  • Immediately after the Heart Break Tour in 1989, lead singers Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill decided to pursue solo careers and left New Edition. Leaving members Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins to their own devices. Legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would suggest that the trio form a group of their own. A suggestion that would be the impetus for the creation of Bell Biv DeVoe. The group would take the genre of New Jack Swing to the next level with the help of producers like The Bomb Squad, Dr. Freeze, Alton Wokie Stewart and Timmy Gatling from Guy. Fusing hip-hop, rap and R&B together to form a new sound of music. Hits like Poison, Do Me, B.B.D (I Thought It Was Me), When Will I See You Smile Again would set the tone for the year of 1990 when it was released in March. The album would prove to be a huge success for the group and a major influence on hip-hop and R&B moving forward.

"Our music is mentally hip-hop smoothed out on the RnB tip with a pop feel appeal to It."❤🎙️🔥 BBD for u.. It didn't make sense until it did greatly.. paved a way for 90s black pop culture.

I will either run a poll or do a video talking about the next phase of album retrospectives and who they’re going to be on. Michael Jackson is on the list of options for sure.

As always, great video! Definitely listened to this on cassette a lot as a kid. I noticed the different production value compared to other solo projects and Heart Break and from watching your video, it all makes sense. Pretty amazing what the BBD project ended up becoming. From what I remember, BBD got more exposure on MTV/radio than NE ever did in part that "Poison" was such great, unforgettable track, especially with what was happening with New Jack Swing / Hip Hop / R&B music just exploding. The remix album reflected the better production of songs from _Poison_ that BBD deserved and contains the versions of the songs that I really love, especially "Dope!" and of course, "Word to the Mutha." The "Word to the Mutha" remix deserves its own homage... such an amazing track. I remember crying in joy when I first saw the video on MTV. New Edition videos never really made the rotation on MTV (which made the MTV Video Award appearance very surprising to me), and to see all of them together singing and rapping the different parts... So good! I bought the video single on VHS and watched it over and over again...

Thank God they didn't use Babyface or Jam and Lewis. The Bomb Squad, Spyderman and Freeze gave them a completely diffrent sound and let them create their own style and fashion. They shaped a more street New Jack Swing sound which shaped how rnb/Hip Hop artist our now.

Fire content, and I agree with you that "Ain't Nuthin' Changed" was the weakest song on the album. I'm glad you talked about WBBD: Boot City, because they have the superior versions of Word to that Mutha, I do need you, and When will I see you smile again. Can't wait for the next installment!
