    Great trip and an awesome hobby. Didn't care much for the siren and light bar though. Seemed to detract from the authenticity of the car, and would have aggravated me if I were riding on the fabulous trip. Thanks for sharing this really great video!

      Seemed out of place for a historical motorcar, and frankly thought it was a bit obnoxious 🙄

    That speeder with the siren though. I can imagine a possible scenario:
    Track speed: 30 mph
    Train: runs through at 35 mph
    Speeder with siren: gives train a speeding ticket

    At 16:51 the freight train is watering the tracks. Trains on that railroad always did that when going through the forest.

      That's one of the reasons why the railroad companies stopped using them, and had them replaced with the railroad riding cars and trucks.
      They were uncomfortable and there were other problems with them.

    What doe,s the Steam unit in Garabaldi, BC have to do with speeder rides in Oregon 🤔

    • @mrksvideos
      @mrksvideos  3 года назад +1

      You might want to check, there may be more than one Garibaldi in the world. The title "POTB Speeder trip parts 10 & 11 - Buxton - Tillamook - Buxton" indicates it was on the POTB (Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad and not the former BCRail), contained more than one part, and that the trip was fro Buxton (Oregon) to Tillamook (Oregon) back to Buxton (Oregon).

    It must be really challenging to turn the speeders around to go in the opposite direction!

    • @railtrolley
      @railtrolley 5 лет назад +2

      Not so bad. They have timber handles in the seating part of the speeder. These are pulled out for maximum leverage. One end is then lifted - like a wheelbarrow, and turn the speeder 180 degrees. This is usually done at a level crossing -where the ground is level with the rails. That way, if you slip and drop the handles, it won't be too hard to continue turning the speeder. I have never actually done this as the speeder types I have driven (Victorian Railways 8W and 6W type) have a reversing gearbox, and can go at the same speed in either direction. And the motor is air cooled, so it does not need air running through a water condenser.

    • @jamessimmons1888
      @jamessimmons1888 3 года назад

      A lot of people that have speeders install a turntable that is raised and lowered. Just drop it down and slightly lift the car in the middle off the rails and then spin the car around and lower it back and secure the turntable back up. Then off you go in the opposite direction.

      The lines we have that actually go anywhere (that you'd want to go) and haven't been turned into steam preservation lines are generally far too busy. Plus we never really had much in the way of speeder type inspection vehicles, about the closest we got was regular pickups modded with a flip-down set of rail wheels, all line inspection is normally done with a regular loco plus inspection carriage combo.

    What is the purpose of the red flag? tell the guys behind that you are stopping?

    • @mrksvideos
      @mrksvideos  Год назад

      Yes, kinda old school. My car has brake lights but were still required to throw the flag out. We all drive our road vehicles to the speeder events, and none of us throw out a flag to the autos behind us indicating were stopping.
