I'm over here boo-hooing with you and I've seen this movie hundreds of times. As a tween, I read this book after I saw the movie and it brought a whole other nuance to the story. Great reaction!! So the story is that Steven didn’t think he could make an authentic movie surrounding a black story and Quincy Jones asked “Have you ever met an alien?.. No?...but you made E.T.” And that convinced him.

And they said racism is not a problem here in the U. S. White people think that everything is black or white when it's just the experiences and perceptions that's different. It's just like Richard Pryor once said that there's no such thing as black comedy when he was asked in an interview. Paul Mooney has said the same thing. Funny is funny, music is music and so forth. I watched this as a teen. It made me sob because I knew someone like Celie.
This kind of stuff really happened and still happens. My mother's best friend was *given* to her husband at 14. Meaning her no good parents gave permission for him to marry her for some kind of compensation.
This happened in the south too. The dude was like 40 or something.
She hated him. Had 3 kids by him and when she became an adult my parents let her and her kids stay with us in the city. I hated it at the time because they were invading our space and we had to make room, but that's because I didn't understand she was trying to get away from him. He came and tried to get them. He was mean just like Danny Glover.
She told him she could either go home and murder him or he could let her go. It was traumatic for me, so I cant imagine her and those kids.
My father told him to get off our property and dont come back. She is free now, but he didnt give them anything to survive on. She started from scratch and got her own. She is a strong woman. I really admire her.

Georgia girl here. My grandmother was basically given to my grandfather as well, just because he was the wealthiest black man in the community at the time. My grandmother had already started a relationship with another man but her family sent her to live with my grandfather anyway. He was much older, known to be a philanderer and was even accused of rape and murder before, and he was physically and sexually abusive to not only my grandmother but my aunts as well - their own children. One of my aunts had a child by him. My mother was spared form his abuse because her older sisters protected her as the youngest of the family. My grandfather also beat and nearly murdered my uncle as a teenager with a knife. My grandmother outlived that demon thankfully but she also had a history of abusing alcohol to cope with him, and eventually this caught up with her. She died way too soon.
These legacies of trauma run deep in the black community - the legacy of debasement born from slavery. It's a deep wound that we're still trying to heal.

The way Spielberg wove the scenes and sounds of Celie's environment together with her visualization of Africa from her sister's letters when reading them was purely directoral GENIUS!!! Then the shaving scene tied with the tribal ritual...INSANELY BRILLIANT AND CAPTIVATING directing. And that cinematography of her throwing the gold-wrapped chocolates from the train. The Color Purple was filmed in my hometown of Marshville, North Carolina. It was the summer of 1985 and I was 13. I would ride my bike uptown to watch them film the town scenes. They brought in tons of red dirt to cover the paved street, decorated the buildings to match the Era and even turned a light pole into what looked like a real tree. It was also very hot when they filmed. 95 plus degrees not counting the humidity. During that heat they actually made it look like the middle of winter. It looked like real ice and snow. I was lucky enough to see, Oprah, Whoopi, Glover, Fishburne and Spielberg wearing his big directors hat to keep the sun off oh him. Never forget that summer.

That movie always make me cry. In the book, Mister tries to get back with with Celie. He even sits on the porch and knits with her. I think that was because after his father died, which he does in the book, Mister is free to express a softer side of himself. Also Celie was in love with Shug.

This movie is a test of one's humanity. If you don't cry once while watching this film, you are either the greatest stoic who has ever lived or you can scarcely call yourself a human being. The film was a huge success critically, as evidence of it's 11 Oscar nominations. It's lack of wins in ANY category, even for Mr. Quincy Jones's incredible score (one of the few times Speilberg hired anyone other than John WIlliams), is VERY frustrating. It may have a bit to do with racism, the NAACP certainly thought so, but it may also have to do with Spielberg himself. Up to this point, Spielberg was known for Jaws and Close Encounters, big blockbusters, and was a highly popular director at the box office, but he was also slowly emerging as an artist. I think the academy didn't feel like crowning him as an artistic visionary just yet. Whoopi Goldberg was totally robbed of an oscar, even if Ms. Geraldine Page needed to receive her award after so many nominations without wins. The academy knew it snubbed Whoopi when they awarded her for Ghost a few years later. Her performance in this film was her feature film debut. It's the most astounding debut performance I have ever seen. Her character's transformation at the end is a complete triumph. You weep because of pure joy, because she has won, and because her ex has done something unselfish for once in his life. The ONLY gripe I have with this film is the scene where Oprah is reunited with her family. That entire sequence with the car was sad and cruel and distracting. Her reunion with them should have been her moment, and the audience deserved that catharsis.

This actually gets me thinking. I know being a lesbian isn't something caused by trauma, people are just attracted to who they are, but do you ever feel like Celie was only repulsed by men and penises because she was abused, but women were the only ones who looked out for her so she felt more attracted to them? I mean to her she associated heterosexual sexual activity with being sweaty, rough, uncomfortable, and overall unenjoyable bc people took it without asking. Shug was the only person who told her she was pretty and actually asked her before pursuing a sexual relationship. I genuinely feel like Celie wasn't a lesbian, but that any experience she could've had with men was ruined by her stepfather and Mister.

And yes, Oprah killed it, I remember knowing of her in the 90s as a TV moghul and being amazed about her performance! For me as a non-black non-American person, I think it was the first movie about Black history I saw not on slavery and it opened this intriguing colorful community but where you could feel that slavery still has its claws and where Black people are their own oppressors with this awful cycle of incests and much more but also this Joyfulness like you said...
