Wont the used up roll eventually start smelling as it is out of tank and fish wastes decomposing? I have a tank in my bedroom and concerned if eventually the new solution will end up stinking.

I mean, probably!? They will probably degrade faster since the material is so thin (stretch/rip) but I suppose its technically possible!
