What a perfect idea to use to teach kids about quilts :). No cutting :). It you have several 9 and 10 year olds with rotary cutters it's a scary thing. Plus they can see their quilt taking shape in a short amount of time. And can leave an hour lesson with beautiful results! Great idea! Thanks :) :) :)
p.s. and I'm so glad you said something about all squares not being exactly the same size after sewing! This never gets addressed and it always makes me so frustrated like I'm doing something wrong!
I'm 75 also and just finished a baby quilt using this block. I just want you to know there are a lot of seams to match up when putting them all together... but it's easy to do.
Well, holey sheets, Batman! Why didn't anyone tell me about this method 8 years ago when I made quilts for my sons and their ladies for Christmas????? I never quilted before then and I swore I was never going to again because it was so knit-picky and tiresome work. THIS, this I can do for lap blankets for all the old ladies in my life who are showing their age. I'ma saving this. Thanks for popping up in my YT feed today.
I can’t thank you enough for showing me how to make a quilt. I made my mom a Mother’s Day quilt she has Alzheimer’s. I made it with all different color purples and in the middle I put a button she absolutely loved it. My husband was so impressed I told him I surprised myself. This was the first time I ever made a quilt now I’m hooked. I’m making a breast cancer quilt for my mom. She’s a cancer survivor I thank you once again❤.
I'm thinking about what you could do with the pieces cut from the 10 inch block that are wasted when you don't cut strips that you can use for several other projects!! Otherwise great way to teach a beginner to make that particular block!!!!!
I have made several quilts this way but used a bit smaller square, 4" or even 3.5" and placed it in random places, not in the middle and it looks GREAT and adds some interest
Thank you for sharing. I tried this method for a baby quilt as I had some 10 layer cake squares left from another project. Fabric, wadding and backing selected, the process from start to finish, including binding, took 6.5 hours, for a beautiful quilt to emerge. I will definitely use this method again.😊
I am a beginner and I would like to sew a small quilt for my granddaughter. I wasn't sure if I should attempt it until I read your comment. Thank you for sharing. -ScottyMont, U.S.A.
I'm watching this with my 86 year-old mom who has been sewing for over 60 years. She has sewn many quilts over the years, they're all smaller pieces sewn together. She was amazed when she saw the final results of the first block, we both thought it was all pieces, not a small block sewn on top of a big block. This is so easy I might give it a try when I finally get around to trying my hand at sewing. I do want to do it some day, I just don't have the time for it. But a project like this might be what I need. This and other quick and easy projects I've seen on youtube.
It works great if you have a panel with a lot of small boxes or different shaped and oriented boxes. Think of an animal panel that includes a giraffe and an alligator - vertical rectangle, horizontal rectangle - and undoubtedly squares for other animals.
She's lucky to have you. I took Home Ec when it was still called that and only know the bare basics. But this looks like something I could do to boost confidence ❤
I started at 60 and now I’m 76. I am not great at it but small imperfections reminds me that it is homemade according to my husband. You can do it and once you make your first one you will fall in love with quilting. I also tie my quilts. Just go for it
I saw this today and I couldn’t wait to try it out .Ii have a brand new great grandson he’s 5 days old and I have this fabric with sailboats on it and had all my 5inch blocks cut ready to sew and I switched gears and making this square in a square it is so much fun I haven’t been quilting very long but I am hooked Thank you for this block pattern and you explained it so perfectly ❤
Love how you did this. I'm trying to learn to quilt again after developing brain damage from a virus. Your design has encouraged me to try to make a twin size quilt which I'd totally given up on. Your step by step instructions are great, Thanks so mcuh for sharing your joy of quilting, God bless you.
Wow! I’m so sorry to hear about your brain damage. I will definitely be praying for you! I hope you do try tho quilt. It’s fun! You can do it!! God bless you as well!
I have a zillion charm squares, so I tried this with a 5" and a 2.5" square. I also put a 2.5" square of batting under the small square. It worked! I think I have the beginning of a trapunto quilt!! I have a bunch of things I should be doing, but it has turned into a quilty play day. Thank you for the inspiration!
This would be a great quilt for donations! If the fabric is pretty, the quilt will be pretty! Even a newbie could do it. I am definitely going to try it!
I got a sewing machine for Christmas as well. My hubby wants to see results. This is very cool and I think I could actually finish a quilt using this method.
I am so glad I found you and your wonderful instructions. I never thought of this easy way and it looks beautiful. The choice of fabric pattern is beautiful. Thank you very much. Also you get right into the excellent instructions and no annoying music and sill chit chat that a lot of people do thank you again ❤
When I saw the title, I said to myself this has to be the square-in-a-square quilt block because I can’t think of a quicker and easier quilt block to make. Very nice demo with clear instructions.
I made this as a baby quilt and it went together in record time! I am a novice quilter, but this made me look like I'd been quilting for a long time! The mom-to-be and her family were very impressed and everyone loved the idea of a "message square" in each block so friends and family could all write their best wishes for the baby & sign each square! A BIG hit!! Thank you for this tutorial!!
What??! Why did I never think of this? Thank you for sharing a new-to-me method to make a quilt top. Certainly faster than cutting all the pieces and sewing them back together.
Making my grandson a quilt with lots of fabrics in video games and favorite cartoons. Using this method made such a cool use of two of the fabrics at a time and endless variations to make SUCH A COOL AND DIFFERENT quilt!!! SO HAPPY I found this video!!! THANKYOU ever so much!!! SO EASY!!!
I’ve been quilting for almost 50yrs and have made lots of square in square quilts. This is a phenomenal way of approaching it. Now I’m about to rip thru my stash to look for that layer cake pack 😮I know I have somewhere.
I have been looking for a pattern to feature certain fabric prints for my niece that rescues horses and dogs, other live stock.. Many are beautiful horse prints, dogs, Cowgirls and Cowboys. This pattern will definitely get me started on a project I have been stymied over because I just was stumped over how to feature the best prints.
I love this idea, but I'm thinking you could make a much bigger quilt with a charm pack, and a layer cake, which luckily, I have both, I couldn't decide what to do with either one, now thanks to your wonderful video, I know exactly what I'm going to do with them. Thank You for sharing your time, and your talent with all of us. I also love how nice and neat the back looks.
I so love this idea!! I have two immediate thoughts of who need this kind of quilt!! You alluded to both - wedding and baby! I have a new grand arriving in May and think I will make up some blocks to take to her showers and let ppl write prayers and scripture on them. Was also thinking these would be fun to make into big HSTs and sew in patterns, maybe pinwheels, etc. Another thought is how easy it would be to use fussy cuts for the center charms and make an I Spy quilt for baby! YAY!! Thank you for sharing this awesome method!
Beautiful! You could make it bigger with a layer cake and charm pack and you could make “opposite” squares. Thanks for the great ideas!! I’m gonna have to try this one.
Gorgeous quilt top. I haven't sewed in 35 yrs, but just getting back into it. I love your channel & the way you teach. I remember being taught this technique by my grandmother, sew quick & easy. I look forward to more. Thanks
I made a 5 & Dime quilt with this method, only I cut each finished 10” block into 4 5” squares, tossed all the squares together & then randomly pulled them out & sewed back into a large square again. Very pretty scrappy look. And so easy.
Saw this the other day, and sat down and made a square with leftover fabrics. Love the finished and neat squares. Starting a new project as I send this. Thanks for the easy pattern. 😊
Started doing a white one today as you suggested for my grandsons wedding in Oct. 2024. I have never felt confident in making quilts but I find this easy. Thankyou so much,
Thank you for the new technique. You are very easy to follow and thanks for choosing the fabric choice, my step father and husband died from Parkinson’s. Glad I can make a project from this beautiful fabric.
I’m glad people find this helpful. It was very well explained and demonstrated. I’m just too cheap to basically throw away a pack of charms that are underneath that fabric. But I’m always open for new ideas. Thank you for showing this method.
There are a lot of people who have trouble cutting due to hand issues or other reasons. For those, this is a great method. It’s also good for a quick and easy quilt or to reach someone to quilt. It might not be the method for everyone but it turns out beautifully. 😁
You make this look so easy!! Thank you for explaining the process so clearly, and thank you for explaining what a layer cake is. I'm definitely going to try this. You had so many helpful tips, like using your smallest quilt block and then making all of the blocks that same size. And I love how quickly and easily you added the sashing between the inside blocks. Brilliant! You made a very classy looking quilt...and you did the quilt top in only 4 or 5 hours, Wow! Whoever gets that quilt is lucky. Thanks again for sharing this.
I follow a few quilters. I like Kate of The Last Homely House because of her gentle, quiet attitude, and Amy Dement for her Life's Lessons, and Karen of Just Get it Done Quilts, for her no nonsense advice. But for actually learning i most respect and enjoy your videos. You are so thorough and patient and you don't rush through anything. I am gaining confidence by learning from you. Than you!
I've been cutting my scraps into specific sized squares for years. I have fabric tubs full of them. You could use this technique with any sized squares where one aquare is twice the size of the other. I could do 1.5" on top of 3". Haha! It would look like it took forever! This is so clever! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this tip! Was just going to ask that question. I plan to cut squares from my husband’s high end preppy & plaid button downs. (He no longer wears them) My project for those squares is to make baby quilts for boy/girl twins being born tomorrow- our first grandkids! This technique is going to save me!
I just wached someone showing a similar process with a folding technique followed by a 1 inch seam on a fleece or flannel to make a raggy quilt to quickly make the top. I thought that folding and stitch technique might be able to be used in a cotton fabric as well and here you were!!! ❤ I love it!!!
Hi! Was it another YT video? I would love to have the link to it if you wouldn’t mind sharing it. I want to make a raggy quilt and the easier the better! Thanks in advance!
Thank you for showing how to do sashing. As a beginner quilter, I have searched how to do sashing. The majority of instructions simply say add sashing and quilt! Great quilt pattern
I just came across this tutorial. It's the first I've seen from you! I subscribed, and I can't wait to see more! You explain so clearly! Perfect tutorial! Thank you so much!
Thankyou so much for sharing your video, the seems are so neat and you don't have all those fraying pieces that take ages to cut off, absolutely Fabulous idea ❤️💡💡
Great idea. Never would have thought of this. One subscriber mentioned using a layer cake and a charm pack. Great idea too. Could make even more blocks and two quilts!! Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Oh, I love this concept. I don’t know if you invented it for someone else, but I am so thrilled to have the knowledge under my belt. Thank you so much for sharing. I can’t wait to get started. ❤Thank you.
This is genius. I’m going to use this method to make my first block ever. I just got a BabyLock Jazz II. Can’t wait to start sewing on it and make my first quilt.❤️
Thank you for such a wonderful idea for an easy quilt that looks so much harder. Your explanations were so precise and easy to understand. Thank you for a detailed video!
Square in a square. I love this block. I've made several of these quilts over the years. I have several memory quilts I need to do. I've been thinking about using this method to highlight the memory fabrics.
I just finished this for a charity quilt and it went fast and easy I used leftover backing fabrics for my 10-inch squares that I made and cut up some of them for the 5 in squares really works fast and quick and I made it as a charity quilt
I made close with big squares and lack tangles. I would love to make quilts with smaller squares but it just seemed like it would take forever to get one done. With this method, I am sure I can make this quilt. As it looks quicker and easier like the ones I usually make. Thank you so much.I'm glad I stumbled on your web page. I am so excited thank you.
I loved your idea/video. I wanted to make a signature quilt for a special wedding. The only thing different I did from yours was: Before sewing the last side of the original block, I inserted a 3 1/2" sq of a (light cardboard/ postcard/ cereal box ) into the center pocket before sewing the last strip side ( from the back) . Then I sewed it closed. I sewed all the blocks the same way.,and finished the quilt top like yours..... I brought the quilt top to the wedding and had the guest sign the center squares ( the cardboard made a solid surface to write on). I also made extra blocks, if more signatures were needed and for absent guests. After I got home, I cut a 1/4" slit with the rotory cutter on one side (the cardboard also helped) to remove the cardboard. I then cut the other 3 sides with scissors, to save the squares for trimming the border. A few of the extra blocks i used on the quilt back. Again THANK YOU for your beautiful block idea ❤❤❤
Have aquired many yards of fabric over the years for quilts .Have the books ,the tools, batting , watched quilting shows, but never never could decide what block or what fabric to use ? Have made small baby blankets from 2 single pieces of fabric & machine quilted them , freeze every time i think about cutting out blocks , etc !! So nice to see your fabulous video show up in my feed !! I will make some quilts because this is so smart & you make me feel like anyone can do this ,Wonderful teacher that you are !!! This might clear out the clutter in my sewing/ craft room so i can actually use it as it was intended! Thanks a million you sweet lady ! Xox 💚
Easiest and most consistent 4 parch ever! Thank you
For sure!
Glad I found you and learned this technique.
Me too !!!❤❤❤

I’m glad to see this! I’ve had so much trouble trying to make a quilt. But this gives me hope I can do it. Thanks!
I love the way you done this, I'm for sure going to do many of these, can't wait to see more of your quick ideas, thanks so much.
Your explanation and demonstration was so clear, no nonsense and helpful. Very reassuring for beginner quilters. Thank you.
Love your demonstration. Clear & well executed
Thank you so very much for sharing this. At 75 years old it will sure make my quilting so much easier.
Ha! I’m right there with ya sister! 75 myself. The easier the better!
I am 74 years old and totally agree with you!
73 here and it’s a marvelous idea! 😊
I'm 75 also and just finished a baby quilt using this block. I just want you to know there are a lot of seams to match up when putting them all together... but it's easy to do.
I’m 82 and still love to quilt! We got to keep going! 🎉

❤❤❤😊❤😊❤
That is too amazingly simple I'm so glad you showed me how to do that.
I have made several quilts this way but used a bit smaller square, 4" or even 3.5" and placed it in random places, not in the middle and it looks GREAT and adds some interest
Would love to see a picture

Yes! Do it. Super easy and fun
Best beginners quilting tutorial! Thanks for sharing! 💯 The quilt top is beautiful! ❣️
Thank you so much!!!
Love how you sewed these blocks without all of that cutting. Will definitely give this a try.
Have fun!

I’m teaching a nine year old to sew, she watched your video then with my watchful eye she is doing it! Thanks for a great video.
That is awesome!
She's lucky to have you. I took Home Ec when it was still called that and only know the bare basics. But this looks like something I could do to boost confidence ❤
Wow, I love this technique. I have never quilted but this makes me feel like I can at 68+. Thank you❤
You can do it!
You and me (70+) both!
I started at 60 and now I’m 76. I am not great at it but small imperfections reminds me that it is homemade according to my husband. You can do it and once you make your first one you will fall in love with quilting. I also tie my quilts. Just go for it
I tie all my quilts. It makes me feel that I have put a real touch of old time quilting to a new style.
Awesome!!
I have a ton as well, thanks for the idea!
I love this idea!
Love the idea with the batting. That would be cute with the center piece fancy cut maybe as an I spy quilt. Thanks for the idea.
That is an awesome idea. I love the look of Trupunto quilting. You could even go one step further and make it a QAYG quilt.
I love this quilt! I belong to a quild and we make a lot of quilts for donations. I'm going to show our leader
This would be a great quilt for donations! If the fabric is pretty, the quilt will be pretty! Even a newbie could do it. I am definitely going to try it!
This is BRILLIANT!!!! I got a sewing machine for Christmas & never thought I could make a quilt.. but now I can!! I’m stoked!!!!
I got a sewing machine for Christmas as well. My hubby wants to see results. This is very cool and I think I could actually finish a quilt using this method.
You can do it! Have fun with it. 😁
I am so glad I found you and your wonderful instructions. I never thought of this easy way and it looks beautiful. The choice of fabric pattern is beautiful. Thank you very much. Also you get right into the excellent instructions and no annoying music and sill chit chat that a lot of people do thank you again ❤
I agree. Clear plain instruction and good videography can’t be beat.
Thank you!!

This!!! Especially about the music and silly chat.. Love this woman!!!
Thank you!!
When I saw the title, I said to myself this has to be the square-in-a-square quilt block because I can’t think of a quicker and easier quilt block to make. Very nice demo with clear instructions.
Thank you!!
Very new to quilting but your concise tutorial gives me confidence to try this. Thank you x
Yay!!! It is really quick to go together and yes it always looks great. I’m so glad you made it and everyone loved it!! Way to go!
WOW WOW…YOU HAVE MADE ME SO HAPPY…SPENT SO MANY YEARS THE OLD WAY…NOW AM OFF TO MAKE ANOTHER THIS WAY..THANK YOU
Yay!!!! Have fun!!
I love this method, and used it for my alternate blocks in the comfort quilt I made for a friend having chemo.
What??! Why did I never think of this? Thank you for sharing a new-to-me method to make a quilt top. Certainly faster than cutting all the pieces and sewing them back together.

Wonderful!
Such a smart method of making square in a square. Saves loads of time and energy from cutting and matching. Thank you.
Yes it does!!!
I wish someone would have told us about this years ago. This is great. Thank you , thank you.
You absolutely can! I didn’t have a charm pack or might would have to increase the size of the quilt. Thanks for your comments. You’re sweet!
I so love this idea!! I have two immediate thoughts of who need this kind of quilt!! You alluded to both - wedding and baby! WOW! What a clever way to get that block done! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful! You could make it bigger with a layer cake and charm pack and you could make “opposite” squares. Thanks for the great ideas!! I’m gonna have to try this one.
I thought about doubling the size with another layer cake but hadn’t thought about a charm pack. Good idea
Gorgeous quilt top. I haven't sewed in 35 yrs, but just getting back into it. I love your channel & the way you teach. I remember being taught this technique by my grandmother, sew quick & easy. I look forward to more. Thanks
Thank you so much!
Couldn’t have come at a better time for me! Been “purging and cleaning “. Now I found an easy way to get some fast sewing done. Thank you!
Wonderful!
I made a 5 & Dime quilt with this method, only I cut each finished 10” block into 4 5” squares, tossed all the squares together & then randomly pulled them out & sewed back into a large square again. Very pretty scrappy look. And so easy.
Can you post a photo I am very new to sewers ng This sounds great
Saw this the other day, and sat down and made a square with leftover fabrics. Love the finished and neat squares. Starting a new project as I send this. Thanks for the easy pattern. 😊
Have fun!!
Started doing a white one today as you suggested for my grandsons wedding in Oct. 2024. I have never felt confident in making quilts but I find this easy. Thankyou so much,
You can do it! Have fun with it and congratulations on the grandsons upcoming wedding!
Thank you for the new technique. You are very easy to follow and thanks for choosing the fabric choice, my step father and husband died from Parkinson’s. Glad I can make a project from this beautiful fabric.
Thank you! So sorry to hear about your step father and husband. 🙏

I love that the proceeds are going to Parkinson's. I have Parkinson's and sewing, especially quilts helps to keep my hands steady. Thank you ladies!
Sorry to hear that. I’m glad it helps!! 😊
This is a brilliant technique! And it leaves the back of the quilt so much neater, too.
Love the square in a square. And love your wedding ring set, just beautiful!!
Awww thanks!!!
Loved your demonstration. I appreciate how you repeated steps occasionally. I have so many scraps that I could use with this idea! Thanks so much!
Oh My! this is awesome! So many beautiful layer cakes and I just did not want to cut them apart, now I have a block without cutting. brilliant!
I've been cutting my scraps into specific sized squares for years. I have fabric tubs full of them. really liked that I am always looking for a quick and easy quilt to make with layer and charm packs thanks for the video

I made this quilt, one of the easiest quilts ever, turned out beautiful
Awesome!
Thank you for showing how to do sashing. As a beginner quilter, I have searched how to do sashing. The majority of instructions simply say add sashing and quilt! Great quilt pattern
Thank you!
Excellent tutorial! Your voice is modulated as you explain and demonstrate each step required of the block / quilt top.

Yay!!! Thank you. You should try it. It’s fun!
Yay!!!
I love this technique. I used my squares and sewed them together to make a chandelier pattern. Such an easy project.
This was so fun to watch! My mind is spinning thinking about how I can use this technique
You are a clear instructor. Easy to follow your instructions. I’m looking forward to using this pattern.
I hope you try it. It’s fun and quick.
I’ve done some for customers where they get the squares from us and bring them back signed and we make the quilt top. Fun and great heirlooms
Great idea! My brain keeps going to wasting a 5 inch square but this solves that issue.
What a beautiful tutorial for a beginner and done with no cutting too 😅, how you get roped in! 😆🙃😉
😂
Thank you for supporting Parkinsons research. I am a Parki warrior and this means so much.
Xox 💚
You’re so sweet. I’m glad you’re going to try it. You will love it! Thanks!!!
