- The New York Philharmonic celebrates the centennial of the late Leonard Bernstein, its fabled Musical Director from 1958 to 1969.
Led by Bramwell Tovey, with special guests Annaleigh Ashford, Christopher Jackson, Laura Osnes and Aaron Tveit, this loving tribute promises to become a classical music moment to remember.

Wish I’m willing to listen. Unfortunately, my high school band band teacher decided to sing a single verse of that song, replacing Maria with my name. Wish I didn’t look up the actual lyrics because what he didn’t sing was “I just kissed a girl named ___”. Good thing I knew he was married with kids, so I knew he was playing around with me (I was a junior/third-year high schooler then)
In On the Town, Bernstein's music totally reflected the wartime era. He had a talent for becoming the time for which he was composing.

Don't think there's much more to say in praise of this wonderful music so I'll go slightly off topic. I absolutely love that the women in the orchestra are wearing many colors rather than black as I've become accustomed to seeing. From the audience it looks like the orchestra is studded with gemstones. Lovely.
It was for New Years Eve 🎉 -they would normally being wearing black…..
I knew Lenny. I loved Lenny. I miss Lenny even now after so many years. May his music and his life live thru eternity.
Had the honor of playing under Lenny and Stanger. Those are memory I can never forget.

Thank you for posting the entire New Year's eve performance of 2018, honoring Leonard Bernstein's theater pieces. That was his best area of composition. And to see it all - I could never attend, and now here I am! And new people I've never heard before - Annaleigh Ashford and Christopher Jackson. I guess I'm lucky to be me.

There's a lot of great music here, wow. Since hearing Leonard Bernstein's own Candide overture recording from the 60s (which is lightning fast), I've always been slightly disappointed by other performances which just don't have that jolt. But that aside, there's so much good music here, all excellently played by the NYP and hosted by Maestro Tovey. Gotta say - Aaron Tveit completely nails "Maria" in West Side Story. 1:13:42 That one relatively short performance was a major highlight of the evening, and the audience rewarded him for it.
I agree about Aaron’s performance. He is so humble and could have even had the audience cheering longer. I’ve watched this countless times. The whole show is just perfect.

Yesss.. I have watched this more than a few times, and I love watching every part of it, however, my personal favorites were the "Wrong Note Rag" which is so fun, and of course, Laura and Aaron performing the West Side Story "Balcony Scene" is both captivating and beautiful... Perfect time to see the entire show again with another New Year fast approaching!!

You can always tell from the premature applause how many people are not familiar with Candide! 😂 But a lovely concert!
They need to put the other New York Philharmonic New Years Eve Concerts online, too, because it's just so annoying, that they're not on there.
I miss the time when there were composers like Bernstein. Nowadays composers only know how to make sequences of dissonant chords without any coherence. Of course, some are still saved.

I got this from the website right after it aired. I do not believe they still have performances like this one or other years still available on their site to watch unfortunately.
