Mister have had to be in his late 30's or early 40's. Celie was 14. Nettie's age wasn't really mentioned but Celie was the older sister. If Celie was 14 when the story started, Nettie could have been about 11 or 12. Unlike Celie, she was allowed to go to school. After Celie marry Mister, their father was trying to do the same thing that he did to Celie to Nettie. Nettie was younger, but she wasn't timid or passive like Celie. She would fight back. She didn't stand for mistreatment. She left her father's house and she fought Mister when he tried to take advantage of her. If Mister would have marry Nettie, Nettie would not have allowed Mister to abuse her like Celie. In the 1985 adaptation, Nettie told Celie that she needed to fight back
Mister had three children with Shug. That wasn't mention in either movie. He had more children. He was only raising his children with his wife who was killed by her lover. Mister also was desired by the women in town. He could have found a woman his own age. Every woman in town wanted him.
Nettie married Samuel, the reverend who her "father" gave her niece and nephew to, after his wife Corrine died. Nettie helped Samuel and Corrine raised Celie's children Adam and Olivia.

Ohhh... I can see how it was implied in the 1985 movie that Nettie married the Rev after Corinne died. I didn't remember that detail from the book because it's been so long... Thanks for filling in the details and helping us to better understand the dynamics! 😊

No! Mister was dead wrong wanting to marry either Nettie or Cellie because they're not only young in age but in their mindset. They're playing patty cake and running around like children and why would you want a child bearing young woman when he had too many children anyway? Mister should've had many women around his age that would be mature enough to be a viable wife, he was just being a dirty old man!!

When I was in high school, there was a lot of teen pregnant girl's who were dating men in their 20's, mid-twenties and 30s. We had a daycare at the school.
I just didn't understand because, I was thinking to myself here "He knows where you are you in school? You don't even know what he's doing during the day. He's out there roving around knowing his girlfriend was, would never catch him cheating." One girl's, her parents forced him to marry her because he got her pregnant. I thought the men were gross.

" Celie, you got the ugliest smile on this side of creation" ..pops was brutal 😮😮. and also going thru young brides like water . that first bride in the wedding scene and that woman in his funeral was 2 different people . so how many times did pops take virginities between bride A and bride Z .??. being freaking rolling stones was norm then too

It was more common in my grandma's era where this story took place. I found out that in most state laws children can be married with parental consent whether the child wants to or not. Sherry Johnson case is a good example.

Heck yeah, he was wrong. I think older men wanted extra young wives because they believed it was easier to train and control. Women their age is more experienced and most likely less tolerant of their shenanigans and tomfoolery. As she's inexpensive in the bedroom, she has no demands in that since either. Compare Mister to Harpo who married a woman his age, she was his equal if not more than when Sofia left who did he go find a young woman? He may have found her easier to control and maintain. Look how long she stayed with him before she shocked him off.
Mister more than likely had a bad reputation. What grown woman would want to marry him?

Something being "the norm" doesn't stop it from being wrong... We have to ask "why was it the norm?" And I think it is obvious that older men wanted literal children for wives because they are easily manipulated. They basically look at their husbands like another authority figure instead of a partner.

    • @mickeewoop-woop9020

Also don't nothing about Celie or Nettie look like a woman... They're very obviously children. I think it's dangerous to equate puberty with womanhood.

For me: I think with Mister it’s a combination of 2 things: The times and his influence. Towards the end of the movie, his dad came in (after Celia left with Shug and her husband) and said “ You need a YOUNG GAL who gonna cook and clean..”

Hi! When I was in foster care I had a wonderful family but starting at 14 my foster mother’s brother (who was maybe 57 at time always flirted with me and she would laugh it off and tell him boy leave that gal along . Anyways when I turned 16 I told her I was uncomfortable or every time he did her yard work I would stay out of reach. She knew how much it bothered me and it never stopped. Even when I became pregnant @18 she use to make him take me to work . It was so gross now that I’m grown that this man looked at me that way. I just can’t imagine if I was in celies position and I was just getting flirting made me feel uncomfortable

I think that was just the norm back then. My grandmother is born and raised in rural NC. A few years back I met her sister in law. She married my grandmother’s brother when she was 14 and he was in his 20’s. As she talked about the situation there was nothing to her that seemed odd or wrong about it, as I listened completely shocked. And her sister in law was so nice and sweet sharing memories of her time working on my grandmother’s father’s farm. Good times I guess.🤷🏾‍♀️

Just because it was the norm during the time period of the movie doesn’t mean it was right. IMO I feel like back then, just like nowadays when it happens, men went for women/girls who were way younger so they can pretty much manipulate them into becoming what they want/need them to be.

Unfortunately in the US it is legal for children as young as 12 can be married in some states. I think in those same states it nullifies the age of consent. Of course this is only a contribution to child marriage and patriarchy, not because the girl married someone of the same age group.

Remember that Celie told shug that he beats her because she is not shug. I’m taking it as if anyone isn’t shug, he wouldn’t treat them right. Even Mr. first wife was with another man. If Nettie was married to Mr, then that relationship would only last for a short time.

Mr. Seemed to be attracted to dominance and people sure of themselves bc he was not. I think that’s why he was so drawn to Nettie and Shug. I don’t think it was solely about him getting a young girl bc of whatever perception was thought of them at the time. For him it was her personality that he saw in church and around town. She was lively and care free like his beloved Shug that upon further watch, he knew he probably should marry bc of the many rumors about her. And possibly his dad would completely cut him off. If he just wanted a work horse he probably would have specifically cornered Celie to begin with and went on about his business. He would definitely have remained a cheater but at least he didn’t have to be a hands on “father”. Yall should do a video on his and Shug’s relationship next. What was the appeal with Shug to Mr and vice versa. They were so in love and she flowed in/out his life but why? Were they just long term fwb’s or what?

I then I also think about how can u just be playing with your dolls n tea cups to put off on a man. You expect the girl to be over a whole household and “take care of a man” and b chastised to behave like a grown woman when u NEVER GROW UP! ( just 5 minutes in the video , I’ll be back)

Women were considered old maid at age 25. Marrying young was the norm. Most girls weren't meeting boys their own age because the they were looking for providers. The only difference between then and now, is that young girls them had no agency. Lol how sad that young girl was who married Celies father after the mother died. She was sad at the alter and younger than Celie.

Yeah. It's wild. Lol. Back then. It seems maturity was determined by Physical Acts & Materials.. Like Being able to Complete Tasks, children & Money (& in some cases big tits & ass, or facial hair, height and muscles for guys) .. and some ppl still haven't snapped out of it.. 🤡😭.. Like that 22 yr old ball player.. You got Ppl saying he's more mature for his age because of his Money.. and it's like how many examples do we need ? 🤡😭.. Having Money & Children & allat doesn't make you mature.. those are responsibilities.. WHAT YOU DO WITH THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES & HOW YOU HANDLE THEM is what Makes you Mature.. & ppls who's brains aren't fully developed &/or are emotionally/spiritually stunted by unhealed Trauma usually aren't That mature at Many Rates. 🤡.. and at some points Thee Older adults forming Rships with younger ppl & teenagers, often are functioning in states of arrested development.. and that's not an excuse. It's evidence that thee shihh' is toxic & everyone needs help ! 😂😂😂

Older men choosing young girls as wives has been a common practice for centuries. Many of these men possessed some type of social status. As in the Color Purple, Mister was a land ( farmer) owner with young children. Celie ,although wasn't first pick, was ideal for several reasons, one of which breeding additional children (workers) . Celie didn't bare children, perhaps that's why she was treated badly by Mister. Many girls were groomed to be domestic by the age of 12 to be married off to men of status, land owners ,and ministers. It was common for a dowry to be paid to the family of a chosen daughter. See the bible story of Jacob and Rachel. These custom was more about economics by way of creating a labor class. In the case of a low life, ( man or boy) picking the ripened fruit from the tree( young girl) and a child was produced, to which no compensation can be made, A Shout Gun Wedding or The High Sheriff was summoned Rather these customs were right or wrong whose to say. For many of us are the result from Them. Welfare during the 70's - 90's was a much darker practice. It too encouraged the production of children but for more nefarious reasons.

Above all consent is Key! Not wanting something force on your life is always wrong! Mister could have found an underaged girl that wanted him given that was acceptable in that time. Now to me that’s still wrong cause she’d be a child and lack full frontal lobe development.
Now n the topic of sex work isn’t that the point of marriage? It’s just making the exchange much more clear. Marriage has a beautiful lie attached when the truth is a business partner contract. I might also argue that it fails because of the lie! Congrats to those that marry because of “love” and it last because of “love”.

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  5 месяцев назад

Agreed that consent is absolutely key!
In terms of marriage and sex work, that's all going to depend on the partners, and the time and place in which the marriage occurs. It's undeniable that marriage offers the convenience of in-house sex, but I tend to disagree that it's the point of marriage--even in the past. Voltairine de Cleyre referred to married women as bonded slaves, with their husbands as masters.
Outside of the romantic factor, I'd say that the purpose of marriage has historically been economic and to maintain and keep wealth amongst certain groups. Amongst Blacks, marriage served the same underlying purpose and was closely tied to survival. In a capitalist society, marriage has plenty of legal and financial advantages that "shacking up" doesn't offer.
