall in love with progressive rock.

Hi O! Been a while since we've seen anything here. Hope everything is okay and going swell. I know I speak for a lot of people when I say I'd love to see your series back - so little thought-provoking stuff about these days! Anyhow, hope all is well and certainly in the unlikely event there's anything I can do to help things along, feel free to give me a shout.

Everything is going well in my world. I started a new job earlier this year, and the creative energy has been a bit low for me. I do plan to get back it at some point when I've got a bit of extra space in my brain.
