I just bought my first diesel to pull my new to me 5th wheel camper. I ended up getting an early 99 7.3L. So far, I have an intake, 4" turbo back exhaust that duals out under the back of the cab. I just got done installing all my gauges. I ended up rebuilding my tranny a couple months ago. I did it myself and installed a tugger kit while i was at it and a dual clutch disk converter. The truck has 275,000 miles on it and idles at temperature with 48 pounds of oil pressure. I also put on a flat bed with a nice tool box and a 150 gallon auxiliary fuel tank. It has 35" tires and gets about 16mpg. A tuner will be my next purchase. I figured id set it up to take advantage of the tuner before I got it. The intake and exhaust did make a difference. I have about $4k tied up into the whole thing, including the price of the truck.

This sounds like a nice rig and would benefit largely with a tune! Nice build.

Thanks, and yes, it would benefit from a tune. It runs really well now, I can't wait to see how it runs with another 100hp and 200 lbft. My next 2 mods will be the Hydra and a turbo master waste gate controller. I'm actually putting my own boost fooler together with a 1/4" pressure regulator.
I'm also really thinking about running heated fuel lines and maybe a heat pad on the fuel tank. I live in se Idaho so it's cold here a lot! Last January, we saw -37 and it can get much colder than that.

Gas Mileage?? Bro, My 2000 7.3 gets 18+MPGs of Fuel mileage! Did my mods back in 04' Banks intercooler, Upgraded trurbo with a 4" strait thru exhaust, the big plus was the NaviStar/Inernational A/C injectors and upgrading to a TS 6 stage power chip! Rebuild the Trans with a converter to handle the power... But! Only run on stage 4 and Rarely give my beloved Power Stroke Hell :) She's a Mid-Night Blue Lariat and still looking Sweet!
The biggest mod was a New Motor wire harness... These trucks are getting old!

I have an 03 superduty 4 door 4x4 with a 7.3 that I’ve owned for about 12 or 13 years now. It gets 17mpg. My only mods are an AFE cold air intake, magnaflow 4” turbo back exhaust with no muffler, and I swapped to a turbo pedestal with no butterfly in it. Everything else is stock. I’m seriously considering the Hydra chip you suggested to see if I can squeeze any more power and mpg’s out of it.

I need to get mine checked out on a dyno. I have an 01 (built in 2000 so forged rods 🤌) with the following mods:
    -S&B intake
-4 inch turbo back straight pipe (no cat)
-Ts6 tuner (set to either 50 or 75hp)
    -Riffraff OBR
-Pulsar ball bearing drop in cartridge (comes with billet 14 blade wheel, i used to have a RiffRaff billet 4+4 wheel on my stock journal bearing cartridge)
-Riffraff EBPV delete pedestal & outlet
    -TurboSmart wastegate actuator
    -RiffRaff billet plenum reinforcements
-Riffraff AIH delete bung (set up for boost gauge)
im sure im missing something but nothing major. My truck is a zf6 truck with dog leg 4wd and is an ext cab short bed larait, shes not the quickest but shes oddly fast, ive done 115-120 😭😂 im seeing about 36 psi of boost as well at wot or if giving the beans while towing which i do the majority of the time im driving it. Im working on doing some more mods from RiffRaff like the FRx, high flow cvd's, oil feed cross over, banjo bolts, and other mods to support more power before i dig into the nitty gritty but im not planning on going crazy with power.

I've had an e99 for 12 years and tried a TS6 tuner but saw a 2mpg drop in mileage so I run it in stock mode. Seriously considering an intake mod and maybe a higher flowing muffler. It's a daily driver that occasionally tows a 5th wheel. Not interested in more noise, but can deal with some to get more power and mileage. I'll try the 50 mph tune with any new mod to see if the mileage improves vs taking at hit. Nice video.

How do you like the setup? I'm planning on going the same route, only difference what im wantkng to do, bigger turbo with a 1.0 housing vs the .84 and an air intake that takes air from outside the hood not from under the hood....
I had a 94 with 180/0 stock turbo with a 1.0 housing and exhaust mods and ts chip with tony wildman tunes, I would peg out the boost gauge if I stayed in long enough and that was 35 psi.... I have videos of the truck. I miss it sometimes.

@centraltexasfoxbodies it's been pretty solid definitely has some get up vs stock . Was on the fence with the 1.0 but so far no complaints with the .84 did have a issue with egts while towing but found out my Intercooler was leaking pretty bad replaced it along with the stock boots and now no issues.

Everybody keeps calling these exposed oiled media air filters “cold air intakes” which is the complete opposite of bringing cold air into the engine. The factory intake brings air in from outside of the engine compartment which is considerably cooler than the air under the closed hood. Not to mention all the dirt getting past the oiled media filter. Increase the diameter of the intake system piping all you want, but I would personally prefer to have an engine that didn’t get dusted and actually pulls in cold air from outside.

I’m not sure if I misunderstood. The steel exhaust won’t rust out as quick as the aluminum?

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  9 месяцев назад

Yes - aluminum is more prone to corrosion from salt. Stainless steel holds up better. I've got an aluminum one on my F350 and I had to have a hole in the piping patched last year. So stainless holds up better/is more durable. Sound is of course a preference but a lot of people do prefer the sound made by aluminum over stainless on these trucks too though.

It has a newer flatbed that's ideal for my type of work.

I'm curious if it already has some type of tune previously installed can you install something different?
I'm not sure how that works so I'll probably run it the way it is and see how it does.
I have a light load to pick up this coming week that will be a good way to test it out. It's a 4 hour round trip through some mountain passes. Like I mentioned this truck definitely has more power but I need it to be able to pull heavy loads and not get hot.
