    In 2019 I had a massive occipital lobe stroke that horribly effected my vision I had made 3 quilts before the stroke hit. My vision is mostly out of focus but I think I could try this one thank you for explaining what you are doing instead of music thank you again

    I’ve done this before, too, and love it! Instead of stitching in the ditch, I like to use some of the decorative stitches on my sewing machine and sew on top of each seam. It makes it look like I worked so much harder on it!😉

    Simple and lovely! This is the same method I use for making charity lap quilts. One difference is that I find stitch in the ditch too frustrating to stay close to the seam, so I use a serpentine stitch (which I lengthen and widen a bit). The result is the same, but it doesn't matter if I stray from the seam line.

      Same, or I do a straight stitch 1/8" or 1/4" on both sides of "the ditch".

      Thank you Pam 😊. I really must become more adventurous and try some other stitches. When I'm doing the tutorials I just seem to automatically go with the ditch stitching.

    Thanks for showing this simple quilt. I love the blend of pastel pinks and blues together.
    This is a great beginner quilt or when you're short on time. If you're like me and have trouble staying "in the ditch" then stitch a ¼" either side of the seam. Use a variegated thread to add a little bling to the stitching. This is also the perfect quilt to use all of those fancy stitches you never use on your machine. Set them to a moderately large size and sew them down the center of your seam lines. You'll add interest to the quilt top and you're reinforcing the seams at the same time...great for kids quilts or those that will get heavy use and frequent washing.

    I love this method! It’s been many years since I made any kind of quilt at all, but I know I could do this because of your great video. Just one question, when stitching in the ditch on each row did you say you turn the quilt after finishing one row and go in the other direction for the next row? Thank you for the great tutorial 😊

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  Месяц назад +14

      Yes that's exactly what we did. We turn the quilt around on each row and that helps to stop the quilt from bunching up on one side.

    I m wondering if I could hand quilt instead of stitching in the ditch? Do you think it would " bunch up" , maybe use a small hoop?
    I've been wanting to attempt hand quilting, but it seems so daunting.

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  Месяц назад +1

      It probably would be okay, but I've never hand stitched a quilt, so I am not really in a position to give you advice on this. Lot's of people hand stitch their quilts. I'm sure there are videos on RUclips that can help. When I don't want to stitch in the ditch I will sew a line a quarter of an inch on either side of the seam line and that looks fine.

  • @dcwatashi
    @dcwatashi Месяц назад

    I forgot there is another technique that I saw somebody do where when you are sewing the top to the bottom and the batting if your seam allowance is half inch then you actually start perpendicular and sew in from the edge 1/2 inch at the start and then you do the same when you are finished
    The fabric does line up better when you are trying to close the opening

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  Месяц назад +1

      I haven't ever thought of that, but it sounds like a great idea, and I will certainly give it a go next time I make one of these quilts. Thank you for sharing that tip 😊

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  Месяц назад +1

      I'm a bit of pin freak although I do like to use spray between the layers as well. I like to make sure the layers are not going to move much. Especially with these types of quilts. I'm not so concerned when I am doing a quilt with binding.
      I have also heard about not back stitching with a walking foot, oops 😂. But I've always done it.
