  • Today I finally got to hear my Great Northern 7 chime whistle on steam. The whistle is a shop-built boiler tube 7 chime made by the Great Northern and used on their O-8 mikado, 3380, one of the most powerful mikados ever designed. The Walkersville Southern Railroad graciously allowed me to blow this whistle on their steam-powered maintenance-of-way vehicle. This whistle was designed to be used on a locomotive with a boiler pressure around 250 psi, so it doesn't sound quite right with the limited pressure from this smaller boiler, but getting to finally hear it make any noise was a great experience. I would still like to hear it on some higher pressure steam some day, but this was a great first test. We also tested out a crosby 3 chime reportedly off a Southern Railway locomotive. After our fun with the MOW vehicle, Jeddo Coal 85 powered the passenger trains for the day so I stuck around to watch. As noted in the video, 3 hands-on-the-throttle tickets remain as of the time I posted this video. There is one left for May 26th and two for June 2nd. Tickets are $175 and allow you to operate Jeddo Coal 85 for about 30 minutes. I had so much fun doing this at the NCTM back in 2020 that I have my own ticket for June 2nd. If you're at least 18 and have a valid driver's license, I highly encourage you to consider making the trip to the Walkersville Southern Railroad on one of those dates, but definitely purchase your ticket in advanced before they sell out. If you're unable to purchase the throttle session ticket, 85 will still be leading the passenger trains for a couple weekends so still come out and ride behind a genuine steam locomotive. I love that maintenance away engine I think it’s a gypsy type logging locomotive I didn’t know there were more operating examples besides bear Harbor lumber Company number 1 in California which operates alongside the Fowker steam locomotive

That poor seven-chime whistle sounds asthmatic.

Where on earth did you find that whistle, and are there any markings on it anywhere that confirm's it's 3380's? because some other O-8's had boilertube whistles, but most had the GN 5 chime.
