They wouldn't have made it. No way. Deja was pretty strong in who she was while Malik was still highly immature. As a woman, that stuff gets old real quick. The only time he "matured" was during a tragedy. And even that, he STARTED changing. But I will say, she was a great influence on him.
Nall Deja was immature, and not in tune with the black man's struggle as she should have been. She wanted to integrate.
@@CarsonDouglas lol nah I think she knew, she just didn't care lol. To be honest, I don't think she really cared *as much* about Malik or his struggles as much as he voiced them to her. If nothing else, this couple wouldn't have worked simply because their fundamental ideologies were never going to match. And neither acted like they were going to respect the other.
@@cabbitness1983 the typical black women doesn't care. All she cares about is living like a stay at home suburban mom with the nice kitchen. This case of the girl who got her leg chopped off is a perfect example.
Side note..this movie showcased how humanely Caucassian serial killers get treated..ahead of its time.

I don’t think they would’ve lasted, down to the last second Malik was on that mess, and Deja wasn’t having it, he’s responsible for getting her shot for instigating more on Remy, no he didn’t make him pull the trigger but he didn’t make matters better beforehand
So they may have loved each other, but love isn’t enough sometimes cuz they’re too different, Malik took the wrong lessons and Deja wanted better…they would’ve eventually grew apart

Nope! Deja and Malik definitely would not have lasted long term. I think they were like a lot of those freshman love relationships where the couple bond’s over being new to college and the excitement of the experience takes over their senses. Eventually they would have grown apart and moved on. No love lost but they would have grown in separate directions. It happens like that all the time in undergrad 🤷🏾♀️

Dejaaaaa.... Now to answer the question you guys first of always bring up great points and thanks for another great video I would say that if Deja survived Malik would have stayed by her side because of love and guilt and he would of transferred to an HBCU and depending on how damaged Deja was injured instead of killed she would have had a different outlook on race not so militant but enough to change her mind set surrounding the negativity of race and Malik would have done everything to make sure they were more protected and provided for and of course I believe they would have the arguments about who is the blame at times but I don't think it would of caused them to break up
I dunno. I think in order for this pairing to be long term one of them would’ve had to compromise their ideals. It’s hard to say since both were still young but I think they would’ve made it past senior year.
It is hard to speculate if they would have lasted past college or even to graduation. One of them could have gotten injured, resulting in them not being able to run track anymore and losing their scholarship, thus not being able to afford that college anymore. Malik was already struggling academically during his first year of college, and typically, college gets harder afterward. His GPA may have resulted in him losing his scholarship or being academically dismissed. Another scenario is that one of them found a better opportunity at another college and transferred. There’s also the possibility that one or both will get opportunities after college that take them in different directions to different parts of the country or world. Maintaining a relationship on the same college campus is easier than when you’re far away from each other.

It's scary that this film came out four years before Columbine. In a way John Singleton predicted the future with some of his stories. He was no different than how the rappers were basically prophets.
He didn't predict the future at all,this been going on for years,the last school tragedy was in the 19th century

@@HeitCheri I had no idea about it. I just looked it up. After skimming through the article I read of Wikipedia, it did sound like Singleton might have used that event as an inspiration for that scene.
I do still feel that in a way that this scene was eerily prophetic but to each his own.
I feel like Malik and Deja relationship should have last she wanted the best for Malik. She wanted Malik to believe himself and remy didn’t have to kill Deja she didn’t do nothing to him but all because of Malik she died I wish the movie would have it if Deja lived towards to the end of the movie.
No, they would not have lasted. Deja wasn't pro black. She wanted to integrate, and that would cancel out malik ! The white space where she wants to operate wont accept her with a black man. And black women be prepared to drop us for the space. (Welfare no man in the house) Notice she always gaslights him when he expresses what he feels. She wants to integrate !

Honestly, I don’t think they would’ve made it if Malik didn’t start maturing. Deja seemed pretty self-assured, and while she was a good influence on him, Malik still was impulsive and impressionable. All in all, I can see them being on-and-off throughout college. Most people don’t end up with the person they first started dating in their freshman year.

No. Malik was still a kid in so many ways..and at that point,he had a base level understanding of everything..and man /woman dealings can be complicated..being on that campus during a race war just heightened the stress levels..But the worst thing Malik could have done was talk down to his GF about 'how easy Women have it'.
I'm not sure if they would've truly lasted for long realistically

I haven't watched Higher Learning in years but I thought it was a decent movie. First, Laurence Fishburne had me dying with his pronunciation of "Mr. Weel-yums"😂 I also remember always chuckling the way Deja told Malik "you got some crazy friends" as if it was one word lol.
Anyway, I'm on the fence about how they would have faired romantically, if Deja survived. Maybe for the duration of college but not beyond that.
They were a couple in Love and Basketball as well
