  • On September 5th of 2015 Jimmy Baird took out his home built steam speeder on the Walkersville Southern for a test run. As well as testing the speeder he also gave rides. This all happened to be the same day we took a trip out to the Walkersville Southern to film.
    In Walkersville Southern: To the North! you will see the other trains we filmed this day.

    Here in the US, railroads used speeders like that to inspect the quality/condition of the rails up and down the line. The really cool ones are the small-ish, home-built steam speeders that one can take out on various abandoned rail lines (which we apparently have a lot of).

    Pretty neat. That's very nearly a proper Grasshopper type loco, you should build some proper drawbars onto it and see how many little 2-axle wooden wagons it can pull, maybe with some bench seats in them for sightseers...

    That looks like a load of fun. It reminds me of the earliest UK locos. the Rainhill trials of1829.

      Your not too far off there. Jimmy Baird built this to resemble inspection cars that would have been out and about in the 1880s. This would also be about the size of the original Tom Thumb, the new replica at the B&O Railroad Museum being larger than the original.

    What the what?? This is amazing! Its both awesome and confusing! Is it a steam engine? Is it a speeder? It's both?!?! How does it run/work? What powers what?

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  9 лет назад

      +Big Jim Video Productions It is both. When I first saw it I described it as "The Tom Thumb meets a speeder." If I remember correctly a piston powers a wheel and that powers another wheel under the driver's seat finally going to a chain that powers the back axle.

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo 9 лет назад

      +Geared Productions That would be a fantastic piece to bring to other railroads for rides - especially some of the smaller ones that don't operate steam that often. Is that something that the owner is willing to do?

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  9 лет назад

      +Big Jim Video Productions He has taken it out to different railroads, but Walkersville Southern is the closest one and he does run it at a gathering in Maine. One fact to note is that where you see the people standing is where normally wood would be.

  • @PeaceyPraps

    I. WANT. ONE. That looks like so much fun! It's even got that classic steam locomotive exhaust sound, too!

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  8 лет назад +2

      +Zephyr4501 Yes, I noticed that too. I think it has to do with the piston size, since the piston makes the fire hotter with each stroke. Usually on steam speeders there is very small pistons.

    Anyone have technical details on this speeder? Looks like a VFT (vertical firetube) boiler supplying a simplex, double-acting steam engine, non-condensing but using exhaust steam for induced draft - just like a regular steam locomotive. The engine startup sounded like there are no cylinder condensate drains. Boiler probably generates saturated steam only; no superheating. Wonder if it could carry enough fuel and water for a whole day's run? Or if it could pull a tender? I'd love to fire the boiler and oil the engine.

    Is this abandoned track or are you part of the railroad company? How do you keep from being run over by regular trains?

    • @Geardproductions
      @Geardproductions  7 лет назад +2

      This piece of track is run by Walkersville Southern and they do excursions over the railroad. The two guys who own this speeder are apart of the railroad and know what's going on. Radios, slow speeds for the other trains, small trains and a passing siding keep the trains from colliding.
