Scruffy Plays Pikmin 4 - Episode 11

- Pikmin 4 is here! And I'm recording my playthrough so I can chronicle my thoughts and reactions as they happen!
This time, we're venturing into the game's 3rd area, probably my favorite one yet! And I'm pretty sure the cave I enter in the latter half of this episode features the boss everyone has been hoping for me to encounter...
Music used at the dedication at the end is an excerpt from "Lament" composed by Malcolm Williamson, performed by the Northern Sinfonia. Игры
How fitting that Scruffy's first knockout happened because...
_he panicked at the disco_ .
Dang, that's a clever joke 😆
❕
You could say he...
Got threatened with a good time
Underrated comment
I like the part where the Groovy Long Legs said "It's Groovin' time!" and Grooved all over Scruffy's Pikmin.
49 couldn't withstand the first grove then the Groovy Long Legs have proceeded to groove until there's one lone survivor.
Kudos to Scruffy for sticking with things instead of rewinding.
1:05:26 It was the bosses first step at the beginning that really caught Scruffy off guard.

Groovy put his foot down
@@Seafor-v4l
Literally 😂
i respect scruffy so much for NOT rewinding time. with 1 pikmin left, i think 99% of players would have restarted.
I reset at any death hahaha
I agree.
It's making this playthrough so much better too. I have respect for people who want to play deathless, but I find it more entertaining when there are legitimate stakes.
Well i would not rewind if i lose pikmin but im too lazy to just : go out of the cave -> get pikmin -> go back in the cave again
@@Nedrac If your logic is laziness… rewinding is WAY less work
He’s saying he would leave and go get more pikmin but he’s lazy so he just rewinds.
How lucky is it that only the bit in Arcadia wasn't recorded? Could you imagine if THIS was the episode that wasn't recorded? The first reaction to the scenery of Serene Shores, the reaction to the tide at noon, the Below-Grade Discotheque?? What a relief!
While the child of the earth is the worst enemy of everyone that tried to 100% the demo, the buried treasure of Blossoming Arcadia is a hero that saved this episode.
you just know that one poor pink pikmin probably has survivor's guilt
watching 70 of it's buddies get squashed then having to leave behind it's 9 brand new allies after they helped it avenge the army
The only one left to tell the tale, I'm sure it'll sound real crazy when talling about the glow pikmin though, that's a sight I don't think ANY pikmin get to see!
Not to mention watching his leader narrowly escape death
Pink pikmin 💀
It's moments like the fight with the Groovy Long Legs that really make me with you could name or specially mark individual pikmin to follow their journey with you. That pink pikmin really has a history to him now.
Yeah make all the kids feel real grief when their favorite pikmin dies
The Pikmin-inspired game series, Overlord, had a really cool mechanic. Defeating certain enemies, such as bosses, would cause weapons and armour to fall off. Your goblin-like minions would collect the armour and weapons and become slightly stronger as a result. So it was a fun way to distinguish between the minions that did the heavy-duty fighting and sad when they got killed. Not that I think Pikmin should have an armour and weapon mechanic, but maybe something could be used to single out "special" Pikmin.
Took me a while to realize you meant "wish" instead of "with" lol
@@KubickQ yeah exactly! gotta give the children something to cry about
@@KubickQ Classic Fire Emblem moment
All of Groovy's beats are diegetic too. If you freeze or stun him it all goes silent.
An interesting fact I heard about the Groovy Long Legs fight;
While Pikmin are dancing during the blue and yellow beats, they'll bounce under the GLL's main body, and be mostly fine. During the RED beat, they'll all hop under it's legs instead. VERY lucky red Pikmin at the start there.
I never really considered how much harder Below-Grade Discotheque would be without a fully upgraded headlamp... those Pikmin at 1:05:27 didn't even see it coming 😔
Groovy Long Legs took ONE step, and it was already over.
fun fact about the candle treasure, the flame actually has flame physics, if you toss pikmin at the wick they will catch fire
i really want to know scruffy's train of thought after witnessing groovy long legs instantly kill nearly 50 of his pikmin, then immediately start grooving
i watch these religiously every time i check and a new episode is released i kick my feet and giggle like a schoolgirl
you get it! 👍
Thanks Osaka

so real
Oh yeah, this boss is unexpectedly deadly for an Arachnorb. Kudos to you for killing it after the catastrophe in the dance floor!
Groovy Long Leg is Dangerous with a Capital "D" for Disco.
"catastrophe in the dance floor" - how about calling it a panic at the disco?
I really love how Scruffy is able to do a unique voice for every character we've encountered! The voices he does have become what I think of whenever I see the characters in other places.
Same, I'm amazed that Scruffy remembers each voice he creates even after so many characters were introduced.
that custom screen you made when you got crushed by the groovy long legs was fantastic
The melody in that screen even includes Groovy's yellow phase!
I absolutely burst out laughing omg scruffy is the best!
if you have the time Scruffy, i suggest refighting Groovy in the Piklopedia. try to stick directly underneath him and constantly throw pikmin, and latch some on during his slam attack to get a new section of music you missed here. i think you’ll like it.
The new section of music will occur when you attack the fleshy feet. Which is probably the easier way using Oatchi
@@dilophoraptordouble groovy tripping is actually based on how consistently you deal damage, not on if you attack the legs (it just deals consistent "damage")
The best strategy for tripping the Groovy is to order Oatchi to attack - he will automatically go for the feet.
Oatchi is the most consistent way to make Groovy Long Legs trip, while Pikmin are the faster option. Both are good choices in their own way.
@@the_reptilian_researcher_360for me it's easy to get him to trip during the yellow phase, just whistle as soon as he lowers his ball
The dedication to beat Groovy with only 10 pikmin, AND without the headlight... Just wow
Now I can’t wait for the other… special… cave in this area, because I know you’ll hear IT very quickly as a Pikmin veteran
hnnnghhh yesssss
Too bad the fucking entrance log spoils the surprise
@@Subreon IKR ITS KINDA RUDE!!
IM so excited to watch his reaction to that one
48:08 i don’t think i’ve ever wanted to be an explorer in the pikmin world so badly. you don’t understand how much i want to be a tiny little guy and ride this thing
The Discotheque boss is one of my favorites in this game, and really shows how important the Headlamp was for that dungeon!
(Also when I saw how many died to it, my first thought was "what is the endscreen gonna look like???")
Can we just pause and appreciate how scruffy says oatchi? That's soo sweet
that and the way he says "copy that" is just adorable for some reason lol
I think this episode contains my favourite Pikmin 4 moment so far, from anyone's playthrough.
When Scruffy went down and we got that brilliant little passage. Iconic.
Seems like a rite of passage at this point for every Pikmin 4 player to get overwhelmed by Groovy Long Legs for the first time, but Scruffy's interaction with this boss takes the cake.
This should be the new "I JUST HAD TO OPEN MY MOUTH" of pikmim community
Going into a dark cave without the headlamp, losing almost ALL your Pikmin but deciding to go on is true dedication
That Groovy Long Legs fight was so BRUTAL! Good perseverance though, I (and many others, I'm sure) probably would've loaded a checkpoint, major respect for toughing it out.
i was so excited to see him fight the silly guy, how could i possibly have predicted this 😔
I see this as an absolute win. Scruffy made the Groovy Long Legs fight more entertaining and unique to his style.
I made this mistake when I was playing, so I highly recommend you talk to rescued characters more than the two times it takes to get their quests! A lot of them have some really interesting or thoughtful dialog that builds on their relationships.
Pink Pikmin gonna have some serious survivors guilt or something like that
I'm pretty sure you can still enter caves once it reaches the "red" part of the day timer- its only when the 10 second countdown starts that you become unable to enter caves.
This is true.
"Say the line, Groovy Long Legs!"
*Kills all but 1 pikmin*
"Haha, I love the big fella!"
Fun fact for Scruffy about that first winged candypop bud. Slight spoiler about an obscure mechanic below
If there are pikmin sprouts on a ledge above you, you can rush with Oatchi into the wall to force the pikmin up out of the ground.
“This cave is super dark, you should use your headlamp!”
Scruffy: “No thanks, I’m good.”
I get that he likes the ambiance of the dark caves, but it makes it kinda hard for the viewers to see :(
It also made it hard to see Groovy's legs, which lead to the tragedy
Didn’t scruffy buy the headset? Why didn’t he use it?

That boss comeback was INSANE, had me head bumping on the edge of my seat the entire time
Oh my god, I won’t spoil it for those like myself who read the comments, but the extra effort you put into one of the caves was really quite cool
AND THE VOICE FOR BERNARD TOO I LOVE THIS
@@feel65i just heard his voice and wow, his voice for bernard is PERFECT
Scruffy had balls to continue with the massive L he took during the fight
Gosh didn't realize how much more intimidating the Groovy Long Legs is without the headlamp.
It’s fun to hear all of the tiny instrumental additions the enemies provide, especially since I couldn’t ever notice the subtle changes on my tv
I kinda wish you got to hear this but, during the big disco fight, if you attack its legs while in the yellow phrase, it'll rear back and do a big stomp to try and catch you, stunning itself and playing the "opportunity to attack" theme from pikmin 3(I think it's the pikmin 3 one)
Fun fact, the Survey Drone can be used as a remote weapon if you unpause time while still using it and being in Co-op mode thanks to the Pebble Pitcher.
That party bug goes hard. Pikmin genocide has never sounded so good, tragically.

Well at the very least you'll remember your first encounter with the Groovy Long Legs. Glad you enjoyed it.
I was so excited to see you fight the Groovy Long Legs and boy did the fight not disappoint, it’s one of my favorite boss fights in this game
That "Can't-dle" joke is so dumb i love it
There's a lot more to Groovy Long Legs than the utter clobbering it administered! It's hard, but it's possible to actually out-dance this creature (if "creature" describes the Arachnorbs at all...) and cause it to trip. I'd highly suggest getting some payback in the Piklopedia - the way it shifts the music in response to your advantages over it are amazing.
And kudos to that one little angel of a Flying Pikmin. That little one deserves a ribbon or something...
... I almost am sort of looking forward to future mishaps. That little punctual "bong!" upon being flattened was hilarious, along with that little speech. And your willingness to accept your mistakes and press on is really commendable, too.
What an episode. Begging on my hands and knees for a full version of that wistful Groovy Long Legs theme you made for the edit. It sounds sooo good!
I’m so glad this video came out today, I have an audition in 3 and a half hours and this is a great way to destress before I get a last bit of practice and warm up in

@@somerandomguy-3102 I know! 😆
I'm still excited to see Scruffy's reaction to every inch of this game, but seeing a well-known Pikmin music enthusiast getting to experience a Pikmin boss fight centered around music really was a highlight of this playthrough.
Man I was expecting a fight, not a slaughter! That first stomp was really unlucky lmao.
In case someone want to see groovy fella's cave: 33:33
Thank you. I can tell this will be the highlight of this video and Scruffy's playthrough as a whole.
this area is BEAUTIFUL!! I love the attention that Scruffy brings to each tiny detail!
Been waiting for this. Honestly I was expecting the boss to look cooler in the dark but it didn't look as cool without the headlamp. Still very enjoyable music.
Edit: The third phase does look cooler in the dark!
The main reason you lost so many pikmin is because you removed your headlamp. You couldn't see the feet until it stepped on you. Was it cool, yes, but probably not worth 99% of your active pikmin.
I’ve been so excited to see your thoughts on this boss
rip the 49 pikmin that instantly died the second groovy took it's first step
"I'm not about to let you get another bonus find."
*Only takes the less valuable of the two bonus finds Olimar has, despite the more valuable one being rignt next to it.*
I don’t think he noticed the peckish aristocrab was a bonus find
@@jv______
I mean…
• It's shown with *×3* in the middle of the screen
• Has the bonus find indicator above it
But I suppose its possible he wasn't paying any attention to those things. It happens to us sometimes, but only when we're starting to get tired and should really turn the game off to sleep.
I just don't think he realized what the crown meant, and wasn't looking at the line between the screens. He had a lot to pay attention to. That being said, I also thought it was silly and was looking for a comment such as this.
I couldn't wait to see Scruffy's encounter with Groovy Long Legs, and seeing it in the thumbnail was even more exciting. Below-Grade Discotheque is probably my favorite Cave, between Groovy being an awesome boss design, the Sandy Keep being a cool location, and with it being the only source of Winged Pikmin for most of the game.
I could never have guessed how that encounter would go, though. 49 Pikmin in one stomp, and nearly all the rest in another? The only time I lost even close to that many Pikmin was fighting Emperess Bulblax (and one other spoiler enemy that wasn't the Final Boss). I didn't loose a single Pikmin to Groovy, though my strategy was to play it safe, disbanding non Reds and using the Spicy Spray while staying on Oatchi. Oh, and I had the headlamp on so I could see the legs to dodge them.
A moment of silence to all the Pikmin lost in this episode. We salute all 78 of you! o7
I really love how you decided not to rewind and regain all your pikmin.
It made for a really interesting and entertaining situation.
Serene shores is my favorite area in the game, it’s simply beautiful and it has great caves.

@@somerandomguy-3102Dude. Same.
@@somerandomguy-3102yeah, too bad it's kinda spoilt by the log
Scruffy definitely needed a smooth win on the night mission after how terrible the boss went.
Fun fact about that candle: if a pikmin somehow touches the flame, it WILL catch them on fire.
1:09:10 I really love the inclusion of the Hanna Barbera-esque metallic bonk when the Groovy Long Legs stepped on you. Really adds that cartoonish clarity that you talked about in the Pikmin 3 SFX trivia video.
Groovy is absolutely my fave new boss in the game, if not my fave in the series (though it's a tough match, I got a lot of nostalgia for enemies like the Water Wraith and Quaggled Mireclops...guess I really like bosses that crush your squad). Taking the idea of the Raging Long Legs' speed ups and giving it a musical twist is GENIUS, especially for a game that already has such unique and in-depth sound design. Also, I love the subtly comedic touches, like the Pikmin being too lost in dance to listen to the player and the air horn death scream, I haven't laughed this hard at a boss since the final phase of the Water Wraith.
......hehehe
@@CybeastID Yonny moment
It’s a shame you had such bad luck at the beginning of the GLL fight, because you didn’t get to experience the really fun theme for when it trips
Wooooow, that is one super unique boss! Games like No Straight Roads and Hi-Fi Rush have arisen a fascination with boss fights that tie into their music, and seeing that in action here is both awesome and terrifying. And considering the prop it's using, it's a pretty clever way to bring back an old boss while remixing it (heh) into something new.
GROOVY IS IN THE THUMBNAIL ITS TIME
Honestly Serene Shores is my favorite of the areas in Pikmin 4. The environment is so pleasant and calm to be in, it’s got some of my favorite enemies like the new Crusted Rumpup, Groovy Longlegs, *he who must not be named*, and the whole idea of the water level changing at noon adds so much and is a wonderful idea I hope they do more of in future games or possible dlc. Also can't forget that this is where we unlock Wing Pikmin in 4 who are my absolute favorite Pikmin type both asthetically and functionality.
The perfect Bernard voice! Exactly as I imagined him sounding! :D
Really good episode! And talk about snatching victory from the jaws (or terrible stomping legs) of defeat…
A soundscape note I noticed, the sounds seem to only come out during the mid-day, which I thought was a nice touch. Also, I think it’d be neat to at least see the information on any new bosses or mid-bosses you meet for the first time during an episode (though I get that you don’t want to spend a bunch of time on the Piklopedia every single episode). Either way, looking forward to the rest of this playthrough!
something similar happened to me in the kingdom of beasts... i lost almost everything because i was mindlessly rushinf the bosses
that shook me so hard that i was just traumatized for the rest of my playthrough. i used everything i could to not let massive pikmin deaths like this
Scruffy btw, in the treasure catalog, some treasures have special interactive features, like the game boy so when you find something interesting give it a look to see if there are any special quarks with it in the catalog.
Even I felt bad watching all those pikmin get stomped on. Amazing content as always mate! Oh, and I know a few comments will and probably have already mentioned this, but there is a special little musical section about the Groovy Long Legs fight that you weren’t able to experience due to having all those pikmin get squashed. I don’t know exactly how to do it, and I don’t want to spoil it, but try refighting it in the piklopedia with a lot of pikmin.
SO much respect for refusing to rewind even in the face of a huge party loss. pulling out the glow pikmin and charging forward with just 10 on such a difficult boss is commendable- i reset on this thing more than once
The groovy long legs is definitely my favorite boss, the music is awsome and the stomping of the feet acting as the bass for the music is awsome. (Im not actually sure of the bass thing is accurate but its a nice thought)
That oachi meme is so great. Watch those dandori points now!
I can’t stress enough how much your voice over the text enhance this play through
I was so excited to see Scruffy reach Groovy Long Legs! I knew he would love the mechanics since it's all music based. I think it's really admirable how Scruffy can turn frustration or irritation with a situation into something more like calm intrigue. All those pikmin lost! and Scruffy still manages to be calm and collected in the situation.
the enthusiastic performances you do to take this game and your losses with it seriously make this the best pikmin playthrough ever imo
20:03 he switches indecisively almost to the beat of the music here. very unintentional but funny
I love more than anything that Pikmin includes bosses like Groovy Long Legs. The ability Pikmin games have to create memorable experiences in the player, be they good or bad, is remarkable.
This has been my favorite episode so far. I have been waiting for so long for you to make it to this boss because of the whole concept of a boss based on EDM. With you being an channel based on analyzing music and this being a franchise you love, will you make a videos on the entire soundtrack of the game or go more specific topics like how you did like with now or never and focus on a specific song. And on a final note, Rest in Peace to all the Pikmin who were lost to this groovy menace
Cool to see that Scruffy doesn’t like to reset even after a mass pikmin death. Us non-resetting Pikmin players are few in numbers.
THE SLOW EMOTIONAL GROOVY LONG LEGS THEME AND THE POEM WAS SO COOL
Another hour long video.
This is awesome, and im also glad you're having fun scruffy :)
Man, it must've been painful losing all of those Pikmin. I respect you for not rewinding time. I know for a fact I would've. And I can't for you to keep going.
But yes, the boss's music is amazing ^^
Very impressive to not reset after the Groovy Long Legs fight!
Honestly my favorite boss fight so far with the unexpected yet funny theming and great song
Serene Shores is my favorite area in the game, no questions. It has the best caves, the best ambiance, I love the tide mechanic, and blue pikmin (my favorite type) are absolutely necessary.
I hope you had a good time with it, too.
I love how . much life and kind of drama scruffy brings into this episode
i see groovy in the thumbnail and i KNOW this episode's gonna be good
I have a theory! (Spoilers for end of episode, but I know nothing more than what scruffy has played.)
It’s the oxygen! They say throughout the series that oxygen is poisonous, I bet it’s what makes things into leaflings! Olimar says in the log that his life support is failing, and he’s doing a final push. What if the push failed? His life support gave out, and he breathed oxygen which turned him into a leafling! It would also explain oatchi’s tail. Oatchi is breathing oxygen the whole game! Perhaps what olimar does to the castaways when he gives them to the onion is remove their helmets and put them on pure oxygen.
That’s just a guess I came up with for the moment though, no clue how accurate it is.
Scruffy, i respect your decision to keep the atmosphere of the game by not using the headlamp, but as a viewer I’d absolutely love it if you would use it lol
1 wing Wendy, the pikmin, the myth, the legend
Scruffy keeps forgetting to use spicy spray during boss fights!
He will realize that being on Oatchi is safer and more tactical during boss fights eventually... hopefully...
It's been almost a year and I just wanted to say how cool it is that we went from slow, meandering spider bosses that were mostly just an extra overworld thing in Pikmin 3 to Groovy over here who has speed increases, actively tracks your location and can decide which leg to lift, when and where to slam it down way more accurately, it has a freaking stomp attack. Groovy doesn't feel awkwardly big or spindly or weak, he's a Threat with a capital T. And he does it all to the beat of his own drum...or rave track. Inspiring really, we could all learn to be a little more like Groovy in our daily lives.
its a tiny detail but the olfactory sculpture in the discotheque; i saw a video of someone throwing a yellow pikmin ontop of it and the flame set the pikmin on fire
man i love the groovy longlegs so much; i think it is one of the best enemies in the entire franchise
i was waiting to see your reaction to it because it is "the music boss' and just has such an insane presentation. i wasnt expecting it to take out like two thirds of your pikmin on its first step; but i it is extremely menacing when its dark and harder to see; especially id imagine if youve never fought them before. i had absolutely no idea you could play as only oatchi; i know oatchi can be downed but i figured if your captain is downed the day would end; oatchi or not
id love to see your refight the groovy longlegs in the discotheque; i think its a really fun fight and the music is great and i just really want to hear you talk about the music even more... hopefully if there are ever pikmin 4 music and sound effect videos the groovy longlegs will get a segment. one thing i like to do in the piklopedia sometimes is using a bunch of rocks and just letting them party with the groovy longlegs cause they cant be crushed
rest in peace to those 74 pikmin who lost their lives in the discotheque... its probably one of my favourite caves though still
