  • UPDATE: READ: I made the video on what someone told me. Then I found out.....
*The "drain holes" are actually the inlet and outlets to the reservoir. I tried to keep it simple. Basically what is happening is that you are putting fresh oil (and/or oil additive) closet to the injectors in a simple way. This flushes them and the reservoir of any build up in my opinion. My bus engine sat up for years before I installed it. I'm nowhere near a certified diesel mechanic. I'm going by the information passed to me. When I did it the engine and injectors quieted down significantly. I did it one more time when I changed the whole engine oil. and added 1:1 ratio of injector cleaner. And continue to see a big difference. I encourage everyone to do their own research.*

I did this to my 1995 7.3 yesterday along with a regular oil change and it did work. Truck was at least 30% quieter than it has been in the last 10 years. I took it on a 10-mile drive today and it stayed the same. We shall see how long it lasts. I would recommend trying this.

I also do that every oil change. Clock is reaching 230,000. Originator injectors and motor runs smooth as silk. Also added shackles to all four leaf springs, rides as good as my Armada (no more coffee spills on my shirt). Hydra chip works great, I love the pedal response. Original paint and interior, no rust on top or bottom (solid Florida F-250 extended cam short bed 4x4).

  • @tomoconnor7528

For everyone to know. Yes this does help. The problem is really the injector solenoid clearances. The oil does help to be changed in the top just to get out the crap in the reservoir. They make a shim kit to resolve the problem. Or you have a leaking o ring. 7.3 injector never really go bad unless you beat the living f--- out of the thing.

I didn’t know about doing this when changing the oil in my truck until I saw this video. I have a 1997 F-250 with 263k miles. I was sure that I had some injectors going bad or something because the truck would blow a lot of smoke when starting it up cold. It would idle rough when first started and smoke out the driveway. After I did this procedure a couple times, the truck is running so much better! The smoke is gone! It idles just as smooth as can be even if it’s been sitting for days. I don’t mind the clatter of a diesel, but it is a little quieter now too. I appreciate you posting this video. It absolutely makes a difference and doesn’t cost anything to do!

By comparing 2:34 and 10:04, I can clearly hear a difference. Thank you. Well done, sir.
My two cents for the comments section:
Any reservoir, by nature, has the ability to collect sediment. In theory, if you wanted to go the extra mile, one could try flushing the reservoir with mineral spirits or something similar. I wouldn't start the truck during the flush...just fill/evacuate with the flushing agent a few times before final oil fill. Bonus points if you can figure out a way to agitate the flushing mixture inside the reservoir.

It was more noticeable in when I did the bus engine. This was because that engine sat up not running for 2 yrs. before I freshened it up and install it. It's a 1995 engine in a 98 bus.

Totally works and very true... The rate at which the oil in the reservoir is completely cycled or changed during normal operation is around 6to1 versus the rest of the engine. After a long road trip, or hard run, it takes just a few minutes to cycle thru a few clean runs thru the HPOP.

The vans engine is buried in the engine bay with the air intake shrouding the whole top of what's left in there. Of course it's going to be quieter than the open engine pick up truck. Bleeding out the hpop oil is a must for longevity. Add some Prolong to it also.

It's like this... (oil pans) scavenge from the bottom , that's why all the "engine oil" circulates. But the HPOP res doesn't feed from the lowest point... It's like trying to stir up a gallon of metalic paint with a 6" screw driver. As mixed as it might seem, the thick / heavy crap is all stagnant more or less. The worse someone lets the oil get, the worse the molasses effect gets. Also, so many 7.3's are driven like a Honda accord, drop the kids off at school, and 15 minutes later, parked ... It takes a LONG while for the 4 gallons of oil to reach running temp, (and trust me, it can idle all day and the oil will not reach top temp, only the water will, maybe) .I run a 2qt Amsoil bypass filter on mine, Rotella T6, and between 10,000 mile oil changes, I do a main oil filter change & vacuum out the HPOP res then top it off fresh, sometimes with a few ounces of PRO BLEND racing concentrate in the HPOP.. At 250k miles, my HPOP tests (with 12v jumped to the ipc) at over 3700 psi.
So the HPOP oil does "exchange" as we see it flow from the injectors into the pan, but it's not circulating with enough current. It's a FOMOCO version of the La Brea Tar Pits...

Bus engine is actually a 95 engine in a 98 bus..Truck is a 97. Note: Read description for corrections. At time of video I was going by what a trusted friend told me. Saw a big difference in the bus and thought I would share it. The bus engine sat up for almost 2 yrs without running before I put it in bus. Therefore the build up of sludge in hpop reservoir. Tried to keep it simple. Bus made way more difference than truck did. Truck was maintenced regularly. Bus engine..not so much.

The way I understand this system, if I drain the oil, the oil in the reservoir you are sucking oil out of, does "Not" Drain. It stays in there. So, you never get a "Fresh" oil change, because the oil in that reservoir will contaminate the clean oil. It is about a quart of old oil. So ...I am glad you showed me the video. I think when I change the oil, I should also suck out the oil in that reservoir. Does my thought seem right? I'm fairly new to the 7.3. I have (2). '97 and '99. Thank you.

You do realize that the second you fire it up, the lpop will pump dirty oil into the hpop reservoir completely defeating the purpose of doing this. Unless you're changing your engine oil at the same time, this makes no sense. Even then, it has little to no benefit.

    • @FreeRangeNomad

Yes, This should be done after a new oil change and before starting it up when the rest of the oil is being changed. Tried to keep it short and simple. Attention span on most YT vids is about 3-5 mins. Yes the drain holes are the inlet and outlet ports. If adding an injector cleaner etc. It's best IMO to add it straight into the reservoir.

Check my update in the description. When I made video I was going by what someone else told me. The "small holes" are the inlet and outlet ports. Sludge builds up at bottom of reservoir if engine sat along time or no maintenance. When I made the video I was going by what someone told me. I did all three of my 7.3 engines a 2nd time (with oil changes) I dumped a 1:1 ration of injector cleaner in there. This gives about as close as you can get to a straight shot to the injectors to flush them out. That really made a difference in all three.

The "small holes" are the inlet and outlet ports. Check the description of this vid for corrections. Yes, the oil does circulate through the engine. But sludge builds up at bottom of reservoir if engine sat along time or no maintenance.

Only for the high pressure 'oil side' of the injector which, along with an electrical pulse, makes it function. For the fuel side, put additives in the TANK!

The "drain holes" are actually the inlet and outlets to the reservoir. I tried to keep it simple. Basically what is happening is that you are putting fresh oil (and/or oil additive) closet to the injectors in a simple way. This flushes them of any build up in my opinion. My bus engine sat up for years before I installed it. I'm nowhere near a cerified diesel mechanic. I'm going by the information passed to me. When I did it the engine and injectors quieted down significantly. I did it one more time when I changed the whole engine oil. And continue to see a big difference. I encourage everyone to do their own research.

One engine of mine was a booger to get loose. I don't think it had ever been out since 1995 when engine came from factory. Be very careful not to round out the allen wrench slot. IDK if or where a person could find a new one. Then its the junk yard search. Maybe put a little lubricant of some sort on it and let it soak in. Good luck. You can always remove the top of the reserv to clean it. But then you're looking at a new gasket etc.

      @@FreeRangeNomad hi Free Range Nomad.
      Please help me?
I have a 2001 f350, no catalytic (Alberta truck) 500 thousand kliks (300 thousand miles) on it.
Was running fine.. I do trees and the chips and dust.. the AEF (like K&N) filter collapsed a little. I noticed this when it changed it because I was getting no power. Changed the fuel filter also.
I tried taking the sensor wire off the EBPV , no effect.
Next I am thinking to drop the tank and clean the fuel filters in the sender.
I also have a RUclips that shows the steel tube coming off the front of the engine getting gunned up.
      Any ideas?
Could I have killed the turbo by letting the air filter go too long?
Thanks.. gonna look at your video in your channel.

It helps if you have one of these engines that has sat up for along time, not been maintenanced regularly, you want to get almost a straight shot of new clean oil (or oil +fuel injector cleaner) to the injectors. It helped mine. That engine sat up for 2 years before I put it in the bus.

I've read a lot of controversy about this. Sure it's personal choice. I've put over 80k on my f250 since I've owned it , now it has 167k . And runs great .
I've also always changed the oil in the resivor. I use a suction tool , that is the size of a grease gun. I pull a little diesel fuel in it to clean it out before pushing clean oil back in . The truck has some minor mods. I just pulled a heavy motorcycle trailer 500 miles to retrieve a bike for a friend. And got 19 mpg. At the pump. With a cross wind.

Some more and louder than others. One of my three 7.3 engines (all of them are stock) was super loud and nowhere near as smooth as the other. The one that was crappy was the 95 bus engine. The engine had sat up for 2 yrs without being cranked. This is where the build up/gunk came from I'm guessing. They all sound the same now and comparable to others that I've heard. I can actually here the stock turbos winding up now.
