No matter her size or what she was going through, Ms. Phyllis was always so elegant, classy, articulate, & personable. She was absolutely beautiful, I wish I could've met her & seen her perform live RIP Queen🕊
YOU ARE SO RIGHT. AND SHE IS SUPER FUNNY.
Articulate? I HATE when people say that. Why wouldnt she be?
Monique Brown my mother and I saw,her at wolftrap in Vienna VA...i think it was 1 year before she passed.....she talked about her depression on stage and wasn't as glamorous as we normally see...her voice was untouchable but it was hard to see her like that..rip
She was gorgeous, funny, and talented and her weight was irrelevant. Sometimes antidepressants and depression itself can cause this and if she were a man, this wouldn't have been an issue
@@lisasangria1086 You should have kept that to yourself....you were blessed enough to see her in person...you sharing that in itself would have sufficed.
She had the most beautiful eyes to me 😌
Bold & beautiful 🤩
@looking like shredder is the new style in 2021 Sure am 😊.
And lips and voice (talking and singing) 😍.
She has bedroom eyes. With nice dark lush eyelashes and she has the most beautiful plump lips to complement her beautiful eyes.
I’m just learning about Phyllis Hyman, but her eyes are captivating. She was so beautiful 😮😻🔥
I remember 6-30-95 the day Phyllis Hyman passed. I was in Harlem & she was suppose to perform @ the Appollo theatre. I was 3 blocks away hanging with some friends infront of a friends brownstone talking. A radio was playing on 97.8 kiss fm. When adruptly an announcement came on. We're sorry to interupt this program. R&B soul singer Phyllis Hyman has died of an apparent suicide. In her down town New York apartment. Within a second the conversation went silenced. There was a moment of silence on the radio & between me & my group of friends. Young & old we all was touched by her angelic voice. That night I went home & listen to every recording I had of her. Watch every vhs recording of her. Ran out to purchase her last studio album. To this day Phyllis Hyman remains a legend in her on right & in my ❤. Her songs told the story my life, her own & so many others. Ever miss, never forgotten.
Corey Lewis wow in 1995 life was diffrent then huh? i was born in 1990
I was born in 90 too... the 90’s was different!
There is no match to Phyllis Hyman. She was amazing, classy everything you said. I cried that June 30th 1995 when the radio station made the announcement. Same as I did with Barry White's passing. She touched your soul when she sang. The closest I see to her modern day image is Michelle Obama. Class 100% Thank you for posting this Mr. Lewis.
Blackheart Bev wow
what happened to her¿
That's Phyllis, weight gain or no weight gain she was still as gorgeous and beautiful as ever. She looked so happy and content.....who knew that in a year she would choose to leave us. I miss her so much.😔😔😔
Yes she was so amazing such a classy beautiful elegant pretty woman
@@barbie4170 I'm so glad somebody knows it. Watch out Jennifer Hudson!
@@barbie4170 Yes! I can see that. That industry is wicked. Whitney really hurt because I loved her since childhood.
@@barbie4170 Stupid as fuq conspiracy theory. Drugs. Period.
@@barbie4170 Tamar wishes Clive would include her in his lair.
I have always marveled at how Phyllis could suddenly go from talking to singing and be in perfect pitch... what a talent.
Whitney could do it. Mariah. Deborah Cox. Tamia. Aretha could. Chaka. Vesta. Lots of real singers can.
She sure knew how to dress!!!
Klion Smith yes she did beautiful and elegant!!!
Yeah her outfit was stunning! 😍

I saw/spoke to Phyllis Hyman the night before she committed suicide. We talked about how she remembered me from years ago. I gave her a big hug and told her I love you. I said to my friends that night something is seriously wrong with her. I felt in my heart that would be the last time I would see her. And I was right! God Bless you Phyllis. Thank you for all the beautiful music and wonderful encouragement to be who I want to be... RIP
😢😭😢😭😢😭😢! Rip beautiful queen.
How did you know that
How did you know something was wrong?
instincts, gut feelings are never wrong & some ppl are emphatic.. they can feel literally everything without someone telling them anything.
§ 🔴 she was a personal friend of mine and she saved my life made me promise when I went to LA that I wouldn't get involved with certain people I went I survived and I've made it through to this day because her if I had not have listening I will be dead! Rest in heaven Phyllis Hyman... I know exactly what you told me and would never say you committed suicide! You and your Protege Whitney Houston were murdered the same way Hotel parties still lit! Disrespectful
she was so beautiful
Yes, she was... inside and out.. RIP my sister.
When you see today's singers, They can't hold a candle to this lady,I had the pleasure of seeing her live twice,INCREDIBLE.
Candle? Man,please... They can't even swipe a piece of wax from that same candle.
DermDZL1 yeah
EXACTLY!!!
So true. She was amazing. I also met her twice in NY. I convinced her to attend & sing at one of my youth concerts in Queens NY. I sent a limousine to pick her up. We gave her flowers & she loved them. I regret not keeping in touch with her.
Stop. We have great singers in every era. And I’m old! Maybe you just don’t know any of them.
No one and I mean no one today even comes close to her singing.....she was one of the Greatest!!
I. DON'T WANT TO MAKE YOU ANY SADER. BUT PATTI CAN. EVEN THO PHYLLIS CAN SING.
@@meemeethecat7391 What's sader?
I respect the older singers. They had soo much grace and humbleness about them.
What a beauty. ..truly a loss. ..I hate that her depression won the war.
serious "they" could have killed her. You know they despise her type of African American.
Man she was killed.
She didn't kill herself I don't believe that. I believe her and Clive couldn't make it work because she had a mind of her own he couldn't control her, so he bumped her off for Whitney at that time Whitney was brand new 19 Phyllis just a tad older but still creme of the crop.
That industry especially concerning blacks they want TOTAL control much like slavery.
Don't believe the report first thing it's not true. I think she was having difficulty in her career choices but they always say these people are depressed, bipolar, schizophrenic it's a lie.
I can't imagine the impossible monsters they all face, that's why most don't make it to the top they all have to compromise and dive into deep darkness.
I have a question... Does anybody believe that anybody kills themselves anymore? Every time I come across someone famous who supposedly died by the hands of suicide, I get all kinds of comments saying that the person didn't kill themselves.
@@serious7179 it's a legit question but for me no I usually don't believe because Hollywood is all smoke screen and mirrors our government too.
Do some research and you'll see, as I have and have actually known someone in those societys.
They have to compromise themselves in ways that to the "normal" human would seem unthinkable. They like to do everything by the numbers.
Just as surely as Christ gave his life for others to be saved (sacrificed). The satanic Hollywood requires by way of Satan sacrifices for the wealth and prosperity of the celebrity. This is for a short period of time it's a contract and eventually Satan comes to collect. Check out James brown who literally did a commercial seeking Satan to renew his contract and get "more time".
Bob Dylan interview was dead serious when he said he sold his soul to write and play like he did and get rich and said he's "holding up his end of the bargain with the El Capitan in this world and OTHER world's" meaning the unseen spiritual world.
Is it possible people have killed themselves? Yes, however based upon the knowledge I've received in that world it's unlikely for most.
Don't take my word for it seek it out yourself there's information everywhere.
I can't believe that the interviewer didn't get that she was in the midst of a phenomenal presence!
Pollyanna Light the interviewer acted as if she didn't know who MS.HYMAN was ,do your home work!!!
Sad, that interviewer didn't know about Phyllis' acting career, she didn't do her homework!😔
The inflicted people are so blessed with unique talents. How I wish she could have seen her own worth. The mind is a fragile instrument, with eyes of its own.
Paula Young So well spoken..👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯
Well said
What a cliche! Inflicted people are no more talented than anyone else. You don't have to be tragic to create magic.
Why is everything SELF worth problem cure-all for every one? Not mad I just want us to think before we rereregirgitate this psyche lingo. Self esteem doesn't work or fix anything that's why the powers that be feed us that nonsense all day. Are us BLK wmn in disarray cause self esteem? Or is it set up that way before birth. Could it be our group is against i and holds is in a low esteem. Could it be we don't have race a culture or community to work it. At which point is a human communal being supposed to break?????? And self esteem be blamed. We are literally unlike anyone else on the planet told to function spiritual ly with no arms or legs The kind of help we need can't be found in self esteem, nor psychiatry or help. There is nothing innate about women that makes them predominantly inherantly damaged. Then problem is the outside it's more necessary that the inside.
@@IRepeatEverythingTimes creative people are often very tormented because of the strength of their imagination. It can create good and it can create bad. You obviously don't know.
God, she is amazing. I worked in the industry and met her at a huge convention-size party for the company BMG not long before she died - in the midst of what seemed like a thousand people, she was sitting alone at a cocktail table, looking so regal and beautiful, yet so sad. I went over to her and I told her how much I admired her and loved her music, and how gorgeous she looked that night. I'm so glad I got that chance because they don't make real ladies with real talent like that anymore. Heaven got an angel with an angelic voice when she passed.
I find it strange she was at a table alone. Her friends always speak of her holding court and personable with everyone.
Awww 🥺💖that’s so sweet. Just by being nice to someone could help uplift a bit more. Never know what someone is going through
I love you for life Ms. Phyllis Hyman. This is my favorite song of yours. It touches my spirit. You touch my spirit. Your music is so personal to me. You were a beautiful person (inside and out). I wish I could have met you and had personal conversations. Rest eternally. I pray I can meet you in heaven one day. You didn’t deserve to ever feel lonely, however our Savior is protecting you now! Jazmine Sullivan would be perfect for a movie about her life! RIP 👑
You may've hit the nail on the head with this one. Jazmine would have to dial down all of the vocal acrobatics, but her smoky tone and look are closer to Phyllis' than any other contender.
Yes!
You've got a point!I can see that too!If they can't find an impressive newbie, Jazmine would be the only established artist that would work!

Jazmine reminds me of so much of Phyllis in this current time.
RIP Phyllis and Billy, you both are dearly missed.
A lot of women don’t have class like this in today’s society
So true
What a talented woman. She was truly underrated. I remember an interview on Video Soul in which she talked about the music industry and how some artists who in her words, "Can't sing a lick" are promoted and successful while she struggled. The more things change the more they stay the same.
She was talented indeed. And I've actually uploaded that interview you're talking about. It was on Video LP.
K Ford Thanks. I forgot about Video LP.
Clive Davis was the reason why her career was stalled. She refused to do as told. Clive had his vision of how he wanted to promote her career. They clashed. He owned her career and crashed it at will.
Danny Tennial he was also connected with Whitney Houston and she's gone too. Something about him and the rest of hollyweird do their best to use the shit out of people!!!
Clive Davis is a fucken demon 👹! I hate him😠 ! He can't get no uglier👺, the son of a fucken alien👽. How old is this piece of komono dragon shit💩 any way? 1000 - 2000 years old 😞? I love Ms. Phyllis Hyman that last album 💿 she did I Refuse To Be Lonely really does something to me… It was phenomenal but you can tell she was in a lot of pain crying out for help. Her inner demons was something she couldn’t overcome & mental illness is a serious thing. I battle with Clinical Depression /Anxiety so I know her story all too well.

I love looking at black women in those days because they were sooo beautiful WITH THEIR OWN HAIR! Just look at that beautiful black women hair! True beauty
wtf are you talking about? It's the same as today. Just like how Whitney and many others wore those bad wigs back then so do people today.
Raythell Jordan please shut up no one polices any other group of women about hair. Other women wear weaves ok. Why is a man worried so much about how women choose to present themselves?
I agree
Black female entertainers have always worn wigs. Phyllis sometimes wore them too. The same holds true for women of other races.
@@IRepeatEverythingTimes I love BLACK women own hair!
She is and was my all time favorite. Looking at her, I can see that her thyroid is enlarged. So sad that they missed that. Perhaps with treatment , she would still be here today. R.I.P.
Tiffany Lott I saw that
I wondered about her neck.
Yes, you are right...that is the plight of us black folk, having inadequate medical care and needlessly dying because of misdiagnosed illnesses that underline our premature deaths....
I noticed her thyroid as well. Two great people!!!
When they released a documentary about her,her sister stated that today she would have been diagnosed as bipolar. She didn't like to take the meds she was prescribed because she thought it would mess with her muse.
The commentator is Debra Duncan. Well known talk show host and journalist in the Houston area. I didn't realize that she interviewed Phyllis Hyman this early on. Nice.

My Girl, voice hoarse and all and She still sung soooo Beautifully👸🏽🖤🔥💯!!!
It's 2020 and sadly I'm still missing her😣
I was a little girl when my parents would listen to her music. I would dance my butt off. She is a hit in our home forever and ever. Beautiful lady⭐
As one who has heard everything she sang, with an entire collection of Phyllis gems in my music library, my daughters used to say they worry about me listening to her music. They say her songs are mostly sad. But I contend that her music across the board invokes all emotional levels, happy and sad. Mostly though it is nostalgic music that reminds us of the time when a singers true gift, their voice, was the key to unlocking all emotion. I could listen to her music, anytime, anywhere and will always fondly recall the many concerts hearing her sing live. Especially at a small, intimate setting "Mchale's" in NYC. She was singing right in front of me... to me!
The way she phrased her vocals you can tell there was pain there.
Her music saved our butts in modeling school. What a gifted woman.😇
ONE THING FOR SURE ALSO, SHE KNEW HOW TO STYLE IT UP IN THE 90S!! I WAS 13 YEARS OLD IN 1994....GOOD OLE DAYS GROWING UP AS A TEEN IN THAT ERA! SO FUN!!
I'm just sitting here in tears. Two legends gone. Gone way too soon.

I like how Billy and the host moved off stage to allow her to sing to us so gracefully. Tastefully done Ms. Phyllis, you are missed.
Such a beautiful and graceful soul who battled so many internal demons. I hope you’re finally at rest Empress💫
"Living all alone" "Do for love (tried everything but you don't give love)" and now this "I refuse to be lonely" the woman was terribly lonely on her own and these songs were a cry for help. I even saw her on an interview once saying how she thought she'd be married with kids by now but it hasn't happened and she looked really sad when saying it. Some people just can't handle being lonely and so maybe that's why she killed herself, that's just my theory.

This song was a final cry for help. She sung to endure the depression and loneliness. She was pytting up a front. I heard the deep pain in her voice. I cant believe no one reached out to help her. The host was clueless.
Rest in peace to both of them. Man, two R&B Legends.
The texture and richness of her voice is unmatched!

Far too underrated and unappreciated. Love her. RIP Queen
You cld see how tired she'd become of everything. She was done ... RIP
wat u mean?
Angle Johnson ...she means her depression about life was evident.
+Danny Tennial wow why was she so depressed so sad
Angel Johnon ...she signed to a record label. Clive Davis. She had zero control over her name, life, music career. She didn't get along with Clive Davis, her handler at all. Like Gordy did to Florence Ballard he sabotaged her career. She did interviews during the early 90s openly criticizing the movers and shakers control over singers. Like Late Supreme Florence Ballard she found herself against a powerful machine that devours the artists it uses. She was on Ebony/Jet showcase, Arsenio Hall and various shows openly sharing her depression and distaste for the music industry machine.
Danny Tennial so sad she took her own life!!!
Weather it was drugs, depression or both mixed with a bit of something else to me at least (At Least) it seems by this time around she was very tired and not as happy, spunky, and more of a glow just a few years earlier like 91' and especially maybe 86' still beautiful woman and she still remains one of the most underrated vocalist of all time 💯💯💯💯💯

These videos of her in the 90's right before she died are chilling to watch. At this point, she's out of rehab again, refuses to go back, gained even more weight and was isolating from her family. Her story is tragic but such a beautifully gifted woman none the less. Rest in power Queen 👑

Hard to watch. There's a pain no drug or amount of love can fix. Phyllis Hyman is/was one of the best. Period
An outstanding representation of her amazing, multi-faceted gift. My late Mother introduced me to Ms. Hyman's music, and apparently I was present at a wedding she sang at when I was 2 or 3. I truly wish I could go back in time.
Also, she is representative of a bygone era when there was substance and depth and soul in R&B music. Oh, to re-live those days again.
Two of my favorite singers! Phyllis was phenomenal. It's too bad she didn't know how much she was loved and would be missed. She was a stunning beauty. It makes you feel like you just wanted to be the one to talk to her. You just wanted to save her...

There will never be another Phyllis Hyman
So hard to watch this because it was only 1 year later that Phyllis took her life. She was just so tired and would eat for comfort when depressed. In this video, this is a reflection (beautiful no matter what size) but just saying that she was an emotional eater. My heart breaks that she felt so alone and so tired of the same ‘ole, same ‘ole. 😔💔
I picked up that too...I think her weight gain in those latter years were a direct result of her depression. I also watched another video she mentioned that her remote control was like her best friend. Those are clear signs of a person crying out for help. Such a tragic loss of a beautiful soul. ☹
