It bewilders me that she didnt think she was good enough. Her voice stands alone in a category all HER OWN!!Didnt think she was beautiful enough??? She was drop dead gorgeous!!! We often appear confident but are dying inside.....she was dying inside.
@Out Of Darkness what’s wild is that she was ABOVE average in looks. I don’t know why she felt this way. She was stunning. Could’ve been a model if she wasn’t already talented
Many great musician and artists have that point of view of themselves. It's very complicated. But it serves to keep the challenges and never hitting a plateau and resting in a place of comfort if you will. Once they get comfortable it's over. Prince , Isaac Hayes , Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis more had a huge amount of self critical same
Phyllis was pure and unapologetically one of the most beautiful and gifted female vocalist of my lifetime...I'm glad I collected her music it's priceless!
I saw her at a supper club in southern California in late 1989 or early 1990. What a voice!!! She didn't really need a microphone. And what a presence. She was one of a kind! A truly " great" artist!
Let me tell you that RIP-Phyllis made me sit up and (pantomime with a hair brush) I still can't understand her suicide. I'm a firm believer in knowing "THIS TO SHALL PASS/CHANGE"
@Perverted Alchemist You are correct. She was 6'2. I'm the same height and it is very tough dating when you are that tall. I'm sure she had plenty of admirers but they may have been hesitant to approach her. She was so beautiful!
That’s crazy to me. She could’ve found a man taller than her! How do y’all think models have husbands/boyfriends . Kimora Lee Simmons comes to mind and she always date men taller than her and she’s 6’2 I believe
One of a kind. But also a complicated woman. People didn’t talk about Bipolar disorders back then, but this woman suffered through it and drug and alcohol addiction. A magnificent voice and a stunning statuesque beauty, what could have gone wrong right? She didn’t transition well during the 80s and that was mostly a personal choice. She wasn’t going to sing the electric keyboard R&B dance pop tunes that was merging with black soul at the time. “Let hear it for the boy” by Denice Williams is just one example. I remember there was also somebody always messing with her about things. The gossip cats had started a rumor that she wasn’t black, then OTHER PEOPLE started a beef between Phyllis and Angela Bofill that didn’t really exist. Much had been said about her inability to keep a relationship functioning but again that could have been her bipolar disorder as well. She was a classic standout from the by gone era of Evelyn Champagne and Patrice Rushen. The songs weren’t about hating men either. Men, we could relax and listen and enjoy it too. Always wondered if she really intended to kill herself or an accidental overdose.
Interesting post. I don't think it was an accident though as she tried several times to end it all. I think she would have been here today and still singing live if she had been properly diagnosed and treated.
I saw Phyllis for the first time when I was a kid watching School Daze and I thought she was the total package. She was smart, could sing/act and was drop dead gorgeous no matter what size she was. Unfortunately, the label didn't know how to market her.
I remember walking passed the Apollo Theater early the day she was to perform. Only to make it back to Philly later on to find out she passed. Her strong & sultry voice has left an imprint in my mind. I pray she finally found the peace she often sung about in her magical ballads. Rest well Queen... 🦋🙏🏽🦋
Been a fan of Phyllis' for at least 45 years of my life!! This Béautiful Quẻen left a great & lasting impression on the ladies in my family! Continue RIHP; you are truly loved & missed!❤
Unfortunately some artists are still judged on looks, height and skin tone. Rest in peace Phyllis Hyman. I fear her insecurity and loneliness caused her suicide. That took my breath away as I truly loved her voice and height and music.
She was absolutely drop dead gorgeous, had the most glowing beautiful Caramel skin and her 6 foot height screams “model” to me. She was the full package
Always remembered !! TY so much ....my 1st time ever seeing her in an Interview...she was what we needed she was one of a kind...I miss her! Continue to Rest in Musical Bliss Our Queen
REAL QUEENS. Educated, dignified, articulate, sophisticated, beautiful, classy, feminine. All of the garbage out here today self-proclaiming that title need to take a very close look at what REAL QUEENS look, sound, and present as. So sad that the demonic industry used, abused, and spit out this woman with actual talent. A real artist. But that is and has been too often the case.
i find it curious and terribly interesting that phyllis at one time thought of herself as a mediocre singer. to me, an ear that has been listening and loving musicians since 3 yrs old whose now 65, i've heard few singers, including nancy wilson who she idolizes, who capture a lyric as beautifully as phyllis. nancy;s pure elegance, where phyllis is extremely passionate and seems to be capable of morphing from elegance to desperation, with in my view is more honest, authentic, brave. i met phyllis once, and when i told her how important her music had been in my life, she appeared resistant to that fact, but hard to know maybe that day was just that day. still she remains one of the greatest in my view right up there with nina, sarah, dinah, cleo, patti, and my absolute no question chaka. i miss her presence still. but i have her wealth of music. just sayin
Sounds cliche, but I wish I could’ve told her how brilliant she was. Unfortunately, her bipolar disorder got the best and worst of her. She was such a lovely talent.
Singers have their own lanes. And they can coexist amongst each as well. Just like Sade was doing her own thing, Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, Angels Bofill etc. Phyllis could’ve had a beautiful career had she been managed better. y’all act like we listen to Whitney Houston 24/7.
Love that beautiful woman 👠👠👠 my gorgeous Phyllis Hyman 🦄🦄🦄🦄🌈😢😭 rip stands for replacement isnt possible never with our beautiful queen Phyllis Hyman 🦄 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏

Mental illness is the scourge of the earth.
Deep
Absolutely beautiful she was and to hear her talk about herself is very hurtful she was a beautiful soul
@Out Of Darkness what’s wild is that she was ABOVE average in looks. I don’t know why she felt this way. She was stunning. Could’ve been a model if she wasn’t already talented

I saw her at a supper club in southern California in late 1989 or early 1990. What a voice!!! She didn't really need a microphone. And what a presence. She was one of a kind! A truly " great" artist!

One of my favorite singers of all time. I was astounded at her beauty and loved the fact she was over 6 feet like myself.
@Perverted Alchemist You are correct. She was 6'2. I'm the same height and it is very tough dating when you are that tall. I'm sure she had plenty of admirers but they may have been hesitant to approach her. She was so beautiful!
I have been fortunate that very tall women have been attracted to me but my sister model beautiful 6'2" has always loved taller men A tall order
That’s crazy to me. She could’ve found a man taller than her! How do y’all think models have husbands/boyfriends .
Kimora Lee Simmons comes to mind and she always date men taller than her and she’s 6’2 I believe
She is one of the best, ever.
Yeah I'm her niece and I live up to being a good performer like her

Phyllis was an excellent whistler in her concerts, too!
So glad to have witnessed 1 of her last performance live! Such a beautiful & talented woman who just didn’t believe in herself enough, 😭!
And mention that interview felt natural, professional and accurate. Something todays interviews don't even come close.
She is gorgeous I love her music and her being on spike lee movie school daze she was extremely talented and beautiful.
I LOVE this woman...What a sad loss...Her type of performance seems so far away now...
She is, and always will be, one of the best, and one of my favorites.

Her skin tone would have been the last thing she was insecure about. She just had other problems.

Phyllis was a fantastic singer and she was beautiful I often wonder what her music career would have been if she was still here
What a beautiful and talented lady. I believe Phyllis just didn’t have the right people around her to lift her up.
SHE EXCITES ME TO THE CORE! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN YES SHE IS 🥰

Oh I ...I've found love...when I looked into your...oh,oh my fault!
Eyes there it was!!!
What is that green thing on her ear?
I think it's an earring.
lord know why you did what you did can't understand it.
Is she wearing a LEAF on her ear???
Too bad Phyllis was passed up when Whitney came on the scene.
I heard things.
Took me years to accept that Phyllis was no longer here because she committed suicide. 😢
❤
