The only reason the Free Folk were very calm when settling south of the Wall was the trauma of the Massacre of Hardhome and it made them wish never to fight again till the second Long Night until the Battle of the Bastards. Also, Torbjorn was reasonable.

Alliser Thorne was a prick. He was also a man of conviction and in his own way honor. He ended up at the wall for nothing more than doing his duty, so naturally he became embittered, yet still continued to do his duty despite that. He may not have had the same vision Jon had, but he was dedicated to the Night's Watch.

Its beautiful to see that every time Sir Alliser Thorne talks to Jon he is far superior. Even in the moment of the hanging he still shows his force. What a good character he was. But he didn't understand who was the real enemy.

    (Forgive my bad english)
I know that many people don‘t agree with me but I think Alliser was a great character. Like GRR Martin said, there is no black or white. And Alliser wasn‘t a bad person either. He lived for the Nights Watch (of course he wasn’t grateful to be there after Roberts Rebellion but he lived with it) and cared for his brothers even he treated them like shit. He protected the realm from thieves, rapist and murderers. And then there comes some bastard (I love Jon Snow) and let hundreds of them trough the gate. Of course he should have listened to what Jon Snow had to say about the real threat. But Alliser fought years against the Wildlings and now he has no choice but accepting it. But he couldn’t. So he had to do what was right - for him. He killed his Commander, not because he disliked him - no, he killed him because he wanted to protect the realm and the Nights Watch.
And this is the reason why I think he is a great character. Because no one is poor evil or good. Everyone thinks his actions ar the right one. And if the Story would have shown more of his sight, we would understand him much more.

Great character. Ser Alliser was a man of principle and he did serve the Night’s Watch loyally and to the best of his ability. Jon learned a ton from this man. He learned to lead despite heavy opposition. “Do you know what leadership means, Lord Snow? It means that the person in charge gets second guessed by every clever little twat with a mouth. But if he starts second guessing himself, that's the end. For him, for the clever little twats, for everyone.”

I've never seen an Thorne video, and I am so thankful for one. Imagine seeing your family die at the hands of "invaders", and then a man, who lay with one of those murderers, became your PM or President. Thorne even showed loyalty to Jon's position, as Lord Commander, when he stood by and watched as people, whom he knew were murderers, marched past him into his country. Thorne was wrong of course, but how could any of us judge someone for being filled with such rage, when only a few number of us have even seen war much less a war waged for our whole life. Thorne was no villain.

He may have been unpopular but he was a professional soldier. Nothing more, nothing less. His job was to fight, and create more professional soldiers. He was hardened by his exile to the wall, hardened by the unending war with the wildlings, and disillusioned at the quality of recruits. Men whom he believed were a danger to themselves and to their brothers.
In this he was comparable to Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann from Full Metal Jacket. He did his duty as he understood it as best he could.
The inherent problem was poor leadership on Jon Snow's part. Quite simply he wasn't ready despite his great potential, courage and vision. He never explained his actions properly, never tried to make his men understand why their lifelong enemies should sleep under their roofs and eat their bread after having killed and raped their people. He said just do it and expected obediance, that's not how leadership works. Both Jon and Robb and especially Stannis weren't great leaders in that respect. If Jon had spent 5-10 years working his way up the ranks, learning about command and control, and the values of communication and diplomacy of speech when giving orders he could have been a great leader however circumstances intervened.
To lead one has to inspire trust above all else, and from the point of view of many Brothers he was a traitor and nothing more so is it any surprise they mutineed?

@@vincentbeall3680 Officers and Other Ranks have an unspoken covenant. The Other Ranks submit to Officers' authority because they expect the Officers to do everything in their power to ensure their welfare. In return Officers expect loyalty and obediance.
Pretty much all the mutinies suffered by the British Armed Forces in all its history came about when officers broke that covenant, and the men felt that they could not be relied upon to look after them and took action.
In the Vietnam War this was often taken a step further and officers that broke that covenant could wake up to a grenade in their sleeping bag.

One thing you always have to give Alliser Thorne, in a series where so many people died either suddenly by betrayal, crying for mercy like babies, or unable to accept when they had lost, Alliser Thorne did not. He knew from the start what would happen if he failed his coup, he accepted that possiblity and decided what he was fighting for was worth it. In the end he didn't cry, he didn't bed, he didn't make excuses. He fought, he lost and then he would rest. With so many boys parading around as men in this series, Alliser was a real man, a hard son of a bitch sure, but a real man who understood and accepted the consequences of the decisions he made and live and died with them.
    Really a underrated character.

Say whatever you want about Ser Alliser, but he was "the man for the Watch". Besides his rivalry with Jon, mainly to the fact he was a Targaryen loyalist, and Eddard rose up against Aerys along with Robert, he recognised Jon when needed, and shown respect when it was required. He died for the Watch, believing and following his oath. I believe if he did saw what Jon did beyond the wall he would allow the wildlings to cross the gates peacefully.

Everyone knew Aerys was crazy and mad, but Brandon Stark (Ned's arrogant brother), in his pride and stupidity, was confrontational in front of the Mad King. The Mad King of all people. Brandon should have "nicely" asked for a private audience with Rhaegar to confront the crown prince for taking Lyanna.

Ser Alliser has spent 2 Decades in Nightswatch, months across the wall and he couldn't see them, this is shit, makes no sense.

Dude. You've never even seen war. He was more loyal to the Night's Watch, than Jon, who tried to leave once and did it for 2nd time. He lost friends and brothers of the Night's Watch thanks to wildlings. We cant imagine how much anger and sadness must fill you when your friends die and your leader allies with their killers. Alliser never got a chance to see the good side of the free folk. From what he saw, they were the enemies they swore to defend the seven kingdoms from aside from The Others. It was him who rallied his men to fight in a desperate battle without any thoughts of giving up. It was him who fought beside his men. He was a nights watch man in the heart. The kind of Jon heard stories about before arriving to the wall. A knight loyal to the nights watch until HIS WATCH HAS ENDED. If you struggle to see that in him and just see a bully, then youre blind.

@@jeankristen.thestallion.5489 Wtf you talking about? Alliser was. Alliser followed every rule of the Nights Watch and never even thought about leaving it after being forced by Robert to go there for following the wrong king. He ordered his men to do their duty until their watch have ended when they were outnumbered by Mance Rayder, who had 10 times more men than the whole wall. Its actually Jon, who went against the rules of the Nights Watch. (Not saying he did a bad thing. If I was there, I wouldve supported him, like Edd and Samwell.) Nights Watch has sworn to fight against the wildlings ages before the events of Game of Thrones. His views and actions were entirely based on the code of the Nights Watch and his bad experience with Wildlings. If you dont have general knowledge of nights watch and loyalty I suggest you dont comment next time.
