Collected a bunch of seeds to start. My tree is in a bad place and lost most of it's lower branches. One of my neighbors has a beautiful big tree that had probably 3 bushels of fruit on it this year. Tree has been orange with so much fruit on it.
Did you allow the direct sowed seeds to be exposed to rain/snow or were they kept outside in winter temps but shielded from elements? Any other special tips… Like we’re they kept in a fairly sunny south facing spot or opposite?
I allowed them to be exposed to everything, since the seeds haven’t sprouted yet in the wintertime there’s nothing to worry about in terms of dieback. And in regards to keeping them in any certain area, anywhere works as long as they’re outside and experience winter.
There’s no way to tell the seeds apart, there’s no way to tell them until they flower which could be 8+ years depending on how they grow. You can graft female scions onto them if you are planning an orchard, but you will need males for pollination anyways so I would just plant twice as many trees as you need
It depends if you have deer/human pressure or not. If they’re smaller than 4 feet tall they will need some kind of protection from mowers, deer, or people walking. If you are mass planting them it makes more sense to just put them in the ground and hope for the best when they’re small but if you’re only growing a few I would wait until they’re a good size
Hello. A friend is sending me about 2 dozen seeds off of his tree,,, so I need some need-to-know seed starting info. Where are you located? How cold does it get? Are you leaving the planter of seeds outdoors, in all of the elements? IF NOT,,,, how often do you water the seeds & how many months does it take to stratify them,,, & what kind of temps does it take to start the seeds growing? Like direct sun,,, 70-80*? Well,,,, that's a lot of questions, but I hope you can help me out. I wouldn't want these seeds to rot, or not germinate. THANKS.
I am located in SouthEast Ohio, we do get a good amount of snow and cold winters here so they will need to be either left outside (if you have winters) or put in the fridge for 3 months or so. For all my seedlings I start them in part shade to not shock them totally. I never have to water the seedlings as we get a good amount of rain here.
“Squirrels are assholes”
Understatement of the year 😂
