I got 33 american persimmon seeds from West Farm Nursery in New Jersey. I cold stratified for 110 days in temperatures between 33 and 36 degrees while in damp potting soil. I then moved them to 84 to 86 degrees. 8 days later 31 of the 33 had roots, and several were a few inches long.
21 days later, at about 70 degrees under a grow light, 28 are above the surface. One had trouble breaking its seed case, but I think I helped it without damaging the plant.
My fridge temperature is 7c. Is it cold enough for stratification? How about the freezer? Is it okay to put dry seeds in the freezer for stratification?
@@alicew7045 Definitely not the freezer. In the past, I got poor germination when my pawpaw seeds were in the 8 to 9 degree C range, so I now keep it below 40 F. That the best answer that I can give.
I tried to save some seeds from an american persimmon that was cut down last fall, and I’ve been keeping them wrapped in a wet paper towel in a jar in the fridge over the winter. I was looking for more info on planting them now that it’s warming up and this video is great! Thanks so much!
I did the same method and forgot the seeds were in the fridge. When the fridge died, I found the seeds, they have began to put out roots, I took them out and wet the paper towel and laid them on the counter. Within about two weeks they had roots two inched long. Then potted them up and most of them grew. Some had broken roots where they grew into the paper towel. They did not make it.
My grandma's yard is full of different types of fruit trees that were given to her as wedding presents. I loved eating the persimmons in the cold months when I was a kid. She died many years ago, and her property will eventually be left to another granddaughter who won't cherish any of it. I want to save some of the beloved tree's seeds to have her persimmon tree in my own yard. There was only ever the one tree, but it always had tons of fruit. Thank you for the video!
If you can get some scion wood (this years new growth) from your grandmother’s persimmons tree, you could graft the scion wood onto a persimmon tree that you buy from a nursery. The fruit that comes from the graft should taste just like the fruit on your grandmother’s tree.
Great video, thank you so much for all of this info!!!! Got a batch of persimmons from the farmers market and they have seeds, so I’m going to try water soaking them! 😊
I have about 20 wild american persimmon seedlings averaging 3 inches tall which came up in my yard this year. I put them in pots with potting soil. It is June and very hot right now. Should I keep the pots inside or outside? If outside, how much shade and sun per day? Thx
You should keep them in a shaded area for now. My seedlings were in full shade or partial shade and continued to grow. You could put them underneath a tree that gets periodic shade throughout the day. Unfortunately, the 2023 Texas summer killed the seedlings in the full shade! It was ridiculously hot!
When they're young, they should be in partial sun. Usually, they'll growing underneath their 'parent' plant. As they grow taller and hardier, they'll adjust to more or full sun. But as seedlings, they should be in partial sun.
As a retired nurseryman with over 24 years of experience, I get so angry when I see these videos encouraging their viewers to plant fruit trees from seed. The seeds from a fruit are a hybrid. Hybridizers plant tens of thousands of seeds each year to hope one day that a new commerical variety will result Spend the money and go to a reputable nursery and purchase a grafted variety that is suitable to your location. It will produce fruit sooner and you will be able to harvest something that you can enjoy for years.

Thank you so much! It took about two years in the making!

Where can I buy a saplings ?
Where did you buy the persimmons? I bought several times, all without seeds.
Let me know the store name. I love to grow fruit trees from seeds.
What's the best climactic conditions for plantation?

🤝🤝 I’m in Texas too. My roses are horrible.
Should the pot be placed in full or partial sun?
When they're young, they should be in partial sun. Usually, they'll growing underneath their 'parent' plant. As they grow taller and hardier, they'll adjust to more or full sun.
But as seedlings, they should be in partial sun.
Little history: persimmons originated from Persia and went to China through silk road. All different names on them were put later on.

Everything I read says a true Fuyu persimmon doesn’t grow from seeds.
I got 2 Fuyu fruits with seeds, which I planted and they are growing.
