Scruffy Plays Pikmin 4 - Episode 20

- Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen!
We're going all in on completing Captain Olimar's side adventure, reveling in all the nostalgic throwbacks, considerable challenges, and alluring rewards this timed mode brings us!
Music used at the dedication at the end is an excerpt from "Lament for the Bishop of Argyll," performed by Bonnie Rideout Игры
I remember the very first video in this series where Scruffy he said he felt 30 mins a good video length. lol
And I'm so glad he changed his mind, everytime I'm just left wanting more after the video ends.
@@jorgemtzb9359same
im still left wanting more Lol
Yeah I knew that was immediately gonna change. It's a very long game to 100% lol
My guess at the beginning of taking 60 days to beat the story is still on par too cuz he's going a similar pace as me. Soaking in everything and savoring it like a fine stake
The Sage Leaf trials are hard. The reward is definitely worth the effort, as you can't get it anywhere else.
1:28:43 A magenta Pellet Posy! I suppose Scruffy managed to pause right when the pellet was turning from red to blue, or vice versa.
1:33:53 this enemy right here is my favorite one in the entire game, at no other point is there a dweavil in the shipwreck tale and there is just one here for some reason
That's fantastic, I love it
I found it cute how they combined both the good and bad ending of Pikmin 1 into a single event for 4.
Me, having never actually played a pikmin game: Well, I'm sure the Man-at-Legs is a tough enemy but I don't see why - IS THAT A GUN????
Small tip if you want it: charging into ice will instantly break it, and I believe that applies to frozen enemies too.
Another thing I've noticed is that if you ask Oatchi or Moss to sniff out something while riding them, you will automatically move towards it. You can try it in the hub via the gather Pikmin command.
No, frozen enemies just take damage as usual from Oatchi's charge. If they get one-shot by him, that's just because his upgraded rush damage is pretty high, as usual.
@@matthewr6148it’s true for the hydro jellies at least, those get instantly destroyed by rush if frozen no matter their HP
@@GoobbueXIV Right. Guess I just forgot to specify that.
The Man-at-Legs is such a terrifying oddity, even among other Pikmin creatures -- who let spiders get ahold of machine guns??
Although now, this makes me wonder if the other infamous biomechanical enemy from Pikmin 2 has made its way back into this game...
1:25:41 Same energy as walking home and suddenly seeing a snake next to your foot.
Serene Springs... might just be my favorite song in the game.
Yeah, it's already on my studying playlist!
It’s serene shores
I think this person is referring to the mashup of Serene Shores and Distant Spring
With how hard the second sage stage was for me and-from what I’ve heard-many others, I’m jealous Scruffy got it on their first try
The elusive scruffy dandori being on point moment
FYI, with the sage leaf trials, all you need to do is get bronze. Getting better scores is purely for bragging rights.
Can confirm, as someone who platinum-ed them all, you don't get anything
(Altho I just did it coz I had nothing else left to do in the game. I kinda wish I'd got a *little* something tho. Not even an item, just like some better dialogue from Sage Leaf would've been cool)
I love that Scuffy is observant and engages with his fans like this. Many other huge youtubers provide the entertainment, but don't engage with their fan base. The fact that he listens and observes his fans as much as he does puts him leagues above some other bigger youtubers in my book.
34:35 I read this theory that the onions are the beings who cause all the shipwrecks. I feel like since the onion is capaple of entering the upper atmosphere, maybe they also have the technology to bring ships to the surface so the pikmin can have a leader?
I cant wait for scruffy to finish more of the sage leaf challanges, the reward(s) are quite
...special

@meme_sause7438, very difficult though, indeed. There was one that was very easy, the only challenge in the whole game that I was able to get platinum on, but the rest are generally pretty hard, especially the challenge in which there is very little time to accomplish the objective. I was able to do what it asked literally as the game clock struck zero.
I love that despite their menacing and honestly awesome designs, the Grubchuckers are just so unbelivably unthreatening that Scruffy doesn't even realise that they are _capable of attacking_ until after a whole day, and doesn't even lose a single pikmin to them.
[Also technically spoilers - nothing major but I'll put a warning anyway]
I wish they were more of a threat, especially against Oatchi and Moss. For being such a formidable looking enemy that would usually only show up in the final area, they really don't do a whole lot, and the fact they are countered so much by literally just walking past on moss, nor can they even catch up with pikmin carrying a single treasure... Amazing design and has potential to be incredibly engaging, but sadly it's just kind of there lol. There is genuinely more threat from a dwarf bulborb.
Grubchuckers are so bad at fighting, I once threw 25 pikmin at one and walked away to do something else. The next time I saw them, they were dragging the grubchucker's corpse back to base with no casualties.
Certified Grubchucker Moment
my favorite moment was when the grubchucker said "it's grubchuckin' time" and then chucked all that grub all over those guys
the reaction at 1:25:42 is truly priceless
great content as usual from scruffy
Seeing you rush into those pots with a few seconds on the clock I was biting my nails knowing what was coming
Which pots? Do you have a timestamp?
@@jorgemtzb9359 perhaps they meant here? 16:05
These challenges are extremely tough. Don't worry about anything other than completing the trials now- get your platinums there after getting 100% everywhere else, as you take your upgrades into that cave too.
if nobody got me, i know scuffy plays pikmin 4 episode 20 got me
Absolutely I suggest you to use and check out the “Engage” function in the pikolopedia, especially for the boom cap bloister and large bread bug, since both have functions missed in your playthrough. Being hit by the largest breadbugs rage induced charge doesn’t do damage but knock you over, and it’s really darn cute. The boom cap bloisters ace up its sleeve is that the time between Pikmin entering its mouth and successfully eating and killing it is like 4-5 frames it’s insane
Good luck with the Sage Leaf trials, the reward he offers is definitely worth the effort of figuring out his trials, though :)
Man I've been dropping likes on every single video here Scruffy makes truly incredible content
Congrats on beating Shipwrecked Tale. Also, the S.S. Dolphin gets repaired by the end. Also, the rewards are for beating the 5th and 10th stories. But I wish you luck. They truly are the hardest challenges in the game (especially the 7th story). The rewards are 100% worth it though. Good luck trying to beat them. I respect my younger brother and anyone who manages to platinum all of them.
5 is grinding my gears since the pathing is just atrocious. Wings… WHY TF ARE YOU NOT GOING uP?!
@@stanley8006it’s actually really fun if you know where the winged shortcuts are
The 7th story is only difficult because you can’t turn auto lock off.
@@tanman2654 yeah
i mashed tf outta zr and it worked@@tanman2654
The Sage Leaf Trials are certainly difficult but the rewards are incredibly worth it! Try and get as far as you can, but don't feel too discouraged if you get stuck on a particular story; your upgrades carry over into the trials, so you might reach a point where you'll want to save up for upgrades and come back later. The first reward isn't too deep in, and I'm sure it'll get you really invested. Final note is you get the rewards regardless of rank, so don't feel bad if you ever barely skirt by with a bronze medal. Good luck with your Dandori Training!
1:13:00 Olimar’s advice was not to use a bomb rock that way.
It was to throw the bombrock when the Guildamander is doing it’s licking attack, it will consume the bomb.
New pikmin episodes make me so happy!
42:35 I love this Guy, that Dude right there, big Guy
Love Grubchucker
2 hours of pure wholesomeness
Starting the series with Pikmin 1, I really love the shipwreck tale.
We did it guys, we hit the two hours!
I also like when they played that one flute part from the Pikmin 1 title screen when they turned Olimar into a leafling!
2 whole hours… we are being fed guys!!!!!!
Congrats on getting the good ending of the shipwreck tale! The sage trials are quite challenging but totally worth beating
I do recommend getting to at least story 5 before continuing the main story. Maybe that'll entice you to do all 10 before doing the story missions :)
You did an extraordinary job in Olimar's side mode! It personally took me the last 2 days before the end to complete it.
Yeah I’d totally recommend the Sage Leaf’s trials as last thing you do. Like… mega spoilers down in there. Anyways, love the video! Keep up the great work!
On one hand, yeah it's incredibly difficult...
But on the other hand, the reward is too valuable to skip over
@@zerbietheslug5219 oh very. VERY. But SPOILERS:
said final reward is in the final cutscene as well, and it’s a great reveal of what’s to come if seen first there.
One of my favorite parts about new Pikmin games is that we get to see some of the smaller enemy families gain new members, like the slooches and bloysters. I love seeing the family trees grow :D
Los últimos 5 minutos de esta historia extra tienen mayor cantidad de referencias musicales que todo el modo historia.
Y eso que el modo historia ya tiene muchas referencias musicales xD
Might just be me but did you notice the moss-shaped cloud in the sky when olimar takes off?
42:34 tall peaceful boi
1:04:04 hide and seek :)
1:06:33 BONK
1:26:52 man, is it just me or does the pilot’s seat look insanely comfortable?
1:40:05 i like the subtle detail of moss not being there anymore when the ship takes off, leading into the reveal of her hiding in the cargo hold
1:41:14 get leafed old man
1:43:19 surprise!
Always looking forward to the rest of your let's play! This game is amazing and adding your commentary makes it really good quality content :)
Keep it up, Dandori master!
You do WANT to clear all 10 of the trails given to you by the Sage Leaf.... but I will warn you the final one is VERY difficult to even pass.
#7 was very frustrating too.
it’s a good day when scruffy posts 💜
DANGGG SCRUFFY THAT BOMB ROCK PLAY AGAINST THE BULBEAR WAS FLAWLESS💅🏻 1:47:07
@Scruffy, something that you didn't find out about the bloomcap bloyster- if you use any pikmin to latch on to the pearl like object, instead of rock pikmin, the shell will invert and it will become like a bowl and it will be difficult for your pikmin to escape.
1:43:18 This theme is actually a reference to the credits theme from Pikmin 1, but its much more subtle compared to the other themes.
As someone who’s seen LP’s of all Pikmin games except 2, the Man-At-Legs is absolutely wild to me.
Like I’m sorry what! We just have a “giant” steam punk spider mech with a machine gun now. Like every other enemy makes sense as some sort of wildlife or in rare cases supernatural/superhuman being/entity, but nah the Man-At-Legs really said *GUN.*
35:10 did you mean winter? or, did you mean YOU landed here in summer
oddly enough, pikmin 4 is the first entry in 19 years to NOT have a winter area, despite INTRODUCING FREEZING HAZARDS
It's worth noting fiery bulblaxes and frosty bulborbs can be counteracted by environmental hazards. There's a fire geyser right next to the frosty bulborb in the first trial that can be used to thaw its ice coating.
getting to watch scruffy after school is awesome!!!! thx for this
I see Scruffy upload, I come ASAP.
I highly recommend finishing the first five floors of the Trial of the Sage Leaf cave before you finish Giant's Hearth. There's a really good reward in the 5th floor waiting. Same goes for finishing the last five after that.
Commenting from work, I'm so excited to watch this later tonight!
The way this episode came to be shows that Scruffy reads the comments and how much the community cares for his best experience by avoiding spoilers and still taking him onto the path.
While I was one advocate of this path, I want to reinforce that it would have been absolutely fine if Scruffy didn't decide to follow the hints from multiple commenters. The playthrough alone is just magnificent and I personally enjoy every minute of it!
Pikmin 1 in my Pikmin 4? Its more likely than you think! Yeah the difficulty is really in the fact the days are shorter, not wholly but its the part you really feel after playing the main game for ages, and then you try to do the same amount of stuff with Olimar and physically can't. The snootwhacker on the shelf drove me insane.
The sage leaf stuff is brutal, don't worry so much about ranking just finishing. If you reach the first reward I think you'll understand why everyone was excitedly poking you this way. Doing main story and thus doing rescues and thus upgrading oatchi will be helpful though! I definitely consider the sage leaf something you poke your head in, go 'oh gosh' and run away to the story for a bit and then come back and knock it out in one day, or two if you take a break after the first reward.
I look forward to every single episode of this series. Thank you so much for making it!!!!!
That ONE miniature snootwhacker caused me so many problems - glad to see I’m not alone lol
There is also another ending if you don't get enough part. Those details are fun
The Trials of the Sage Leaf are hard Scruffy, it might be best to at least to get the Plucking Whistle before doing anything in it (trust me, it helps), but you DO get some stuff out of it so its not so bad
They’re definitely doable without the whistle, but probably not at platinum level
Plucking whistle is definitely optional, even for platinum, but it'll take a few hours lmao.
Spoilers dude
@@superguy9834better to spoil and tell him to get better items, than to keep egging him into the hardest optional challenges in the game early…
just noticed that in the Sage Leaf Trials, the trial update sound is the exact same as the Countdown Jingle from Mario Kart 8!!
The reason why the burrowing snagret has a different corpse than in pikmin 3 is probably because there was a glitch where it would get stuck and stretch as winged pikmin carried it to the onion
Also, there are two really good rewards from the sage leaf (details in a reply).
(Spoilers for sage leaf rewards)
The purple onion and the white onion
Something I've learned watching Pikmin Speedruning: when it comes to transporting past creatures, often it is faster to simply distract tougher creatures while the Pikmin sneak by, and sometimes distraction isn't even necessary.
The reward for Story 10 is never before seen, and could be considered incredibly broken. However, I think the difficulty of most of the later Sage Leaf Stories balances it out somewhat.
I was just waiting for that enemy discovery hahaha
Thing freaked me out so badly at first…
Do NOT get to stage 5 of the trial until completing the epilogue, but don’t rush to get all the treasures first either. You’ll see when the final scene rolls why that is.
I love recognizing DAW stock content in songs
i've kinda had this theory that the pikmin where grown by humans and there the only link left, maybe the human who lived in the house grew the very first race of pikmin and the onions developted later when the humans died.
Fun fact! When you first arrive in the Hero’s Hideaway in the Shipwreck Tale and you have to recreate the prologue, you can ask Moss to sniff out stray Pikmin, and she’ll get most of them for you!
2 whole hours of bliss
2 hours of dandori, incredible
I was refreshing my page for this lol
2 hours holy!
Same lol, Scruffy’s been so consistent with uploads and they always make my day
Do the trials first!!! I cannot express how important those items are! Plus if you do those first, the rest of the Dandori challenges will be a breeze to platinum
Something I'd like to note, Olimar's Shipwreck Tale has motifs of the Pikmin 1 area themes sprinkled into the areas in this game, as you've noticed.
Hero's Hideaway supposedly has little hints of Final Trial somewhere in its track, but I just don't hear it.
I DO, however, hear a similar note structure in Leafy Showdown! Dandorimar's bout with you being the 'final trial' you have to endure to save him. Something I think is a nice touch if it's true.
EDIT: Further inspection, I hear it in Hero's Hideaway, but it's reaally subtly snuck in by a quiet piano or plucked by a string instrument.
You NEEEEEEED to finish the Trial of the Sage Leaf before anything else.
1:56:45 also off memory serves me correctly, lighting all the fire totems might help the red pikmin from shivering and stopping
I love hero's hideaway ost in shipwreck tale
Just a random thing scruffy should see oatchi's idle animations with pikmin
Personally, I advise against you Platinum-ing the Sage Trials. Just try to beat them *period* for now. I'd only recommend trying to perfect them after getting every other upgrade in the game.
i love that the pikmin memorial at the end is kinda shaped like that [spoiler] enemy we saw on the final day of olimar's mode!
Yay! Pikmin early gang!!
If an enemy or pellet is being dragged to an onion, the colour of the strength\weight indicator will be the colour of the onion that will convert it to pikmin.
So you don't have to actually wait for it to be absorbed by the onion to see what pikmin onion you have available has the least pikmin.
2 HOURS LONG? WOOOOOOOOO
I wish he didn't finish olimars story, so he could've found man at legs in his main playthrough
Yeah the commenters did him dirty
@@ShuckleShellAnemiaI feel like there’s positives and negatives for both. Without finishing this rn the rewards for the sage leaf trials would be useless. I had this exact problem when I played - I 100% every area before even starting the shipwreck tale so the trials were pointless for me other then getting a true 100%. But yeah it would’ve been really nice to see the enemies true first encounters should have been.
@@kitfizto kinda moot when the sage leaf trials are harder than the rest of the game

YAHOOO!! OLIMAR SHIPWRECK TALE LET'S GOOOO!!!
1:25:48
For his neutral special~
*joker pulls an entire man at legs out of his pocket and chucks it across the stage *
As one final note, I suggest using rush on gates, especially elemental ones. It takes out an entire tier of damage to it (for instance, an electric gate with 3 bars left changes to 2 with one rush) and is especially helpful in these caves. Also, any creature coated in ice will have their ice melted by fire in the same way water cools off fire enemies. This also applies to the firestarters.
I've found that certain gates with a fully upgraded mega rush sometimes does 2 layers
If you’re ultra spicy, it destroys the entire wall in one charge
I love how you could have just used idlers alert to call all of the 100 pikmins back at once lol(would have been very satisfying)
you can bait the frosty bulborb into the fire geyser in the 1st trial to melt the ice on its back
The fabled 2 hour episode
we've broken through the 2 hour barrier!
In Olimar shipwreck tale, if you wait sunset on the final day at the hero's hideaway, the music will turn sad, because olimar know he will die if he doesnt hurry up
Proof? A video maybe?
Just so you know, the giant Bulblax you encountered in the Serene shores is not actually an Emperor Bulblax but it goes by another name. You can find it in the Giant’s Hearth and the piklopedia will show you that it is a different enemy.
if i remember correctly the days in shipwreck tale are actually the same length as days in pikmin 1
even if I think you've already made more progress into it... I'd love to see you struggle through all of these "Master" levels on a live stream instead of you going through the caves solo!
we broke the 2 hour mark... based!
TWO HOURS?! THAT'S A NEW RECORD!
Timestamp 58:10
Scruffy says 'withdraw' where I would say 'deposit', 'store', 'put away', 'send [pikmin] back to the onion' or such.
However, after a bit of thought, I suppose both have valid use in this case.
While I would use 'deposit' or 'store', etcetera, to indicate they are going in to an onion; but if Scruffy, for example, sees the map as a battlefield and the pikmim as soilders, then he would see putting the yellow pikmin in the onion as withdrawing them from the battlefield.
51:21 What the heck is going on with Olimar's eyes?!
man. pikmin 4. dang.
