Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 - June 30, 1995) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Hyman is best known for her music during the late 1970s through the early 1990s, some of her most notable songs were "You Know How to Love Me" (1979), "Living All Alone" (1986) and "Don't Wanna Change the World" (1991). Hyman also performed on Broadway in the 1981 musical based on the music of Duke Ellington, Sophisticated Ladies, which ran from 1981 until 1983. The musical earned her a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.
Hyman had suffered from bipolar disorder for years, having been diagnosed in the 1980s. She often self-medicated with alcohol and drugs, and frequently spoke about suicide. On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, a week before her 46th birthday, Hyman committed suicide by overdosing on a mixture of Tuinal and vodka in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. She was found unconscious at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) and died at 3:50 p.m. at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital (now Mount Sinai West) hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater. Her suicide note read in part:
I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you.

My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting her in DC and was invited backstage after her show. She was funny and didn't treat us like fans but like friends. I still remember the day I told my wife she passed and the pain we felt.
Wow 🖤What a wonderful memory
I loved her music, she sung from way down DEEP!!! There will never be another singer like her, she is missed!!!
It's so important to share such precious stories of this kind and I thank u for doing just that about such an incredible woman.🙏🏽🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏻🙏🏿🙏
that is so wonderful to hear about Phyllis I always heard she had a wonderful sense of humor about her and she was so beautiful pretty and from what I hear, and they say she was very down to earth with all of her fans, she was a very special lady, I will be glad when they do a movie story on her life, but the truth, the truth, not lies and rumor, I love her music and we all love phyllis Hyman and I'm glad to hear you had the opportunity to meet phyllis, thank you for sharing that with us and you and your wife have a wonderful day and be well.
R.I.P. there will never be a talent as poignant or pleasurable. You are surely missed and never forgotten.
I was privileged to see her in concert when she came to London🇬🇧 back in the 80s..l wonder what happened to all those beautiful outfits she wore on stage??? RIP Ms Hymen🌹🎵🎤
she was extremely talented RIP Phyllis Hyman
Listening to Phyllis Hyman is like tasting the most decadent cake in the world. It's so rich and vibrant that you have to step back and just think to yourself "What in the world is in this cake?" ---- She was the complete culmination of all black musical influences and culture. Definitely one of the most important and under appreciated black artist of all time --- period!!... But of course all the real ones get it. When you come across a fellow Phyllis Hyman fan -- your like "Oh yeah -- you totally get what life is all about!!"
Her music is like fine wine.Mellow. 🎤 🎵
One of a kind irreplaceable.
Absolutely👏🏾
I saw her twice live and in the front row. I was mesmerized by her phenomenal voice and statuesque person. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I also couldn't believe she had died. She was sensational.
I listen to her every day !
phyllis Hyman is one of kind. Great performance
Il
I love Phyllis Hyman
@@lewisbarnes9446 always & still❤️❤️❤️
One of my favorite artists! I miss her music so much. Just wish she knew how much she was loved. 😢
100% She was soooo loved 🙏🏾
I totally agree Phyllis is one of my favorite singers. The first time I saw her was at the Virginia Beach Jazz festival . She was Amazing .
Had the audience in the Palm of her hands. Not to mention she was absolutely gorgeous ! Sadly like alot of our great artists she was gone too soon.. Today , July 06 is her birthday
And so let's celebrate this Great Vocalist , the PH Factor
Phyllis Hyman
I met Ms. Hyman in D.C. at work. She was with her entourage and asked me for information. She was magical, polite, respectful, and any other positive adjective you can think of. That was an unforgettable moment for me.
This is how all concerts should be.
One can't say enough about her. When I heard of her death by suicide; was at first shocked; then sad then angry because I knew there would be no more music coming from this gifted person. I saw her in performance twice: A great disappointment in Baltimore then an over-the-toppe performance at the Carter Baron in DC. I wish she had performed some Ellington compositions that evening. She could sing country and western and blow it out the place. Loved her from a distance; but it was still-love.

One of my favorite artists and such an underrated talent. Gone way too soon. Her gifts are all the more meaningful with what she must have been going through. RIP Ms Hyman

Old friend hits me everytime 😢😢😢
Always.
Giving me life right now
Absolutely amazing
I first saw Phyllis Hyman when she replaced Natalie Cole at The Star Plaza in Indiana and I immediately became a fan. I saw her just about every time she came to Chicago. I absolutely love her music.
LOVE this rare concert footage from the late great Phyllis Hyman. What an amazing talent she was!
I can watch this special over and over! 🥰🖤
I have!!!❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏
She knew how 2 distance that mic like no other
Didn't she know how to use that mic? Smart and natural songstress. I know so many dudes had crushes, and just loved her. Appeal is what she had. Her eyes.
She, Luther vandross and Nancy Wilson
A very talented spirit manifested in the flesh...RIP
My favorite all time female singer. 🙏🏾🌻
You have great taste 💖
100% The Grand Diva 👑🎵🖤
@@HoneyHoneyBaby you too 🌹💃🏾
Born in '83. Discovered her truly while in college (and finally recognized her in "School Daze"). Read up on her and had my heart broken. Hurts to know that she was in such pain and that she left in such a hurry. Criminally underrated and neglected in her legacy. More people should know her like they know Patti or Whitney. She knew how to love us even if we didn't know how to love her back.
🙏🏾🙏🏻🙏🏿🙏🏼🤜🤛
thank you ....beutiful trubute to her....thank you ....and yes three women with distinctive , beautiful and unique gifts .....yes yes yes.....YES ...i feel so blessed to have known her!!!!
GRATEFUL.

Ya don't you wish you could of been there to save her.I do.
Born in 1983, great post!
Only the greatest will spark ⚡️ up your soul.
So sad she passed away. She was beautiful and super talented.
Suicide "in the prime of her life"😪
@@nanchanger that damn "record" industry can tear you down.😖😖
@@tracyskins7854 that wasn't why...
@@nanchanger I believe that was part of it.shr wasn't happy how "Clive" & them sort of pushed her aside.(and yes,I know bout the vices & bi-polar)
@@tracyskins7854 I believe her issue was much more personal than professional... She was stunning to look at, met at the Blue Night at one of the nights with Ray Charles performing...
Her voice was melodic and that is an understatement. Such an amazing talent. She is truly missed.
Old friend so nice to hear you once again.
This is my first time hearing this from Phyllis why she was taking. " She could not live with out her friend. " So sorry he left her and she could not live out him ". " May they both r.i.p. SHE WAS MY FAVIORET SINGER ". HER BEST FRIEND And I can't bring his name up. " It's tells she loved him as her very best friend ". I as a fan loved her very much and it breaks my heart. " WHEN YOU LOVE SOME ONE DEEP THE WORLD OR FAMILY CAN'T SAY OR DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. " I MISS YOU PHYLLIS ". ❤❤ LOVED YA LADIE. " MUSIC WILL ALL PLAY IN MY BOOK - MEMMIRES. BISGEST EVER FAN !
Thank you for uploading this wonderful concert of the unforgettable Phyllis Hyman!

R.I.P. sistah!!🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I couldn't of said it better.👏👏👏
She is so special, she is worthy of so much more attention and love.
UHHH, YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU KINDLY.
I love how influenced she was by Nancy Wilson, her performance style and phrasing is right out of Nancy's book. Phyllis is also a great example that not all amazing singers come strictly from the church.
100% agree
You're right, the singer Chaka Khan is not from church.
most do ...yes .....MOST
Yes she has a similar phrasing and style like Nancy Wilson. And sounds terrific
I saw her live at Blues Alley in the early 90s! What a great show! RIP my love🕊
Beautiful
Another outstanding talent from Pittsburgh, PA.
What a treat 💚 The only and only Ms. Phyllis Hyman 🎙️👑👸🏽 Thanks for sharing 💯🙌🏽💖
Loved this concert.👏👏👏
There are many singers that dont sound worth 2cent live,
SHE WAS NOT 1 OF THOSE,
most definitely a very beautiful
talent that as a fan wishing she
was still around for sure.
Maaan , when she sang "Living All alone" that put a real soothing to my soul.!!! The Voice of : PLYLLIS HYMAN is a masterpiece by it self... One of the best I've ever heard.!!! Dear GOD , rest her soul & bless her family & fans.!!! ✊🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🇺🇸♠☝😍 if i could bring back to life 10 singers ; one of them would have to be Ms Hyman.!!!
Me and (4) of my friends had tickets to see her at the Apollo the day it happened. We were heart broken. Will always miss you Phyllis Hyman 🙏🏽💜🤗
Do you still have your concert ticket from her final concert? I saw Phyllis in concert some years before she passed and I'm so glad I kept my ticket. I tucked it inside an old Jet Magazine with her on the cover.

When I saw Ray Charles at the Blue Note in NYC she walked into the room with a blue dress and was absolutely stunning...
Damn I'm jealous she was gorgeous
I saw her at the Blue note in 1986
I am so glad my mom made me listen to Phyllis Hyman she was truly amazing and her life was so sad. She truly deserved better, it wasn’t her time to go yet, she had so much talent to offer. 😔

Right?! Hard to believe, but she would turn 72 next month if only she had fought on to keep living. RIP Phyllis Linda Hyman
Phyllis Hyman is performing, and Phyllis Hyman has been performing right before her death in 1995! Phyllis Hyman’s legacy is going to continue to inspire her fans as well

I had pleasure of seeing Phyllis perform at Constitutional Hall and Carter Barron in DC. Missing her.
Thank you so much for posting this. Phyllis Hyman was prolific singer and I find it disturbing that there is so little of her on the web. This was a great surprise!!!!
So Fabulous, miss her dearly.
I saw her at the Circle Star in San Francisco a very classy lady. Gone to soon.🌹❤️
She got that far
She should have known she made it. . .she was loved by so many. Her talent was authentic.
Loved her collaboration with Norman Connors on You Are My Starship. What a voice. I still have her first album... in vinyl!
Thanks this woman sings the songs with big feelings 💓💕👬🌻🌹🌎🌍🌏🌒😊😊😊😊😊😊😊The One and only

MISS THAT INSTRUMENT OF A VOICE SHE WAS ONE TALENTED WOMAN
Brings back great memories. No one had her earthy sexy smoky sound. When she was singing at her best, the rest of the world simply dissolved. Hope there are more concerts out there.

What a wonderful Lady and Singer. Me and my wife got to hang out with her in Blues Alley in Washington DC shortly before she passed. We were blown away because to me Noone sang better than her . R.I.P.. You will never be forgotten by me and that's for sure.
A "RARE" GEM; A "TRUE" HUMAN BEING!!!! MANY ARTIST "AREN'T" WHO FANS BELIEVE THEY ARE!!!!! SAD, BUT, TRUE!!!!! BUT MY FRIEND PHYLLIS WAS "EVERYTHING AND MORE"!!!! SO GENUINE, LOVING AND UNPRETENTIOUS!!!!! MANY ARTISTS NEED TO TAKE "NOTE" FROM HER BECAUSE IF PEOPLE KNEW HOW YOU REALLY ARE"; YOU WOULDN'T HAVE A CAREER!!!!
Great Artist!!!
She didn't know how loved she was! ❤️
THANK YOU!!!!!!
MY ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FEMALE SINGER OTHERS CAN COME CLOSE 2ND I LOVE THEM ALL.
I don’t know why but in 8:48 when she sings that part and says “let me give you all my love” that love part is so breathtaking because, I think about all the things she has went through and it’s sad. But when Leo lord is playing that base is something else 😅
An angel voice among us
