  • New Edition's fifth studio album released on June 20th, 1988 went on to become their definitive album. Featuring hit singles: If It Isn't Love, Crucial, N.E Heartbreak, You're Not My Kind of Girl and Can You Stand The Rain. New Edition's time as a quartet came with it's fair share of problems as their fourth album ushered in a transitional period. As Ralph Tresvant became interested in pursuing a solo career, Johnny Gill would be approached by Michael Bivins to join the group. Ultimately Ralph would return to New Edition and they would record Heart Break with the help of the legendary songwriting and producing duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. This album retrospective details the history of the album and it's tracklist.

    I remember there was speculation if New Edition could grow and evolve into music with deep, adult themes. This album shut everybody up forever.

    Heart Break is without question the best New Edition album period. also I think the NE Heartbreak tour with Bobby Brown and Al B. Sure! was their best tour as well. this album paved the way for groups like Troop, Hi-Five, Boyz II Men, Jodeci etc. If I could choose an era of New Edition to go back and see it real time, hands down it would be the NE Heartbreak era along with Bobby Brown Don't Be Cruel era as well.

    MASTERPIECE is an understatement for this album. Personally, I got into NE early on because my older cousins dug them so much. It was their way to lure females in. So following their career leading up to HEARTBREAK, I, like everyone else, thought this album was the perfect upgrade they needed. You know, in hindsight, I compare this a lot to the transition of THE TEMPTATIONS in the late 60's. When Johnny became the replacement for Bobby, it was so reminiscent of Dennis Edwards replacing David. With Norman Whitfield on production, the group ascended to another level. So is the case with JJ & TL. This album, coupled with the fact that DON'T BE CRUEL was released the same day??? TKO!!!!! I got this cassette along with Public Enemy's 2nd tape 4 months after release on my 11th birthday. Never lost it's magic!

    The heartbreak album takes me back to my senior year in high school. It's special to me because it came out at a time when I was going through my coming of age stage in my life. I don't know why Johnny was mad, boys to men is the best song on the album.

    Usually when I used to buy albums during the late 70’s thru 90’s, I wouldn’t purchase them as soon as they came out. I wait until I know of at least 4 or 5 songs that I like was on them. However, I brought this one early on because I couldn’t wait to hear New Edition with Johnny Gil included. I was not disappointed.

    Love this album so much. Easily in my top 5 of all time. I had hoped that these 5 would have made just one more album with Jam and Lewis before going their own ways, because Heart Break left us wanting more.
    I remember buying the cassette when it came out and didn’t get Superlady until I bought it on CD and found it as a bonus track. It’s a good song and I’m sure it was a hard choice to exclude it from the LP/Cassette.
    Thank you for the video. Watched it from beginning to end. I especially loved how you included the interesting origins of Ralph and Johnny’s bromance and Johnny’s rant about “Boys To Men”. Well done.

    Rizz and Ronnie wanted to bring Bobby back for the Heartbreak album. But Mike & Ricky both said hell naw. Jheryl Busby & Louil Silas were against the idea as well, as they’ve invested a lot into “DBC.” They deliberately released Heartbreak & DBC around the same time.

    • @misterDjayMDJ
      @misterDjayMDJ  9 месяцев назад +7

      That’s an interesting part of their story, I would do a video on it if I had more info to build it on. On one hand I understand why Jheryl and Louil were against it. And based on Bobby’s strengths, I don’t see how he would’ve fit on any of the songs except N.E Heartbreak. I remember we talked about this a little bit before. Bobby even mentioned in 86 that he planned coming back to do a reunion with them. Just didn’t work out. At least he did the tour and came on stage with them to do Telephone Man.

    I love the Home Again album because all 6 guys managed to be in the same place at the same time. But NE Heartbreak was the first time these boys were allowed to be men. I don’t know if any R&B group album after this was able to touch it.

    Great album retrospective of New Edition Heart Break. I enjoyed watching it and I love the history of that album. That's one of my all time top favorite albums by NE. I love the production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on this album. And I still played the album till this very day. I love all the songs on there from the 1st track till the last track. Keep up the good as always and I know you're gonna do Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel , and then the groups solo albums. Once again great album retrospective bro!

      I preciate the comment man. I get requests a lot to do retrospectives on certain albums. There’s got to be enough material on that album in order for me to create a retrospective. Otherwise it’s just my analysis of the music and brief narrative. If y’all cool with that then sure, if there’s a demand for it in the future. But for now I’m focusing on the more popular albums, then I’ll move back to the others.

    Shucks Livin' in a Dream would've been a great album for Rizzo but that would involved with the 1990 "Ralph Tresvant" album straight after NE Heartbreak, BBD Poison, Johnny Gill selftitled 1990 debut, and BB Don't be Cruel albums.
