Hollywood not giving Whoopi that Oscar for this film will never sit right with me.
Or Diana Ross for Lady sings the Blues. A true travesty, also Barry Gordy not letting the cast of Sparkle do the soundtrack
Shows the racism that still existed in the 80s. Was such a collaborative effort getting this film made. Sad so many were against it. Saw the film recently on the big screen and wow it was amazing. There were a few families, a black man and his daughter. I’ve seen the film countless times but envied that kid seeing it for the first time on the big screen.
Blame black people. The NAACP Were the ones who had an issue and such a big problem about the movie, because Steven Spielberg, who was white directed it
I just watched an interview with Whoopie Goldberg, and she said quote "The NAACP boycott had a lot to do with it as well as hurt future Black Films."Smh🤔
A very underrated actress
Don't you love how every time Celie envisions Nettie in scenes in the letters, she's wearing the same white dress that she last saw her in and still looks like a child no matter how much time passes.

@SynthwaveJunkie I agree! The cast in the original movie WAS perfect! But I still wonder what it would’ve been like with Tina Turner cast as Shug Avery.🤔💭 But I do understand why she didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of accepting the role.😢

As a 56 year old white guy, this movie still brings me to tears each time I've seen it (which has been many) since it was first released. Yes, it's a African American story which I can appreciate, but it also truly crosses over any race and tells a very "human" story. One of my all time fave movies with perfect casting and can't imagine any other actor playing any of the roles. Truly sad that it never got the awards it truly deserved.

I'm a 55 year old white guy and I couldn't agree more. One of my favorite films of all time, I own it on DVD and every time I watch it, it brings me to tears. Especially when Mr. drives Nettie away in the beginning, her screaming "Why".... I choke up just thinking about it and the reunion at the end. I'm a puddle.
The ending scene, with Mister walking behind Celie and Nettie, captures the power of redemption so perfectly.
I always thought that was a quick nod to the book -- in the book, Celie and Mister eventually become friends (not sure if you read the book, apologies if you did).
The ending when Nettie and Celie reunite in the end it always makes me cry a river. It is such a spiritual scene.

@@deewoodson3545 Agreed - as utterly heartbreaking and heart-wrenching Nettie's "WHYYYYYYY?????" screams are when Mister separates them, Celie's almost unbelieving cry of "Nettttttieeeee!!!" is the cathartic answer and healing point of the film for both women.

It was Celie’s chance to achieve everything she never realized she deserved until she met Shug. No matter how many times I watch this movie, that scene touches me more than any other scene
An Oscar means nothing. The power this film and soundtrack emanate is incredible. Universally loved the world over. Watching it gets me right in the heart every time.
Not universally loved. My film club watched it a few days ago, and three of eight people who watched it that night hated it. I, personally, liked it quite a lot, but I despised the original score.

Quincy Jones poured everything he was into creating the music for this masterpiece. It left him exhausted. His incredible soundtrack deserved an Oscar.
The Color Purple is a timeless work. A timeless representation of life. The acting and the direction were beyond great, they were genius.
And so many people complained about Steven Spielberg directing the movie but it wasn’t just Steven directing the movie. Quincy Jones was also a part of it. This movie is a classic and should have received an Oscar.

Stunning movie. It's won Oscars in our heart. In fact, whatever movies won that year I doubt will stand the test of time this movie has. Brilliant, brilliant story and movie.
I am older now. But each time i see this movie, the feeling stays the same as if i was watching it the 1st time before. It made me laugh and cry. Such an iconic movie.
Oh my gosh, the scene of young Celie and Nettie being torn apart...I can never watch it without bawling. Just seeing bits of it here has me tearing up. Nettie's heartbroken "Why?!" just rips your guts out. Poor little girl. She'd done nothing wrong, and was being treated so horribly.

The amount of coincidences, chances, small miracles that went into the production and the casting is astounding. Some unseen force, divinity, really had a part in making this movie happen

That scene where Celie and Nettie are separated is right up there with the end of The Champ and the beginning of Up: if you don’t cry, you don’t have a pulse.
The first time I saw this movie I was pulled into it emotionally in a big way when Celie and Shug are sitting on the bed reading the very first letter. I realized in that moment that I was watching an exceptional artistic achievement. Thank you, Steven Spielberg for taking the risks to make "The Color Purple."
It's one of the emotional high points of the film. The music is DIVINE and matches the scene perfectly.
I cry when i watch it and I’ve seen it at least a hundred times. The way every character committed to character was amazing. Oprah was very wet behind the ears and she said that the actor who played the Mister’s dad, “Adolph Caesar” told her that she had to allow the spirit of the character to take over her.
She understood the assignment!
Every single person in this movie deserves an Oscar
As someone who’s father abandoned him, when Shug Avery bursts into the doors of the church to win her father’s love… it always makes me cry. It is so spiritual and beautiful.
"See, daddy? Sinners have soul too." And she surrenders all her bitterness, anger hurt and pride in that moment and unbelievably, her father does too. When he returns her embrace, you see on her face and in her body the release of decades of pain and finally feeling love and acceptance from her father.
This is definitely Spielberg best movie. Everyone did great

It was definitely a film I never wanted to end. I could watch those peoples lives forever.
I was 5 yrs old when this came out. I remember scenes here n there but mostly I remember feeling sad and even frightened (of Mister). Now...at 40, mother of 4...idk if I could watch this and not alternate between anger and tears. I now know too much, have seen too much & have been thru too much to not internalize this story. Like OW said "its a classic story", especially in the ADOS community. Love, abuse, separation of family, joy, pain, degradation, triumph...so real and SO POWERFUL!
I’m in my 40s also, and I can understand what you are saying. For me, it used to be hard to see movies with families and lives torn apart, but as I e gotten older, I love the beauty in the sort of “full circle-ness” of it. That gives me hope now. And what Danny Glover said is so true about how age is an equalizer, it can help us see things differently. I hope you may find this true for you. 😊
Spielberg shared a story the world needed to see. No one else did it, he did. I think many were simply jealous they didn't have his clout or financial backing to do this film. It was brilliant - period. Thank you Stephen! 🕊🌿

Great upload. _TCP_ received a somewhat muted response in 1985 but time has revealed it to be among the great American films & Whoopi gives one of the best performances ever captured on film. Top 4 Spielberg, easily - a miracle of a film. That he went from _Temple Of Doom_ in 1984 to *this* is incredible.
This movie should be shown in every high school around the world as a criteria for graduation.. 🙌

The book was an epistolary novel, so the mailbox being a character was so smart. Such a masterpiece this movie.
So many scenes make me cry in this movie... But the Scene when Shug dedicate the song to Celie also always break me up.. Because to me that was the doors of her independence unlocking. Shug was involved in all of those freeing moments for her... With this film... You don't watch it... You live in it... Just stunning.
I enjoyed the making of The Color Purple just as much as I did the movie. I don't think there is anyone on this earth who has watched this movie more than I. My family was sick of me and watching this movie, I went through I don't know how many vhs tapes, I played them until they didn't play anymore.
I couldn’t picture any other cast playing the color purple… till this day it is my favorite movie!!!

It's a beautiful movie. It really is. It's timeless, and it's powerful even now. I have loved this movie since I saw it for the first time. It's one of my mom's absolute favorites too.
Who cares about an Oscar? Those things are bought. This movie gets the greatest award of those who saw it and loved it.
This is by far my favorite movie. As far as I’m concerned, it out shines any film made before or since. Everyone who had a part in making it did the best work of their lives. The fact that Ms. Goldberg got an Oscar for Ghost but not this has always blown me away. The fact that out of 11 Oscar nominations it won nothing, shows me how little the Oscar’s really mean.
For the longest time it was referred to as "The movie that directed itself", because according to the Academy, by not even nominating Spielberg for an Oscar, apparently it didn't need one.
I could not have stated it any better. Every actor was perfect. So many parts of this movie were so memorable. Best movie EVER made. Some of it is brutally hard to watch but it’s all great and a great ending. After that movie every time I see the color of Purple especially in nature I am in aw of how unique that color actually is.

The acting, directing, costumes, soundtrack, and everything about this movie was Oscar worthy. Yet it didn’t win a single award. And I can’t understand why this movie didn’t win an Oscar at least for the cinematography.💔

While watching the movie, I felt transformed back in time to rural Georgia . Should have won best picture for 1985!
All of the acting, down to the smallest role was stellar, in my opinion. Upon leaving the theater, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.😢The soundtrack was awesome as well!

There was a certain magic about Spielberg & Amblin Entertainment during the 80s, and this was one of their many classics! Long before Titanic, this film was nominated for 11 Oscars ... and it didn't even win ONE, which is just mind-boggling! I bet if it had come out today, it would have won several Oscars ... not just because it was such a great film, but because of the ongoing barrage of identity politics in Hollywood today!

In my humble opinion, Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola, Lucas, Eastwood, Tarantino, Stone, Ford, Wells, and Lee are some of the best directors of all time.
This movie is such a treasure. And it seems that there were almost divine intervention that helped bring al of these wonderful people together. Margaret Avery as Shug Avery, Oprah and Harpo, can’t just be coincidence

(It was plenty Of people) Then I looked behind me ....and there he was!!!!Just standing behind me!!! 🤩Dinn't spect for this,But It was magical!!!

I watch this film whenever I've feeling really down. I'm neither black nor a woman, but I really appreciate the story of redemption and overcoming adversity through faith.
Fun fact, the woman who played Olivia was my college professor at RCC in Boston. & the 1st time I saw her at orientation, I knew exactly who she was.

Once I wrote / directed / /edited / produced this one short film.
One of the main actors was in NY trained for the theater stage. We met abroad for a production and got along well. At the time I was working as the Assistant to the Director, and also was getting my things into gear.
With the script done, I told him that this project would never be done unless he was the main male lead.
So his initial reaction was that he wanted to work with me on the script. When he got my first draft, he was like "Don't change a word."
It was more or less basically written for him, but I told him to say certain lines as a throwaway line (he emphasized everything on the first take as if he would be on a theater stage).
And he had to act against an "amateur" actress, who flubbed her few lines and kinda wasn't used to how film sets work
He - in later workshops that he held - told everyone that the best advice he was given was more or less like "Nikita told me that he wrote the script and he as a Director...this line is not important. Just drop it."
Here's the key for movies. My other lead was severely intimidated, since she didn't understand that - even though the budget was poor - production values would be more than she expected them to be.
The D.O.P. insisted to try to prove me wrong in pre-production when I, due to logistics (and for budgetary reasons), had to show him that his elaborate lighting set-rig never would work for this gig.
It was a happy accident that I am still proud of.
The Color Purple was my late Mother's favorite movie to watch.
All of these behind the scenes of classic films could be movies in their own right.
I absolutely loooooove this movie. !!! So does my daughters! My family! It is so touching and beautiful, through the hurt and the pain of it all! This is a classic for years to come and go!
Never forget, this got nominated for ELEVEN Oscars.
NAACP truly sabatoged this film winning Oscars for best picture and best actress Whoopi Goldberg.
