  • Ralph Tresvant's first studio album as a solo artist was released on November 20th, 1990, following the multi-platinum successes of his fellow New Edition members. Unable to release his original solo project, Living In A Dream; Ralph would enlist the help of several songwriters and producers to work on his highly anticipated solo debut. Ralph forges his own unique path apart from the group members and opted for the clean-cut, smooth and stone cold approach. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, L.A Reid, Kevin "Kayo Roberson and Daryl Simmons penned the chart-topping R&B hits: Sensitivity, Stone Cold Gentleman and Do What I Gotta Do. Michael Jackson, Babyface, Timmy Gatling and Alton Wokie Stewart were also among the long-list of creative contributors making this the definitive and most successful album of Ralph's career. This album retrospective details the history of the album and it's tracklist.

Thank ya’ll for supporting my channel and the video.
Apologies for how long this video took, the last two months were way more hectic than I thought and there were times that mentally/emotionally I didn’t have the energy to put into finishing the album retrospective. So I didn’t want to finish the process until I was back at 100%. Great work takes time and I appreciate your patience.
    Thanks,
    -MDJ

Love whenever these drop! Well, this is the final debut solo album to cover! Next up are sadly the follow up flops from each act before they reunited for Home Again.

I think if Ralph dropped first his album would have been more successful. Your videos are one of a kind, no one else does this on RUclips. I hope you will do these on Prince and Morris one day!

It might have been more successful but still not as successful as BB's Don't Be Cruel. But I'm a RT fan so just happy that he can still perform and still in good shape.

Wow, it's very interesting that he thought about releasing "I Love You (Just for You)" as the debut single. I love that song from his album, but that wouldn't have been the best way to go at first. He definitely chose the right singles to start with. I could see MJ singing "Alright Now". I didn't realize Bobby was in the "Sensitivity" video. Seems like Ralph from the jump had a clear purpose in mind with the theme of his album and he delivered it. Another fantastic retrospective! Thank you!

Great album retrospective of Ralph Tresevant self title! I enjoyed watching it and I love this album! It's one of my favorite albums in the 1990's R&B/ New Jack Swing. I love the first track and the last track. And I listen to the album till this very day! Keep up the good work as always and can't wait for another album retrospective video in 2024 this year! Once again a great video! Happy New Year bro!!!

What a dope album. It just came out a little late. Wish there was some LA Reid and Babyface songs on the album. LA did work on stone cold gentleman. Darry Simmons and Kayo did some good work on the album. But of course Jam and Lewis did there thing.

Great insight and video as always dawg. I’ve had a hunch that when Jheryl Busby left MCA, that major budget/push for Ralph likely left with him (and was instead given to JG who Busby took lol). Luckily for Ralph, he had a lot of hype going into this project which netted him some big time producers and the album ended doing pretty well. Still, I think this album and Ralph’s solo career could’ve been bigger if Sensitivity was the second single to a hard hitting lead akin to Preogative, Poison, or Rub You The Right Way. Luckily for Bobby and BBD, they worked with producers like Teddy Riley, Face&La, and Dr.Freeze before they became hot commodities. Unfortunately, Ralph sacrificed a lot for NE but that doesn’t mean he was a flop, his debut is a impressively consistent and quality album.

Also, I know you’ve said you’re not gonna make videos for the actual flop NE albums (it’s goin down, Hootie Mack, Forever, and Provocative) but i’d like to see your thoughts on them so if you’re up to it i’d suggest you combine them all into one video where you don’t have to deep dive into every album but instead just like a quick overview of them and why they flopped.

Just listened to it for the 1st time after always loving the "Sensitivity" single. I think its the best album out of the NE camp, even better than Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel. Each track is different but strong and gets the absolute best out of Ralph's voice and style. It uses all the sounds of the early 90s I love. Its the direction I wish Michael Jackson went in. Sucks the record label didn't push it towards a more pop audience because I think it could've crossed over and sold a lot more. But it worked out because Ralph seems happy and didn't want the limelight that the other NE members had but valued too much.

Well as for Ralph, his album was very long overdue but away from New Edition.
This album for Rizzo really dominated the charts just like he did with NE Heartbreak he brought back Jam and Lewis, Face and LAReid, and of course Michael Jackson, King of Pop
While Sensitivity, SCG, Do what I Gotta Do, Rated R became singles and oh yeah She's my love thang was performed on Soul Train. I and everyone wish the track Yo baby Yo was on there but it would be on the House Party 2 soundtrack now I love the other songs, this is why Rizz's album was platinum.

One small correction, Alright Now was made and recorded in 1985, in between Thriller and Bad.

I said: “the track was among the many songs that was worked on between the two.” Meaning, up until that point in time. I didn’t say that the track was recorded in 1990.
